This video is an ideal way for staff tofind out about the key principles in a quick and accessible way’Book Nowhttp://bit.ly/OTJRCoA2021Patient Safety in Perioperative PracticeTuesday 20 April 2021Professor Alan Lobo (centre) and Professor Danny Hind (far right) outside theRoyal Hallamshire Hospital with nurses and practitioners from Sheffield’sspecialist inflammatory bowel centreSheffield Teaching Hospitals to lead £450,000 grant award that aims tochange the way healthcare services respond to the needs of those livingwith inflammatory bowel diseaseResearchers from Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust areto play a leading role in a major new study that aims to change theway healthcare services respond to the needs of people living withinflammatory bowel disease by putting the patient’s voice at the centreof care.The £450,000 grant award, which is being funded by the HealthFoundation’s Common Ambition programme, seeks to createpartnerships, led by people living with inflammatory bowel disease, toco-design future services and improve care.It is one of four national projects selected from over 350 nationalapplicants.The research will be led by Professor Alan Lobo, ConsultantGastroenterologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in partnership withthe University of Sheffield and Crohn’s and Colitis UK.It will build on previous research awards given to Professor Lobo and histeam at Sheffield’s inflammatory bowel disease centre that put patientsat the heart of decision-making.The study evaluation will be led by Professor Dan Hind of the Universityof Sheffield’s School of Health and Related Research, who are recognisedfor their world leading health services research.Advances in treatments of inflammatory bowel disease have beenrapid in the past few years, with more and more new drugs andaffordable therapies becoming available. This includes powerful drugsthat target the immune response and biosimilar drugs, newer versionsof original licensed biological drugs, that can be given to patients inhospital through a drip or at home by injection pen. However, thereremain limitations in patients’ opportunities to express to healthcareprofessionals what is important to them and to develop personalisedcare.During the three-year study, the team will actively engage withlesser heard voices in the community, helped by independent charityVoiceability, including those from ethnic minority backgrounds,disadvantaged groups and women’s groups, to understand what mattersto them.All 4,000 patients attending Sheffield’s specialist inflammatory bowelcentre will be invited to participate in a way that is accessible to them.There will also be an app to deliver real time information from peoplewith inflammatory bowel disease to clinicians.Professor Alan Lobo, Consultant Gastroenterologist at Sheffield TeachingHospitals NHS Foundation Trust and chief investigator of the study, said:“This is a really exciting project which could represent a radical shiftin the way groups of healthcare services engage with patients. As oneof the largest inflammatory bowel disease centres in the country, thisis also excellent news #PSPP21 for Sheffield as we can recruit large numbers ofpatients and engage with a huge and diverse population. We will becommunicating with all our patients about the study in due course, andreaching out to lesser 5 CPD heard credits voices to further understand what mattersto them.”Inflammatory bowel disease affects 300,000 people in the UK (orroughly 1 in every 210 people).
