D740 Sharon; The Decision; Enough is Enough (DVD, 30 minutes)
19
INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE
Sharon: Once an intelligent and sociable student, since joining high school Sharon has
become a big headache for her parents. She has started skipping classes, not coming
home on time, and is disrespectful of her mother and father. Her parents are bewildered
by this change and don't know what to do. But when the reason for Sharon's behaviour is
revealed their first response is shock and denial. With help, they are able to accept reality
and can begin the healing process.
The Decision: Manjit, a victim of family violence, is afraid that telling anybody about her
abuse will destroy her family and ruin her children's future. Will her silence provide a
secure future for her family and children, or will she decide to break the silence to protect
herself and her children? The decision is Manjit's.
Enough is Enough: Gian Kaur and Bhagwan Singh had a dream that they would spend
the last years of their lives in happiness and peace with their son. However, when their
treatment at the hands of their greedy, selfish son and daughter-in-law becomes
unbearable, they are forced to say enough is enough. (Vancouver Multicultural Family
Support Services Society) (HQ 809.3 C2 S52 2006)
20
INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE
This dramatized video addresses the issue of wife battering in a Sikh home. It features a
drama by a Vancouver theatre group that performs in Punjabi. In the play, the wife seeks
help from the extended family. Cultural and religious issues are directly related to the
attitudinal problems encountered as two Sikh women try to make their family aware that
silence and denial are not effective means for addressing family violence and that legal
recourse is available. The play is followed by comments from B.C. Supreme Court
Justice and various service providers who deal with family violence in the community.
POLICE RESPONSE - DVDs
D1417 Domestic Disputes (DVD, 15 minutes)
Responding to calls of domestic violence is often the cause of assault and death among
law enforcement officers. This program is the result of a ten year study on officers who
were killed while dealing with a domestic dispute situation. Actual cases are dramatized,
showing how the officers were killed and the future officers should be prepared for when
handling disputes. Emphasis is made on the first minute of response being the most
crucial to an officer’s safety. Other topics include: approaching the scene, indications of
danger, patience when establishing control, alcohol and drugs, and exercising correct
handcuffing procedures. (AIMS Multimedia) (HV 8079.2 D644 1992)

D1414 Domestic Violence Response (DVD, 26 minutes)
30
INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE
All law enforcement officers must be aware when responding to a domestic violence call
they are entering what can be an extremely volatile situation. A disturbance can escalate
from arguing to violence in seconds, and officers must be able to keep the peace,
separate combatants, and be concerned about their own safety. The subjects know
where all the potential weapons are, particularly in the kitchen -- a room loaded with
utensils that can be used to deadly effect. The complaining party even may turn against
officers when the abusive spouse is about to be taken away. No wonder a domestic
violence situation is one of the most feared officer survival calls. This program features
realistic reenactments highlighting the most crucial training points, as well as commentary
from several training experts. (Distribution Access) (HV 6626.2 D65 2003)
