FUNDING YOUR EDUCATION<br />

The main ways to fund your education include scholarships, grants, work study and<br />

loans. Knowing how and when to apply for each type of funding is very important. Texas<br />

Woman’s is here to help with this step-by-step guide.<br />

TWU offers merit- and need-based scholarships. Completing the General <strong>Scholarship</strong><br />

Application will match you with many of the with scholarships you are eligible for.<br />

OUR TOP TIPS<br />

Apply early.<br />

Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)<br />

as early as possible. This application automatically considers you<br />

for grants and loans. Plus, TWU scholarships are awarded on a<br />

first-come, first-serve basis until funds are gone.<br />

Accepting grants.<br />

Always accept any grants from FAFSA first because grants do not<br />

need to be repaid, while loans do.<br />

Complete your TWU application.<br />

Make sure all your documents — such as transcripts and test<br />

scores — are submitted to TWU and your application is complete.<br />

FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO FINANCIAL AID<br />

1. Apply to TWU<br />

a. Complete application for admissions at ApplyTexas.org<br />

b. Check your Pioneer Portal to be sure your application is<br />

complete and you are accepted<br />

2. Complete the FAFSA<br />

a. The FAFSA matches you with loans and need-based grants<br />

b. Submit your FAFSA by Jan. 15 for priority for Summer & Fall<br />

semester starts. Submit by Sept. 1 for a Spring semester start<br />

3. Complete <strong>Scholarship</strong> Applications<br />

a. Apply and search for scholarships at twu.academicworks.com<br />

b. Submit the General Application and automatically match to<br />

“New Student <strong>Scholarship</strong>s” you qualify for<br />

c. <strong>Scholarship</strong> deadlines may vary, the majority close on March 1


APPLICATION DEADLINES<br />

You can apply for scholarships before acceptance<br />

to TWU or your program. However, scholarships<br />

will not be awarded until you are accepted. Make<br />

sure all your required documents — such as<br />

transcripts and test scores — are submitted to<br />

TWU as soon as possible.<br />

Notifications<br />

Priority means applications<br />

submitted by this deadline receive<br />

priority when being considered for<br />

scholarships. When completed by<br />

the priority deadlines, your financial<br />

aid application will be looked at first,<br />

ensuring your aid will be awarded in<br />

time to meet payment deadlines.<br />

Approximately two weeks after being accepted to TWU, general academic merit<br />

scholarship award notifications are sent to selected students. General Academic Merit<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong>s will be awarded through March 1. Other scholarships will be awarded<br />

until funds distributed or school starts in the fall. Check your TWU email account for all<br />

official communications from TWU on scholarships and financial aid.<br />

Any renewable scholarships you have earned are automatically awarded after Spring<br />

grades are posted, if you meet the requirements for renewal.<br />

TYPES OF AID<br />

<strong>Scholarship</strong>s – Aid awarded on merit or need basis. Apply to scholarships at<br />

TWU, by completing the FAFSA or applying to private scholarships.<br />

Grants – Aid that does not need to be repaid after leaving school.<br />

Receive need-based grants by completing the FAFSA.<br />

Student Employment – Aid from a Work-Study program/job or working an<br />

on-campus job as a student assistant.<br />

Loans – Aid borrowed and repaid after leaving school. Receive loans by<br />

completing the FAFSA.<br />

OUR TOP FAFSA TIPS<br />

You will need a Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID to electronically sign your<br />

FAFSA application.<br />

• If you are a dependent, you will need an FSA ID for yourself<br />

and for your parent/guardian<br />

• Visit fsaid.ed.gov to create an FSA ID and to begin and submit<br />

your financial aid application<br />

• Once your FAFSA is submitted, TWU will contact you to<br />

complete any other steps and search for loans and grants<br />

you may qualify for<br />
