WELCOME...
Gracing our cover this week is
the seasoned and charismatic
actress and Filmmaker, Dr.
Eucharia Anunobi! Anunobi who
shot into stardom after her daring
delivery of erotic scenes in
Glamour Girls 2, in 2006, that
earned her being dubbed the
Sharon Stone, of Nollywood, last
Sunday, bagged a PhD in
Christian Education and
Ministerial Art from Kingdom Life Bible College
International, Lagos, Nigeria, joining the league of
Creatives like Helen Paul who made history as the first
Nigerian comedian to reach such academic height and
Kafayat Shafau-Ameh aka Kaffy, who was awarded
Honourary Doctorate degree by Escae Benin University
in the Republic of Benin as a “pioneer in the business of
dance in Africa.”
Dr. Anunobari’s achievement and others before her
are debunking old perceptions that the creative industry
is for the never-do--wells. Her achievement is even
more significant as she leads a new generation of
women who are taking their craft and calling seriously,
and holding the touch light for others to follow.
But why do cynics think the movie industry is too
worldly a place for a soul winner to function in?
The preacher, soul winner and actress bares it all to
Stylish Ways
to wear Velvet
FASHION
by - Tope Ojo
Velvet is a classic fabric that instantly gives off an air of
elegance and can dress up even the simplest of outfits. It is
one of the few fabrics that is both comfortable but can also add
instant glamour to your outfit.
Need some ideas for looking stylish while wearing velvet?
Here are a few tips on how to style the velvet trend.
Since velvet is a
visually heavy fabric,
pair it with more
delicate fabrics for
balance. Wear a skirt
with a nice sparkly
cropped lacw top
paired with strappy
low heels to give
the look a nice
touch. Finally,
accessorise
with a
shoulder bag
to complete
the
ensemble.
Pair a velvet blazer with
a clean, crisp white
shirt and some classic
black jeans. Add a pop
of height with a heel for
that casual outing.
Accessories are probably
the easiest way to make
a simple and easy
fashion statement. Add a
luxury feel to your look if
you’re not ready for a full
velvet look.
Opt for something a
little longer for a
sophisticated
ladylike look, or
dress down by
pairing your short
velvet dress with a
blazer for a dinner
outing.
INTERVIEW
Eucharia Anunobi:
For Gospel & Screen
Words By - Rita Okoye
Eucharia Anunobi is a veteran Nollywood actress who came into limelight after featuring in
multiple, award-winning movie, Glamour Girls 2 (1996). The charismatic actress whose
conversion to Christ took the industry by storm some years ago, has been in the business of
making movies and winning souls for Christ.
Eucharia Anunobi who holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Pastoral Leadership from Redeemer’s
International Leadership Academy, last Sunday, added a feather to her already decorated hat,
when she bagged a PhD in Christian Education and Ministerial Art from Kingdom Life Bible
College International, Lagos, Nigeria.
In this interview, Dr. Eucharia Anunobi, Filmmaker, actress and Minister of God, takes us
through her world, touching on challenging moments as a Minister of God.
Excerpts;
What inspired you to broaden your knowledge in
bible school?
I was inspired by the fact that, in life, you need to
keep honing your skills, improving yourself and
evolving so you can remain relevant and be able to
weather the storm, and whatever life throws at you. If
life throws you lime, you’ll make lemonade, if it throws
you orange, you make orange juice.
Now, a PhD holder, what is expected of you?
I am expected to do more, educating my
generation, to see things better, upgrade themselves,
and to ensure that I contribute my quota in the
educational system. I can become a visiting lecturer or
a full-time lecturer in any University of my choice, within
or outside Nigeria.
Many people believe filmmaking is worldly and
Ministers of God should not be involved in it. How
do you balance the two?
Well, it is an unfortunate thing that a lot of people
believe filmmaking is worldly and Ministers of God
should not be involved. I want to say, first and foremost,
everything about the world we live in is worldly!
Everything that we see upon the face of the earth came
from God. But people began to digress and to do
things that do not glorify God. Be that as it may,
filmmaking is a mighty platform through which the
gospel can be preached. So, I think it’s a wrong notion
for people to think and believe that filmmaking is
worldly.
In the book of Genesis chapter one, in the
beginning, “the earth was without form and void.” So,
out of all these things that didn’t make sense, that were
unbefitting, that had darkness, that ordinarily didn’t look
like you’d see something good out of it, God’s spirit,
intellect, essence, moved over these things and began
to make something out of it. So, invariably, some part of
the film industry may be worldly as it were, but that is not
a reason why Ministers of God should not be involved.
Filmmaking can be used mightily to propagate the
gospel of God so that those who cannot read the Bible,
can watch it and understand it.
Misconceptions about the Holy Bible can be cleared
when the word of God is translated and put in film
format. So, filmmaking is a medium that Ministers of
God should embrace, to propagate the gospel, so that
the layman can understand by just watching it. There is
absolutely nothing wrong with the Ministers of God,
Pastors, Bishops, Apostles like myself, Doctors like
myself getting involved in acting or making films. film
making. Let us not forget, God makes something out of
the seemingly unbefitting things. So, while others may
be worldly in whatever they are doing, as Ministers of
the gospel, let’s distinguish ourselves and be different.
A movie set is often a complicated setting where
clashes of egos, anger and other excesses by cast
and crew are likely to happen. In the light of your
new reality as an Evangelist, how do you now
handle such excesses from others compared to
how you handled such in the past?
Well, to the glory of God, it’s been 10 years since I
was ordained. So, it is not a new reality anymore. But I
have the spirit of truth, the spirit of love, which comes
from having our minds renewed. So, in such cases, no
matter what is happening, we are meant to exhibit the
fruit of the spirit and try to broker peace.
How have you been using films as a tool for
evangelism?
Producers who write scripts that are faith-based call
me to act in most of them. That has been a means of
propagating the gospel. That way, people can watch the
movie and have the gospel broken down for them in
pictures. Apart from that, our daily lifestyle, my daily
lifestyle of showing love, of forgiving quickly, of trying to
make amends, of trying to be more understanding, of
apologizing quickly when you have done wrong; all
these are ways of evangelizing.
What has been some of your challenging moments
as a Minister of God, actress and filmmaker?
One such challenge is when people assume that as
an actress or filmmaker, you cannot also be a prophet or
a vessel for God to use to bless people. I want to say to
the glory of God, I’m bringing a change in the narrative. I
am becoming a trailblazer to changing the dynamics of
how people see artistes, actresses or filmmakers. I am
changing the narrative for them to see that yes, one can
be an actress or a filmmaker, and can also be a great
vessel of honour. If you studiously fine tune yourself and
lay yourself at the feet of God, hear from Him, live
according to His principles, be a great minister of the
gospel, over time, people will now learn to know and see
that there is no area of life in terms of career or
profession that God cannot use. There are doctors,
teachers, engineers who are Pastors. So, who said and
who is saying that an actress, actor or filmmaker cannot
also be a pastor? Be that as it may, if that has been the
mindset of people, well, God is saying that I’m changing
the dynamics and narrative through my daughter,
Apostle-Doctor Eucharia Anunobi.
As an actress, you are expected to be able to
interpret any role. What are the roles you would
rather not take now because of your status as a
Minister in the church?
Well, as an actress, I’m supposed to interpret every
role that is assigned to me because if one decides not to
do the job, some other actor will take on the job.
However, as an Apostle, even others who don’t have
that title or status, there are some roles they would not
take. So, as much as I would act in every role as long as
it’s going to give out a message of reconciliation and
INTERVIEW
informing the people, roles that have to do with me
drinking alcohol, I may not take. Also, any other role that
would require undue exposure of the body, I would not
want to partake of it because even prior to when I
became born again, and before I got ordained, I also
didn’t take on roles where there was an unnecessary
exposure of the body.
What guides the type of roles you accept?
I must ensure it has a good storyline and that the
story and the roles have a message to pass to the
audience because two major things expected of any
movie is that it should be entertaining and it should be
educating. So, these are the things I watch out for
before I accept any role.
Since being ordained as an Evangelist, are there
new insights you have gained about life and your
profession?
Well, before and after ordination, to the glory of God,
I’ve always had a very intimate relationship with God. It
is through this intimate relationship that I understand that
in life, for you to make it, for you to rise, for you to know
what you want, you need to be close to God and have
fellowship with Him. It is in the closeness and fellowship
with God that I got to understand that whatever you do
and do very well, it will bring you before kings.
Generally, when a person gives his or her life to God,
the eyes of wisdom opens unto you, and it helps you to
know how to talk and make right career decisions. It
helps you in practically every area of your life.
You are one of the veterans of Nollywood that is still
active in the industry today. What are the changes
you will like to see?
I’d like to see us paid better. I also would want more
financiers to come into the industry because; this is an
industry that needs money for it to operate. Sponsors
should come in, the government should enact laws to
protect the literary contents of producers and the writers.
Government should put structures in place that would
give us an enabling environment to function, to produce
the movies and above all, to ensure that persons who
have laboured ceaselessly in the industry are truly
honoured.
Will you consider giving marriage another shot?
Sure. I would like to get married. I’m looking forward
to getting married. I believe it will happen in the fullness
of time because God has already said that it is not good
for a man to be alone. I’m single and looking. So, if you
have anybody who loves or likes me, and feels that I’m
the woman of his dreams, please bring him.
What do you look out for in a potential suitor?
The Bible says, “do not be unequally yoked with the
unbelievers”, darkness cannot mix with light. You cannot
be someone who likes music and want to be with
someone who doesn’t like music, it will not work. You
have to complement each other. As an academician, I
would also want someone educated and enlightened.
Someone who has an open mindset, someone who
loves education and knowledge as much as I do, and
who is romantic. He should have the fear of God, and
hold the things of God sacred, has the consciousness of
heaven and lastly, someone who has a mind of his own,
who would respect me and who loves humanity like I
do.
You have held your own as a fashionable actress.
How would you describe your style?
Thank you for the compliment. Well, my style is
about class and elegance. I love my clothes to be fitting,
nice, comfortable and classy. I do not wear things
because people are wearing them. I create my style to
suit my personality. Let me give an insight; because I
am a preacher who is always on the go, if I have to be
on the altar, I will not want to have hairstyles that have
strands flying all over the places. So, I’ve created the
unique afro hair style that everybody now knows as my
style.
For me, it’s convenient and it doesn’t get in the way.
My style doesn’t necessarily have to be what’s in vogue
because what is in vogue today, may not be in vogue
tomorrow. My style is about wearing what flatters my
body.
How do you relax?
I relax by reading, dancing. I also relax by doing
exercises, watching people, and meditating.
Where is your favourite relaxation location?
My favourite relaxation location is America; on the
beach and walking through the parks.
Am changing
the narrative
for them to
see that yes,
one can be an
actress or a
filmmaker,
and can also
be a great
vessel of
honour.
TEACH THAT CHILD WAYS
TO PREVENT SEXUAL ABUSE (2)
Be sure to tell your ward
that body secrets are not
okay - Note that predators will tell the
child to keep the abuse a secret. They
do this in a friendly way such as, “I love
playing with you, but if you tell anyone else what we
played, they won’t let me come over again.” It can be
a threat: “This is our secret. If you tell anyone I will tell
them it was your idea and you will get in big trouble.”
Let your child that he or she cannot be bullied. No
matter what anyone says, they should always tell
daddy and mummy.
Tell your child that nobody is allowed
to snap photos of their private parts
- Most parents sometimes miss out on this vital
information. There are a lot of sick pedophiles who
take pleasure in snapping and trading pictures of
naked children online. This evil epidemic actually
puts your child at risk. So, tell your kids that no one
should ever take photographs of their private parts.
Arm your child with knowledge on how
to get out of uncomfortable
situations - A number of kids don’t feel
comfortable enough telling people “NO,” most
especially older peers or adults. Get them to
understand that it’s okay to tell an adult ‘no’ and that they
can leave if something that feels wrong is happening. Give
them words to get out of such uncomfortable situations by
telling your child that if someone wants to see or touch his
or her private parts, they can give the excuse of using the
toilet to take their leave.
Give a code word to your children to use
when they feel unsafe or want to
be picked up - As they get a little bit older,
empower them with a code word that they can
use when they are feeling unsafe. That can
come in handy at home when there are guests
in the house, or when they are on a play date or
a sleepover.
Explain to your child that a body
touch might tickle or feel good
- “Good touch and bad touch,” this can be
confusing because these touches do not hurt or
feel bad most times. It’s better to use the term
“secret touch” as it is the best depiction of what
may occur.
Tell your child that the above
rules apply also to those people
they know and including other
children. It’s true the above may not
absolutely stop sexual abuse but knowledge is a
powerful deterrent especially with young ones
who are prime victims due to their innocence
and ignorance in this field. The abusers commit
this heinous act against the more defenseless
members of our society, and they tend to
disguise themselves as harmless and caring
people most times.
They interact with your kids as baby-sitters,
house-helps, drivers, teachers, youth leaders,
Pastors, Alfas, doctors, nurses, neigbours,
friends, relatives and have a common trait, their
ability to earn the trust and love of the victims
they attack. Try finding natural time to sink these
messages home such as bath time or when they
are running around naked.
Spend time with your children where they can
have your undivided attention, and let them
know that they can ask you any question. This
can help to make warning signs of child sexual
abuse more obvious including, helping the kid
feel at ease coming to you if something is wrong.
Please when these children come to you, follow
through on your promise and avoid punishing
them when they speak up; instead, take actions
to protect your child. Never too late to start
talking around these topics just in case you are
yet to give it a shot.
CREATE A ROMANTIC
LIVING ROOM ON A
BUDGET
There are inexpensive ways to make your home romantic on a budget,
here are a few tips.
Take Out the Unnecessary: Clutter is the exact opposite of making
your home romantic. There is no way you can
create a warm and cozy environment if your
house is full of clutter.
So, the first thing you need to do to make
your home romantic and peaceful is to
declutter.
6
/ June 6, 2021
DECLUTTER
Have a Cleaning Routine: Why is
this important? The answer is very
simple, I know you want your home to be
more than a place you go to sleep at
night. You want it to be a refuge of sorts.
A place you can go to relax from the
stress of the outside world, but the truth
is, you can’t relax in your home or any
home, if it doesn’t have some sort of
order and cleanliness.
Get Organized: After decluttering
and creating a regular cleaning schedule,
organizing key areas of your home is one
of the best things you can do to make
your home cozy on a budget.
However, when you’re in an orderly space
there’s a feeling of tranquility. After all, this
is what making your home feel romantic
and inviting is all about.
Use Scented Candles: Creating a
home environment that invites you in with
that warm and cozy vibe is as dependent
upon the smells in your home as the way
it looks. Scents trigger past memories of
positive feelings.
You can add scents to your home with
scented candles or essential oil diffusers.
But if you are not a fan of scents, you can
go for natural fragrances.
It doesn’t get much simpler than that! So
go ahead and make your home cozy by
adding in some of your favourite scents.
Bronzer
Bronzer is magical. It works
wonders in making you look
well-rested. Use it year-round for
a healthy-looking glow. It should
be used very sparingly on the high
planes of your face, where the sun
would naturally hit you, for an
instant glow.
BEAUTY
6
Essentials
For A Quick
Makeup
Fix
Makeup
Wipes
Make-up wipes are absolutely
eMake-up wipes are absolutely
essential for any makeup bag. While
we love to have these at home to
use to clean off eye makeup before
a proper cleansing at the end of
the night, they’re super convenient
to have on hand during the day.
Makeup wipes can help remove any
smudges that may occur during the
day. If you need a quick refresher,
a swipe of a makeup wipe can help
remove oil and product build-up,
leaving skin feeling clean without
stress.
Look for wipes that are safe for use
around the eye area and be gentle
when using. There is no need for
scrubbing when using a makeup
wipe, just wipe gently for better
results.
Lipgloss
Last but not least, if you love shiny lips,
a pretty gloss will complete your makeup
wardrobe. It looks pretty on everyone and
is easy to apply without a mirror or lip liner.
Just pop it on.
Concealer
A concealer is a great addition to
a makeup bag because it has so
many uses. For instance, if you
have dark circles, dab on some
concealer underneath the eyes to
make you look more awake. For
a pimple, apply a thin coat of
concealer to tone down the
affected area. Concealer is
particularly useful because
it can be used effectively to
spot-treat areas, rather than
re-apply an entirely new face
of makeup. Concealer
often comes
in small tubes
and is easy
to apply.
Look for
one that
matches
your skin
colour.
Tinted Lip
Balm
One of the worst feelings is having
dry skin, especially chapped lips. A
tinted lip balm is a great option to
have on hand in your makeup bag.
They come in a variety of colours
and some can stand in as lipstick.
Because it is a balm, it will provide
the much-needed moisture for
your lips, while also adding a bit of
shine and colour. Tinted lip balms
are a great option for on-the-go
because it save you the stress of
always reapplying your lipstick,
yet provides the medicinal benefits
of a lip balm.
Have you ever been out and about and
needed a quick makeup fix? Have you
also, ever wanted to prune down your
makeup bag to essentials that you can
use anywhere? Whether you’re an
on-the-go type of girl, or just need a
quick makeup refresh that won’t take
much time, there are some essentials
to have on hand in your makeup bag, to
quickly freshen up your look and
continue looking fabulous all day.
The best part is that, these top essential
items can fit any budget, while taking
up very little space in your bag.
Mascara
A true makeup
essential.
Mascara and a
good lash curler
are magical in
making you look
more awake
and youthful
in a matter
of seconds. It
should never be
found missing
in your makeup
bag.
the real events of that historic election and the
dramatis personae, has been presented to the
media in Lagos.
Written by business mogul, politician and
close ally of Chief MK.O. Abiola, Chief Abimbola
Moyosore Aboderin, the 285-page book,
Democracy And The Untold Story of June 12, is
aimed at setting “the records of what transpired
before, during and after the historic June 12
straight.”
Chief Aboderin noted that although several
books have been written on the June 12
election, his book is different because it is written
from the perspective of an insider, and one of the
three people who worked closely with late Chief
MKO Abiola on the June 12 project. Others he
listed include; Oloye Bola Ajibola, Alhaji Lamidi
Adedibu, and Alhaji Alao Arisekola.
He described the late Abiola as a very kind
man whose sole desire was to eradicate poverty
amongst Nigerians having suffered deprivation
himself. He added that one of lessons from
the book is to ensure that incidence like the
annulment of a free and fair election such as that
of June 12, does not happen again in the history
of Nigeria.
While commending President Buhari for
declaring June 12 every year as
Democracy Day, he asured that
this book “will not only be of help to
politicians, but youths, government
and officials, business class and those
aspiring for future leadership positions.”
Democracy And The Untold Story of
June 12 will be officially launched on
June 12 in Lagos.
Showcasing the continent’s talent pipeline,
Forbes Africa on Tuesday, released its special
June and July issue, featuring Africans under
the age of 30 who are innovative entrepreneurs,
tech geeks, sports stars and influential creatives
leading a pandemic-hit Africa.
This year’s list marks a historic turn as many
businesses and brands were adversely affected
by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Ifan took to Instagram to share the news.
“What a precious dream, we go global!
Forbes 30 Under 30 was merely a pipe dream
of mine years ago. To be living this reality feels
significantly different for me; this common
10-year-old boy who didn’t have the luxury to
have a formal education, slept under bridges and
begged on the streets of Lagos. My life’s journey
with its roads and accommodations (whether
good or bad) has been in stages. And at every
stage, I’ve always found myself dreaming of
something that seemed far reaching or plainly
impossible to achieve.
“Frankly, I wanted to be on Forbes 30 Under
30 list for one reason and one reason alone: to
represent people like me, the nobodies in our
society. People who life dealt a bad hand from
their childhood but they kept dreaming. People
who have felt hopelessness and helplessness
but they never gave up. I’m immensely proud
and grateful to have made the Forbes 30 Under
30 class of 2021. I owe this to God Almighty, I’m
extremely thankful to Him for bringing me thus
far.”
Ifan joins the likes of Mr. Eazi, Davido, WizKid
and Burna Boy who had previously made the list.
