Why listen to Rock Music?
Rock music is usually described as being hard, edgy music made using
electric guitars, drums, and bass. Rock traces back to the 1940’s when
the popular genres were country and jazz, whose sound completely
changed by incorporating the electric guitar and a loud drum beat. By
the 1970’s, rock music became the most preferred type of music and
became mainstream. Today, however, rock music can sometimes be
overshadowed by the cookie cutter mainstream pop music that you hear
on every radio station and see on every music chart. Even though rock
music sometimes gets a bad rap, there are still many people who love
and still enjoy a good rock song. These are the reasons to listen to rock
music. Believe it or not, rock music can suit anyone’s taste. There are
numerous different variations of the genre that it is almost impossible
to find two bands or artists that sound alike, and that is rare with
today’s most common songs. Today, every popular song has the same
beat and repetitive lyrics. One of the most versatile rock bands of all
time has to be the legendary Beatles. The Beatles touched on more than
five different genres with their music. Some of their most versatile songs
are ‘Slow Down,’ ‘Within You,’ and ‘Helter Skelter.’ The ability to
incorporate different sounds and genres in one song can’t really be
executed with any other genre the way it can be with rock music.
The Beatles
The Beatles were not just some band, they are arguably the best and most
influential rock band of all time. You have to go all the way back to March
1957 if you want to look at the start of The Beatles. The group was called the
Blackjacks back then, a skiffle group formed by a then 16-year-old John
Lennon. The group changed its name to the Quarrymen. Paul McCartney
joined the group as a rhythm guitarist in July and they were joined by George
Harrison in March 1958. George Martin signed the Beatles to EMI’s
Parlophone label and the rest, as they say, is history. Abbey Road Studios was
the venue for the Beatles’ first recording session and it was here that Best’s
drumming came under scrutiny. Best was replaced by a session drummer who
in turn was replaced by Ringo Starr in August 1962. This foursome would
stay as the Beatles as long as the band were active. Ten songs were recorded
by the Beatles on February 11, 1963 and the debut LP, Please Please Me was
ready to release to the world. The debut single “Love Me Do” was moderately
successful, however, “Please Please Me” was swallowed up by British music
lovers and it reached number one in all but one of London’s chart.
Beatlemania was about to happen.
The Rolling Stones
Mick Jagger and Keith Richards go a long way back. They knew each other
since their childhood days and then met again one day on a train. Mick was
carrying some records, and Keith was excited about the fact that they shared
the same interest in rock music. Then, Brian Jones joined them to put together
the original lineup of the Rolling Stones. Back in 1963, they had a small gig at
the Crawdaddy Club, where they made some of their first fans, including four
guys from Liverpool called George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and
Ringo Starr who were The Beatles. Harrison took them under their wing and
introduced them to Andrew Loog Oldham, their manager, including Bill Wyman,
Ian Stewart, and Charlie Watts to their band to record Come On by Chuck
Berry, their first single. The Stones had it all. They were strong, loud,
charismatic, and they were really good. Performing rockabilly, blues and rock
and roll covers, it was just a matter of time before they took off. Also, they were
the first people in the industry to not care about fashion at all, and for some
reason, that drove girls crazy. So, Oldham started promoting them as the “anti-
Beatles” and put together several old recordings on their first LP, but it wasn’t
until they released “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” in 1965 that they truly
became the Stones.
Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group
consisted of vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist/keyboardist John
Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. With a heavy, guitar-driven sound, they
are cited as one of the progenitors of hard rock and heavy metal, although their
style drew from a variety of influences, including blues and folk music. Led
Zeppelin have been credited as significantly impacting the nature of the music
industry, particularly in the development of album-oriented rock (AOR) and
stadium rock. Many critics consider Led Zeppelin one of the most successful,
innovative and influential rock groups in history. Originally named the New
Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin's deal with Atlantic Records gave them considerable
artistic freedom. Initially unpopular with critics, they achieved significant
commercial success with eight studio albums over ten years. Their 1969 debut,
Led Zeppelin, was a top-ten album in several countries and featured such tracks as
"Good Times Bad Times", "Dazed and Confused". Led Zeppelin II was their first
number-one album, and yielded "Heartbreaker" and "Whole Lotta Love". In 1970
they released Led Zeppelin III which featured "Immigrant Song". Their untitled
fourth album, commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, is one of the best-selling
albums in history with 37 million copies sold. The album includes, "Rock and Roll"
and "Stairway to Heaven". Physical Graffiti, a double album, featured "Trampled
Under Foot" and "Kashmir".
The Doors
The Doors were an American rock band formed in Los Angeles in 1965, with
vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and
drummer John Densmore. They were among the most controversial and
influential rock acts of the 1960s; mostly due to Morrison's lyrics and voice,
along with his erratic stage persona, and the group was widely regarded as an
important part of the era's counterculture. The band took its name from the
title of Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception, itself a reference to a
quote by William Blake. After signing with Elektra Records, the Doors with
Morrison released six albums in five years, some of which are considered among
the greatest of all time, including The Doors ,Strange Days ,and L.A. Woman.
They were one of the most successful bands during that time and by 1972 the
Doors had sold over 4 million albums domestically and nearly 8 million singles.
Morrison died in uncertain circumstances in 1971. The band continued as a trio
until disbanding in 1973. They released three more albums in the 1970s, two of
which featured earlier recordings by Morrison, and over the decades reunited on
stage in various configurations. In 2002, Manzarek, Krieger and Ian Astbury of
the Cult on vocals started performing as "The Doors of the 21st Century".
Densmore and the Morrison estate successfully sued them over the use of the
band's name. After a short time as Riders on the Storm, they settled on the
name Manzarek–Krieger and toured until Manzarek's death in 2013.
