WELCOME...
It’s been months since the
#EndSARS protest that erupted across
the nation, but those who were
adversely affected by the violence that
followed, are still counting their losses.
Actress cum entrepreneur and
CEO of Killer Curves, Uche Elendu is
one Nigerian whose business was
heavily vandalized and looted.
Starting over in this COVID period is
a mountain that she is gradually
summounting. She tells her story to
Josephine Agbonkhese. pg 4-5.
Violence of any kind is not one that
should be encouraged. As we mark
Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this April, we are reminded of
another kind of violence.
Intentionally sexually touching another person without her
consent, or physically forcing a person to engage in a sexual act
against her will, all constitute acts of assault and forms of sexual
violence.
A survey reveals that 8 out of 10 sexual assaults are
committed by someone known to the victim. Sadly, most times,
society is quick to lay the blame at the feet of the survivor. Such
blame game stem from cultural norms and practices often
experienced in patriarchal societies like ours.
Stereotypes that suggest that the way a woman dressed was
responsible for why she was assaulted should be deconstructed.
The repulsive culture of silence must be broken and
harrasment must never be normalized. It will always remain and
be seen as part of gender violence.
Government must create the enabling environment, to ensure
that international instruments that protect the girl child against
gender based violence are domesticated and people are
sensitized enough to know that these laws exist.
Nineteen states have shown political will by leading in this
direction. Ekiti State must be commended for exemplary
enabling environment created to support and protect survivors.
They shouldn’t be allowed to bow their
heads in shame. Rather, efforts should
J . E
be geared towards fishing out
perpetrators and shaming them.
INTERVIEW
Uche Elendu:
Starting Afresh
Words By - Josephine Agbonkhese
Actress, scriptwriter, model, producer and CEO of foremost beauty store, Killer Curves, Uche
Elendu is one of Nollywood’s shining stars that require almost no introduction.
The graduate of International Relations has, since the early 2000s when she officially
joined the Nigerian movie industry, had her name cast in stone as one of the most skillful and versatile
acts in the industry.
In this interview, the award-winning actress and mother of two, whose business was one of those
heavily looted during last year’s #EndSARS saga, speaks of her career, starting business afresh, her
aspirations, and much more.
What is it like starting from scratch
following the heavy looting of your
business during last year’s #EndSARS
protest?
Honestly, starting from scratch is worse than
I expected. After what happened, I took it lightly
and was happy that there was at least no life
claimed. After all, a lot of people lost their lives
but what I lost was mere property and monetary
valuables. I just took everything in good fate
and planned to start all over again this year. But
honestly, it’s been very emotional for me; going
to my store and seeing the extent of damage
that was done, including infrastructural damage
that I had to take care of. Going somewhere
else was not an option for me because people
have known me with that shop aside the fact
that it has a lot of exposure. Going to acquire
new fittings like air conditioners, TV sets and
all, was really painful because the prices of
items have really skyrocketed due to the
exchange rate. I haven’t got any assistance
from the Lagos State government for restarting
this even though they had promised to assist.
What’s the most difficult part of re-starting a
business at this time?
The most difficult part of restarting a
business at this time is the dollar exchange
rate. Apart from the electronic appliances that
had to be put in place, the goods were also an
issue. I actually had just introduced a new line
of business and brought in new goods two days
before the looting took place. I had just gone
into male designer shoes and jewelry. I still had
my goods in their cartons. So, it was a huge
blow; starting all over again and re-importing
those items is really very challenging.
The pandemic negatively surprised movie
practitioners. For the future, what should
actors do to prepare for the rainy day?
The pandemic affected everybody; including
non-movie practitioners. Employers also laid-off
workers as a result. For movie practitioners, I
would say everyone should have a niche and
probably get inclined with some kind of
business. Have a virtual presence too; like how
a lot of people were opening YouTube channels
so you’re able to have things going on for you
at every point in time and be able to meet the
demands of your consumers.
What resolution have you taken regarding
your career this year?
This year, I’ve made the decision to face my
career squarely; give it quality time. I’m going to
be producing some movies from some of the
scripts I’ve written in the past; I was just waiting
for the right time to bring them to picture. I’ve
made arrangements for my own equipment. I
actually want to also put up my own production
house so I can make quality movies.
You’ve excelled as an entertainer and an
entrepreneur; which of these lines of work
are you most passionate about?
Being an entertainer is something that I love;
the same way I am also passionate about
being an entrepreneur. I generally love to make
an impact in people’s lives. Through my
business, I’m able to empower women and
help them look beautiful; and that is one thing I
am very proud of.
How did you discover your talent in acting?
I started acting right from my kindergarten
days. I acted in church dramas and also, while
in secondary school, I was actively involved in
stage plays and other performing arts. So,
when I got the opportunity to stare in my first
movie ‘Fear of the Unknown’ in 2001, the skills
came naturally as I read the scripts.
What movie gave you your first break and
how long did it take for it to happen?
I started acting, like I said, in 2001 officially.
The movie that however gave me my first break
was ‘Ada Mbano’, a comedy movie where I
played a funny and hilarious character. That
happened much later because I took a series of
breaks from acting at different points due to
education and marriage.
Which of your movies really challenged
your creativity?
Every movie I have done has been really
challenging in one way or the other because,
as we know, it’s not easy to switch roles. Every
script I get, I internalise and become the
character. At that point, Uche Elendu is no
longer the one there because I have to make
you watch it to believe the character. There’s
this movie I shot recently ‘March 26’. I
remember I had to make it as real as possible
just like I do to every role I’ve ever taken.
What’s the most interesting part of being an
actress?
It’s the fact that everybody wants to be like
you because they think you have everything
good going for you. You also have a lot of
people look up to you and appreciate you. Also,
you make money from doing what you love to
do.
What are you doing to mentor and support
INTERVIEW
aspiring female movie stars?
There is really nothing much I can do
except for setting the pace and living an
exemplary life; especially now that there is
social media and everybody is looking up to
you and learning from your lifestyle. Most
people do not realise this but in one way or
the other, our lifestyles affect the lifestyles of
others—they emulate our lifestyles.
But one would have expected to see more
of you in comedy with the popularity
brought you by your role in ‘Ada
Mbano’...
The truth is that after I did ‘Ada Mbano’,
people started stereotyping me on into
comedy movies; I started getting a lot of
comedy scripts and actually did a couple of
other comedy movies. But I didn’t just want
to be pushed to that corner of the industry
because I’m not a clown. I, therefore, started
turning them down at a point since it’s not
like I can’t do another kind of movie; I can
get into any character—whether horror,
romance, high school, action or whatever.
anymore.
What will ever make you turn
down a role?
I will turn down a role if it
doesn’t suit me.
What’s your most-priced
fashion item?
I don’t want to sound
vain but I love to buy
expensive designer
bags and shoes;
I love good
things.
What was growing up like for you?
I’m the eldest and only daughter in a
family of four children. I come from a
Christian family. My father was a civil
servant, my mother was a teacher; you know
that kind of background. We were brought up
to live right. As the only girl, I didn’t really
have a playmate. Every of my move was
monitored . I got every necessary thing I
wanted all through my childhood; and I also
couldn’t deviate from the upbringing I got
from my parents even after I had grown into
an adult.
What childhood memories do you
cherish the most?
I grew up in an estate that was
surrounded by a Lagoon. Everybody
in that estate was like a family. We
used to have concerts. We would
also sit together and be told stories.
It was a serene, calm environment.
Everybody had love for each other
and also looked out for each other. I
don’t see those kinds of things
I generally
love to make
impact in
people’s
lives.
WHAT MEN CRAVE FOR
DURING MATING - pt 1
A
number of men are often pretty
predictable in bed and thus they
may not really need to ask for
anything. This however, should
not stop you from doing things
that will make him happy once in a while. In
case you are wondering what your man
actually desires and wants in bed, then this is
your best bet as the listed pointers below will
help to set you in the right direction.
One of the commonest complaints from
guys is that they often have to initiate sex
with their ladies: They long for you to make the
first move sometimes even though most of them
are more than happy to do it. There are times when
they really want to see their woman initiate,
seduce, desire and make them feel attractive
including, coming up with new sex positions to
experiment. So ladies don’t hesitate in trying out
new positions with your man because you now
know that he loves it. The fact that you took the
initiative is sure to make your man happy and
satisfied.
Men really love it when their ladies talk dirty:
This is misunderstood by some women who takes it
literally by going on and on about the smallest thing in
sex which is not what he wants Men want you to say
few dirty and seductive words in the middle of love
making and it will shock you to see how your man gets
aroused; simple word like harder, it feels so good, am so
wet, boo keep going, are some talks that are more than
enough to do wonders.
And they go absolutely nuts when
you surprise them in bed: Don’t be too
predictable when it comes to intercourse when
it comes to sex, as guys love surprise just as
much as you do, when it comes to sex.
Surprise him first thing in the morning with
blow job or unexpectedly make out with him.
Also you can bring in new sex positions and do
stuff that he thought you never liked. Go the
extra mile and buy some really sexy lingerie
and treat him to a surprise sexy dance, and
just see how he starts craving for you more
than ever.
He loves foreplay: Ignore whatever you
have heard or read online about men not liking
foreplay, this is wrong assumption. It’s not
every guy that directly wants to jump at
penetration’, a number of them love foreplay
and they want it just as much as women do.
They love the slow and sexy build up. When
you are at it, give him enough foreplay.
Your man wants you to show him how
you like it: Being a visual learner, he will
appreciate it if you showed him, with your
hands. Be free to move his hands, position
your body, and use verbal and nonverbal
communication to ensure a satisfying time for
the two of you. Get on the bed and
touch yourself while you order him to
look but not touch this is a, sexy way
to put him in the mood.
Wants it outside of the
bedroom: He loves variety, so
keep it exciting by exploring new
places to play, like the stair case,
kitchen table, laundry room, in the
car, or even inside the car. Engaging
in sex in new areas can be a lot of
fun and helps to create opportunities
for role play.
TO BE CONTINUED...
Furniture
Soft, cozy furniture helps soften
areas by eliminating hard edges
of a room. Use tufted,
upholstered ottomans as
opposed to wood varieties.
Fabric softens hard edges and
creates an inherently romantic
and cozy atmosphere at the
same time.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR
LIVING ROOM COZY AND
ROMANTIC
A romantic and cozy living room is one of the most desired
designs for those who see their houses as sanctuaries. Welldesigned
living rooms with warm and inviting atmospheres
are hard to come by on their own.
Warm colours and comfortable furniture create an intimate
atmosphere in a cozy and romantic setting.
An elegant and cozy living room makeover will create a cozy
and romantic space right in your living room, to enjoy for many
years to come.
6
/ April 11, 2021
Accessories
Make the living room cozier with
a variety of soft throw pillows
dotted around the sofa.
Decorate a tabletop with
bouquets of fresh greenery in a
silver vase to enhance the
romantic décor. Create a
romantic and cozy atmosphere
by adding candles and
showcasing them in groups will
complete the look.
Walls and Ceiling
Make the walls dark in colour.
Dark walls give a feeling of
intimacy and coziness. That
said, choose a warm colour
palette to give the space an
appealing appearance.

The Life And Times Of
Prince Philip
The Duke Of Edinburgh
By - Josephine Agbonkhese
The British royal family was last
Friday thrown into mourning as
Prince Philip, the husband of Queen
Elizabeth II and the longest-serving
British consort, took a bow at the
age of 99.
Though the Duke of Edinburgh had a
successful naval career, his most prominent
role, however, was that of a dedicated
husband who supported his wife as she served
as head of the Commonwealth since 1952.
Born the Prince of Greece and Denmark
on June 10, 1921, Prince Philip had a
tumultuous childhood which, no doubt, shaped
his personality and lifestyle; one which was
somewhat later constricted by his role in the
British Royal Family.
The Duke of Edinburgh known to have
adapted quickly and capably to his work in
support of the Queen whom he married in
November 1947, had accompanied her on
countless royal visits and tours where he
gained a reputation for his unexpected and
blunt remarks.
Throughout, the Prince Philip remained a
dedicated husband to the Queen and played
an active role in his public duties.
He was the patron or president of
780 organisations, including The Duke of
Edinburgh’s Award, which he founded in
1956. The award operated in more than 140
countries and celebrates young people serving
in their communities.
Prince Philip and the Queen became the
first couple in the Royal Family to celebrate
their diamond wedding or 60th anniversary.
As a steady figure in the Royal Family
for more than half a century, Prince Philip’s
contribution to the monarchy was perhaps best
summed up by the Queen herself.
“He is someone who doesn’t take easily to
compliments,” she said during a lunch to mark
their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997.
“He has, quite simply, been my strength
and stay all these years, and I, and his whole
family, and this and many other countries, owe
him a debt greater than he would ever claim or
we shall ever know,” she added.
The queen, a very private person not given
to extravagant displays of affection, also once
called him “her rock” in public.
His bluntness didn’t take away from
his sweetness though, as, in private, Philip
called his wife Lilibet; but referred to her in
conversation with others as “The Queen.”
Together, the couple raised four children
and have eight grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.
Prince Philip will forever be remembered
as a supportive husband who cut short his
career to stand beside his wife as Queen of
England.
His was an extraordinary life of service and
duty. He was The Queen’s crown.
being revealed as the 2021
winner of Mrs. Sri Lanka, a
Jurie, according to local media reports. Mrs. World
Caroline Jurie, was later released on bail after she
was arrested in Sri Lanka for allegedly injuring a
pageant contestant in an on-stage row.
The prize was returned to the new Queen on
Tuesday at a news conference after pageant
organisers confirmed she was not a divorcee.
They have also apologised to her.
The official Mrs. World Instagram account
acknowledged Mrs. De Silva’s victory in a brief
post with her photo on Tuesday, where they
wrote :
“A true queen is not a woman who snatches
another woman’s crown, but a woman who
secretly sets another woman’s crown!!”
The winner of the Mrs. Sri Lanka contest goes
on to compete in the Mrs. World contest. Mrs.
Jurie won that competition in 2020 in Las Vegas.
Encomium as pastor Ituah
Ighodalo clocks 60
Pastor of Trinity House Church, Ituah Ighodalo,
clocked 60 on Tuesday April 6, and it was encomium
galore from friends and well-wishers, extolling the virtues
of the man of God on various social media platforms.
However, ones that caught our attention was that of
former beauty queen Helen Prest-Ajayi, who in a post on
Instagram, described Ighodalo as one who “embodies
the phrase ‘the good Shepherd,’” and “tends to his flock
with all sincerity”.
She added that her admiration for him was born of
the fact that she had known and watched him closely for
over 40 years.
“Throughout the years he had shown
#whatwouldjesusdo traits. He was always turn-the-othercheek
kind. In the early days as an accountant he did
most everybody’s work for free, (I’m sure much to the
exasperation of his elder brother Asue), secure in the
knowledge that his God is able. He would smile and say
don’t worry about it,” she wrote.
“Pastor Ituah is the epitome of cardinal cool, never
angry or flustered, always stoic in his belief in God even
when it wasn’t fashionable.”
