WELCOME...
Not many women can stand in
front of the mirror and say they like
what they see. Body imperfections
have led to body-shaming for a long
time now. Most affected are those
on the curvy side. Not only do they
body-shame themselves, they are
also shamed by society who
perceive that to be beautiful,
requires one being slimmer, smaller
and light-skinned if possible.
Curvy women have been put in
a special box called plus size; a kind and polite way of
describing a person as fat.
Media message often portray the slim as glamorous and
most clothes that depict it are created in sizes below curvy.
People are body-shamed when they appear overweight
or underweight or don’t fit society’s view of “thin and
beautiful”. Such shaming often result in depression and lack
of self-esteem in the one shamed.
Our cover personality, Makioba Bob-Manuel Olugbile, in
2016, took on the challenge to create pieces that curvy
women envision to wear. This decision turned out to be a
good one that has brought her fame and acclaim. She tells
her story to Yemisi Suleiman. Pg. 4-5.
Finding the right words to say to a grieving person can
prove difficult sometimes. But your visit to a bereaved friend
INTERVIEW
Makioba Olugbile:
Beautifying The Curvy
Words By - Yemisi Suleiman
Fashion designer, Makioba Bob-Manuel Olugbile has perfected her craft of designing for
plus size women over the years.
Created in 2012, as a fashion-forward brand that caters to women of every size and
shape, the brand known for its intricate use of embellishments and luxurious fabrics, officially
forayed into the plus-size market after a successful debut of her plus size collection at the Lagos
Fashion and Design Week in 2016. With a vision to creating the right attitude and confidence in
women, Maki O as she’s simply called, dedicates her design process to making pieces that drape,
frame, and flatter the fuller figure.
As she clocks 43 this May, and about 10 years in the industry, the graduate of Economics from
the University of Port-Harcourt, who left her oil company job to focus on fashion designing, talks
to Allure about her much-loved career amongst other issues.
How did fashion designing begin for you?
It began as the result of a hunger to be an
entrepreneur. I had to look for the best and easiest
thing I could do because I didn’t want to do the
regular buying and selling. Being a creative person,
fashion is something that comes naturally. I wasn’t so
inclined towards buying and selling because I am not
so good at the whole convincing thing and going
back and forth with customers and all that.
As a creative person, I had to create something I
could showcase for people to see. That was why I
chose fashion.
How long have you been in the fashion industry?
What initial ideas did you have coming into the
industry?
Right from my learning days till now, which is
about 12years now, my ideas had been couture glam
wears, ready-to-wear outfits and anything that would
make one look comfortable, classic and timeless.
Which is what I still do today.
What was the first piece you ever designed?
A green skirt I made with needle and thread, just
because I could not operate the sewing machine.
You left a well-paying job in the oil sector to
pursue a career in fashion. Was it hard to give up
a life you knew for the unexpected?
Of course, it was; because you know that at the
end of the month, you have something to collect for
your efforts. So, leaving that for something that isn’t
really certain, took a lot of determination. The truth is,
you can’t wait for the right moment forever.
How has your work evolved since you began your
own label?
Ha! When I look back at my early works, I laugh a
lot and still get inspired by them. Finding my bearing
and which way to go in the fashion industry, took me
about 3-5years. It started off with me just making
regular dresses in regular sizes, smaller sizes. But I
came to find out that when I put them on the
mannequin, they weren’t what I had envisioned. So, I
began using myself as the muse for my designs. With
that, I began getting calls and orders from plus size
women, which I believe, is the usual African body
anyway. That was how I got labelled a plus-size
designer which I still am till date.
Your brand is renowned for intricate use of
embellishments. What inspired the aesthetic?
I have always been a bling-bling lover. I love
flowers, trinkets, bling and all that. So, as a fashion
designer, I would definitely want to display that part of
me.
What are you fascinated by at the moment and
how does it feed into your work?
I get fascinated by designs. I am a freak for
designs. Even in the middle of the night, once
inspired, I am always awake designing something. I
just get fascinated by seeing my designs being
brought to life.
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned
since you started your company?
I have learned that in dealing with different kinds of
people, you need to have a whole lot of patience.
How do you walk the line between being unique
and having commercial appeal?
You know how the society believes that the
plus-size women’s dresses would be boubous, big
dresses and dresses with little or no fitting? So, what I
did was to tell the plus-sized women that you could be
in those dresses you pictured yourselves in and look
as nice as you would look if you were slimmer. The
idea is to tell them that they can be bold, elegant and
classic just the way they are.
To achieve that, I was able to develop my own size
chart for the African body which I use for all my outfits.
That is why they fit so good.
What is your most proud accomplishment as a
plus-size designer to date?
My most proud accomplishment, that would be my
size chart that I developed for the African body type. It
is about 90% accurate, and anytime I use it for my
customers, they are always very happy and
INTERVIEW
impressed with the result because it always fits
perfectly. So, I am very proud of it.
What does the word “fashion” mean to you?
To me, fashion is style. Fashion is all about style
and poise.
You exude so much confidence. Do you have any
advice for plus size women on how to be more
confident in their skin?
Everyone has what makes them happy. I know
that some people feel because they are plus sized,
they are limited to looking certain kind of way. I want to
say they should firstly, accept the body they are in and
every other thing would follow. If they accept the body
they find themselves in, then, they would know the
right dressing, the curves, shape and cut that would
bring out that confidence, the classic look, and glam
they are looking for.
What are some fashion pieces every plus-size
woman should have in her wardrobe?
What every plus-size woman should have in her
wardrobe; number one is spandex. The second one is
a well-supported bra, these two items are definitely a
must have for every plus-size woman.
Where do you draw inspiration from when
creating a new collection?
I draw inspiration from everywhere. From the
smallest to the biggest things in life. From children’s
animation to what the local groundnut seller is
hawking. Everybody around me is an inspiration to
me. I am a very imaginative person, so when I see
things, I get inspired by them. When I see peoples’
colour combinations or their dress patterns, I get
inspired by them. The whole world is my inspiration.
Describe a typical day in your life.
A typical day in my life: I wake up, dress up for
work with my hair woven all back, and with no
make-up. I take two small packs of crackers biscuit,
drink a lot of water, spend a lot of time standing,
making pattern drafting and cutting, supervising my
staff, take a break after about five hours. I get back to
work, get the job done for the day and come back to
my family.
Where do you see fashion heading in the next 5
years?
Fashion has always evolved and it is always
evolving. So, there is no telling where we would find
ourselves fashion-wise. But the fashion calendar is
always an interesting one to see.
collections, lookbooks and several side designs that
don’t even make it to any collection. So, for 2021, we
would like to achieve that feat of bringing out a
minimum of four collections and lookbooks.
Look out for the ‘May by Makioba’ collection that’ll
be dropping this month of May.
What would your advice be for aspiring young
designers, unsure of how to take the first step to
achieving their dreams?
Like I said, it took me about three to four years to
find my bearing and carve out a niche for my brand.
Therefore, all I have to advise is that you make sure
you have a passion for designing, and also, have
patience and resilience in order to make a name for
you and your brand.
What’s next for the brand?
For Makioba, the vision has always been to be
better than how we used to be. So we are all about
taking the next steps to becoming better than we
were.
Trends come and go but they can also be a lot of
fun. When should ladies weigh in on the trends
and when should they stick to the classics?
I would say, for the high-end glam dresses, they
should stick to the classics. While for the easy wears,
summer dresses and casuals, they could hop on the
trends.
As a designer, how has COVID-19 impacted or
affected your business and how did you manage
the period?
In the first place, COVID-19 affected everybody.
For me, I actually went paranoid because of the panic
and I closed shop even before the general lockdown.
This was something that happened during the time I
was working on a particular collection. And because of
the pandemic, I was unable to complete the collection
at that time.; I incurred a lot of losses because it cost a
lot of money to kick-off and I never got to showcase
those outfits from that collection to make back the
money spent.
Also, my dresses are mostly outing dresses, glam
wears and all that. So due to the pandemic; no
parties, no weddings and all. It really affected sales. I
needed to be able to manage staff and sustain the
business. Based on sales at the time, it was really a
trying period. But thank God, things are coming back
on track with the lifting of the lockdown and now, we
are able to successfully manage the virus.
What would you like to achieve before the end of
the year?
Usually, each year at Makioba, we bring out 4-5
I draw
inspiration
from
everywhere.
From the
smallest to the
biggest things
in life.
STRESS BURSTING SEX
POSITIONS FOR COUPLES
S
tress is a natural occurrence in
our daily lives especially in this
era of covid-19 coupled with the
current insecurity climate that’s
becoming rampant in the
country can crush your anxiety about sex.
Too much of it can have a drastic effect on
one’s health, making you tense, exhausted and
orgasm-less since stress is capable of creating
a huge mental block between you and your
grand finale (climaxing). Here are your top
styles to picks from when you want to zap
stress while also delivering the big O (orgasm),
basically the miracle cure.
Doggy (Man’s Best Friend sex position):
Get on all fours, he kneels behind you and enters
from behind- sometimes the best way to de-stress is
to relinquish control. Your lover is completely in
charge, leaving you to do nothing but to sit back and
enjoy the ride.
Spooning sex position: Two of you lie on
your sides facing the same direction, bring your
knees up slightly while he slides up behind your
pelvis and gets in from behind- this is a powerful way
of how physical touch can release endorphins to
calm your nerves.
Standing position: Stay close to the wall
especially if you guys are not used to this style. Spread
your legs slightly while bracing against the wall and bend
over at the waist as he gets in from the back- you can walk
through the door from work and be in this
position in under five minutes. It can serve as
quickie, very powerful for instant relief.
Lotus sex position: Be sure your
lovebird gets into a comfortable cross-legged
position, because he/her is going to be there for
a while. Gently lower yourself down and wrap
your legs and arms around them, and then grind
away- basically a meditative pose and you can
just take a minute to zone out and enjoy the
sensation without lifting a finger.
Coital Alignment Technique:
Keep your pelvis slightly below his and lift your
legs up so your knees are by your elbows. It
may not seem like a big change but gives better
stimulation- for orgasms, not complicated and
you can even add a bullet vibrator to quicken the
process.
Seated Oral: Very simple to indulge in as
one of you get to sit on the edge of the bed/chair,
while the other kneels on the floor and do the
needful by using hand play, oral or sex toysthere’s
no shame in asking your significant other
to help get your stress off your mind. You can
switch it up by focusing on your partner’s
pleasure, either way your stress level will melt
away.
The Lusty Leg: Explore stuffs that seem
insane to be the antidote when stressed or in a
sexual rut. Wear heels and lift your right leg as
high as it will go and if your leg doesn’t go that
way, then try bending it so he can hook his arm
under it. Stand holding onto a table for balance
as he slides in while holding onto your leg and
butt- make some super loud sex like moaning/
shout his name/speak in tongues whatever will
get you to a deep primal place and go for it, if
you think getting spanked will help so be it.
On a final note: figure what works for
you, there is no stress buster than some
rollicking sex, get lucky and it will add extra
spark to your sex life. If you’re feeling
overwhelmed right now, do not deprive yourself,
go for it and be happy.
CREATIVE WAYS TO BRIGHTEN
UP YOUR LIVING ROOM
Figuring out how you can brighten a dark and gloomy room is always a
challenge when moving into a new space. There are several easy ways to
decorate your living to transform it into a brighter abode. Here are some
awesome ideas to brighten any dark living room.
Place mirrors near light
source: An elegant floor or wall
mirror next to a window or table
lamp can effectively reflect natural
light. Make sure that the lamps’ light
isn’t too bright so it doesn’t
overpower the mirror.
6
mirrors
Fairy lights, candles, and
other ambient light
sources: If you are looking to add
some extra light to a room without
overdoing it, you should consider
decorating with long fairy light strings, a
group of large candles, orb lights, or
other ambient lights. Not only will they
offer extra light, but also add
tremendous charm and therapeutic feel.
Deep clean your windows: A
room with stained windows will feel dirty
and limit visibility. Feelings of freshness
and joy will unfold as you discover how
much natural light your room allowed.
Embrace white walls: White
really is the best solution to brighten a
dark room. White sends light bouncing
around your space, reflecting back onto
other surfaces and making the space
look much bigger than it is.
Pick lighter colour or
transparent furniture: We
usually choose our sofas, chairs and
tables based on our personal style and
what we think goes best together. That
said, always consider how your furniture
decisions impact the lighting level of
your home. A stylish, compact sofa in a
lighter color like white, beige, or ivory will
make your room look and feel a lot
bigger and more spacious.
How To Help
In Times Of
Grief
LIVING
By - Jemi Ekunkunbor
Since the outbreak of the
Covid-19 pandemic, and the
thousands of people whose
lives were claimed by the
deadly disease, there is hardly a
family that has not suffered one loss
or the other.
In Nigeria, our case is even made
worse by the killings orchestrated by
bandits, kidnappers and herdsmen
that have become like a movie series.
Death is not only raining, it is pouring
and with it, comes grief and sorrow that
the bereaved must bear.
Quite often, it is not easy to find the
right words to comfort a person who
is bereaved or has suffered a loss.
Notwithstanding, you are expected to
say something to offer your sympathy,
and show your support to the person.
Your words don’t have to be long;
rather, focus on how you say it.
Remember that the person has just
suffered a loss and he or she will be
very sensitive to words. If you have a
tendency to say the wrong thing or
have bad timing with comments, make
a concerted effort to change your
behaviour. What is important at such a
time, is to stay connected, available and
to offer words that touch the heart.
When visiting with somebody who
has suffered a loss, be guided by the
following tips.
1. Listen more, talk less
It is a common site to see visitors to a grieving
friend or family member make an effort to help
the grieving friend feel better by talking so much.
No amount of talking will help when all the
bereaved wants is to find one to whom he or she
can pour out his or her heart.
When you are in the presence of someone
who is grieving, try to listen more and talk less.
Give your bereaved friend the space to express
him or herself and feel heard. If or when they
initiate the conversation, let them pour out their
heart and not constantly interject with your
contributions.
2. Don’t say “I know how you
feel”
When it comes to grieving, no two experiences
are the same. A woman who has never lost a
child or spouse cannot say to another who is
grieving the loss of a child or husband that, “I
know how you feel.” Such statements are too
sweeping and does not help the one grieving.
When words fail you, keep silence or just hold
the hands of the bereaved and let your touch
bring some reassurance and comfort.
3. Be willing to sit in silence
Grief ushers in a variety of strong emotions.
The grIeving person is trying to process many
thoughts and at the same time, trying to find
peace within. At such times, all she needs is
some peace and quiet.
If the grieving person needs to sit in silence to
regain some semblance of peace, be willing to
sit in silence for the duration of your visit. Resist
the urge to speak and let your presence be felt
through your silence. This can be therapeutic as
being there is a sign of your love and support.
4. Don’t start a loud
conversation
If you are a guest in the home of the grieving
family members, never start loud conversations
about unrelated matters. Again, the point must
be stressed that when words fail you, rather
than discussing issues like newspaper
headlines that bring no comfort to the
bereaved, apply the golden rule and keep
silent.
5. Help out with practical tasks
Offer or volunteer practical assistance by
helping with little tasks around the house like,
grocery shopping, doing the dishes, school
run or any task that will take a burden off the
shoulder of the bereaved.
Being sad is lonely. You can from time to time,
send text messages that will lift her spirit or
make her pull a smile. A text saying, “thinking
of you” or “You are not alone” will sure go a long
way to help the bereaved feel better. Find your
own way to offer help to the grieving friend after
all, as her friend, you are in a position to know
her better.
6. Don’t compare your
experience, to the present
unless it is fitting
The fact that two people have suffered the loss
of a spouse doesn’t make the experience the
same. A spouse who passed peacefully at 80
or 85 years, cannot be a fitting comparison to
a 45 year old spouse who died of cancer or
renal failure after months of being in and out
of hospital. Such natural instinct should be
resisted.
7. Don’t comment on their
appearance
Sometimes, one’s pain of grieving manifests in
his or her appearance. Others do a good job
of hiding their pain by maintaining appearance.
Unless you catch them unawares, you may
never know how they are truly feeling. So,
if there are physical indicators that they’re
suffering, don’t comment on that either by giving
diet, hygiene or fashion tips.
audio adaptation of Broadway musical, FELA,
which premiered on the Clubhouse app this
weekend.
The production highlights the struggles of
Nigerian music star and Afrobeat king, Fela
Anikulapo Kuti who was an outspoken critic of
Nigeria’s military regimes and was frequently
arrested for his troubles.
Fela Ten-Twenty director and producer,
Funa Maduka, told CNN that while the audio
adaptation is a nod to the original Broadway
musical, ‘Ten Twenty’ represents the date of
the shooting of protesters by security forces
at the Lekki Toll Gate in October 2020, in the
wake of the nationwide #ENDSars anti-police
brutality protests.
She added that the adaptation on
Clubhouse will frame “the #EndSars
movement in the context of Fela Kuti’s legacy.”
“Fela’s music demanded global engagement
with African political thought. In the aftermath of the
October 2020 #EndSars protests, his message still
achingly resounds. This production is a love letter to
those fighting for a better Nigeria,” said Maduka.
Nnaji will play the role of one of the musician’s
dancers known as the ‘Kalakuta Queens,’ in Fela
Ten-Twenty, the organizers said. Fela, famously
married all 27 women in a single ceremony in 1978.
The actress told CNN via a statement that she
was “honored to be part of the production.” Stating
that the contemporary issues highlighted are what
sold her. “This is an artful retelling of Fela’s story
and I’m honoured to be a part of it,” she said. “I grew
up on radio plays and the experience is nostalgic for
me, the power of voice to influence minds and touch
hearts is undeniable” Nnaji added.
Proceeds from the show on Clubhouse which
began May 15th and today 16th, will go in part, to
support the GEANCO Foundation, which provides
scholarship to young female victims of terrorism and
gender inequality, Maduka said.
