Enjoy your Visit to
Cork & Kerry
We hope you have a wonderful time in Cork & Kerry.
To help you make the most of your trip, this Daily Adventure Visitor Guide
features the Region’s top attractions, activities and experiences. When you
find something special, tell us about it and you could win an amazing holiday
stay in a lighthouse (see page 2).
For now, because Covid-19 is still with us, we have some important advice and useful tips to
share, so that you are never disappointed.
Essential Travel Advice
OPEN DATES AND TIMES:
Open dates and times may be subject to change,
particularly at this time, and can vary throughout
the seasons and day of week. Businesses
indicating ‘Open Year-Round’ often close at
certain times, for example, during Christmas
time. Therefore, we strongly recommend that
you check dates and times in advance of
travel, close to the date of your planned visit –
particularly if you are travelling distances. You
should do this by checking the website of the
attraction, activity or experience of interest - or
give them a call to get the latest information.
CORE OPERATING TIMES:
The core operating times for many tourism
businesses are typically between 10:00 and
17:00h, with the last entry one hour or more
before closing. Many also operate extended
operating times during the high season when
there are more hours of daylight. It is always best
to check their times in advance of visiting.
ATTRACTION FEATURES
MAY NOT ALWAYS BE OPEN:
Some features within attractions and activities
may not be available to experience at this time.
Some may be temporarily closed to comply with
social distancing guidelines or for other reasons.
Again, checking online is essential.
BOOKING REQUIREMENTS:
Many attractions, activities, and entertainments,
require advance booking for tours and visits.
Some entertainments and activities also operate
subject to demand. You should always check to
see if booking is required.
COVID-19 - STAY SAFE:
On your travels, stay safe. Please remember to
follow all public health advice. Always distance
yourself at least 2 meters (6 feet) from other
people. Wear face coverings, covering your
mouth and nose, when in proximity to others.
Wash your hands well and frequently.
Explore Elizabeth Fort, one of the oldest upstanding
structures in Cork City which has been in use for more than
400 years.
This 17th century star-shaped fort built in the aftermath
of the Battle of Kinsale (1601), served to reinforce English
dominance and protect the walled city of Cork below. It has
served many functions during its lifetime, including use as
a military barracks, a convict depot for the transportation of
women prisoners, a food depot during The Great Famine—a
time referred to as ‘The Emergency’ in Ireland. It was also
used as an RIC station and, until 2013, a Garda station.
A visit to the fort offers panoramic views of the city and photo
opportunities with the various displays bringing life to the fort
including an air-raid shelter.
Deeply imbedded into Cork’s colourful history, a guided tour
is recommended to hear about the Fort’s vibrant past and
listen to some of the many stories that emanate from its walls.
A visit to Elizabeth Fort should be on everyone’s bucket list. A
wonderful hidden gem in the heart of beautiful Cork City.
Free entry, with guided tour €3 and guidemaps available.
NEW EXHIBITION
‘WALLS, WOMEN,
WATER’
A wonderful new exhibition tells the stories of the
lives and times that have impacted on the fort – and
of Cork – through maps, images and text. It also
recounts the tragic story of 150 female convicts and
their children who lost their lives on the ill-fated ship,
‘The Neva’.
ARDFERT CATHEDRAL
Tralee, Co. Kerry
Steep yourself in history
Founded by St. Brendan in the 6th century, there are three
churches, two ogham stones and early Christian and medieval
grave slabs on the site.
The earliest building is the Cathedral which dates from the 12th
to the 19th centuries. It has a fine Romanesque west doorway, a
13th century east window and a row of nine lancets in the south
wall.
Two effigies of ecclesiastical figures of late 13th to 14th century
are on view in the South Transept. One of the smaller churches is
an example of late Romanesque and the other, Temple na Griffin,
is a 15th century structure.
