A £1.7M refurbishment of theatres at WhippsCross hospital in Leytonstone has createda new state-of-the-art operating room withclean air canopy, LED theatre lights and a4-bed recovery room, all served by resilientBender Medical IT power systems.Whipps Cross hospital is a large generalhospital and one of four major hospitalsoperated by Barts Health NHS Trust; the othersare The Royal London, St Bartholomew’s,and Newham. The Trust provides healthcareservices for 2.3 million east London residents.On this particular Barts Health NHS Trustproject, Bender UK worked with Medical AirTechnology (MAT), which designed the theatreand recovery room services. MAT provided afull HTM 03-01 compliant critical ventilation,controls and specialist equipment package,including an ECO-flow ultraclean ventilationcanopy.Bender UK designed and installed all the criticalcare power and supplied and commissionedMerivaara Q-FlowTM LED surgical lights and anew CP924 glass theatre control panel.Bender UK provides critical power, lightsand hygienic control panel for newOperating Theatre at Whipps Cross HospitalThe distinctive circular Merivaara lightswork effectively with ECO-flow ultracleancanopies, enabling an uninterrupted flow ofclean air over the operating table - protectingthe patient from airborne infection andimproving post-operative recovery rates. Thelights deliver market leading R9 99 and R1399 colour rendering and offer unique shadowreduction properties.During the design phase, the team had to dealwith space constraints. Bender UK overcamethis by engineering a bespoke power solutionthat delivered resilient Group 2 medical ITpower (IPS) and uninterruptible power (UPS)that served the operating theatre and 4-bedrecovery room.It incorporated split modular medical ITPower, designed with remote transformersand separate wall mounted distributionboards installed local to the theatre. Thepower system has both floor and wall mount8kVA IPS units, incorporating EDS, 12 MCBs andflush-mount fully programmable remote alarmpanel (MK243OS-11). A 20kVA 1:1 UPS ratedat 20 kVA for 60 minutes, including HTM 0601:2017 compliant battery array, completedthe resilient critical power provision.Inside the theatre, Bender installed aCP924 theatre control panel with a remotePLC interface box outside the area, whichmeans maintenance can be carried withoutcompromising theatre availability or infectioncontrol.The glass touchscreen is intuitive for clinicalstaff to use, while delivering significantbenefits in terms of easy cleaning and infectioncontrol. A 42-inch DICOM compliant PACS withglass fascia, membrane keyboard and medicalPC was also installed.MAT’s ECO-flow ultraclean ventilation (UCV)system is a proven and effective way to cleanthe air in operating theatres, dramaticallyreducing the risks of surgical site infection(SSI).
