A Culinary Journey through
to Basics - perfect egg recipes
Northern Ireland
The competition
page returns
04
At last, as I write, we are hopefully
nearing the end of the restriction
tunnel. We should proceed
with caution, but the tantalising
glimpses of life returning to normal
are just great to savour.
The past year has been fraught with
challenges, but hasn’t it been filled
with learning too? Of our resilience,
our adaptability and of course, a big
old beacon shining on the things
that really matter. It’s hard to think
it’s been over a year since we went
into the first lockdown - I naively
thought it would be a month or
two. Here we are, more than 365
days on - a little battle weary, but all
the wiser. But, it’s shaped us - and
shaped the way we make our little
magazine too!
First up, we’ve got some tasty egg
recipes which will take you right
back to nailing those basics, plus
some ideas on how to take them to
the next level.
How can your
garden grow?
we’ve gathered together lots of
oarding orchard
Robin Fletcher explains
The grounds at Marlborough College
When someone as respected as Sir David
Attenborough warns, as he did when
addressing the UN Security Council recently,
that climate change could result in a global
crisis comparable to the one which enveloped
the world in the years after the First World
War, you can’t ignore it.
While the majority of the world’s main focus
has understandably been on the fight against
coronavirus for the past 12 months, it’s vital
that we don’t lose sight of the threat posed
by climate change. Climate change affects us
all and it will be here long after COVID-19 has
been brought under control.
The Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA)
has long been championing the idea that our
member schools can play an important role
in tackling climate change. It’s a global issue,
and as we have more than 600 members in
36 countries around the world, our schools
are uniquely well-placed to lead the way on
sustainability and encourage the generations
of students who will pass through their
boarding houses in the coming years to help
protect the environment throughout their lives.
Back in 2014, the BSA launched the Boarding
Orchard initiative, which encourages boarding
schools to plant fruit trees in their grounds,
symbolising growth and caring for the
environment. Our aim is for it become to be
6 | www.minervamagazines.co.uk
the ‘largest’ orchard by geography anywhere
in the world.
By involving students in tree planting, schools
can also help to make environmentallyfriendly
practices part of students’ ingrained
behaviour from a very early age, helping to
ensure they are fully aware how everything
they do can affect the planet. And this will
help leave a lasting legacy, with students
imparting their knowledge to their own
children so it is passed on from generation to
generation.
Our progress to date has been good. Since
we launched the Boarding Orchard, more
than 150 schools in the UK, Switzerland,
Russia and the United States have planted
more than 180 trees. The Boarding Orchard
has also recently received the royal seal of
approval. His Royal Highness, the Prince
of Wales has long been a great supporter
of a wide range of causes and projects
relating to protecting the environment and
sustainability. In late 2020, he lent his support
to the BBC Countryfile programme’s ‘Plant
Britain’ campaign, a two-year project which
will see 750,000 trees planted. Following this,
we contacted him to make him aware of our
initiative.
In a reply to BSA, a Clarence House
spokesperson passed on the Prince’s
‘warmest wishes for every success with the
project’, calling the Boarding Orchard ‘an
excellent way of promoting environmental
awareness.’
With the Prince’s encouragement, and with
more schools pledging their support by
joining the Boarding Orchard, we’re very
excited about its future.
Orchard, please visit the BSA website: www.
Trees to the fore
at Marlborough
College
Marlborough College has a large estate
which involves the management, protection
and enhancement of 627 listed trees, the
size of a small forest, situated on our
almost three hundred acres...
Large areas of the estate are governed by Conservation Bands,
Wildlife and Countryside Acts and individual Tree Protection
Orders. These codes of practice are all followed carefully and are
extremely important in ensuring our landscapes are protected
and preserved for future generations.
All trees on Marlborough College land are subject to vigorous
priority one and two inspections, carried out by Certhia
Consulting Ltd., a specialist arboricultural service provider.
The tree collection at the College is greatly varied in age, genus
and location: from the semi-mature Koelreuteria paniculata
(Golden Rain Tree) in the Terrace Border to the mature
Liriodendron tulipifera (Tulip Tree) in the Masters Lodge, to
mention just a couple of our beautiful specimens.
Alongside the aforementioned established trees, the College
is privileged to be part of the BSA’s Boarding Orchard scheme
which we joined in 2014 with the ceremonial planting of a
delightful Cydonia oblonga (old fashioned Quince) at the main
entrance to the campus. Fruit trees have also been planted at
The Hermitage, Summerfield House, Preshute House and the
Master’s Lodge. Indeed, the apples from the trees at Summerfield
are made into apple juice by pupils and sold as part of our
charitable activities.
Eleanor Kerrigan is Head of Gardens at the College. She said
“In order for the College and I to be effective custodians of our
landscape, continued planting of trees is vital. Since joining the
College three years ago, I’m proud to say the Gardens Team
have been responsible for planting in excess of 4,000 whips and
young trees, which will be allowed to grow on for hedging and
landscaping purposes. As I move forward with tree management
on behalf of the College, I will actively continue to care for
these lovely trees, which form and offer such unique visual,
environmental and health benefits to our campus and local
community.”
CAPTURE MOMENTS &
MEMORIES WITH MOORE
PHOTOGRAPHICS
Photographer Neil Moore, who has a small
studio at Cadley, near Marlborough, works with
families and individuals across Wiltshire to
do just that – capture moments and memories
which mean something special...
From beautiful imagery of you, your dog,
your horse, your car, your home, your
garden – whatever your pride and joy
may be…Neil will enable you to capture
those special moments which make up
the rich tapestry of life.
With a love of the countryside and
agriculture, Neil can often be seen around
Wiltshire taking in the landscape and the
atmosphere of our beautiful county.
“I love the visual world,” Neil said. “We
are a very visual society now and it’s
very easy to take a picture of this or that
when we are out and about. However
having professional imagery done around
something or someone who is special to
you creates something quite different.
“A good photographer will work hard to
capture personality, take images which
show emotion and friendship, or simple
joy and delight. Good images really
do speak a thousand words if they are
framed on your sideboard, on your wall,
they keep memories and experiences
alive.
“If they are around a business, they can
speak to value, price point and service
quality.”
The quality of Neil’s work was recognised
in 2017 when he was awarded a
licentiateship of the British Institution
of Professional Photography. This BIPP
accreditation is a worldwide recognition
of excellence and requires months of
work to achieve. In gaining the award,
Neil focussed on his passions – Wiltshire,
the landscape, agriculture, farming,
anything to do with boats, planes, trains
or vehicles of any kind.
“Good images really do speak a
thousand words if they are framed on
your sideboard, on your wall, they keep
memories and experiences alive.”
Do you have any lovely pictures of your
horse or you with your horse? What
about with your dog? Or your dogs on
their own? Do you have any professional
images of your pride and joy – that
classic car you’ve been restoring or that
wild garden you’ve been nurturing?
“Ask yourself this,” Neil said. “If and when
the time comes that you no longer have
your beloved animal or your classic car
is sold on, will you regret not having that
memory? If the answer is yes, do get in
touch.”
Get out more
Switch to an e-bike!
There’s never been a better time to get on
your bike...
GP’s are being urged to prescribe cycling as they know it
provides many benefits. Not only does it contribute to general
well-being (in all senses) but it also helps to improve congestion
on our roads and the quality of the air we breathe. Now with the
Government’s Fix Your Bike Scheme contributing £50 towards the
repair of a used bicycle, help is also at hand to those with limited
funds.
An e-bike helps all ages but particularly those that are older,
less fit or put off by the physical effort of an ordinary bike. It is
easier and less sweat than a traditional bicycle, as an e-bike has
a ‘pedal assist’ motor to help cycle up hills and tackle longer
journeys. It is also reassuring to know that you have back-up
onboard when you start venturing further afield. In a recent study
1 in 3 felt an e-bike made them feel more confident to tackle hills
and keep up with traffic and a good many people are using an
e-bike to support recovery from injuries or health difficulties.
e-motion have increased sales during the Covid-19 lockdown,
but at our shop in Swindon we still find the time and patience to
help you make the right decision. We stock an extremely wide
selection of electric bikes and are happy to answer any questions
you might have. So please do give us a call – and come in for a
test ride!
poached eggs and dippy boiled eggs.
Always start with the freshest possible
eggs, then...
PERFECTLY POACHED
Two must do tips before you start - add
at least 1 tsp light coloured vinegar to
your water. The second is to sieve your
egg. When you crack an egg you’ll notice
that there’s a firmer white and a more
liquidy white. Well, that liquidy white is
what creates all those white wispy bits.
So add the egg to a fine mesh sieve/
strainer and the thinner, more liquid white
is removed, leaving only the firmer white
which will envelop the yolk.
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then
reduce to low (or turn off the heat). Crack
the egg in a fine mesh sieve (over a small
bowl) and remove the liquidy whites. For
a firm white and runny yolk you’ll want to
poach the eggs for 3-4 minutes.
DELIGHTFULLY DIPPY
The timing here is based on using room
temperature eggs. For a set white with a
runny yolk, you want to boil for four-five
minutes. Poke a hole in the top of the
eggs with a needle or egg-puncher before
you start.
THOMAS FRAKE’S
PORK HOLSTEIN
Holstein usually uses white veal, but you
can use pork, chicken or turkey. This
recipe uses tenderised pork loin, breaded
and fried in butter until golden, and then
finished with chopped anchovies and
capers in butter. A Braddock White egg
is essential to finishing the dish as it
provides a rich golden yolk that becomes
the luxurious sauce.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking time: 12 minutes
Serves: 2
INGREDIENTS
2 pork loin steaks
100g flour
1 Clarence Court egg
100g Panko breadcrumbs
25g parmesan, grated
50g salted butter
25ml rapeseed oil
4 Clarence Court Braddock White Duck
eggs
4 anchovies, finely chopped
20g capers
Ingredients for the pickled cabbage:
¼ white cabbage
½ Bramley apple
90ml white wine vinegar
30g sugar
10g fennel seeds
METHOD
Bring the vinegar, sugar and fennel seeds
to the boil and remove from the heat.
Finely shred the cabbage and apple and
submerge into the vinegar. Leave to cool,
then refrigerate.
Flatten the pork with a rolling pin until
5mm thick. Grate parmesan into the
breadcrumbs. Dredge the pork in flour,
then egg, then breadcrumbs, and repeat.
In a deep frying pan, heat the butter and
rapeseed oil on a mid-low heat until
foaming. Fry the pork for 3 minutes a side,
or until golden and crisp, being careful
not to burn. Remove from the frying pan
to a tray, spoon over some of the hot
butter, and keep warm in a low oven.
Fry the eggs in a little oil until the white is
cooked but the yolk is still liquid.
Add the pork Holstein to the plate, spoon
over the capers and very finely chopped
anchovies. Add the fried egg on top and
the pickled cabbage alongside.
SWEETCORN CHILLI
FRITTERS
Sweet and spicy crunchy corn fritters are
a fantastic carrier for Burford Brown eggs
and fresh guacamole.
Preparation time: 20 minutes
www.minervamagazines.co.uk | 13

Cooking time: 15 minutes
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS
1 small can of sweetcorn, drained
(approx. 198g)
6 spring onions, trimmed and sliced
50g courgette, coarsely grated
50g carrot, peeled, coarsely grated
A small bunch fresh coriander, leaves
picked and stalks finely chopped
1 red or green chilli, de-seeded and
chopped
2 limes
½ teaspoon smoked paprika
Salt and pepper
60g self-raising flour
5 Clarence Court Burford Brown eggs
50 ml milk
2 ripe avocadoes
10 cherry tomatoes
Olive oil
METHOD
Drain the sweet corn and add to a
mixing bowl with 3 sliced spring onions,
grated courgette, carrot, sliced coriander
stalks, half the chopped chilli and a few
scrapings of lime zest. Mix together and
then add the paprika, season well with
salt and pepper then stir in the flour.
Crack one egg into a separate bowl,
whisk then pour into the grated mix with
the milk. Mix well and place to one side.
Peel and de-stone the avocadoes, chop
the flesh and scoop into a bowl. Chop
the tomatoes and add with the remaining
sliced spring onion, chopped chilli,
roughly chop a few coriander leaves,
squeeze over the lime juice and add a
splash of olive oil. Season well, stir and
place to one side.
Poach the 4 eggs to your liking and use
a slotted spoon to place them in a bowl
of cold water. Keep the cooking water on
the hob on a low heat so you can re-heat
the eggs when ready.
Place a large frying pan on a medium
heat. Add enough olive oil to make a
thin layer. Test the oil is hot enough by
dropping a spoon of mixture into the
pan if it bubbles it’s good to go. Add
spoonfuls of batter into the pan and fry
on both sides until golden. Use a fish
slice to transfer to a plate lined with
kitchen roll and then on to warm serving
plates. Repeat until all the mixture has
gone. Re-heat the eggs in the pan of
simmering water and place on top of the
fritters. Divide up the guacamole and
scatter over the coriander leaves.
FRESH EGG PASTA
DOUGH
You can either eat it straightaway or air dry
a batch and then store it in an airtight jar
for another day. To make a truly rich and
bright pasta dough, use only egg yolks
(not the whites) in the dough, at a ratio of 2
egg yolks to 100g Tipo 00 pasta flour.
INGREDIENTS
4 Large Burford Brown eggs
400g Tipo 00 pasta flour
METHOD
If using a food processor, crack in the
eggs and tip in the pasta flour. Pulse a
few times until it comes together like
thick breadcrumbs. If it’s looking quite
dry add a tiny splash of water or olive oil
and pulse a couple more times. Tip the
dough out on a clean work surface and
knead well for a few minutes until it feels
springy and quite firm. Shape the dough
into a disc and wrap in cling film, and
then place in the fridge to rest for around
an hour.
If you’re making the dough by hand,
make a mound of flour on a clean work
surface and then make a well in the
flour. Crack the eggs into the middle
and use a dinner knife to incorporate
the flour gently into the centre and
whisk it into the eggs. Continue mixing
in the flour and then use your hands to
combine everything together and form
a rough dough. If it’s feeling a little dry
just sprinkle over a little water or olive
oil and start kneading. Knead well for a
few minutes until the dough feels springy
and quite firm. Shape into a disc as
before. The dough is now ready for you
to roll and shape as you prefer.
ON YOUR
How much are we all looking forward to
summer 2021? Overseas holidays may be
just waiting to be discovered, along with
One shining example is the home wine
industry and the many award-winning
wines now produced, attracting high
praise from pundits here and across the
globe.
England’s vineyards are looking forward
to throwing open their doors and
welcoming visitors back again. Happily,
the full lifting of restrictions falls during
English Wine Week (Saturday 19 –
Sunday 27 June). During this week, the
growers and producers in England are
inviting everyone to celebrate with some
English wine – look out for events and
promotions.
English and Welsh wines are gaining
popularity and are easy to discover,
buy and enjoy – many are now readilyavailable
in supermarkets, independent
retailers and restaurant lists. Last year
retail giants Waitrose, Majestic and
Sainsburys all reported a boom in sales
of English wines. And course you can
buy direct from the vineyards themselves,
either online or from the cellar door. Of
the 700 or so vineyards in England and
Wales, over 200 vineyards are open to
visitors and summer is the perfect time to
visit them.
Vineyards now offer a range of
experiences from tours through a
vineyard, to visiting the cellar door for a
tasting. Some have a shop, restaurant,
and a variety of accommodation options.
Visitors will take away some great
memories and new discoveries – and
hopefully a bottle or two to enjoy at home
and with friends.
Some vineyards have got together to
promote their region and enhance other
local attractions: Kent, Surrey, Sussex
and Hampshire all have such trails,
and launching just ahead of English
Wine Week is the first Yorkshire wine
trail. There are also an array of wine
tour companies offering vineyard visit
packages in the UK.
So let’s enjoy a summer of English wine
and celebrate one of our home grown
successes – cheers!
Maud heath vineyard's
star wine...
Frequently listed as a star wine by Matthew
Jukes of the Daily Mail, and hailed by the
paper as ‘The best red wine in the country’,
featured as a top wine in The Independent,
and mentioned in Oz Clarke’s book, Maud
Heath Vineyard’s Tytherton Red is a real treat.
Full bodied by comparison to other English wines despite
being Pinot Noir dominant, an incredibly difficult grape to
grow in England as it often ends up too light, however with the
microclimate of this unique site, this wine beats the odds of
growing a top red in England.
Winner of Decanter and IWC awards, not only is this wine of
quality within England but on the world stage. Deep crimson red
in colour, with aromas of cassis and red plum on the nose. The
palate is medium bodied with a soft, silky texture, and a subtle
hint of spice from the oak, which leads to a long, moreish finish.
The wine has been gently aged in French oak barrels for five
months, to add more depth and complexity. Looking for a vegan
or vegetarian option? Then this wine is also for you.
You can find this smooth local wine at Waitrose in Marlborough,
and other Waitrose stores within the area, as well as online at
Waitrose Wine Cellar.
LIVELY COMMUNITIES BEAT
LOCKDOWN ISOLATION FOR
OVER 60s
As we all follow the roadmap out of
lockdown, many will be reflecting on
how the pandemic has been particularly
difficult for over 60s. Many were unable
to see friends and family, making them
feel increasingly isolated...
Residents at later living specialist Rangeford Villages’
developments, however, had an easier time. Living as part of
friendly communities, they have been able to spend the lockdown
surrounded by like-minded individuals with support and care
available should they need it, whilst remaining in their own home.
At Wadswick Green in Wiltshire, onsite teams are on call 24/7 to
provide help, companionship and support. Set among 25 acres
of landscaped, beautiful grounds, Wadswick Green offers a
selection of 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments for sale exclusively for the
over 60s.
In line with the latest Government easing of restrictions, residents
at Wadswick Green will celebrate the reopening of the everpopular
village restaurant - The Greenhouse. Residents and
families will now be able to enjoy table service outside on the
terrace and within the purpose-built marquee.
The village offers an array of activities for residents to develop
hobbies, socialise with one another and stay mentally stimulated,
as well as access to a number of communal amenities, such
as swimming pool, gym, hair and beauty salons. Hilary Flack,
resident at Wadswick Green says: “I’m looking forward to
the re-opening of the facilities especially the swimming pool
and the new putting green, as well as enjoying time with my
grandchildren. My children and their families will have the
pleasure of staying in the Wadswick Green guest suite when they
visit in the coming months. It will be wonderful to catch up with
them in person.”
Wadswick Green is part of a new and exciting range of retirement
living villages across the UK with a flagship sister village being
developed in Cirencester. In the heart of the Cotswolds, nearby
Siddington Park offers a selection of 1, 2 and 3 bed apartments
starting from £299,950.
HOW CAN YOUR GARDEN
GROW
In these strange and unprecedented times,
our gardens have never been more important.
They have been the meeting place of
family and friends and a real saviour in the
face of so much difficulty. Whether you
have green fingers or black thumbs, we
have lots of inspiration for your space and
ways to make it work harder for you!
IDEAS FOR
SMALL GARDENS
LET THERE
BE LIGHTS
Small gardens have a lot more potential than you may
appreciate. Whether dealing with a long narrow space
behind a period home, a cramped backyard that lacks
privacy, or even a little courtyard, the possibilities are
endless. So don’t write off your small outdoor area just yet...
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO GROW?
Are you hoping to grow cut flowers, your favourite herbs,
or a few vegetables? When space is limited, it is especially
important to determine which of these are worth growing
yourself, and which are better to purchase seasonally from
your local farmer’s market or shop. Focus on growing
flowers and produce that are usually expensive, hard to
find, have a short shelf life, or you use regularly.
CREATE SEATING WITHIN BORDERS
A great idea is to add seating to the edges of raised beds
- it makes otherwise unused space a flexible element for
socialising. Sleepers are a great option, or patio slabs on
small diving walls. Have a folding bistro table on hand to
create a dining area where needed.
MAKING YOUR OWN GARDEN
LIGHTING PLAN
Garden lighting usually serves two purposes. Firstly to
provide functional light and secondly to create an attractive
atmosphere. Here is how to plan your space:
STEP 1: SKETCH YOUR GARDEN AREA
Sketch your garden area as close to scale as possible. Indicate
important areas of your garden such as the terrace, seating
area or other garden features you wish to illuminate.
STEP 2: CONSIDER WHAT AREAS NEED THE
MOST LIGHTING
Decide which areas in your garden need the most lighting. Are
there certain parts of your garden that you wish to have more
atmospheric lighting? Or are there certain areas that need
more functional bright light? Is an extra lamp needed outside
your front door? Indicate these places on your plan.
STEP 3: DETERMINE THE TYPE OF LIGHTING NEEDED
Think about what kind of lighting is best for the areas that you
have outlined. Think about how much light intensity you will
need. Decide whether you want functional or mood lighting.
Are you looking to highlight a particular tree or shrubs?
Consider alternating between bright light and softer lights to
create a beautiful effect.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
What about vertical gardens? Railing planters? Hanging
baskets for strawberries?
CREATE PRIVACY
You may not have room for large evergreen trees and
shrubs to create privacy. But, would a row of one of the
many columnar varieties that provide height—without
the width—work? If only seasonal screening is needed,
perhaps narrow, columnar, deciduous trees or shrubs
would be suitable? Or perhaps growing well-behaved
climbers (e.g. jasmine or annual vines) on a vertical trellis
would be the best solution.
ADD A WATER FEATURE
Water features are always a great addition to a garden.
While a pond and waterfall may not be realistic, a simple
recirculating wall fountain or bubbling tabletop pot may be
the answer.
MAKE EVERY SQUARE INCH COUNT
Focus on high-value trees, shrubs, and perennials that
offer multiple seasons of interest with attractive leaves,
seasonal flowers, unique textures, colourful bark and/or
great autumnal colour.
STEP 4: DETERMINE THE LIGHT DIREC-
TION FOR EACH LIGHT POINT
Also figure out the direction your light needs to face
to achieve your desired light effect. Are you wanting
to uplight a fence or wall? Are you looking to
illuminate the driveway with a recessed ground
spot and if that is the case, do you need the
light to be fixed shining upwards or adjustable
so the you can direct the light yourself?
KEEP THE COLOUR PALETTE
SIMPLE
Two or three colours in varying shades,
together with green, will be less visually
cluttered than a jelly-bean-like explosion.
CREATE A SENSE OF ORDER
Clean lines bring an orderly feel to the
garden. A clear rectilinear design can
define spaces, while flowing organic
curves can be used to soften awkward
angles.
Image from Colin Poole
CREATE SECTIONS
This garden has three sections, all with
clear individual purposes – making
the space feel bigger because of the
multifunctional uses. The top level
features a patio, which is bathed in
morning sunshine. A central seating area
made for socialising and the bottom
deck houses a water feature. Then there’s
the homeowner’s ‘she shed’.
USE THE DIAGONAL AXIS
A typical new build garden is often wide
but shallow. Looking straight across the
back garden therefore emphasises the
shortest dimension. Alter the perspective
by turning the patio, planting beds, and
sight lines 45-degrees to line up with the
diagonal axis, creating the illusion of a
much larger space.
LOOK FOR COMPACT PLANTS
Choose plants that won’t overwhelm
the ground plane, but don’t be afraid to
include moderate sized or columnar trees
to achieve the appropriate scale.
Image from Moda
Furnishings
SOCIABLE
SEATING
Image from Dobbies
Corner sofas are a great addition to the garden,
extending the feel of living space outside. We
love options with room to lounge, but also those
with interchangeable tables which allow for
dining, making the space more versatile. Opt for
neutral colours and style with cushions so you
can freshen up the look any time.
To increase the usability of the space through
the year and into the cooler evenings, some
element of heating is wise. We love the options
from Moda Furnishings, which have either gas
fireplaces within the table, or the pure theatre
of an inset grill and corresponding ice bucket
for drinks - you need never leave the table!
Patio heaters have also come a long way in
design and functionality, , like this one from
Bridgman.
www.minervamagazines.co.uk | 25

Image from OKA
ADD SOFTNESS
The modern garden should
cry out to be sat in - it
should cosset and relax
- like an extension of the
living room. To achieve
this, it’s important to
add soft elements.
Remembering that on
the whole, gardens
are hard spaces in their
bones - but by layering
textiles, materials and
different seating options, we
can create something really
rather special.
As
well as textiles,
take care to
look at the ways your
hard landscaping interacts with
your soft landscaping - that is,
your decking, patio, walls with
your planting and lawns. Lots
of texture and softness can be
added with the careful selection
of plants and trees - you want
movement in the wind and tactile
elements.
THE LIFE AQUATIC
Adding water to the garden can be one of the best things to do for
your mental health. Here are a few things to consider:
CONSIDER THE MOOD YOU ARE TRYING TO CREATE
Water can play many roles in the garden, so it is good to be clear
about the different atmospheres you want to achieve. For instance,
a swimming pool or natural swimming pond could create a wonderful
social space in a family garden, while an ornamental water feature
could make a dramatic focal point in a smaller, urban plot.
Modern Furniture
MAKE SURE YOUR WATER FEATURE RELATES TO THE
STYLE OF THE HOUSE
Design detailing and choice of materials are an essential part of
good garden design, but they are particularly important in smaller
gardens, where water features might need to be sited close to a
property. Water features can look completely out of place if they
have no relation to the character of the house or the design of the
garden that surrounds them. Use materials to reflect the other
elements in the garden, such as paths and walls, and match the
colour and tone of the materials to that of the building so they
don’t jar and make for an uncomfortable setting.
REMEMBER THAT DIFFERENT MATERIALS CREATE
DIFFERENT SOUNDS WHEN WATER FALLS ONTO OR
RUNS OVER THEM
We all see and experience the sound of water very differently. It’s
a very personal experience and you need to explore what it is that
appeals to you about different sounds and what you might find
distracting. Metal for example, can create quite a harsh sound if
water falls onto it directly, but it will sound completely different if
water falls down it vertically.
for a few years, who themselves have been resident on the
Marlborough High Street since 1983. With the opening of our new
office at 106 High Street in Marlborough it was decided that the
McFarlane name would be used whilst still retaining the values and
ethos associated with SLCA of Marlborough.
Our new office offers a warm welcome to our past, current and
future clients in Marlborough and the surrounding villages. We
are on hand to assist you in any of your future moves or property
investments. Between us, we have a wealth of knowledge within
the property sector and are available to offer assistance and
guidance wherever required.
We have enhanced our specialist and bespoke lettings and
management service which provides all of our landlords with a
dedicated Tenancy Manager, comprehensive tenant referencing
and optional Rent Guarantee insurance. Our new Residential Sales
department also provides an equally specialist service with expert
advice from a highly knowledgeable, professional and friendly
team.
Whilst offering the highest levels of customer service you would
expect from a local independent agent, as members of The Guild
of Property Professionals we also have access to the London
market through our associated office in Park Lane.
So if you are looking to move home or wish to rent out a property
and are looking for a friendly, reliable and professional service then
please do give us a call to discuss your requirements. If you would
prefer to pop into the office for a coffee and a chat with the team,
BUILDING IN A
CONSERVATION
AREA
Just because your home
is not listed, does not
mean there might be
restrictions in place from
Conservation Area laws.
Here the HomeOwners
Alliance tell us what
we should be aware
of if planning home
improvements which may
fall outside of permitted
development...
WHAT IS A CONSERVATION
AREA?
These are designated areas of historic
and architectural interest in which there
are legal restrictions on what changes
can be made to buildings, greenery and
street furniture in order to preserve the
unique character of the place. The first
conservation areas were established in
1967 and now there are around 10,000 in
the UK including estates, parks, stretches
of canal, historic town centres and some
entire villages.
The precise restrictions on what you can
do will vary according to the rules set
by your local authority and the nature
of the area they are trying to protect.
For example in some areas the rules
might prevent changes to railings, street
lighting, trees, windows, right down to the
colour of paint that residents are allowed
to use on their front doors.
WHAT ARE THE PLANNING RE-
STRICTIONS FOR HOMES IN A
CONSERVATION AREA?
Local authorities place extra restrictions
on properties within conservation areas
known as ‘Article 4 Directions’. These
limit the changes that home owners
would otherwise be able to make to their
properties under their normal ‘permitted
development rights’. These rights govern
the home improvements that property
owners are usually allowed to make
without requiring planning permission.
If you live in a conservation area, these
automatic rights are more limited.
You should speak to your local planning
authority and look on its website in order
to find out what specific restrictions apply
to the conservation area that you live in.
However the general rules are that you
cannot, without permission, demolish:
• A building that is more than 115
cubic metres
• A gate, wall or fence that is over 1
metre if it borders the road or higher
than 2 metres if not.
You would also need permission for the
following alterations
• A single storey extensions that
extend more than 3 metres beyond
the back wall of the house or 4
metres if the house is detached
• Extensions greater than one storey
“Local authorities place extra restrictions on
properties within conservation areas known as
‘Article 4 Directions’. These limit the changes that
home owners would otherwise be able to make to
their properties under their normal ‘permitted
development rights’.”
• Side extensions
• Roof extensions or alterations
• Cladding in any material
• Any new construction of sheds,
outbuildings, swimming pools.
• The installation of chimneys, flues
or vents at the front of the house or
at the side if it faces the road
• Installing satellite dishes or
antennae that face the road.
• Fitting solar panels to the front
of the roof facing the street than
150mm from the roof slope.
• Fitting solar panels that protrude by
more than 150mm from the roof
In addition your local authority may
have imposed specific rules on the
conservation area that you live in so it
is vital to check these. Such rules could
prevent you from:
• Replacing original windows or
doors
• Altering the guttering or pipes
• Felling trees or shrubs
• Painting the facade or changing the
colour of window frames and doors
WHERE CAN I GET ADVICE
ON CARRYING OUT BUILDING
WORK WITHOUT BREAKING
THE RULES?
Speak to your local planning authority at
an early stage and talk through your plans
to find out if they are likely to require
planning permission. If you do need to
apply for permission, you could get your
builder, architect or a planning consultant
to submit an application on your behalf.
The Timber Windows
Listed Buildings Range
For properties within a conservation
area or for those with a Listed status,
when it comes to replacing windows
and doors, this is not always a straight
forward process...
Through consultation with planning specialists and authorities
across the country, combined with their experience in providing
joinery solutions for conservation areas, the experts at Timber
Windows have formed a dedicated product range to bridge
the gap in what is required for a listed structure and ease the
frustrations of historic homeowners.
From experience, owners of properties designated a listed status
are proud to be the custodians of these historic structures,
entrusted with their preservation. They are often balancing this
with the desire to live contentedly, and many will recognise the
difficulty surrounding making improvements to their properties,
finding the right materials and products to match those of the
period, whilst complying with local authority rules.
The Timber Windows Listed collection of beautiful timber sash
windows, casement windows and doors has already proven to
be just the ticket for homeowners and planning officers alike.
Putty glazing, true bars and individual glass panes are all
important aspects incorporated into the range; the use of
factory painted, engineered timber eliminates warping, twisting
and sticking previously associated with wood, meaning your
home gets the correct appearance of timber, with none of the
downsides of the past.
The forward-thinking Timber Windows system makes the
process of filling in application forms much easier for the
homeowner and much simpler for planning officers to consider,
owing to the computerised drawings and specifications. Many
happy customers have commended the comprehensive and
informative nature of the paperwork that has been tailored to
their homes and enabled them to complete council forms with
ease.
With 5 specialist showrooms in Cheltenham, Cirencester,
Henley-on-Thames, Moreton-in-Marsh and Oxford, the Timber
Windows team are on hand to assist you in choosing the most
appropriate windows and doors for your home. Their expertise
and experience will help you make the best decision for your
property in a completely unbiased way.
Doing our bit for
the Environment
Whether you’re undertaking a
complete renovation of a period
home or thinking of purchasing a
new home, the heating you choose
will be one of your important
considerations...
At the beginning of December 2020, the UK Climate Change
Committee published its latest report on which steps the UK
must take to achieve its net zero decarbonisation target. The
report contained ideas that, if adopted by the Government, will
transform the way we consider how we heat our homes. For
example, it would end the installation of fossil fuel heating – gas
by 2033 and oil by no later than 2028.
This may seem a long way off for many of us but if our current
heating system needs renewing or replacing now or in the not
too distant future, then it may be worth looking at alternatives to
what you are currently using.
There are, in reality, two possible options; to either electrify your
home and replace your oil fuelled boiler with an electric heat
pump, or decarbonise your gas boiler with a low or zero-carbon
alternative such as hydrogen.
Norman Bedford of Plum-IT Services is encouraged to see a
large increase of customers interested in finding out about these
new technologies and as an MCS certified installer, can advise
and assist customers in applying for the Government funded
Renewal Heat Incentive. His company also works closely with
renowned Gas boiler manufacturer, Worcester Bosch, and can
provide information on the new conversions to hydrogen boilers.
Are you getting a good night’s sleep?
Sleep is so important to general
health and wellbeing, so we got
some great tips from Andrew Peace
at Elite Beds and Mattresses to
guide us gently to the land of nod!
Achieving a good night’s sleep is a
problem for an awful lot of people, here
are our top six ways to help you drift off.
1. Invest in your sleep with a comfortable,
supportive bed. What you sleep on plays
a huge part in how well you doze. A bed
with the correct support, comfort and
space will ensure you wake less, move
about less, aren’t disturbed by your
partner as much and are less likely to
wake up feeling tired or aching. Remember,
if you’re not comfortable in bed
your sleep won’t be as deep.
2. Avoid clock watching. Instead of staring
at the clock and stressing over how many
lost hours of sleep you’ve had, hide the
bedside clock or cover it with something.
Checking the time only increases stress.
3. Don’t focus on how much sleep you’re
getting. There’s no ideal quota and one
size doesn’t t all! Instead look at how
you feel the next day. Too many people
focus on sleep quantity, but what’s important
is that the sleep you do get is of good
quality so make sure you regularly assess
that and your comfort levels.
4. Write a todo list before bed. Worry
and anxiety are a key player in what
keeps us awake at night. Often, we get
into bed with our mind racing or buzzing
with the things that are troubling us or
what we need to get done. Keep a notepad
and pen by your bed and write down
worries or jobs that need to be tackled. It
really does help to clear the mind for sleep.
5. Watch your diet. Avoid overeating
before bedtime. Choose foods with
sleeppromoting chemicals such as
chicken and turkey, pumpkin & sunower
seeds, peanuts, beans and milk. Equally,
limit stimulants such as alcohol & caffeine
which reduce sleep quality & prevents
you feeling rested.
6. Establish a bedtime routine. Our
bodies thrive on routine so establish and
prioritise a bedtime routine and, where
possible, stick to it. This could be something
as simple as putting PJ’s on, washing your
face and brushing your teeth. A bed time
routine signals the brain that it’s time for
sleep.
Like proper nutrition and exercise, sleep
fulls a vital role in keeping us healthy
and happy. We need a good night’s sleep
to ensure we’re feeling t, thinking
sharply and generally to give us the appetite
and enthusiasm to make the most of
everyday living.
are still in National
Lockdown, Elite
VW ID.3
All Electric
Motoring Journalist Sue Cooke test
drives the new electrifying VW ID.3...
At last, a fully electric car with a decent
mileage range hits dealership forecourts.
Range anxiety does exist. I have
experienced it. But not this week. I am
road testing the new VW ID.3, a family
hatchback which after a full charge will
take you 260 miles.
And the ID.3 has just won a tenth award,
gaining best small hatch title at the UK
Car of the Year awards 2021. Design,
space and practicality is Volkswagen’s
goal to bring e-mobility to the man in the
street who wants a car that is easy to use
and affordable.
The high roof makes the cabin easily
accessible and very comfortable. A
splash of colour across the front dash
and door trim are a welcoming touch.
The large screen central dash is simple
to use at a touch. Details of the speed
you are achieving are in large white
letters on the screen behind the steering
wheel. If you have driven a VW, then the
instruments and displays will be very
familiar.
I admit to being slightly envious when I
see some of the fantastic technology on
new cars and wish I could afford one.
Buyers of the new ID.3 have the luxury
of having the same software level as new
cars throughout the entire life cycle of
the car. Every three months the ID.3 will
receive over the air updates which VW
says will optimise software performance
and may also include new functions and
customisation options. There is already
a long list of technical specifications and
safety features.
As there is so much window space,
including just in front of the A frame,
visibility all round is fantastic. I was
surprised at how much power and
torque is available as 62mph from flat is
achieved in 7.3 seconds. There is a one
speed gearbox.
Charging to 80% capacity using a 100kW
charger takes just 35 minutes, plenty
of time for a quick shop and it means
I can easily make the 60 miles trip to
my favourite designer outlet without
worrying if I will get there and back. The
huge benefit of driving an all electric car,
once I get to the always very busy car
park is that I can go straight to the area
nearest to the shops where there are lots
of free charging spaces, usually empty!
Or you can charge from a home wall box
overnight. A 100% charge at home will
cost about £9.
Further additions to the ID.3 family will
arrive during 2021, with additional battery
and specification variants, bolstering
one of the model’s key strengths and the
reasons for its success. These include
the smallest Pure model with a 45 kWh
battery.
The latest figures from the Society of
Motor Manufacturers and Traders show
that the demand for battery electric
vehicles (BEVs) grew by 185.9% to
108,205 units in 2020. That’s against
the figures for the Covid year when
the UK new car market fell by almost a
third (-29.4%), with annual registrations
dropping to 1,631,064 units.
Manufacturers are bringing record
numbers of electrified vehicles to
market over the coming months and
Volkswagen is leading the way with the
ID.3 hatchback. If you prefer an SUV;
Volkswagen’s first fully-electric SUV,
the ID.4 is available to order by UK
customers in First Edition trim now, with
deliveries to customers commencing
imminently.
The future of driving in the UK is definitely
electrifying!
CARE HEROES
Over the past year we have
heard many stories of carers
and people who work in the care
sector going the extra mile to
ensure the health and wellbeing
of those that they care for.
Here are a few local stories as a
thank you to our Care Heroes...
1st Choice Stairlifts
Audley Care
As a team, we have felt honoured to
be a part of helping our customers feel
safe and comfortable during what has
been a testing period. This past year has
been a rather unique time for everyone.
It has surprised us, challenged us, and
shown us the importance of feeling safe
and secure at home. It has also shed
important light on the growing number
of people requiring care and having
someone to rely on.
At Audley Care, providing this service, no
matter the circumstance, is vital to us,
and we are so proud we get to do what
we do every day. With the nationwide
closure of venues and facilities, our team
has maintained a sense of community
through meal deliveries, food shops,
virtual classes and social activities for
owners living at Audley Villages. And for
community customers, the Audley Care
team ensured that they felt as cared
for and supported. From helping with
daily walks, doctor’s appointments to
ensuring customers were getting out
for fresh air regularly. Going above and
beyond includes garden maintenance,
personal grooming services and assisting
with a pet adoption to name a few. We
pride ourselves on being able to provide
bespoke levels of support to meet
individual needs.
Calne firm 1st Choice Stairlifts has
continued to be an essential service
throughout the Covid-19 pandemic
installing and maintaining lifts. We have
been given Keyworker status throughout
so that we can carry on with the job we
love to keep people safe in their own
homes with the help of a stairlift or home
lift. All the staff members have shone
brightly in what has been a year like no
other. Having had no experience of a
pandemic before, our staff members
quickly adapted their routines whilst
working in customer’s homes or with
customers coming to our showroom.
Keeping our customers and staff safe
has been our number one priority and
we have been complimented many
times on how reassured our customers
were with having us in their homes. Our
surveyors and engineers continue to go
the extra mile to ensure our customers
are comfortable with us working in their
homes in a Covid safe way using PPE,
social distancing, and extra sanitisation
measures. All of this in a year where
we have experienced an increase in
customers - people wanting to stay in
their own homes and live independently
rather than go into a care home. We are
so proud of our amazing team who have
continued delivering a 5* service to our
customers throughout.
Merits of the
home visit
ADVERTISING FEATURE
By Michael Hodge of
Lansdowne Legal...
I received a call from a divorced pensioner, who explained that
he had telephoned several lawyer’s firms about making a will.
Some said he could have an appointment in three months’ time
and others wanted him to fill in a form. My work covers subjects
that can cause clients anxiety that can include matrimonial
proceedings, boundary disputes, the drafting of wills and powers
of attorney and if a client really wants a sleepless night the legal
work involved in moving house.
If you want your client’s worries and concerns laid bare there
is no substitute for a face to face meeting albeit at a distance
armed with a mask but better without when you can see the
grimace on the face of a listener to your proposed plan of action.
If it is a will, many people worry about whether or not their
children will miss out if their surviving spouse remarries or if there
will be enough left over after payment of care fees. An innocent
old lady may wish to pass on her house to her daughter because
the responsibility of ownership is too great or to avoid troubling
the government probate authorities. She needs to be warned
that however innocent her motives the Wilts Council may come
calling to tell her that she has deliberately deprived herself of
assets to avoid care fees (you can take it from me that they do
not give people the benefit of the doubt). This is the point when
you need to call everyone into the room to find a solution which
might mean looking at potential borrowing power. There are other
potential restrictions of choice, as challenging wills has for some
become a lucrative pastime because some may be classed as
dependants. You do not want trouble at your funeral (this year
I have had potential beneficiaries challenging wills even before
the testator has died). I give advice. If my client fails to take that
advice, I feel a sense of failure. However, it does not always pay
to be right.
Top tips to step back to normality
Dr Hilary Jones provides useful tips regarding moving forward during the pandemic
Many of us have spent the past year in the
comfort of our own homes, establishing
a work routine from our bedrooms or
living rooms, adapting exercise and diet
regimes, and finding alternative ways to
communicate with friends and family.
Lockdown created a welcome slow-down
for many people, allowing us to reflect on
our fast-paced lives and spend more time
looking after ourselves. As restrictions
gradually ease and more freedoms are
granted, it may lead you to feel conflicting
emotions, so to help during this confusing
time, I have provided my top tips to step
back into normality, including:
Go at your own pace
Take time for yourself
Reconnect with loved ones
Get enough sleep
Put your health first and get regular check
ups
Although friends and family may be
excited for their COVID bubbles to burst
as measures begin to loosen, it is normal if
you feel overwhelmed and anxious at the
thought of slowly returning back to your
hectic pre-COVID life.
My top tip
Try to take each step at a time - you don’t
have to jump straight back into your old
routine. If going on a walk is enough for
one day, stick with it, but try to build on
this every day. Perhaps meet up with
a friend or grab a coffee from the local
shop - stepping out of your comfort zone,
gradually and responsibly, can help reestablish
a routine that works for you.
Take time for yourself
As we adjust to yet another big change,
it’s more important than ever to look after
48 | www.minervamagazines.co.uk
ourselves and take note of how we are
feeling. You may think you have taken too
much time for yourself over the last year,
however, as life picks up its pace again,
it is likely you will crave more me-time,
so be conscious to allow yourself these
moments.
My top tip
Think about an activity that is just for
you – for example reading a book before
bed, taking a bath, or watching a movie.
Practising mindfulness by taking 5 minutes
every day to focus on your breath is an
exercise that can help you feel relaxed,
ease anxiety and enable you to focus on
the present, giving yourself the time that
you need.
Reconnect with loved ones
Communicating with others can help keep
our spirits up, lessen feelings of isolation
and anxiety, and make new memories.
The pandemic has made it difficult for
the majority of us to connect with friends
and family, with most interaction having
taken place at a social distance or behind
a screen, so it is an exciting feeling being
able to reunite with those close to you once
more.
My top tip
As you begin to reconnect with your loved
ones, be attentive to any changes in their
health - you are much more likely to notice
any changes than they are, especially if
you haven’t seen them for a while. Have
you noticed your family member or friend
having difficulty following the conversation,
for example? Then suggest they get their
hearing tested - Hidden Hearing’s 5-minute
online hearing test – available at www.
campaignforbetterhearing.co.uk can
provide an immediate insight into how well
they are hearing.
Thanks to the support of The National
Campaign for Better Hearing, you or your
loved one could be nominated to receive a
top of the range hearing aid.
Get enough sleep
You will probably find your sleeping pattern
change as our day-to-day activities get
busier. Going back to work, doing more
exercise and socialising will have a bigger
impact on our energy levels than we might
think, so getting enough rest is key.
My top tip
Try to stick to a regular sleeping routine,
going to sleep and waking up at a similar
time each day, and aim for at least eight
hours sleep a night. If you struggle to get
some shut eye, reduce screen time, avoid
caffeine before bed and exercise regularly.
Put your health first by having
regular check ups
Your health may have taken a backseat
during the pandemic, and you may not
have had your regular health checks, such
as going to the dentist or getting your
eyesight and hearing tested. However,
it is important to take the initiative and
book these appointments so that you can
fully enjoy life’s magical moments postlockdown.
My top tip
As restrictions ease and summer comes
along, you want to be able to absorb your
senses to feel connected to the world
around you once more – including hearing
the birds outside, people watching in the
bustling streets, and ordering that long
awaited drink at your local pub. Prioritise
your hearing health by booking a free
hearing test at your local Hidden Hearing
centre - call 0800 037 2060 or visit www.
Kathryn Smith Cowap, a Partner in the Private Client team at Wansbroughs
Solicitors considers the care that needs to be taken by attorneys.
It is said that ignorance is bliss but, for attorneys acting under
an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) or a Lasting Power of
Attorney (LPA), ignorance of their legal responsibilities may be
anything but blissful.
The relationship between attorneys and the person who
appointed them (their donor) is fiduciary. This means that
attorneys must always act in good faith, with honesty and
integrity. Attorneys must not allow themselves to be put in a
position where the duties they owe to their donor conflict (or may
conflict) with their own personal interests. Failure to do so may
result in attorneys being held personally liable to their donor.
Attorneys are governed by the Mental Capacity Act 2005
and should follow the principles set out in section 1 of the
Act including that any act done, or decision made, for or on
behalf of their donor must be done, or made, in the donor’s
best interests. There is also a detailed Code of Practice
accompanying the Act which anyone agreeing to accept the role
of attorney is strongly advised to familiarise themselves with to
ensure that they understand their role and responsibilities.
