HISTORY & KOKKOKAI
HISTORY
Two merchant navy engineers wanted to offer the world a
product made in Japan. The idea of creating pens from drawing
pens came from Mr. Namiki during his teaching career. He
observed that the English nibs had iridium tips, a very resistant
metal of the platinum family that he finally found at HOKKAIDO.

HISTORY
1925
Inauguration of the artisans’ group "Kokkokai" in Japan
Centered around Gonroku Matsuda, who later became a living
national treasure, this school was formed in order to research,
develop and improve the quality of Maki-e fountain pens. The
name was derived from a quote by Ryosuke Namiki the founder,
"ln the way Sumo is Japan's national sport, Maki-e is the nation's
light".
THE KNOW-HOW
THE KNOW-HOW
Maki-e
Ultimate decorative beauty
The Maki-e fountain pens using the traditional lacquer work of "Maki-e".
The fine designs by the craftsmen are indeed the crystals of Japanese
beauty.
Urushi
Popular in Japan since the Stone Age, Namiki uses the highest quality
of lacquer: Urushi. lt is produced by male lacquer trees "Rhus
Vernicifera" whose trunks are notched when they reach 10 years of age.
The harvest, which rarely exceeds 3 or 4 tea spoons per tree, lasts only a
few days in a year.
The complexity of this process explains the rarity and the high value.
Nib
At Namiki, we produce all the components of our pens, here in our
factories : from the body to the nib, including the ink.
We strongly believe in placing value on writing touch and quality, which
guarantees our knowledge.
PROCESS
Namiki Maki-e fountain pens are created using
various types of advanced techniques.
Several layers of lacquers are required for deep colors
and shadows.
By repeating this elaborate process, the beauty of
Maki-e is revealed.
Lacquering Drawing Sprinkling Polishing
The undercoat of Maki-e
fountain pens is black
lacquer.
Motifs are drawn thanks
to several types of
brushes on the lacquer
undercoat.
Powdered gold is sprinkled
onto the lacquer. A fine
bamboo tool called
"Funzutsu" is used in this
process.
After lacquer has been
applied to the whole pen, it
is rubbed off with charcoal
until the pattern appears on
the surface.
Maki-e TECHNIQUES
Togidashi-Hira Maki-e Hira Maki-e Raden
Rankaku Hyoumon Chinkin
Shishiai Togidashi Maki-e
(Combined Raised and Burnished Maki-e)
Shishiai Togidashi Maki-e is the intricate combination of Taka and Togidashi
Maki-e, the highest-level of Maki-e, requiring very advanced techniques.
Urushi lacquer and charcoal powder are used to bring up the main design in
high relief. Then, raised elements are smoothed and burnished for a uniform
lustre.
Togidashi-Taka Maki-e
(Burnished-Raised Maki-e)
On completion of background and other elements of the scene using
Togidashi Maki-e techniques, greater emphasis is provided to the main design
with other materials such as lacquer and charcoal powder. The result is an
impression of stately opulence.
Togidashi Maki-e
(Burnished Maki-e)
Hira Maki-e technique is used to create the main design. Then, the body is
completely covered with Urushi lacquer, and after drying, the design is
revealed by burnishing the lacquer with charcoal.
Togidashi-Hira Maki-e
(Burnished-Flat Maki-e)
After finishing the background and other scene features by Togidashi Maki-e,
then the main design is created using Hira Maki-e technique.
Hira Maki-e
(Flat Maki-e)
The lacquered main design is decorated with sprinkled gold and silver
powders. Additional layers of lacquer are applied. After this stage, the lacquer
is hardened and burnished.
Raden
(Mother-of-Pearl)
The inside surface stratum of various shells. Cut into small pieces, they are
coated with Urushi lacquer to secure them in place and then, burnished to
create a perfect finish.
Rankaku
(Egg Shell)
The design is created using small pieces or powder of quail shells. Bonded to
the lacquer and coated with Urushi, the surface is burnished to reveal the
design.
Hyoumon
Various precious metal sheets such as gold or silver are inserted and fixed to
the pattern thanks to Urushi lacquer. The surface is then browned with
charcoal to reveal the decoration of the pen.
Chinkin
(Gold Inlay)
The Chinkin technique consists of covering the pen with Urushi lacquer and
engraving patterns with special scissors and a precious metal sheet. A gold
powder is then encrusted in the engraving.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF LACQUERED &
MAKI-E OBJECTS
Characteristics of lacquer and Maki-é objects
The lacquer is sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun and electric lighting. It can
lose its brilliance.
Protection against UV rays
Lacquer objects must be protected from sunlight and lamps with filters and UV
protection. In shops, you must use LED lights and move these objects regularly.
Maintaining the humidity
We recommend that you keep a small bowl with water near the lacquer objects on
display to maintain an ideal humidity rate at 60 to 70%.
Care
Gently wipe the lacquer object with a soft and dry fabric, such as cotton. For more
stubborn stains (ink) or marks, wipe immediately. Never use cleaning chemicals and
avoid contact with acid.
Manipulation
These objects can easily slide from your hands, if you wear cotton gloves to handle
them, it is better. Also pay attention if you wear rings, they could scratch the surface of
the lacquer. We recommend presenting these objects on a surface covered with fabric
or leather. Before placing the object back in its display, wipe it with a dry and soft cloth
to remove any fingerprints.
