Not many women can stand in
front of the mirror and say they like
what they see. Body imperfections
have led to body-shaming for a long
time now. Most affected are those
on the curvy side. Not only do they
body-shame themselves, they are
also shamed by society who
perceive that to be beautiful,
requires one being slimmer, smaller
and light-skinned if possible.
Curvy women have been put in
a special box called plus size; a kind and polite way of
describing a person as fat.
Media message often portray the slim as glamorous and
most clothes that depict it are created in sizes below curvy.
People are body-shamed when they appear overweight
or underweight or don’t fit society’s view of “thin and
beautiful”. Such shaming often result in depression and lack
of self-esteem in the one shamed.
Our cover personality, Makioba Bob-Manuel Olugbile, in
2016, took on the challenge to create pieces that curvy
women envision to wear. This decision turned out to be a
good one that has brought her fame and acclaim. She tells
her story to Yemisi Suleiman. Pg. 4-5.
Finding the right words to say to a grieving person can
