Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a birth defect identi�ed in 1956 by Swiss doctors A. Prader, H. Willi, and A. Labhart. There are no known 

reasons for the genetic accident that causes this lifelong condition, which a�ects appetite, growth, metabolism, cognitive functioning and 

behavior. Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) was organized in 1975 to provide a resource for education and information about PWS 

and support for families and caregivers. PWSA (USA) is supported solely by memberships and tax-deductible contributions.

programs PWSA (USA) provides to support people and families living 

with PWS. Even in di�cult economic times – and with a reduced 

sta� and budget – PWSA (USA) continues to provide programs 

of excellence in our key mission areas: research, family support, 

and crisis intervention. We are grateful for all those who make

OUR MISSION: Prader-Willi Syndrome Association (USA) is an organization of families 

and professionals working together to raise awareness, o�er support, provide 

education and advocacy, and promote and fund research to enhance the quality of life 

of those a�ected by Prader-Willi syndrome.

CRISIS INTERVENTION PROGRAM 

• The Crisis Program handled 1258 crisis cases in 2010 making this the third year 

In a row of over 1000 crisis contacts during a calendar year. 

• The top �ve reasons people called the Crisis Program in 2010 were: Medical 

(27%), Behavior (14%), Advocacy (12%), School Issues (7.4%) and Legal 

Problems (2.9%). 

• In 2010 PWSA (USA) hired Jeremy Johnson as a Full-Time Crisis Intervention 

Counselor based in the Sarasota O�ce. Kate Beaver continued to serve as the 

Alterman Crisis Counselor and also assumed the role of Team Leader of the 

PWSA (USA) Crisis Team which meets bi-monthly to coordinate crisis program 

response and activities. 

• Utilizing the Willet Crisis Fund in these di�cult economic times to provide PWS 

trainings for schools and residential programs across the country, 

transportation for children and adults needing specialized PWS treatment at 

the Children’s Institute in Pittsburgh for behavioral and health crises, and legal 

consultations for individuals with PWS involved in a legal crisis. 

• Through our popular column in the Gathered View, the Counselors Corner, 

we’ve regularly been able to share important crisis information with our 

members on a variety of topics in 2010.

RESEARCH 2010 

• PWSA (USA) awarded four BIG grants (best ideas for combating the 

hunger/hyperphagia.

• PWSA (USA) sponsored two research fellowships to help assure interest in 

PWS for new researchers. 

• PWSA (USA) Director of Research & Medical A�airs, and various advisory board 

members were actively involved with coordinating and presenting at the 

international PWS conference in Taiwan. 

• PWSA (USA) Director of Research & Medical A�airs continued in the role of cochairing 

the CPAG (Coalition for Patient Advocacy Groups) with the ORDR 

(O�ce of Rare Diseases Research) which includes over 80 rare diseases. It is in 

conjunction with the NIH rare diseases center grant with which PWSA (USA) 

participates. 

• PWSA (USA) has extensive medical data on more than 1,813 children and adults 

with PWS which has been de-identi�ed and shared with members and PWS 

researchers both in the USA and around the world. 

• PWSA (USA) also assists PWS research by recruiting participants for all 

appropriate research projects.

MEDICAL 

• Hospitals, physicians, and parents from all over the world consult with PWSA 

(USA) on medical emergencies and questions daily through phone, fax and email. 

• Provide medical packets and an extensive number of medical booklets and 

DVDs to parents and professionals 

• Sponsored an educational booth on PWS at the American Diabetes 70 th 

Scienti�c Conference attended by 17,000 endocrinologists. 

• Co-sponsored an educational booth with the international PWS organization, 

IPWSO, at the ESPE conference in Prague, Czech Republic which was attended 

by over 3,000 endocrinologists from 91 countries. 

• Created new medical articles and alerts for newsletters and the web site with 

the assistance of PWSA (USA) Clinical and Scienti�c Advisory Boards. 

• Shared the vast amount of medical articles created at PWSA (USA) with over 80 

nations – saving lives around the world. 

FAMILY SUPPORT 

• Chapters, a�liates along with organized support groups around the country 

assist PWSA (USA) with support for new diagnosis and assigning a parent 

mentor to the new family. 

• 287 Parents contacted PWSA (USA) with 88 families being matched with 

mentors in their location. 

• 12 new parent mentors received training materials and have agreed to mentor 

new parents as needed. At the end of 2010 we have 97 parent mentors with 3 

able to help Spanish speaking families. 

CHAPTERS 

• Three new chapters in 2010 (TN, Carolinas, TX). 

• Activecommunications through email (CLE) and telephone. 

• Reports of activities around the country in our newsletter. 

• Advocating for people with PWS was the top priority in 2010 

Massachusetts is working to change eligibility quali�cations for services in 

their state. 


WEBSITE & EMAILS 

• Visitors from 198 countries. 

• 703,212 sum of monthly visitors for 12 months with 8,736 repeat visitors over the 

year. 

• Spanish section – updated and reviewed. 

• Members only – resources– care package, handouts, newsletters. 

• Email support for 1,809 people based on location or age of the person with PWS. 

AWARENESS 

Educating the general public, in addition to our families and professionals working with those 

with PWS, is an important goal for the PWS community because it brings more understanding 

of this complex syndrome, thus opening the door to larger acceptance. A crucial development 

in 2010 was a US Senate Resolution o�cially recognizing Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness 

Month sponsored by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and co-sponsored by Senators Patrick 

Leahy (D-VT) and Benjamin Cardin (D-MD). Both houses in US Congress have now recognized 

May as National PWS Awareness Month, the House resolution having passed in December 2009. 

Media has also been a key to PWS awareness and education. Aside from pockets of 

coverage in local community papers and news channels from events around the 

nation, in 2010 two new hour long shows highlighted PWS. In May, ABC’s Extreme 

Makeover: Home Edition �rst aired a show building a new home for a family who has 

a child with PWS. Singers Miranda Lambert and Cheryl Crowe were on hand to help 

the construction crew and sing a few songs. In November, My Deadly Appetite 

premiered on Discovery Health. The show follows a 14-year-old boy who has PWS. At 

280 pounds, he is in the midst of a major medical crisis that triggers major behavioral 

challenges. Desperate, the parents send him to a facility operating the only comprehensive 

inpatient program for medical, behavioral and rehabilitation management of individuals with 

PWS, where he spends 60 days (description from http://press.discovery.com/us/dhc/

With Congressional resolutions, media attention, and the new Prader-Willi 

Syndrome On The Move campaign, 2010 was a year of increasing awareness of PWS. 

Because of these and other awareness-raising e�orts, more people will understand 

what those with PWS endure, and appreciation for the rami�cations of research on the 

syndrome will continue to grow.

GRASSROOTS 

Active lifestyles are important for the health of those with PWS, and many fundraisers 

that support PWSA (USA) incorporate di�erent forms of motion. ‘Taking swings at 

PWS’, for example, is a common local event theme. For instance, golf swings are 

popular. In July, Clint and Karla Hurdle’s “7 th Annual Golf For Prader-Willi Syndrome in 

Honor of Madison Hurdle,” raised nearly $92,000 net for PWSA (USA) and PWSA CO. 

Dominique DeLeage’s “Putt for PWS” miniature golf event in Virginia is family-friendly 

and has grown over the years. In September, their annual event raised over $12,000. 


“Striking Out PWS Softball Tournament in Honor of Anneke Kramer” continues to 

attract teams of people in Iowa swinging their best in the summer heat. The 2010 

event grossed over $12,700 for PWSA (USA) and the Iowa chapter, while in New York, 

Fran Baehr’s guests kept cool in August throwing di�erent kinds of strikes at “Bowling 

for PWS”, which took in $2,350. 

By pounding the pavement, not one, not two, but eighteen runners in di�erent parts 

of the country ran, collectively, four separate events - the Cowtown Half Marathon in 

Fort Worth, the Dallas Rock and Roll Half Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and the 

Nashville Half Marathon. Together they raised over $14,000 for PWSA (USA). 

A test of patience as well as skill, the 2 nd annual “Casting for a Cause” Fishing 

Tournament in Florida in March produced in no small part by Michelle Torbert, PWSA 

(USA) Board member, parent to a child who has PWS and president of Prader-Willi 

Florida Association (PWFA), was a popular weekend event which “netted” $30,000 for 

PWSA (USA) and another $10,000 for PWFA. 

No less than 50 grassroots fundraisers occur in any 

given year in support of PWSA (USA)! Some do not 

incorporate motion, but many do. With this in mind, in 

2010 a team made up of Association Board Members and 

development sta� began planning a new initiative that 

focuses on the importance of healthy living so critical to 

our population while at the same time spotlighting 

PWSA (USA)’s forward thinking and progress in dealing 

with issues related to the syndrome. Named Prader- 

Willi Syndrome On The Move, the campaign is aimed to 

become a signature event for PWSA (USA). It is designed 

so that events across the country concentrated during May PWS Awareness Month, 

will carry with them a common identity for our shared purpose. The ultimate goal is to 

raise awareness about PWS among the general public as well as to raise funds that 

support the services, resources and research which are at the core of the PWSA (USA) 

mission. 

The familiar title of a popular book reminds us that “It takes a village to raise a child.” 

So too, it is because of the energy, commitment and generosity of our “village” all 

across this country that PWSA (USA) is able to continue reaching toward the collective 

vision of enhancing the quality of life of all those a�ected by Prader-Willi syndrome.

‘thank you.’” parent, Judy Crespi, who planned a dress down day at work in support of 

PWSA (USA).
