A letter from

FATHER TIM

DEAR FRIENDS,

Thank you for being a part of the 2021 Pope Francis

Center Annual Gala. The past year has been

tremendously challenging for all of us. Even beyond

the obstacles we faced at Pope Francis Center, I

know many of you in our extended family faced

uncertainty, hardship, loneliness and loss. Despite

that, you are here with us tonight, and I am eternally

grateful for your support.

If anything positive can be said about COVID-19,

the pandemic showed what our community can

do when it comes together to make a difference in

people’s lives. Building on that to create a bridge to

the future for Detroit’s chronically homeless is what

we are celebrating now.

Tonight’s honoree knows all about how to build things.

Jim Farley has made a career of building vintage car

engines, automotive brands, sales numbers and

successful global company operations. Yet he never

forgot there are people much less fortunate than us.

Even before he became CEO of Ford last October,

Jim would take time from his busy schedule to do

volunteer shifts, unassumingly handing out bowls of

soup or distributing socks to our guests.

Throughout the years Jim has also been an

invaluable resource to me personally. I am so glad

that we can repay a small amount of his generosity

and kindness by honoring him tonight.

I want to also express my gratitude to the staff and

volunteers who, in the face of ever-changing and

dangerous conditions, found a way to continue serving

our guests. As many people know, when the pandemic

first hit, I made a promise to our guests that I would not

leave. That we would stay, and we would get through

this together. And that we did, with your help. I am so

proud of the over 200 people we served daily, the nearly

110,000 meals, the approximately 2,400 loads of laundry,

almost 5,000 showers. And, finally, of the nearly 200

vaccines we distributed. I have no doubt that we saved

lives through your hard work.

As we emerge from the pandemic, Pope Francis Center

is about to embark on an exciting journey. We are laying

the groundwork to develop a bridge housing complex

that will provide a pathway to a better life for the

chronically homeless in Detroit.

Thank you for taking part in our virtual event this evening.

Even though the format is different, your generosity is

what makes our work possible.

Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,

Fr. Tim McCabe, SJ,

Executive Director

ZITO-BRENDER

LEGACY AWARD

In 2016, the Zito and Brender families helped establish the first Pope Francis Center Gala

to honor the memory of Mark Zito and Kristin Brender.

Mark and Kristin were friends and fellow parishioners at St. Blase Catholic Church in

Sterling Heights. While Mark and Kristin both passed away tragically young, they left

a legacy of deep faith and tremendous compassion for those most in need. Mark and

Kristin’s friends, family and community from St. Blase have become regular volunteers at

the Pope Francis Center, and their support remains critical to this event.

The Zito-Brender Legacy Award was established to honor special friends of the Pope

Francis Center who share Mark and Kristin’s dedication to serving and empowering others.

This year’s winner has brought hundreds of his own friends and family to volunteer at the

Pope Francis Center, and serves our homeless brothers and sisters with tremendous love

and humility. We are proud to present this year’s award to Jim Farley.

Tonight, our honoree will receive a miniature of the Homeless Jesus statue by famed

sculptor Timothy Schmalz. The full statue was installed outside Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit

Church in 2015. It depicts Jesus as a homeless person sleeping on a bench and reminds us

all to see Jesus in everyone we meet.

12

JIM

FARLEY

HONOREE

Jim Farley’s connection with the Pope Francis Center goes

back decades. When he was a teenager, his grandfather

would bring him down to our original location at Saints

Peter & Paul Jesuit Church on St. Antoine to feed the

homeless.

Jim did not have a typical American upbringing. Born in

Argentina, he grew up in Brazil and Canada before attending

high school in Rhode Island. After earning degrees

in economics and computer science at Georgetown

University, he moved west and earned an MBA from UCLA.

Cars and driving were always a passion for Jim. When he

was 14, he had a summer job rebuilding Ford engines at a

factory in California. He earned enough money to buy and

rebuild a 1966 Mustang. He loved the car so much he drove

it back to Michigan — without a driver’s license.

After spending two years at IBM, Jim took a job in product

planning for Toyota’s luxury Lexus division. He rose through

the sales and marketing ranks and launched the Scion

brand before being put in charge of Lexus.

In 2007, Jim did something that surprised many in the auto

industry, but not those who knew him. He joined Ford

Motor Company as its chief marketing officer. Jim’s roots

with Ford run deep. His grandfather joined Henry Ford in

1914 and worked at the Rouge plant in Dearborn before

owning a Ford supplier plant and becoming a car dealer.

Jim took on bigger responsibilities at Ford, including

running its European operations from 2015-2017. Since his

return to the U.S., Jim has been not only busy at Ford, where

he became CEO in October. He has generously made time

for the Pope Francis Center. He has been an invaluable

resource in fundraising and strategic guidance. When the

temperatures reach dangerously low levels, he is one of

the first people to email and text Fr. Tim McCabe asking

what we need to make sure people living on the streets

stay safe. And when his schedule allows, he signs up for

volunteer shifts to distribute food and pitch in wherever

else is needed.

As a Detroit resident, Jim knows this city is only as strong

as its most vulnerable citizens. He has been integral to our

work developing a plan to fund and build a bridge housing

complex for the chronically homeless.

As we honor Jim tonight, we are humbled and thankful for

all that he has done for those without shelter in this city.
