يحكى أن الجد كان راكبا بغلته عائدا إلى البيت. وجد
كلبا كاد يموت قريبا من بئر. كان الحيوان المسكين عطشانا.
استعمل الجد عمامته ليصل إلى الماء. عصر العمامة في فم
الكلب ليروي ظمأه. ثم أعطاه شيئا يأكله.
ركب بغلته متجها نحو البيت. تبعه الكلب بخجل.
"هيا" قال الجد.
جرى الكلب فرحا. فجأة وقفت البغلة. كان في الطريق ثعبان
مهدد. حاول الجد أن يهدئ البغلة. نبح الكلب على الثعبان
بشجاعة. اختفى الزاحف السام بين الشجيرات. أبدى الكلب فخرا
وهو ينظر إلى الجد الذي نظر إلى السماء مبتسما.
أحس بالعطف على الكلب بادئ األمر، لكنه اآلن أحبه. حصل
على جزاء فضله.
