FOREWORD
Sir Ace Malatag
Have you ever imagined what the journey has been for students who started taking
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) in Senior High School only to be derailed by the
COVID-19 Pandemic? This photo book gives us a snapshot into their experience and the
key ideas, concepts and principles that they have picked up along the way. They started
their journey in a classroom in the Braga Building, they were able to go on two exposure
trips before the pandemic started. The first for their Introduction to World Religions and
Belief System subject as they visited various temples and religious sites in Metro Manila.
The second exposure trip was attending a social science summit just a few days before the
country went into quarantine. With the quarantine being extended all throughout their
Senior Year, they were forced to continue their journey not in one of the classrooms in the
Braga building but through the google classroom.
They continued to sail, through the harsh seas and wind that they faced, they are now
about to reach their destination. As they go down from their ship they bring with them
precious cargo from their voyage. The knowledge, experience, and memories that they
were able to collect are now part of their treasure. We now have the opportunity to see
what riches they were able to gather. They offer to us photos, art, and lines that they have
captured along the way. Let us appreciate and analyze what is present in this photo book
as it may offer us new perspectives and understandings. There different specialized
subjects and teachers have guided them in their journey as they gather a wealth of knowledge
in the humanities and social sciences. Their voyage had many stops along the way.
With this they have gathered from riches also from their core and applied subjects that
have helped them along their journey.
As they disembark on their HUMSS ship they will now prepare to embark on another journey,
one that is more perilous and uncertain than their previous voyage. As they set sail to
reach new horizons, may this photo book always remind them of where they came from,
what they have accomplished, and what more they can still achieve. May you reach your
destination with all of these in your heart, mind, and soul knowing that there are still
greater things ahead.

Introduction to World Religions and Belief Systems
UNDERWAY FOR PEACE
D HARMONY TOWARDS
OTHER RELIGIONS
As Bosconians of Don Bosco Technical Institute - Makati and students of the Humanities and Social Sciences
Track, we promote mutual understanding and peace among believers of different religions. We are
called to understand and appreciate the uniqueness of each other's faith.
Don Bosco Technical Institute - Makati as a Catholic institution believes in the importance of Ecumenism
and Interfaith Dialogue. With our Catholic Faith and the knowledge of that with the World Religions and
Belief Systems, we strive to develop closer relationships and better understanding with other religions. This
goal can be achieved through humility, openness, and proper education, the result of which is cooperation
and harmony among religions.
We follow Christ’s mission of peace and harmony among the religions as this is our mission as Catholics
and Bosconians of Humanities. To know, to understand and to be enlightened by other faiths is the first step
to the commitment to ecumenism. Jesus has taught us, at the hour of his Passion, 'that they may all be one'
(Jn 17:21).

March 7, 2020, we attended the TIPON: Social Science Summit at UP Diliman with the HUMSS
class together with our advisers. On that day we learned a lot, especially the deep meaning of
Social Sciences and also the speakers stated why social science is important. The speakers
who are experts in their field in social sciences were kind enough to share their knowledge in
their fields. We were also called to participate in activities where we got to meet and think
with HUMSS students from different schools. After the summit, we gathered outside to take a
9
group picture because it can serve as a remembrance.

The TIPON summit was packed with many knowledge about social sciences and we got to
hear from the speakers in their respective fields explain why social sciences are important.
Political topics were part of the discussion such as the Human rights, RH Bill, Sogie Bill, etc. and
how it affects the people and the administration were discussed. We were asked what our
thoughts were regarding the topics. We also had the chance to meet HUMSS students from
different schools and backgrounds in that summit. This photo was taken while our class
representatives took part and participated in an activity by the facilitators during the TIPON

Simple people with their own duty to serve the masses, integrating the social sciences to alleviate
what pains and ails our current society. Simple looking careers, yet in truth, it is noble and daring
to affiliate with aspects such social justice, self efficacy and autonomy, and spreading information
to the people. This section is set to show these careers from our works, that came from appreciation
and understanding towards these as callings to serve. The works which display different
parts of the careers, practicality in action and the values that are essential to people and self.

alarming current situation of the lumad students. It aims to support the members
of the Lumad community who fled from their village to continue their education,
specifically, the Lumad students and other members such as volunteer teachers,
volunteer workers, concerned with the continuation of the bakwit schools which
for them, is one of the most important tools in order to protect and to continue

Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences
Our section is focused on works using approaches aligned with
Jurgen Habermas’ emancipatory domain of human interest. These
are namely marxism and feminism. This section highlights how we
could use marxism and the idea of class conflict to fight back
against the oppressive nature of capitalism, and how we could use
feminism to address sexism and fight back against patriarchal
hegemony.

one another. But through perseverance we managed to create this journal in

To introduce us to our final Performance Task in the subject Trends, Networks
and Critical Thinking, we were tasked to create a moodboard in regards to
our chosen trend. This moodboard was created by one of our classmates,
Ricardo De Lemos. The specific trend he chose was fashion, showcasing how
it evolved through the years and how it proves that clothing has no gender.

Even in the new normal, we persist. The
group presentations for the subject show

assigned presented their topics through creative ways, for example: through
a format of a vlog or a documentary. This gave us a chance to explore and
strengthen our creativity and skills in technology.

In line with our first task in the subject Trends, Networks and Critical Thinking, our
final Performance Task was regarding a trend of our choice. Students were given
time to research and prepare on their chosen trend, creating either a storyboard
or a moodboard as a basis for this Performance Task. We each presented our
insights and predictions of different trends in society through visual aids.

THE IMAGINATION
BETWEEN
THE
DEVIL AND THE
DEEP BLUE SEA
31
MALIKHAING PAGSULAT:
As creative writers we are often at a state of vulnerability when writing,
often bordering on exposing ourselves in matters sensitive to us.
Thus, the nautical term ‘Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’ is
used by sailors when referring to a spot of the ship they need to plug
and maintain water tight which would require the sailor to stand over
the edge or sometimes be suspended on the side. This theme focuses
on the state of us writers as we express ourselves, the hesitation that
lies before we dive into our deepest thoughts and emotions.
32
Speaking of the devil between the Devil and the deep blue sea, this was our gift to sir
Jaymart as a sign of our appreciation for his work. He taught us to be vulnerable in
writing and how it should reflect our purpose and our outlooks and sometimes our
being as a whole which made us really vulnerable to mistakes which would be our
room for growth in the subject.

SA IMAHINASYON NG LAHAT
Despite the pandemic, we, writers, persevered. As we were taught the mechanics
of a short story, our ideas for new and exciting stories flourished through our
fingers and into the keyboards. It didn’t matter then in the start of the pandemic,
and it didn’t matter now. What truly mattered, was that we were able to show and
hone our talents as the new breed of writers through the workshops Sir Jaymart
set up for us. Through those workshops, we came in as amateurs, but came out as
journeymen, excited for our road to being masters of our craft.

CREATIVE
41
To be a creative one must be
willing to let go of their rigid
beliefs on the nature of many
things. That is for us to tap into
the world unknown that reflects
the society we know. We have
done just that where we show a
piece of our life that preceeds
the actual experience to the
sublime life; that reveals the
senses that intensify the feeling.
It is a sense of sonder; that
revels to worship the complex
part of the lives of others. This
is creative nonfiction in action
that embodies the moments
that show underlying meaning
to life of us humans.

In March 25, 2021, the Cultural
Center of the Philippines (CCP)
organized an event about
cultural works and talents. Ours
in paticular relates to the
subject, publishing books and
story making for indigenous
dialects. One could remeber the
experience as being nostalgic.
This is where we see that we are
so priviledged with so many
things that were given to us, the
gift of writing and the gift of
reading. At some point we also
took advantage of being able to
go outside. But, nonetheless we
where able to bide and enjoy
our time taking pictures of our
experience.

The most memorable
experience would be getting a chance to go on a exposure trip to

special. The exchange of ideas during our face to face HUMSS subjects

My memorable

My most
memorable experience
as a HUMSS student is
when we as a class went to Quiapo as part of the

our Exposure Trips to Quiapo and UP,
up to our games and banters in the classroom,
every day and every moment that I
had spent my time as a HUMSS Student
was memorable. It may have been cut

experience by far was memorable and
surely I will treasure this forever in my
heart.
We
volunteered for the PWD Christmas Party event in

WHAT ARE THE LESSONS YOU HAVE LEARNED AS A HUMSS STUDENT?
Teamwork and
family, I learned that people
have also their capabilities to
help other people. I should let myself
be helped by the people I trust
most.
By becoming
a HUMSS student,
I learned that I discovered things about myself that I did not
expect that I can do before. It helped me build my confidence
and to know and work on my strengths and weaknesses which
is essential to help me to be better. I learned that when there is
an opportunity to learn or to participate, grab the
op-
portunity.
The world is
not exactly black and white and this is
why Humanities helps us to see the grey
in the world. We become more human by
having an open mind. Having this kind
of mindset can help humanity as a
whole to become more humane.

lesson that I learned

us understand how the world works

us.
One of the
biggest lesson as
a HUMSS student is to be able to communicate, to
be able to convey your ideas as much as possible, as
long as it is related to the class. Without anyone
expressing themselves there would no be development
with the discussion of the class.
The lesson I
have learned is how

these have taught me some of the most important
lessons in life.
