EDITOR'S
ASSOC. PROF. HAYATI AYGUN
We are pleased to meet you w th the f rst ssue
of Un lateral B portal Endoscop c Sp ne
Surgery Journal. It s exc t ng to watch the
b rth of a magaz ne, to see t develop and
mature, to come together w th the joy of
shar ng new deas, new nsp rat on and
sc ent f c knowledge. As a result of the
s gn f cant progress n the academ c
commun ty and technology deal ng w th
sp nal surgery research, many nat onal and
nternat onal journals have been publ shed.
The Journal of Un lateral B portal Endoscop c
Sp ne Surgery a ms to serve a w de aud ence
n the f eld of sp nal surgery at nat onal and
nternat onal level and to prov de an
env ronment for the rap d transm ss on of
developments and new nformat on n th s
f eld.
Th s f rst ssue s the product of a new
and strong team work ng together, and
we bel eve each number after that w ll
be better than the prev ous one. Our
goal s to reach out to pat ents and
endoscop c sp ne surgeons all over the
world, and to follow and share new
developments. In add t on, t s to
promote the valuable researchers and
doctors who have devoted themselves
to endoscop c sp ne surgery. We nv te
all sp ne surgery profess onals around
the world to contr bute to the journal.

Un lateral B portal Endoscop c sp ne surgery overcomes
the l m tat on of central canal stenos s, lateral canal
stenos s and foram nal stenos s due to a w de range of
access angles result ng n effect ve c rcumferent al and
focal decompress on of the sp nal canal w thout

th s approach through the spat um ntermuscular and
preserves the med al branch of the dorsal ramus

approach allows for access ng the foramen both from
the contralateral s de poster orly and the extra
foram nal s de (parasp nal extraforam nal approach)
just g v ng flex b l ty to treat ng all types of stenos s. UBE

Endoscop c surgery s a surg cal
procedure performed by dr ll ng a
small hole and us ng advanced mag ng
systems to treat d sease occurr ng
anywhere n the body. Dur ng th s
surg cal procedure, the pat ent area s
moved to the screen w th the mage
systems and the v sual f eld s enlarged
by us ng advanced lens systems. The
ment oned surg cal procedure s also
known as "closed surgery" among the
publ c. Among the operat ons
performed us ng the endoscop c
method, endoscop c sp ne operat ons
are also ncluded.
Endoscop c ntervent on; It s also used
n stomach, gall bladder, gynecology,
ENT and urology surger es.

In the operat ons performed w th the endoscop c method, the surg cal open ngs are
small, allow ng the opportun ty to ntervene by enlarg ng the t ssue.
Endoscop c foram nal approach w ll cause less anatom cal damage espec ally n
hern as that occur n or out of the groove called "foramen" where the nerve leaves
the sp nal canal. For th s reason, t s a method that should be preferred pr mar ly.
In add t on to these, endoscop c sp ne surger es are an advantageous method n the
treatment of d seases of the back sp ne. Because, n class cal methods, the pat ent
suffers ser ous pa n dur ng the cutt ng of the chest. Aga n, no matter how small
aperture s tr ed to be opened w th these methods, the pat ent w ll st ll suffer from
pa n. However, n the endoscop c method, two to four holes are dr lled nto the chest
of the pat ent n the lateral pos t on, depend ng on the necess ty of the ntervent on.
The surg cal procedure s performed by look ng at the screen through the channels
placed through these holes.

UBE
The rate of complications after
endoscopic spine surgeries is low.
Although the recurrence rate is the
same with other methods, the risk of
complications is less in the new
surgery. For this reason, even if
recurrence occurs in endoscopic
surgeries, the risk of complications
of the second operation is almost
negligible.
In addition, the endoscopic method
can be used safely in patients with
recurrence after open surgery or
microsurgery.
In the COVID-19
process, sp nal
endoscopy has become
our most rel able
weapon for s tuat ons
that requ re emergency
surgery.

The COVID-19 pandem c has s gn f cantly

Outpat ent care has gradually sh fted from

w th the sp ne, where pa n and dysfunct on

In the case of COVID-19, sp nal endoscopy has become
our most rel able weapon for emergency surg cal

YOUR SPINE HEALTHY
KEEPING
COVID-19
DURING
Dur ng the coronav rus d sease 2019
(COVID-19) pandem c, wh ch has affected
the whole world s nce December 2019,
some measures have been taken to reduce
the mpact of the v rus on the populat on:
Quarant ne soc al l fe, move work and
educat on order to the home env ronment,
certa n restr ct ons and regulat ons can be
l sted as.
Accord ngly, many factors such as spend ng
a long t me at home, sedentary l fe,
prov d ng commun cat on w th
technolog cal tools, and the stress created
by econom c and soc olog cal negat v t es
started to threaten sp ne health.
The act of nact v ty started to become
chron c and when evaluated from an
orthoped c po nt of v ew, th s process
brought along many compla nts such as
ncreased back and back pa n, neck pa n,
posture d sorders and jo nt pa n n our
pat ents.
OUR SPINE

WE
SUGGEST
SOME BASIC
ROUTINES
TO
PROTECT
OUR SPINE
HEALTH
1 2
EXERCISE AND
WALKING ARE VERY
IMPORTANT
To protect sp ne health dur ng the
pandem c, Dr. Hayat Aygun recommends
that pat ents make var ous phys cal
act v t es such as walk ng, exerc se and
stretch ng movements a part of the r l ves
for at least half an hour a day, regardless of
the r age. Thanks to these exerc ses, t s
a med to take precaut ons aga nst poss ble
back and back pa n caused by nutr t onal
d sorders, loss of muscle strength and
atrophy (melt ng) due to blood supply
d sorder that may occur n the muscles. The
best way to ma nta n sp nal health s to
stretch often and keep your core strong. In
add t on, although phys cal therapy serv ce
s l m ted n th s process that can be done
n the near env ronment, many exerc ses
such as p lates, card o or yoga that can be
accessed from the nternet are benef c al n
protect ng the sp ne health.

WORK AREAS SHOULD BE
ERGONOMIC
Whether the seat or work cha r we s t n s ergonom c; We should
pay attent on that t reaches at least to the shoulder blades, there
s no gap n the wa st arch and t s sl ghtly ncl ned back. We must
take care to s t so that there s no wa st gap. If a lumbar gap s
formed, support ng th s space w th a small p llow w ll prevent
sp nal muscular pa n or back pa n. Too low cha rs are on the
knees; S nce h gh cha rs can cause pa n related to the sp ne, th s
balance w ll deally be ach eved by the feet touch ng the floor flat,
deally when both hands are placed under the legs.
When us ng dev ces such as
phones or tablets, the neck area
should not be stra ned too much,
should not be bent forward and
should be prov ded w th support
from the arm and elbow areas as
close to eye level as poss ble.
1 4
Attention to
Lengthen ng of stay at home dur ng
the pandem c process; It caused
we ght ga n due to ncreased
anx ety and comfort at the same
t me. The ncreas ng we ght gets
out of control over t me and
endangers the health of the sp ne.
As a result of nact v ty the
metabol c ratedecreases
due to muscle decreases
and the decrease n da ly
calor e expend ture, th s
makes t eas er to ga n
we ght.For th s reason,
avo d ng raf ned
(packaged) foods, wh ch
conta n h gh amounts of
foods such as flour, sugar,
salt and o l, as much as
poss ble;
the nutrition!
We must take care to consume
unprocessed healty
carbohydrates, prote ns and
fats such as vegetables, fru ts,
nuts, cereal foods, meat,
ch cken and f sh. For sp ne
health, we should consume 2-3
l ters of water a day. 60% of our
body cons sts of water.
Low water consumpt on
or prolonged th rst
weakens the structure of
the muscles and d scs,
makes them vulnerable to
damage and causes slow
recovery.
