EDWARD POLOCHICK, MUSIC DIRECTOR
Edward Polochick, Music Director of Lincoln's
Symphony Orchestra since 1998, has expanded
LSO’s music series through innovative classical
music programs, family concerts, pops concerts,
and July 4th events like the Uncle Sam Jam.
For 31 years, he served as Artistic Director of
Concert Artists of Baltimore, an all-professional
chamber orchestra and vocal ensemble of eighty
musicians which he founded in 1987. Maestro
Polochick served on the faculty of the Peabody
Conservatory of Music in Baltimore from 1979
to 2020 in a multitude of conducting positions
including Associate Conductor of Orchestras,
Director of Choral Ensembles, and Opera
Conductor. Not only is he widely recognized as
a conductor, but is an award-winning pianist
and harpsichordist and regularly conducts from
the keyboard with Concert Artists, the Baltimore
Symphony Orchestra, and Lincoln’s Symphony
Orchestra. He has also appeared as piano soloist
with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Los
Angeles Chamber Orchestra under the direction of
Sir Neville Marriner.
Since winning the first Leopold Stokowski
Conducting Award in 1978 and, as a result,
conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra, he
continues to attract world-wide attention as
an orchestral, choral, and operatic conductor.
In addition to conducting the Philadelphia and
Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, his guest
appearances include the Houston Symphony,
Chautauqua Symphony, the Opera Company
of Philadelphia, Omaha Symphony, Jacksonville
Symphony, Charleston (SC) Symphony
Orchestra, Aalborg Symphony (Denmark),
Daejeon Philharmonic (South Korea), St.

From 1979-1999, Mr. Polochick was on the
conducting staff of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra as Director of the Symphony Chorus,
founder and director of the Baltimore Symphony
Chorus Chamber Singers, and frequent guest
conductor. During his tenure with the BSO, he
established annual Holiday Pops and Messiah
performances which have remained Baltimore
holiday traditions for nearly three decades. In the
summer of 1987, Mr. Polochick was conductor
of the Musicisti Americani Summer Festival
in Sulmona, Italy. In the autumn of that same
year, he conducted the Peabody Symphony
Orchestra in Moscow, the first appearance of
an American student orchestra in the Soviet
Union. In recognition of the Moscow tour,
Mr. Polochick received an ASCAP Award for
Adventurous Programming of American Music.
In 2000, Mr. Polochick received the Peggy and
Yale Gordon Achievement Award and was made
an honorary member of the Baltimore Music Club.
Two years later, he was awarded the coveted
Johns Hopkins University Distinguished Alumnus
Award. In 2004, he was named Baldwin Scholar at
the University of Notre Dame of Maryland where
he held lectures, demonstrations, and panels on
the creative act of music. He was awarded the
‘Keys to the City’ by Lincoln’s Mayor Coleen Seng
in 2007, and in 2010 received a commission
from Nebraska Governor David Heineman as an
Admiral in the Nebraska Navy. In 2011, he was
the only American to serve as an adjudicator for
the Rosa Ponselle International Vocal Competition
in Caiazzo, Italy.
Mr. Polochick is frequently asked to share his
knowledge and love of music at various lecture
series, adjudications, and radio broadcasts. Each
year renowned broadcaster, Marc Steiner, invites
him to co-host his radio program in Baltimore,
celebrating music of the holiday season. He is
also a regular panelist on Face the Music, a radio
review program of recordings hosted by Jonathan
Palevsky of WBJC-FM, Baltimore. For nearly two
decades, he and Mr. Palevsky have been cohosting
WBJC’s annual Christmas Program.
Although Mr. Polochick resides in Baltimore, he
considers Lincoln to be his second home. On each
visit he contributes to the community through
LSO’s public performances, school visits,
workshops, master classes, and other educational
activities, making classical music accessible to
everyone in Lincoln.

ANTON MILLER, VIOLIN
Since giving his Carnegie Hall concerto debut,
American violinist Anton Miller has appeared
throughout the United States and abroad as
a soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, and
pedagogue.
Mr. Miller has performed over fifty violin
concertos with a number of orchestras on four
continents. His world premiere performance
of Xiogang Ye’s Last Paradise for violin and
orchestra in Beijing, China with the Central
Philharmonic Orchestra was recorded for
broadcast throughout Asia and released on
CD. Mr. Miller has also been concertmaster for
a number of orchestras, including over thirty
years with Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra and
the New Jersey Festival Orchestra. He was
also concertmaster for an Argentinian tour of
the American Ballet Theatre.
Mr. Miller has made a number of recital
and chamber music tours to Europe
with performances in Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, Spain, Greece, and England.
As a member of the Con Brio Ensemble for
almost thirty years, he has performed more
than a hundred chamber music concerts
and recitals in the New York City area.
Performances have included such venues as
Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully
Hall, and Merkin Hall. Mr. Miller’s dedication
to expanding the violin repertoire can be seen
in his frequent commissions and premieres
of the music of living composers. In 2018,
Anton Miller and Maestro Edward Polochick
celebrated their combined 50 years with
Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra by premiering
the LSO-commissioned work The Keys to Your
House by Errollyn Wallen. Recently recorded
and released CDs include three albums with
violist Rita Porfiris (Miller-Porfiris Duo), one
of which features new music for violin and
viola by composers of the Americas. Another
newly released CD features Kurt Weill’s Violin
Concerto. Mr. Miller’s complete discography
can be found on Dorian, Jericho, Full House,
Hugo, Naxos, Klavier, and MP2 Records. Mr.
Miller is currently Professor of Violin at The
Hartt School. He previously has been on the
faculty of the Oberlin Conservatory, Lawrence
University, Swarthmore College, and New
York University. Mr. Miller is currently codirector
of Point CounterPoint chamber music
intensive session for high school students, was
a founder and Artistic Director of the Three
Bridges International Chamber Music Festival
in Minnesota, as well as a co-Artistic Director
of the Silver Bay Festival. Past and current
festival faculty positions also include Foulger
International Music Academy, the Intensive
String Quartet Workshop at New York
University, Aria International Academy, the
Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, the Festival
Eterna Primavera in Cuernavaca, Mexico, the
Summer Festival of Thessaloniki, Musicorda,
Hsing Tien Kon (Taiwan), Bearstown (Korea),
Killington, Hot Springs, and New Arts Festival.
As a chamber musician he can be heard in
concert with the Miller-Porfiris Duo, The Hartt
Quartet, Con Brio Ensemble, and the Phoenix
Ensemble.
Anton Miller completed his Master of Music
degree at The Juilliard School studying with
renowned violin pedagogue Dorothy DeLay
and chamber music with Felix Galimir and
members of the Juilliard Quartet. He received
his Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana
University as a student of Franco Gulli and was
awarded the prestigious Performer’s
Certificate.

COPLAND: Fanfare for the Common Man
Aaron Copland was trained as a composer in Paris, but
much of his work has a distinctive sound that has come
to be identified with this country’s wide-open spaces,
and he created music that will always be identified with
this country. Copland took the title of his Fanfare for the
Common Man from Henry Wallace, Vice-President of
the United States during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s third
term, when Wallace dubbed the twentieth century
“the century of the common man.” The Cincinnati
Symphony commissioned this work, one of eighteen
such requests put forward to American composers for
a fanfare suited to the times. Eugene Goossens, who
led the first performance, told the composer: “Its title is
as interesting as the music, and I think it is so telling that
it deserves a special occasion for its performance. If it
is agreeable to you, we will premiere it on March 12,
1943 at income tax time.” Said Copland: “I was all for
honoring the common man at income tax time.” The
Fanfare for the Common Man is made of the simplest
imaginable materials, but Copland’s sense of timing in
their deployment is masterful—evident immediately in
the majestic but not in the least obvious progression of
the percussion’s introductory call to attention. Leonard
Bernstein called it “the world’s leading hit tune.”

TOMASI: Fanfares Liturgiques
Within the catalog of his instrumental writing, Tomasi
held a strong penchant for wind instruments. His
first composition, a quintet for winds, was indicative
of this preference; Tomasi’s concerti for flute, oboe,
clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, and
saxophone remain valuable additions to each
instrument’s repertoire. His affinity for winds, coupled
with a long held love of drame lyrique, provided an
expressive nexus from which emerged what we
now know as Fanfares Liturgiques.
Based on a play by French poet Oscar Milosz, Tornasi’s
opera Don Juan de Mañara is set in seventeenthcentury
Seville, Spain. The story is inspired by the
biography of Don Miguel Mañara Vincentelo de
Leca who, through the innocence, purity, and love of
a woman named Girolama, turns his back on a life
of depravity in order to marry her. Shortly after their
marriage, Girolama dies and Miguel becomes a monk,
devoting his life to charity and good works.
Unquestionably tonal in nature, Tomasi’s musical
setting of the story received criticism from some of his
contemporaries who championed the avant-garde.
Their criticism was in vivid contrast to the central tenet
of Tomasi’s musical language as expressed by the
composer himself: “Although I haven’t shirked from
using the most modern forms of expression, I’ve always
been a melodist at heart. I can’t stand systems and
sectarianism. I write for the public at large. Music that
doesn’t come from the heart isn’t music.”
Although the opera was completed in 1944, it did not
receive a staged performance until 1956 in Munich,
Germany. However, a “concert performance” of music
from the opera was presented to the public in 1947.
This performance of music from Don Juan de Mañara
was arranged into four movements (originally called
Fanfares Concertantes) and scored for three trumpets,
four horns, four trombones, tuba, timpani, and two
percussionists. The music was published in 1952 as
Fanfares Liturgiques.
Tomasi’s work for brass and percussion is symphonic in
form and demonstrates the musical depth evident in the
composer’s output. The first movement, Annonciation,
is derived from the first scene of Act III in which Miguel
renounces his past life. The shortest of the four
movements, its fiery first theme is counterbalanced
with an introspective second theme. In a nod to sonataallegro
form, the first theme returns at the end of the
movement. The second movement, Evangile, evokes
Miguel’s reading of sacred text later in Act III. Typical of a
symphony’s third movement, Apocalypse is a scherzo
depicting an aged Miguel’s struggle as he confronts
a final temptation by the Earth Spirit. Procession du
Vendredi-Saint, the fourth and final movement, recalls
an earlier scene from Act II. Following Girolama’s death
on Holy Thursday, a procession passes by during which
the Spirit of Heaven sings to a grief-stricken Miguel. The
familiar Dies Irae plainchant serves as an ostinato for
the penitential procession, but gives way to a Corsican
hymn signifying Miguel’s ultimate redemption.

TCHAIKOVSKY: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
The Violin Concerto in D major found its genesis
in the aftermath of a failed romance. In May
1877, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky received a letter
from a former student he could not remember
by the name of Antonina Milyukova. Antonina
claimed to be wildly in love with Tchaikovsky
and, in an attempt to keep his homosexuality
a secret, he pursued her. The two met in early
June of that year and were married by mid-July.
Unsurprisingly, the marriage proved disastrous
and they separated permanently after just six
weeks. Desperate to free himself from the entire

ordeal, Tchaikovsky fled with his brother on an
extended trip to Europe where, over the ensuing
months, he returned to composition.
It was in March of 1878 while the composer
was in Clarens, Switzerland that he penned the
Violin Concerto in D major. There he met his old
friend, the violinist Iosif Kotek, and together the
two played through Édouard Lalo’s Symphonie
Espagnole; this work inspired Tchaikovsky to
compose his own piece for violin and orchestra.
The concerto took less than a month from first
sketches to final touches. Upon its completion,
the composer dedicated the work to the violinist
Leopold Auer, who was to premiere it. Auer,
however, claimed the piece was unplayable due
to its many challenging passages full of double
stops, leaps, and trills and refused to perform it.
Hurt by this proclamation, Tchaikovsky shelved
the piece.
Several years passed before a young violinist by
the name of Adolf Brodsky learned the concerto
and premiered it with the Vienna Philharmonic
in December 1881. The critical response was
mixed. Renowned music critic Eduard Hanslick
gave the work a particularly nasty review, stating
the concerto was pretentious, vulgar, and proved
that “music can exist which stinks to the ear.”
Though Hanslick never came around to the work,
a few years later Auer recognized its brilliance
and began encouraging his students to learn
it. Despite its rocky start, in time the concerto
became one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved
works and is today among the best-known violin
concertos in the repertoire.
The Violin Concerto in D major has a performance
time of about 33 minutes and is filled with the
lyrical melodic lines for which Tchaikovsky is
known. The extreme technical difficulty of the
violin part in the opening Allegro is masterfully
crafted to sound effortlessly controlled while the
movement’s second theme brilliantly exemplifies
Tchaikovsky’s gift for lyricism. A dazzling
cadenza and energetic coda bring the movement
to a close. A lovely, supremely expressive
Andante follows, then launches without pause
into the driving finale. The influence of Russian
folksong that informed so much of Tchaikovsky’s
work is clear here, particularly in the second
theme which plays over a drone of open fifths.
The astonishing speed and complexity of the
solo violin line as the work draws to a close make
for a thrilling listening experience.

MEET THE MUSICIANS
LINDSAY WILEY, OBOE
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Make sure to get private lessons! Oboe
is tough but really rewarding if you have
someone to guide you from the beginning.
Also, reed-making is something you will likely
experience if you play it through high school
and definitely beyond!
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
I LOVE to go eat pho, which is a Vietnamese
noodle soup, a few hours before a concert.
Gets the brain functioning and centers me for
optimum focus. I also like to seclude myself
from others and run the music through my
head instead of practicing with the oboe.
What orchestral work have you never
performed live, but have always wanted to?
I would absolutely love to perform Mahler’s
Das Lied von der Erde. It has beautiful
woodwind lines, especially for oboe and
English horn.
What is your favorite popular artist, band, or
genre?
Radiohead has to be one of if not my favorite
non-classical artist out there. So many it’s
hard to choose, and I love lots of artists from
lots of genres, so not sure I can pick one
genre—but old-school hip hop is definitely up
there!
Tell us about your favorite memory from
working with LSO.
I had the opportunity to perform Respighi’s
Pines of Rome on English horn, which has a
super cool solo in the final movement I got to
perform with my LSO family a few years ago.
It was magic!!!
KIMBERLY BEASLEY, HORN
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Music should be fun. Horn should be fun. Treat
the horn as an extension of yourself and
sing through it in whatever fashion speaks
to you. It can be hard work too, but each
breakthrough in skills opens a new world of
musical experiences.
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
My pre-concert routine is easy: 1. Put the horn
together. 2. Blow a couple notes through the
little end to be sure sound comes out the big
end. 3. Head for the stage, but don’t forget the
music in your case.
What orchestral work have you never
performed live, but have always wanted to?
Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony. Fun horn
parts, fun everything parts … it just makes me
happy.
Tell us about your favorite memory from
working with LSO.
I absolutely love this orchestra, so almost
every opportunity to play with LSO becomes
a favorite memory. I'll pick two instead. One
was a concert at St. Paul's. The program
featured a bunch of beautiful solo/melody
lines doubled between principal cello and
3rd horn (thank you composers!), and I got to
soloistically blend with the cello sound much
of the evening—very satisfying. The other
was a Halloween concert several years ago.
I got to dress up in my mother's wedding
dress and "process" every time I entered or
left stage as if walking down the aisle. Making
Ed Polochick crack up and almost lose it as
he looked back and realized he was cueing a
bride was worth the effort. Seeing my dad's
reaction to his daughter wearing his wife's
wedding dress on stage was priceless too.

ELIZABETH GRUNIN, CELLO
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Get a good teacher, someone who will do a very
thorough job with posture and arm placement.
Tell us about your pre-concert routine.
Before the concert I check my clock about five
thousand times to make sure I am on time, and
panic about maybe getting the time wrong, and
worry about a time change. I call my stand partner
to check the call time, and other times, she calls me.
I eat a light snack, usually a banana.
If you could play any other instrument in the
orchestra, what would it be and why?
I would play the harp. It is such a magical
instrument.
What orchestral work have you never performed
live, but have always wanted to?
I would like to play Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana or
Verdi’s Aida.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do in
your spare time?
I teach music at my studio, give online lectures, knit
shawls, swim, and take my dogs and cat on walks.

LINDA CALVERT, VIOLIN
How long have you played your instrument?
I started playing the violin in 5th grade and
joined the LSO in 12th grade. This is my 49th
year with the LSO.
If you could play any other instrument in the
orchestra, what would it be and why?
When I was very young, I wanted to play
percussion (like my big brother) or flute.
My mother wanted me to play violin for 2
reasons: 1) they will need more violinists than
percussionists or flutes, and 2) she insisted
it be a small instrument because she was
tired of helping load and unload my brother’s
drums.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do
in your spare time?
My background includes human resources,
real estate, and property management. I
spend a great amount of time restoring and
landscaping my 1940 home.
CHUNYANG WANG, BASS
How long have you played your instrument?
22 years. Fun fact, I’m the third generation to play
the bass in my family.
When you’re not practicing, what do you do in
your spare time?
I enjoy cooking a lot, and spending time with my
wife, Anne, and daughter, Zoe.
What advice do you have for someone who
wants to learn your instrument?
Have a big car and be OK with random people
asking you if you had wished to play the piccolo!
What is your favorite popular artist, band, or
genre?
I love going back to my favorite bands from high
school—Green Day and Linkin Park—and I also
really enjoy artists like Imogen Heap and Halsey.
Tell us about your favorite memory from working
with LSO.
I would have to say last year’s Russian Dances. I
love Shostakovich, so getting to play the Chamber
Symphony for the first time WITH added dancers
was awesome!
