Herzegovina regionThe Bosnian California with Mostar51 BACK TO THE ROOTSHerzegovina truly is rock country, with the potentialfor a few new Leonidios! Mostar’s reggae band Zosterpainted Herzegovina in one of their songs as theBosnian California: A mediterranean climate with tropicalsummers, plantations of grapes, tangerines, wild figs andpomegranates, extensive rocky landscapes, and a relaxedsouthern vibe. This is particularly true of the southernNeretva valley around Mostar. Northern Herzegovinaaround Konjic has a lush mountain jungle and Bosniaslargest mountains ranges (Visočica, Čvrsnica, Prenj andVelež), all with a long mountaineering tradition.Mostar (105,000 inhabitants) is the cultural heart ofthe region and is best known for its historic 23 m highbridge from the 16 th century, which was for a long timethe national symbol of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today’spost-war Mostar has a Croatian and a Bosniak (Muslim)character with a well-preserved, beautiful medieval oldtown from the Ottoman period. There are lots of goodrestaurants, cafés, a few pubs and a wide range ofaccommodation that makes it a good base to explorethe surrounding areas. Climbing club ASPK Neretva has agreat bouldering gym on the university campus for rainydays. Although you’d have to be really out of luck sinceMostar is the sunniest place in all of Ex-Yugoslavia.Mostar
