OBITUARY
Inventor and creator throughout his lifetime
Lawrence Harvey Empey (Larry)
was born at home in Swalwell, Alta. to
John and Mae Empey on July 28, 1942
and passed away on March 25, 2021 at
the Three Hills Health Centre after a
full and interesting life.
With his inquisitive mind,
he invented many fascinating
things and was interested in
all things mechanical. He was
also an artist at heart, creating
beautiful works of
stained glass.
Larry attended school in
Swalwell and Acme followed
by SAIT where he began his
career as a heavy-duty
mechanic.
Empey
He then went to work with
Finning on the west coast followed by
years in the high arctic. Many of us
were fortunate to hear his fascinating
stories from this time.
He then returned to the Swalwell
area to farm while also working at
Agri Centre.
A handsome red-headed bachelor,
Larry didn’t stay a bachelor for long
marrying Myrna Gore Price and
becoming a beloved part of
her family.
He had a natural ability
with the grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Sitting
on his knee listening to his
booming voice was always a
safe place to be for the little
ones.
Larry was a prankster
who loved a good practical
joke and many of us were
the recipients of his fun.
His Christmas light display
delighted friends in the winter as did
campfires in the perfectly manicured
yard during summer.
Larry and Myrna enjoyed attending
curling championships in various
places, but a highlight trip was a riverboat
cruise they took on the MacKenzie
River to Inuvik, seeing many places he
had been years before.
Larry leaves behind his three stepsons,
Kevin (Linda) Price, Mitch (Beth)
Price, Scott Price (Shay MacNeil), eight
grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
He also leaves behind sisters
Lorraine Chapman and Shelley
Wilkinson, brother Ralph (Jean)
Empey, brothers-in-law Larry Pondick
and Blaine (Sharon) Gore as well as a
large extended family.
He was predeceased by his wife
Myrna, parents John and Mae Empey,
parents-in-law Wes and Marjorie
Gore, sister Marjorie Pondick and
brothers-in-law Charles Chapman,
Larry Wilkinson and Ronald Gore.
Enjoyed many hobbies and sports
Oct. 10, 1941 – March 24, 2021
Barb Cheney passed away peacefully
on March 24, 2021 at the Long-Term
Care facility in Hanna at the age of 79.
Barb was born on Oct. 10, 1941 to
George and Daisy Hansen,
one of seven children on the
family farm at Square Deal,
Alta.
She was a devoted wife to
Ralph and mother of five
children.
She enjoyed her hobbies of
sewing, quilting, baking and
her flowers.
In her earlier years she
enjoyed softball and was a
strong supporter of her boy’s
pursuits in hockey.
Cheney
Barb really enjoyed curling, golfing,
fishing and waterskiing as well as
being an avid sports fan.
Barb and her husband Ralph travelled
to various destinations after
retiring.
She loved her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, leaving us beautiful
memories.
Barb was deeply loved by her family
and all that knew her.
Barb is survived by her children
Anne (Terry) Dell, Gordon
(Donna) Cheney, Brad (Sheri)
Cheney, Troy Cheney, and
Leasa (Brad) Zukewich.
She is also survived by her
grandchildren Melissa (Jarret)
Sperling, Heather (Scott)
Jeschke, Mike (Nikki) Dell,
Shannon (Josh) Hoetmer, Russ
(Shayla) Cheney, Ashley
Cheney, Terri (Tyler) Cheney,
Jamie (Grady) Cheney,
Katelyn Zukewich, Madison
Zukewich and six great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are sister’s Elsie
Munro and Virginia Collins, sister-inlaw’s
Linda Hansen and Ev Cheney, as
well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first
husband Emil Radke and later her
second husband of 49 years, Ralph
Kind and generous soul

(1956 - 2021)
It is with great sadness the family of
Wendy Dafoe announce her passing at
the Coronation Hospital on
Feb. 14, 2021 with her
family at her side.
Wendy is survived by her
loving husband, Jim, their
three children, Tyler Dafoe
(Ciara), Kelli-Ann King
(Rus), and Crystal Dafoe
(Shawn), 10 grandchildren;
and two
great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by
her mother, Evelyn
Campbell, three brothers,
Dafoe
Collin, Ian and Neil Campbell, several
uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews
and many friends.
She was pre-deceased by one
brother, Murray Campbell, her father,
Bill Campbell, her father and motherin-law,
Fred and Ann Dafoe, Veteran,
Alta. and two brothers-in-law, Carson
and Dennis Dafoe.
Wendy deeply loved her family and
many many friends. She was loved and
admired in return.
Wendy was a kind and generous soul
and always willing to lend a helping
hand to anyone. The community of
Coronation and surrounding area considered
Wendy a valued member of the
community.
The Town of Coronation is having a
bronze plaque made in her honour for
her dedication to installing the fountain
at the campground and
beautifying the campground
with her many many floral displays
and more.
Wendy and Jim owned and
operated the Dafood Catering
Services for several years.
Everyone loved the wonderful
meals Wendy prepared for
many weddings, and other
large events.
They also served food from
the booth in the Coronation
arena during hockey games,
and sometimes for curling bonspiels.
Wendy loved to cook, especially
for her family.
There are so many lives she
touched in a positive way
So many memories that bring
a smile
And show the wonderful
person she was.
So many stories about how
she made a difference
Or made someone’s day.
So many hearts that are
feeling sadness.
Because she was here,
because she was loved.
Wendy will be greatly missed
by all who knew her.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private
ceremony was held for family on
Thurs. April 1, 2021.
Interment will occur at the Hanna
Cemetery at a later date.
