to open to the Reiki I energy in an undeniable way. They did not open

strongly, however, and not everyone developed the hot hands and inner

sensations that mark a Reiki opening. My Reiki II teacher continued to

instruct me by telephone, with bits and pieces of information I had to fit

together myself. I grew more and more frustrated but I had no other source

for the teaching.

In June, 1990, at Summer Solstice I taught a workshop weekend near

Denver. In the workshops I offered Reiki I attunements on an experimental

basis to anyone who wished to try it. Six women agreed and all opened to the

Reiki energy. After the weekend in Denver, the partner of my Reiki II

teacher, who was also travelling in the area, came to spend a day with me. A

friend of hers whom I hadn’t met before drove her to the house I was staying

at and remained for dinner. During dinner I talked about the workshops and

how I wished for the Reiki III attunement, “so I could do it right.” The friend

She thoroughly scolded me for several aspects of my teaching. One thing she

protested was my allowing my students to watch me pass the sacred

attunements—something I continue to do. She protested my method of

passing the attunements as not the Traditional method, insisting that any

change in the Traditional way makes the system no longer Reiki. I disagreed.

The woman housing me intervened at this point with the suggestion that

the woman teach me the “right” way and then certify me, or otherwise stop

wasting my time. The woman agreed to do so and spent a hour or so the next

day instructing me in Traditional attunement and teaching methods. She

repeated my Reiki III attunement in the Traditional format as well. The

woman promised me a certificate which she never issued, saying that she

would not do so unless I adopted her strictly Traditional methods. What I was
