FACULTY OF PHARMACY
A N N U A L
Academic year 2012/2013
Bratislava 2012
Comenius University in Bratislava, 2012
ISBN 978-80-223-3242-2
Dear colleagues, dear students,
SPEECH OF THE DEAN
Faculty of Pharmacy, which belongs among the pillars of the Comenius University in all areas,
and whose prestige as a European academic institution attracts national as well as foreign students
from all over the world, commemorates this academic year 60 th anniversary of its establishment.
During this period the faculty has managed to become part of the whole-universities excellent centers
for bio-medical research, partner of more then thirty foreign research centers from all over the world
and to build its current high national and international reputation and recognition. After sixty years of
active every-day work of the faculty and its graduates, whether in pharmacies, pharmaceutical
institutions or companies, it is obvious that the education offered by the faculty provides a full life
realisation and professional and social recognition for its graduates.
Everyone knows that the most difficult task is to maintain the high level, once achieved. It is
the duty and the effort of the faculty leaders, together with the development of the faculty,
improvement of its reputation and recognition, also to bring up new generations of pharmacists able to
develop successfully pharmacy as such. My belief is constant: if the student – teacher relationship is
to be a factor in the process of the creation of space for knowledge transmission and receipt, it must
be based on mutual respect, recognition, acceptance and collaboration. The teachers’ ability to
transmit to others on a daily basis their academic dispositions and ideas, their ability to write and
implement science, to motivate, encourage and teach through their own approach, their willingness to
spend time with the students is the principle that I will struggle to maintain at the faculty. At the same
time, I will make every effort in order that you – students - can develop a close relation to the faculty
where you will spend an important stage of your lives. I will make every effort that your liking for the
institution that is a part of the great family called Comenius University can get under your skin, so that
you shall be proud of where you study.
The faculty is the space we share; the faculty with its past and present. The faculty - it is the
teachers: professors, associate professors, assistants and scientific and pedagogic staff. However, it
is the same faculty with its future, which is you: students, PhD students and graduates. If it is true that
the teacher is a co-creator of the noblest human properties, then I wish us all and, in the first place I
wish you – the students that this substance of ethics of the teaching profession is present at our
faculty every single day of this academic year and during all academic years that are to come. I wish
you can find the space offered by the academic environment because it is now that you are forming
reasons to come back to the faculty regularly and repeatedly. It is the faculty where you will get the
knowledge you will need to maintain your professional continuity and provision of your career growth.
The research activities of the department are directed towards the complex
research, design and study of the properties of bioactive molecules - potential drugs.
The central idea is the chirality of bioactive compounds, their preparation and their
effect upon biosystems. The research activity is mainly performed in the following
areas:
- study of newly synthesized compounds with -adrenergic effect, stereo
selective synthesis of selected aryloxyaminopropanol type compounds;
- design, preparation and study of properties of new membrane active
amphiphilic compounds including the assessment of their biological activity
on the cellular and sub-cellular level;
- utilization of enantiomeric separation methods for evaluation of stereo
selective metabolism of selected drugs possesing stereogenic centre(s);
- design, preparation and study of coordination compounds of biologically
important central atoms and ligands mainly with antiflogistic, radioprotective
and superoxide dismutase like activities;
- 16 -
- research in the field of compounds negatively influencing the human body
(illicit drugs, antidoping and other prohibited compounds) in the framework
of the Centre of excellence in security research;
- employing computer methods for designing of new biologically active
compounds - CAMD (computer-aided molecular design).
The department research is focused on requirements of the social practice and
is targeted at the drugs with the biogenic origin:
Pharmacognosy in its research programme comes out of natural materials
(drugs, fresh plants, vegetable and animal products), tests and isolates their active
substances, determines their structure, studies the mechanics of their production and
their significance in the context of living nature. It also studies anatomical and
morphological evaluation of practically significant drugs.
Department of botany and pharmacoergasis studies the effects of the
exogenetic factors on medicinal plants. The research is focused on the solution of
practical and theoretical problems of the relation between the production of
therapeutically active substances and biomass production; the problems of
