Welcome to the Flemish ParliamentIn 1995 the Flemish people elected theirown parliament for the first time. A milestonein the evolution of Flanders into anautonomous federated state within federalBelgium. A year later, Flemish MPs movedinto their own parliament building.The glass dome that spans the hemicycleis the most recognisable element of ourFlemish Parliament. It symbolises theconnectedness - everyone should feel athome under this roof - but also theopenness, the transparency of this house.Because you have a right to see what happenshere. The people you elected havetheir workplace here and give you a voicehere.This brochure is an introduction to theworking of the Flemish Parliament. Parliamentis a forum of democracy: the placewhere the people who represent youdebate and make decisions. Parliamentalso monitors the functioning of theGovernment of Flanders and approves thebudget.As Speaker of the Flemish Parliament, Iam in favour of passionate, ideologicaldebate. With differences of opinion, criticalquestions, strong arguments for andagainst, but always with respect for eachother’s convictions.It is important that you, as a citizen, stayinformed about what is happening in theFlemish Parliament. After all, you want toknow if those you elected are doing a goodjob. Therefore, I invite you to attend a meetingin this open house yourself. Or youcan just take a look inside the building,after the interactive trail through our visitorcentre. You will be kept informed ofthis Parliament’s activities through thevarious (social) media channels. You canfollow the plenary sessions and committeemeetings on vlaamsparlement.tv.Our current affairs and debate programmescover all the topical subjects andissues.The Flemish Parliament aims to stimulateand contribute to the dialogue betweenMPs and citizens.
