Independent Study
One of the chief benefits of Washington
College’s intimate setting is the successful
growth of its independent study program.
Faculty are happy to assist students interested
in pursuing a course of study not offered
within the standard curriculum. One
student recently earned academic credit
for independent studies in logic, existentialism,
and ancient literature. He worked
with several faculty members to formulate
a reading list, then met regularly with each
to discuss the readings and present papers.
Credit-bearing independent studies are
assigned the department number of either
498 or 499. The number appears on the
student’s transcript, as well as the designation
“Independent Study” and the
specific topic studied. An example would
be “Philosophy 498. Independent Study:
Problems in Mythology.”
Some students opt to pursue independent,
non-credit work, with the permission and
under the direction of the major department.
Such studies are usually undertaken
as a vehicle for honors work in the senior
obligation. Successful completion of a
non-credit independent study project is
acknowledged on the student’s permanent
record.
