DECEMBER 2011
FROM THE PRESIDENT
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
Our Christmas get together and sausage sizzle in
the Parkes Crescent Park on the 10th December
was, though a little down on numbers, an enjoyable
day for all involved. My thanks go to the
hard working team of Trevor Smith, Fiona
Bowman, Sandra Irwin, Pat and Tony McAndrew,
Liz and Kia Westlake, Phil and Gail
Redgate and our wonderful face painters Alissa
and Emillie. Also congratulations to the winners
of the colouring competition.
It’s great to see some progress by Council on cleaning up the beach
access area at the end of Callala Beach Road. I understand that they
have more work to do with a table and new timber decking. Just hope
its finished for Christmas.
On behalf of your local Progress Association I wish you all a
Merry and Safe Christmas and look forward to another
successful year in the fantastic Callala area.
See you at the next meeting on the 13th February. Greg Westlake
Continued.
During this time Mrs Coppin has been very active in the organisation of the
annual Easter Fete and has also been one of the driving forces of the facility’s
working bees.
Both Mrs Coppin and Mrs Day have also been extremely instrumental in
securing an interest free loan from Council to help have the tennis court surface
replaced, contributed to the mosaic mural on the hall fascia and helped
in providing the hall with a new air conditioning service.
Shoalhaven City Council Mayor, Paul Green congratulated both women on
their wonderful volunteer service on the Callala Beach Community Hall
Management Committee.
“It is wonderful to see such community minded residents being recognised
for their ongoing volunteer service,” said Clr Green.
“The Shoalhaven is home to a wonderful array of volunteer organisations,
with each group doing their bit to ensure the area is such a wonderful place
in which to reside.
“I would again like to congratulate both Margaret Day and Linda Coppin on
the fantastic service they have provided to the Callala Beach Community
Hall Management Committee.”
CALLALA BUSHCARE REPORT
John Hawksworth
Well another Bushcare Year has come to an end with our last working
session for 2011 on 13 December. We finished with a couple of sessions
at Boorawine Creek in Callala Bay, tidying up the areas we had planted
with natives in mid-2010. We also removed a fair amount of senna
(cassia) and asparagus fern that had re-grown over the year.
In 2011, our seventh year of operation, we
delivered over 700 hours of volunteer
labour looking after natural areas in the
Callala-Myola area. This year we ran a
number of guided walks through local
reserves with Callala Public School
students and we have agreed to continue
working with the School next year.
Greenway Road Bushcare Group ceased
operating during 2011 and Shoalhaven City
Council has asked Callala Bushcare Group
to take on responsibility for weed control
efforts in the foreshore along Greenway
Road. Council has offered us the assistance of their newly formed mobile
Youth Bushcare Group with the Greenway Road task. The Youth Bushcare
Group will work each month with a different established Bushcare
Group and we expect them in Callala Beach in March.
Last month I reported on the activities of the Greenway Road vandaliser
of “Tree Vandalism” signs. Council’s nice new sign had been painted out
with matt black paint within 24 hours of erection. I wondered how long
the replacement sign would last. Now we know. It lasted just 4 days before
being painted out, this time in a fetching green colour. The sign has
recently been cleaned. Any bets on when the phantom painter will strike
again? If you see any suspicious activity whether tree vandalism or sign
vandalism please report it immediately to Council on 44293111 or after
hours 44213100.
Bushcare continued.
We are going to take a couple of weeks off for the holidays. Our first
session for 2012 will be on Tuesday 3 January. I’m thinking we might
make this a walk along the beach to Carama Inlet but that will depend on
weeds and weather. To receive information on our future activities drop
me an email or give me a phone call.
Callala Bushcare Group’s regular meetings are every Tuesday (weather
permitting) at 8am for a two-hour working session in one of our local
reserves or patches of bushland. Venue and activities vary from week to
week. New volunteers are always welcome. Training and equipment are
provided. For more details contact me on 44464793 or email
CALLALA BEACH
VOLUNTEER RURAL FIRE BRIGADE
Dave Lawther.
Over the past month there were two callouts.
The first was to a backyard burn in Queen Mary Street
where there was a large pile of furniture being burnt
and the second was also in Queen Mary Street. This fire
was a car that had caught alight and was severely
damaged in the engine compartment area.
The hazard reductions that are planned to take place in the Callala
Beach/Myola area will now not take place until possibly autumn.
Before any hazard reduction burns take place notice will be given to
residents in the areas near the burns by letter box drops and signs in the
notice board at least 24 hours in advance of the burn.
Training is proceeding each month with members engaging in various
aspects of fire fighting including simulated structure fires, planning for
problems in the commercial areas of the villages and creeks and community
education when requested.
The Brigade would like to wish all residents and visitors a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year and please be careful with fire during
the festive season.
With the holiday season quickly approaching we ask all residents to be
vigilant and report all fires to 000. Information on fire regulations is
available in the shop and the caravan park and also at the fire station on
most Sunday mornings.
PERMITS ARE NOW REQUIRED
Permits are now required until end of March 2012 for all fires in the
open. Residents requiring permits can contact the Permit Issuing
Officers on 4446 5728 or 4446 5455 (Myola). Please give the Permit
Officers a few days notice when requesting a permit. Permits cannot be
issued after 3.00pm on Fridays until Monday mornings
Fire Brigade continued.
Details on permit requirements will be given at the site inspection.
Briefly, the permit holder must notify their neighbours and Fire
Control (4424 4424 during office hours ) 24 hours before burning. It is
advisable to have water available, the size of pile to be no bigger than
1.5 metres across and a responsible person must remain with the fire at
all times until it is extinguished. If water is not available then an alternative
method of extinguishing the fire must be available. This could
be a tractor, loader or handtools to make a fire break to prevent the fire
from spreading. Also burning small piles and feeding the small pile
from the larger pile is a safe way of conducting a pile burn. Courtesy
must be considered for your neighbours. Please do not smoke them out
as it quite often results in a phone call to the brigade to come and extinguish
the fire.
New members are always welcome. Please contact Captain Jenny
Lawther on 44465728.
Please report all fires to 000
FAREWELL AND THANKYOU
KATHLEEN (KATH) McDONALD
Kath died on November 18th 2011 after a long illness.
Kath and Jim McDonald were one of the early residents of Callala Beach
village and during their long lives worked hard to promote the growth
and welfare of the area.
I well remember meeting Kath over twenty years ago as a newcomer and
she explained to me the importance of contributing to the Community,
and she lead by example.
Kath worked hard for the Progress Association, not afraid to speak up or
to tackle tough issues. She was involved in the Flannel Flower Festival
and of course the Callala Beach RSL.
Kath was a Christian, and when the Community Hall was burnt down,
she and others worked mightily to build an Anglican Church. It took a
great deal of hard work and when it was finally opened Kath was overjoyed.
Kath loved her family and friends, she enjoyed golf and indoor bowls
and gave so much to her community.
Our sympathy goes to Jim and the family and our thanks for the privilege
of knowing Kath McDonald.
CAROLE FALZON
Carole died on 26th November 2011, after a short illness.
Carole and Sam, her husband, came to Callala Beach many years ago
and worked diligently to improve the area.
At the Easter Fete, Carole always sat at the door and sold our raffle
tickets, her wonderful smile and cheery greeting meant that few could
resist her request to buy.
She also contributed in many other ways.
Carole was the Social Secretary of the Pensioners group, organizing
exciting trips which are still talked about today. She loved to play tennis
with her friends and enjoyed line-dancing.
Carole will be missed by her many friends and our love and thoughts are
with Sam, Kerrie and Paul and family.
Thank You Carole.
INDOOR BOWLS
The Callala indoor bowlers kicked up their heels on Sunday night to the
music of the RSL's resident DJ.
Bruce and Shirley Bowker turned out to be a right pair of ravers, obviously
the music was well suited to 'we' who 'lived' in the sixties and seventies,
we knew how to enjoy ourselves then and we certainly know how
to have a good night now.
Noelene Branton was a busy lady, filling in for a 'not happy Jan' husband
Barry. After receiving her champion of champions trophy from the match
organisers Joan and Shirley, Noelene did a quick costume change and
made a wonderful Mrs Claus, a job usually performed and organised so
well by Barry.
It was unfortunate that a couple of nasty injuries kept the secretary and
the president at home that night, they missed a great night. Bowling starts
again on Monday 30th January. Pat McAndrew
The Donkey Storey
One day a farmers donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously
for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the animal was old and the well needed to be covered
up anyway, it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbours to come over and help him. They all
grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey
realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s
amazement, he quieted down.
A few shovels loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He
was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back,
the donkey was doing something amazing. He would shake it off and
take a step up.
As the farmers neighbours continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal,
he would shake it off and take a step up. Pretty soon, everyone was
amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily
trotted off.
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting
out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is
a stepping stone. We can get out of the deepest well just by not stopping,
never give up! Shake it off and take a step up.
The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who tried to bury him.
The gash from the bite got infected and the farmer eventually died in agony
from septic shock.
The moral of the story.
When you do something wrong, and try and cover your ass, it always
comes back to bite you.
Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
