The Campaign for
Texas Woman’s University
Open Doors | Fuel Innovation | Cultivate Grit

Open Doors
Texas Woman’s Pioneers are
resilient and dare to achieve
what they dream. At TWU, the
many doors of opportunity are
thrown wide open, empowering
all students to dream big.
“That day changed everything.
One year later, I am double
majoring in social work and
political science and on my
way to law school.”
Jianna Covarelli | Student Regent
TWU HAS OPENED NEW DOORS of possibility for first-generation
college student, Jianna Covarelli. The day Jianna participated in an
electoral training program for women interested in politics through
the Jane Nelson Institute for Women’s Leadership, everything changed
for her. She began as a social work major but discovered that double
majoring in political science and social work would set her on a path
to make an even greater impact. With knowledge from both fields of
study, Jianna plans to attend law school. Her goal is to work in public
policy, analyzing real world problems and developing needed solutions.

Fuel Innovation
From a single building in
1901 to the seventh university
system in Texas, TWU continues
to blaze its own trail. The Fuel
Innovation pathway builds on
transformational ideas.
“My story is one example of
how TWU comes alongside
students and carves a path
where we can help fill a
gap in the current body
of knowledge.”
David Pugh | Physical Therapy
DAVID IS A SECOND-YEAR physical therapy graduate student. He
earned his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Texas
A&M University. TWU Associate Professor Hui-Ting Goh approached
David about joining her research team. With his engineering
background, he could help analyze and process kinematic data.
David has honed his problem solving and critical thinking skills
researching the relationship between stroke patients’ perceived efforts
in motor tasks, brain activity and quality of movements.

“TWU has equipped
me with the strength
of character needed
to excel.”
Makayla Asberry | Nursing
Cultivate Grit
Since our founding, TWU
has recognized the power
of grit. That is why we foster
a culture of confidence
and perseverance.
MAKAYLA IS A FIRST-YEAR nursing major who has been
cultivating a spirit of grit from a young age. The daughter of
a single parent, her journey is shaped by the resilience and
determination of her mother and grandmother. Always aspiring
to learn and do more, from Girl Scouts to student council
president, Makayla knew that TWU would continue to provide
important “grit-gaining” opportunities. The university’s emphasis
on experiential learning has been pivotal in preparing Makayla
for the demanding path to becoming a certified registered
nurse anesthetist.
