Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church
5 Paleologos Street, Peabody, MA 01960-4496 . Tel: (978) 531-0777 . Fax: (978) 538-9522
The parish family
of St. Vasilios cordially
invites you to participate
in the greatest celebration
of all….Pascha (Easter).
Everyone is invited!
Those who struggled
through Great and Holy
Lent to gain spiritual food
and maturity and those
who only came to church
one or twice this year.
We must remember
the words of St. John Chrysostom who called upon all
of us as a loving and caring church to welcome Christ
home. Yes, even to those who come only once a year
are welcome.
We will be good hosts, not only because we
are the St. Vasilios family, but because we are the
Church of the Living God. We will proclaim…Christ
is Risen!
Christ is Risen! What does that mean to us as
people of this world? It means that salvation is given
to all of us through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross and
His Glorious Resurrection. Personally, Christ is Risen
means that we no longer have to fear death. It means
we no longer have to live in darkness. We have
shared in Christ’s death and resurrection through our
Baptism. Our responsibility is to live out the commitment
that was professed for us by our Godparents and
parents.
There is no greater joy than to feel the presence
of Jesus Christ and to be filled with the Holy
Spirit.
April 2021
Fasting and Great Lent
Let us all, then, enter into the joy of our Lord.
You first and last receive alike your reward; you rich
and poor, rejoice together. You sober and you slothful,
celebrate the day. You that have kept the fast, and
you that have not, rejoice today; for the Table is richly
laden. Feast royally on it. The calf is a fatted one.
Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all of you, of the
cup of faith. Enjoy, all of you, the richness of His
goodness. Let no one grieve their poverty; for the universal
Kingdom has been revealed (from the Pascal
Sermon of St. John Chrysostom).
Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!
Towards Authentic Christian Life
The authentic Christian experience consists of preparing ourselves for communion
and community. As the Church, the Εκκλησία, the Assembly of
God’s chosen people, we exist in tension between being and becoming. We
are called to find the right balance between being and becoming. We are
called to find the right balance between “being” Orthodox Christians and becoming
more fully, truly and perfectly Orthodox Christians.
The process of genuine transformation is both external and internal, without
true transfiguration of the soul nothing externally altered will be long lasting.
To make long lasting progress in the Christian life we must put in effort. We
must strive in order to make progress, and when progress is made we find
ourselves in a new place, with a renewed depth and clarity, we must then
work to stabilize this progress. Doing so truly makes this who we are, and applying it to every aspect
and moment of our life as best we can to solidify and securely stand our ground, prior to making
efforts to take another step.
This is the balance of being and becoming climbing to the next level by first seeing that we have a
good foundation to push off from, and a solid place to land, and stabilize ourselves in the firm hands
of Christ. The constant process of renewal and deepening of our spiritual, physical, emotional, relational
well-being. In perfecting ourselves, we make ourselves more acceptable for God and His people.
Maintaining and strengthening our relationship with God, and if it is at the moment non-existent
then establishing one with Him begins with humility in prayer and in reading of scripture, regular
liturgical participation and confession.
These are the gifts, the tools and the means that have been provided to us for the healing of our souls
and bodies, for the renewal of humanity and creation itself, one person, one step, and one moment at
a time. With the start of Lent we have a fresh opportunity to begin this process of transformation
anew. With the duration and close of Lent we have the opportunity to stabilize our progress and together
celebrate Christ’s victory over death, and humanities freedom from his clutches.
Parish Council News
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
John Maihos, President
We are getting back to normal. Thank God!
So many of us have experienced hardship due to COVID-19. Some have lost their jobs,
others have experienced cutbacks, and sadly, lives have been lost. No one signed up for
this, but we faced it and we will persevere.
There have been many times through this year that I have wondered how people keep
their spirits up, how they manage their family life, and how they keep their faith. Everyone
handles stress and challenges differently, and it’s possible that we weren’t optimistic at some points.
It’s possible that we weren’t the best mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter, during this pandemic.
It’s also possible that some lost faith. This wouldn’t be the first time in the history of civilization that we
have been stressed and tested like this, and it wouldn’t be the first time we questioned things that are core to
our existence.
As we reflect on Pascha, there are many stories of great sacrifice and great loss. People suffered through
condemnation, persecution, and even death. The resurrection changed the world.
We can find comfort in knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel in every problem we face when
we accept Christ into our life. When we realize that the supports around us – including our own self – will
be there for us, we will never lose faith.
The St. Vasilios community is also here for every parishioner, and we are thankful that every parishioner is
here for the St. Vasilios community. It’s our spiritual family.
In our last bulletin, I talked about people coming together at all levels of the parish to help us with our latest
challenge – the universal access to our parish campus. This is more than an “elevator project.” For many it
will be a defining moment allowing them to rejoin the events of our church. It will allow people to connect
during a coffee hour regardless of their physical ability. (Yes, coffee hours will resume someday!) For many
members, this will be a lifelong dream come true.
Universal access will take more than money. It will take planning and perseverance. It will also take a dedicated
team of volunteers who support this vision. I am proud to say we have just that team put together, and
we are always recruiting for that next great quarterback, receiver or linebacker. (I threw that analogy in for
the #1 Patriot’s fan in the parish!)
As we tackle universal access, we must not forget the day-to-day operations of the church. We will still have
wages to pay, utilities, and of course the program of our parish. Maintaining a stewardship pledge and payment
will be critical. Finding the “extra” dollar or two will be the only way we can get the project done
without sacrificing our core programs. Basically, I am asking that you give up something in your life to help
fund this project, and to help us complete this project over the next few years. We can do this!
Before people throw stones, please remember that we are all heading in the same direction. As we age, we
will undoubtedly need the features of universal access. (If anyone has found the Fountain of Youth, please
text me anytime day or night!)
Let’s keep our spirits up. Let’s keep our family together, and let’s keep our faith. We will succeed through
our own exertions and with Christ as our leader.
Καλό Πάσχα.

Stewardship update
As of March 14, 2021, we have 417 stewards for a total of $264,595 pledged. The total number of pledged
stewards in 2020 was 736. Our budget this year is $400,000. We mailed out first reminder letters in early
March and I’m very grateful we have had an immediate and positive response from many people. If you have
not acted, please do so as soon as possible as every steward is critical to our well-being. In the last two years
our membership has declined so it is important to arrest this downward trend.
ST. VASILIOS GREEK SCHOOL ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ
March is always a very busy month for the Greek School. Since we were unable to hold our Annual Independence
Day Program, we created a video to celebrate the Bicentennial Anniversary of Greek Independence that
showcased all of our students. Our introductory class learned the Greek National Anthem, students in grades
Prek-2nd learned poems and the 3rd through 6th grade classes spent a great amount of time learning about the
Heroes that fought for Greek Independence. The video is posted on the Greek School and Church facebook
page as well as on the Church website.
Our Annual Flag Raising Ceremony was held on March 18th at the City Hall in Peabody.
Church School News
The Covid landscape is improving and we are prayerful that Church School will begin in September, but the
lessons of this most holy time of year, for us as Orthodox Christians, still needs to be taught. The Archdiocese
website has lessons on Great Lent, Holy Week and Pascha. Please go to www.goarch.org and click on Directories
and then on Departments & Ministries, where you will find weekly lessons posted for children of all
ages and for adults, too. Let us also teach our children by example; make a commitment to fasting, and family
prayer, serving those less fortunate and to church services, whether in person or on-line.
The Church School staff wishes all a Blessed Journey to Pascha!
Calling All High School Seniors!
A reminder, Sunday School graduation will be held on Sunday, May
Getting back to our normal routines after this pandemic can feel overwhelming and scary. Creating a SMART
goal will help you get organized and ready to start to slowly get reacclimated with enjoying activities both old
and new.
SMART is an acronym for Specific: Measurable: Attainable; Realistic; and Time-based. Pick an activity you
would like to accomplish and set you SMART goal using the following example:
“I want to start walking and build up to five miles per day by the end of this month.”
It is Specific because there is a set number of miles in the goal.
It is Measurable because miles walked can be tracked and recorded.
It is Attainable because there is a build up to the final number of miles.
It is Realistic if there are no known barriers preventing one from walking each day.
It is Time-based because it includes “by the end of this month.”
HEALTHBEAT
Should I Get The Covid 19 Vaccine Even If I’ve Already
Had COVID-19 Mayo Clinic
The protection a person gets from having an infection (natural immunity) varies depending on
the disease and from person to person. It’s true that having COVID-19 offers some immunity from
reinfection with the virus. But because the Covid-19 virus is still new and not fully understood. It’s
not clear how long that protection lasts. Current evidence suggests that reinfection with the virus is
uncommon in the first 90 days after the first infection. Because reinfection is possible and Covid-19
can cause severe medical complications and even death. It’s recommended that people who have already
had COVID-19 should get vaccinated. According to the CDC the vaccination should be offered
to you regardless of whether you already had an infection.. However, if you are currently infected
with the virus you should wait to get vaccinated until after your illness has resolved and have met the
criteria to discontinue isolation. It would be reasonable to wait until the end of the 90 day period after
the onset of the virus, the minimum current time frame of expected natural immunity to be vaccinated.
With vaccine distribution, first priority is given to health care workers and adult residents of long
term care facilities, followed by people 75 and older and essential workers. It has been prioritized for
adults ages 65 to 74 as well as adults under 65 who are high risk for complications of COVID-19 due
to underlying health conditions. If you are unsure about your eligibility or have questions about vaccination
call your local or state Covid hotline or talk to your health care provider.

Dear Reverend Fathers, Sisters and Friends,
Philoptochos Athena
Hoping all is well with you and your families. Philoptochos has been busy these last couple of months. Here is
our current and future news.
At the February 17 th Philoptochos meeting, Giana Langis of Citizens Inn/Haven from Hunger, gave a very informative
presentation about the organization and the increased needs in our community. At the end of the
meeting we presented Giana and Citizens Inn/Haven from Hunger a check for $1000, a result of the generous
Metropolis grant funds we received. The March 17 th Philoptochos meeting featured a presentation by nutritionist
Ismini Soteropoulos on healthy eating tips. Ismini gave a food demonstration preparing a morning smoothie
and also provided a flyer with healthy eating tips and recipes. Andrea O’Donnell, a licensed mental health
counselor (LMHC), shared some wonderful tips on setting healthy goals as we prepare to re-enter a nearing
post pandemic world. The attendees got a lot out of both presentations and lots of questions were asked and
answered.
Advertising and registration for our Virtual Wine Tasting has begun. This event will be held on Saturday,
April 17, 2021 at 7 p.m. We invite the entire St. Vasilios community, family and friends near and far (we have
guests coming from as far as Chicago and possibly California) to join us in a tasting of Moschofilero, a white
wine from Mantinia, a rosè from Attiki, and Liatiko, a red wine from Crete. The sommelier, Foti Stamos of
The Cork Stop in North Andover, will guide us on an exploration of three regions of Greece which produce
three different types of wines with a great story behind each. The special guest will be Johnny Livanos, of Diamond
Wine Importers, representing the wineries. Until we can get together in person, let's all raise a glass
together virtually! The flyer is included in this bulletin. Please be sure to register by April 10 th . For further details,
with joyful, loving and pure hearts. We are still welcoming new members during the Pandemic
As Father Chris says: “Many Hands Make Light Work”. With your help, we can and will accomplish so much
together soon. We are a great team! And before we know it, we will be able to work together in person!
Stay well and take care. Wishing you a beautiful and spiritual Lenten Season!
St. Vasilios Endowment Fund
Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap
a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially
to those who belong to the family of believers. Gal. 6:9-10
Dear Parishioner,
In 2021, according to the Investment Policy governing the Saint Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church
Endowment Fund, the Investment Committee has determined that a grant opportunity in the
amount of $141,106.89 is available for disbursement to organizations and/or individuals of the Saint
Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church Community.
You therefore can see with an excellent financial market and good stewardship by our Investment Committee
how important it is that parishioners consider directing their future gifts and bequests to the St. Vasilios
Endowment Fund, and thus your gift will remain inviolate and assist our Church in perpetuity.
Rest assured that professionals manage the Fund and our very qualified Investment Committee distributes
proceeds. This allows for your donation to have an impact on our Church forever rather than if it were
spent all at once.
Please consider thoughtfully about remembering your St. Vasilios Church with a gift that will support our
Church perpetually for generations to come. Parishioners should consider memorial gifts to the Endowment
Fund upon the passing of a loved one or a gift to honor a family member in life.
Yours in Christ,
+Rev. Christopher P. Foustoukos, Presiding Priest
Mr. Charles T. Partaledis, Parish Council Treasurer (Chairman of Endowment Fund Investment Committee)
{The St. Vasilios Endowment Fund is a recognized part of St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, established
under the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Your
donation is deductible to the full extent allowed by law.
