Investigated 

April 26 

Texas Highway Patrolmen 

James Davis and James 

Sanders investigated a one-ca- r 

accident April 26, 1 mile 

southwest of Haskell on a 

county dirt road. 

The accident occurred at 

about 1:15 a.m. as David 

Muehle, 21, of Rochester, lost 

control of his vehicle. He was 

approaching a "T" intersection 

when the accident 

occurred. The vehicle overturned. 

Muehle was treated and 

released at Knox City hospital. 

Citations were issued.

Two Haskell brothers, Jim Bob and Joe D. Micklcr were elected 

yell leaders at Texas A&M University April 8. They were the top vote 

getters in the elections. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. James 

Ross Micklcr. Jim Bob will be a senior animal science major next 

year and will be head yell leader. He is Inspector General on the 

Corps Staff and on the R.V. 21 Gun Salute team. 

Joe is an animal science major and is Scholastics officer on Wing 

Staff. 

As far as can be determined, this is the first time ever for brothers 

to be elected yell leaders at the same time. 

Another note worthy fact is that in recent years several other 

Haskell students have been yell leaders at A&M. They include: Mike 

Overton, Ricky Perry, Terry and Keith Chapman. The Micklers make 

the fifth and sixth yell leaders from Haskell County which might very 

well be another record for Haskell

Abe Turner, president of 

Haskell National Bank, is 

reportedly doing fine

morning at Methodist Hospital 

in Houston. 

The report came Tuesday 

afternoon and said that he was 

sitting up and recovering fine. 

He is still in the intensive care 

unit and will be for several 

more days, but doctors arc 

pleased with his progress.

Shcppard Air Force Base in 

Wichita Falls. 

The special Olympics were

Bartley is the son of Mrs.

R. W. Reynolds, superintendent 

of the Putnam Schools 

has an unusual hobby. It is an 

antique business housed in an 

old abandoned 70,000-barre- l 

oil storage tank. 

R. W., as his friends call 

him, opens his place called the 

FLEAMK on weekends and by 

appointment when it does not 

interfere with his school 

affairs. 

He is a former teacher in 

Haskell and Paint Creek 

Schools. 

There arc two questions 

that are asked by most of 

those entering the big tank for 

the first time: Where do you 

get it and how long have you 

been collecting it? 

The answer to the first one 

is easy because he has been 

"at it" for about five years. 

Answering the second is a bit 

more complicated because he 

makes auctions, estate sales, 

buys from other dealers and 

individuals and gets some of it 

from people who bring it to 

him He usually concludes his 

explanation by saying that 

when people find out you are 

the "junk" man they bring it 

to you.

Mosquitoes, those bloodsucking 

parasites that make 

life a misery for animals and 

mankind, have parasites of 

their own! And It's to the 

enemies of the mosquito that 

entomologists arc looking for 

help in controlling tliese pests. 

Insecticides alone can't do 

the job; in the last few years 

some species of mosquitoes 

have developed resistance. In 

many places, larger and laiger 

doses of insecticide give less 

and less control. 

This resistance, plus widespread 

concern for the safety 

of our environment, lias 

emphasied the need lor a 

variety of control methods. 

The biological approach to 

mosquito control offers great 

hope. It uses parasites, 

pathogens (disease) and predators 

to reduce mosquito 

populations to tolerable levels. 

Entomologists with the 

Experiment Station say pathogens 

look especially promising 

as one answer to mosqui- 

to-related problems in 

Texas. Dr. Jim Olson, project 

leader for mosquito research, 

says there are a large number 

of pathogenic agents, discovered 

by scientists throughout 

the world, that show 

promise as mosquito control 

agents. 

Among these agents, those 

that belong to the nematode 

(round worms), fungi and 

protozoa (single-celle- d animals) 

groups have received the 

most intensive study. This 

is because of then I requeue 

of occurrence in natiii.il mosquito 

populations and because 

of their demonstrated dead 

lines to mosquitoes under 

laboratory conditions 

Olson and his associates 

have been studying one sudi 

important "junk man. 

R. W. plans to devote all his 

energies to the FLEAMK 

when he retires from teaching 

in a year or so, but until then, 

it is only a hobby.

confinement, these mosquito 

species would be the ones 

that we would look to first 

in terms of using parasite 

control." says Olson. 

"Resistance of some mosquitoes 

to infection by a 

parasite is also a problem. In 

the case of the protozoan 

that we arc investigating, we 

have found some mosquito 

species that can resist infections 

even undci confined 

laboratory conditions. 

"Thus, we cither have to 

figure out how to compromise 

this resistance or just 

accept the fact that we cannot 

use the parasite for the control 

of these particular 

species. Failure of a given 

pathogen to work in some 

cases is a fact of life that 

scientists must learn to live

Crops Progressing. 

Any wiiy you figure it, agriculture income continues to 

erode. For the fifth consecutive month, farm prices have 

shown declines. Parity as of the middle of March is 68. That 

is down a point from a month ago and down 21 points 

from a year ago 

But for the first time in many months, the livestock and 

livestock products index did manage to show a meager one 

per cent month. But in 

increase over the previous 

perspective, it is down 27 per cent from the 1974 level. 

Contributing to the slight increase were higher prices for 

hogs, lambs, turkeys, and eggs. 

Texas farm prices continue in the doldrums All 

categories of livestock, with the exception of sheep, 

continue well below parity levels. Hogs, for example, in 

Texas averaged S37.30 per hundred pounds, while parity is 

$46 40 

Calf prices continue to show the most significant 

difference. Average calf price in Texas is 21.70 cents per 

pound, parity is 65.60 cents per pound. Thus, calves arc 

bringing less than a third of the parity figure. 

Crops are also in similar difficulties. Cotton in Texas 

averaged 25 cents per pound, parity is 75.28 cents per 

pound Grain sorghum averaged S3.99 per hundredweight. 

This is down 20 cents from a month ago and compares with 

a parity price of $4.94. Wheat averaged $3.45 while parity 

is S4 43 

Turkeys at 37 cents per pound average compare with a 

45.2 cents per pound parity. Eggs are more than a dime a 

dozen below parity. Wool and mohair are also at below 

parity prices, as is milk. 

TEXAS IS FAR and away the nation's leading producer 

of mohair. But mohair production in the state is now at its 

lowest level in 50 years. 

The Texas Crop and Livestock Reporting Service notes 

that production of mohair in the state in 1974 amounted to 

8,400,000 pounds. This is the smallest since 1924. The 

1974 production is down 15 per cent below 1973. 

The average price for mohair was $1.37 per pound, this 

is down 50 cents from the 1973 high of $1.87. Total value 

of the 1974 mohair clip is $1 1.5 million, which is down 38 

per cent from the 1973 value 

The number of goats and kids clipped in 1974 was set at 

1,175,000 head, which is a decline of 19 per cent from 

1973. 

SPRINGTIME throughout the state finds crops making 

good progress The winter wheat crop will be harvested in

progress 

Most livestock have been removed from fields where a 

grain crop is expected and many fields in the southern half 

of the state have already headed out. 

Cotton planting for the state is ahead of last year's 

schedule Some replanting was necessary in the coastal bend 

and Lower Rio Grande valley as the result of cutworm and 

wind damage. 

Sorghum planting is about on schedule with last year. 

More than a third of the crop has been seeded. 

Corn planting is more than half completed. Some 

damage has been reported due to high winds, and 

cutworms. 

Sugarbeet seeding is about 50 per cent complete at this 

time. Peanut planting is underway. Peach trees are 

blooming throughout the state, and pecan buds have filled 

out over Texas

and quality of produce. But 

losses can be minimized with 

an effective insect control 

program utilizing both cultural 

and chemical control methods,

county agent with the Texas 

Agricultural Extension Service.

Funeral services for Paul M. 

Woods, 79, of Cisco, were 

held April 26, at Cisco Funeral 

Home Chapel with the Rev. C. 

C. Schultz, pastor of First 

United Methodist Church in 

Cisco, officiating. 

Interment was in Oakwook 

Cemetery. 

He died April 24, at his 

home in Cisco following a 

lengthy illness. 

Born, June 11, 1895, in 

Eastland, he began practice as 

a dentist in Cisco in 1919. 

Survivors include his wife; a 

son, Paul Harlan of Irving; a 

daughter, Mrs. Rose Ann 

Hughston of Midland; a sister, 

Mrs. N. 1. McCollum of 

Haskell and six grandchildren. 

Mrs. Sloan 

Funeral services for Mrs. 

Susie Sloan, 78, of Spur, and 

formerly of Haskell were held 

April 25, in First Baptist 

Church in Spur with the Rev. 

Norris Taylor, pastor, officiating. 

Interment was in Spur 

Cemetery. 

Mrs. Sloan died April 23, in 

Haskell Memorial Hospital 

following a lengthy illness. 

Born October 12, in Haskell 

County, she married George 

Sloan on February 10, 1914, in 

Haskell. They moved to 

Dickens County in 19J7. She 

was a Baptist. 

Survivors include her husband, 

a sister, Mrs. Angic 

Mullino of Haskell; and 

several nieces and nephews.

the Hickman Rest Home in 

Cisco, where Mr. Jones is a 

resident. His two children,

guest list Included all the 

nieces and nephews of this 

remarkable man. Also many 

area friends and the other 

residents of the home. 

Mr. Jones was alert and 

recalled family happenings of 

bygone days. He enjoyed the 

country music furnished by a 

talented group on interesting 

instruments, the catered 

refreshments and was looking 

forward to a game of checkers 

with an old friend after the 

other guests left. The score 

Lillys for his games arc little 

sliding bead counters which 

he made for sale years ago. 

As a young man, Mr. Jones 

raised cattle and sheep on a 

ranch south of San Angclo. 

Later he was with a telephone 

company in Throckmorton 

County and area towns. Now 

he is enjoying the restful fruits 

of a busy useful life. 

Congratulations Mr. Jones, 

May you have more Happy

OBITUARY 

Funeral services for Mrs. 

Oscar (Lillic) Norman, 87, of 

San Angclo and formerly of 

Rule, were held April 26, in 

the First Baptist Church of 

Rule. Rev. Sam Sharp, pastor 

of the First Christian Church 

of Haskell officiated. Burial 

was in the Rule Cemetery. 

Mrs. Norman died April 25th, 

in San Angclo. 

Mrs. Norman was born 

September 4, 1887, in May, 

and had been a Rule resident 

74 years. She married Oscar 

Norman, May 4, 1902, in Rule. 

He preceded her in death in 

1956. 

Survivors include a daughter, 

Mrs. Kathryn Smith of 

San Angclo; a son, Burton of 

Abilene; four grandchildren 

and two sisters, Mrs. Claud 

Ashley of Haskell and Mrs. 

Lonnic Lawson of Seminole.

YOUNG HOMEMAKERS 

The Rule Chapter of Young 

Homemakcrs met April 14, 

with Mrs. J. B. Toncy of 

Sagcrton as guest speaker on 

Africa The topic of Mrs. 

Toncy's talk was the role of 

the African woman in Senegal, 

her purpose in life, her 

religion, her dress and the 

family life. Mr. and Mrs. 

Toncy were residents of Dakar 

of Senegal in West Africa for 

two years. Following the talk, 

questions were asked and 

discussed. 

Hostesses were Mrs. Judy 

New and Mrs. Sherry Fannin. 

GIN SUPPER 

The Rule Cooperative Gin 

held their annual supper and 

stockholders meeting on April 

22, in the Rule School. The 

barbecue meal prepared by 

the junior class served 433 

persons. Following the supper 

a business meeting and 

drawing for door prizes was 

held in the auditorium. 

A. D. May welcomed guests 

and Rev. J. R. Williams led 

the prayer. The auditors 

report was given by Mr. 

Borden Duffle of Abilene. The 

managers report was given by 

Norris Anders and gin 

employees were introduced 

and commended for their 

services. They were; Novis

Baird, Clco Bush, H. R 

Trussell and W. G. May. 

Also in the business meeting, 

the terms of two directors 

expired and they were reelected.

Bobcats entered the Recoil II. 

Class B tr.uk meet held at 

Cen-le- x Stadium at Bioun-wood- , 

April 26. and failed to 

qualify a boy for the state 

meet. Winning the over-al- l 

meet was Cherokee with 56 

points, 2nd was Goree with 44. 

Meridian with 42. Alvord with 

37, Bronte. 30. and Rule and 

Paradise tied for 6th with 20 

points apiece. 

Boys entered in the meet 

were; Steve Anders in the 

high jump and 120 high 

hurdles. Donald Bilbo in the 

330 1 hurdles. Robert Baia 

and Jerry lumlinson in the 

shot, Jimmy Macias in the 

discus. Wcs Kittlcy in the 440, 

Jeff Denson in the broad jump 

and 220, placing 4th in the 

220. The sprint relay team ran 

a 45.8 and placed 4th. They 

were Johnny Menchaca. Charles 

Threet. Jeff Denson and 

Gary Lewis. The mile relay 

team also placed 4th with a 

37.1. They were Gary Lewis. 

Charles Threet. Paul Flores 

and Jeff Denson. 

Rule can well be proud of 

their track team. Each and 

every individual put forth 

every effort to try and all one 

can ask is this. Injuries 

happen and it seems a shame 

that Rule's seem to happen 

between their district and 

regional meet but. Rule has a 

young track team and promise 

of a success season look good 

for next year. We're proud of 

you boy's.

CITY COUNCIL 

At the last city council 

meeting, April 1st, it was 

decided to raise the cost of 

trash hauling by 50c to make a 

total of SI. 50 for that service. 

Trash will now be hauled twice 

a month instead of monthly as 

it has previously been. 

Rule has a new trash truck 

which is being paid for by the 

revenue sharing fund. The 

truck is a trash compactor 

ranger 10 mounted on a ford 

chassis. The loading mechanism 

is low to the ground 

enabling the men to lift 

barrels instead of manually as 

they had previously done. This 

is a greatly improved service

Chairman of Haskell Co. Farm Bureau. 

Part of a group of some 240 Tcxans (county FB leaders and 

some wives and Texas Farm Bureau staff) attending the 

conference, the leaders met with Texas Congressmen, 

Scnntors, and Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz. A group 

question and answer session was held with Texas Senators John 

Tower and Loyd Bcntson. 

A banquet was held for the group which featured American 

Farm Bureau Federation President William J. Kuhfuss and the 

Washington, D. C. AFBF office staff in a discussion of "The 

Washington Situation." 

They saw the usual sights in Washington, including Ford's 

Theater; Capitol building; Supreme Court Building; Library of 

Congress; White House; Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln 

Monuments; Cherry Trees; Smithsonian Museum; National 

Gallery of Art; and Arlington National Cemetery

Some veterans who suffered 

severe disabilities during their 

service in the Armed Forces of 

the United States arc eligible 

for Government financial assistance 

in purchasing a 

personal automobile or other 

conveyance. According to C. 

II. Hcrrcn, Veterans Service 

Officer for Haskell County, 

many veterans are unaware of 

their entitlement to this 

particular benefit from the 

Veterans Administration. 

Eligible for the financial 

assistance are veterans who, 

because of disease or injury 

during military or naval 

service have suffered the loss 

or loss of use of one or more 

limbs, or blindness. A recent 

law, which went into effect on 

February 1, 1975, liberalized 

the eligibility requirements 

and increased the maximum 

amount which the VA can pay 

toward the purchase of an 

automobile. Prior to the recent 

change, a veteran whose dis 

abilities were incurred sliue

of disability. As an example, if 

a veteran has lost an arm, he 

will require power steering to 

safely operate the vehicle. 

Even if a veteran has previously 

used his entitlement 

for the automobile grant, he 

may still be eligible for VA 

assistance to purchase needed

obtains a new vehicle.

Charles Thornhill of Haskell 

was runner-u- p winner of the 

Handicap event during the 

Foye Gatcwood shoot held last 

Saturday and Sunday at the 

Haskell Trap Club. 

Thornhill finished the 

handicap event with a 90x100, 

tied with S. D. Sncll of 

Stanton. Following two shoot-of- f 

rounds, they were still tied 

and Thornhill won the flip of a 

coin for the title. 

Thornhill missed the last 

target in the Class B Singles to 

finish second behind Clyde

The firBt city in the state to apply for 

endorsement by the American Revolution 

Bicentennial Commission (ARBC) of 

Texas was Temple. The Central Texas 

city's application was npproved by the 

Btntc commission on September 5, 1971, 

and since that time scores of communities 

have been similarly endorsed 

Temple and three other cities 

share the honor of being among the first 

cities in the nation to receive nn-.ion-

endorsement of their programs. On 

July 4, 1973, the American Revolution 

Bicentennial Administration (ARBA) in 

Washington, D.C. announced the national 

designation of Temple, San Antonio, San 

Marcos, Lubbock, Baton Rouge and 

Shreveport, La., Charleston, S.C., and 

Lansing, Mich. 

The programs initiated in the first four 

Texas cities continue to be outstanding examples 

of community planning and involvement. 

Lubbock is particularly proud of the 

Ranch Headquarters, an interpretative 

outdoor ranching museum. A Heritage '76 

Bicentennial project, the headquarters 

tells the story of ranching from the Spanish 

era of the 1700'a to the present century. 

The site contains 22 authentic ranch buildings 

moved from their original locations to 

illustrate various periods. 

The Ranch Headquarters will be open to 

he public in 1975 from May to October on 

Sundays from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. Group tours 

at other times can be arranged with the 

Ranch Headquarters staff. 

Another Bicentennial project in the 

West Texas city delves a bit farther into 

hiBtory than the 1700's. The Lubbock Lake 

Site is an archueological site showing evidence 

of 15,000 years of man and his environment. 

As part of the Lubbock Bicentennial 

celebration, an interpretive center 

will be located at the site and the general 

public will be permitted to tour. 

Anyone who might question the celebration 

of the Bicentennial outside of the 13 

original colonies will get a quick answer 

from the people of San Antonio, who re- 

mind us that their city was in existence in 

1718, 58 yenrs before the birth of the nation. 

The San Antonio Bicentennial program 

focuBes on the city's rich heritage, its 

flair for festivities and its future as a 

rapidly growing metropolitan area.

One I Ieritage'76 project is establishment 

of a calendar of eventB for the village ofSon 

Antonio in 1776. The city's famed Farmers 

Market is being restored for the Bicentennial 

as is La Villita, which will be n prime 

tourist attraction, example of Spanish colonial 

architecture and local recreational 

area. 

San Antonio will officially kick off its 

Bicentennial celebration on March 20 with 

a performance by the Bob Hope Show. The 

Hope Show, sponsored by a local savings 

and loan association, will be staged at 

HcmisFair Arena as a salute to the Bicentennial. 

The Bicentennial Committee will 

receive the net proceeds of the show to help 

finance the city's observance of the nation's 

200th birthday. 

The Bicentennial celebration in San 

MarcoB is focused on the scenic San Marcos 

River. The Horizons '76 project, "Beauty 

Along the River," features a lighted trail in 

a naturally landscaped parkland. The one 

and one quarter mile trail unites three 

areas of city parkland. The river walk has 

been funded by local citizens and businesses. 

Two Festival U.S.A. events in San Marcos, 

Rio Roundelay and the Music Along 

the River Festival, incorporate the town's 

scenic Hill Country location and Mexican 

heritage. The Music Along the River Festival 

is held every April 19. Rio Roundelay 

is staged on Flag Day, June 14, the date 

established by the city council in 1972 as 

the day to officially observe the Bicentennial 

in San Marcos. Other events in the city 

include the Chilympiad, Fiesta de San 

Juan and Cinco de Mayo. 

Part of Temple's Bicentennial planning 

focuses on the city's railroading heritage. 

The Santa Fe depot formerly located in 

Moody was moved to Temple in March, 

1973, and is being restored on city property 

to house over 7,000 artifacts of railroading 

life in Temple. 

As a tribute to one of the founders of the 

ld Scott and White Memorial 

Hospital, a hospital museum is being 

created in the log cabin once belonging to 

Dr. A. C. Scott Sr. The cabin Was been restored 

on the hospital grounds and houses 

a collection of Dr. Scott's instruments and 

medical papers. 

Temple residents played an important 

role in the planning of the Bicentennial 

cultural exchange between Texas and 

Guutemala. Initiated in 1973, the exchange 

program has brought artists, dan 

cers and musicians to Texas from the Central 

American country.

young men. Claude Sanders 

won a blue ribbon for his ivy 

and Eugene Sanders won a 

blue ribbon for his cactus at 

the Haskell Garden Club 

Flower Show. These two men 

will also be attending a camp 

for one week in July. They arc
