This Book Was Written ?
You know sometime things happen just like that- in an
amusingly strange way. The credit for getting- my
knowledge, practical experience on the subject matter

chapter.

The movie scene propelled me to put into action my
hunches, dreams & hopes to write the book on the subject
& principles which I have been practicing religiously in
every project of mine as well as clients’ for all these years
knowingly & unknowingly.
The Other reason why I wrote this book is the
plights I empathize with, of millions of Business owners
who unfortunately undermine the importance of a “Catchy
Name” for their business or product & foolishly spend huge
amount on advertising & marketing trying to establish
themselves in market or compete with smarter guy who
knows & practices the “Power of Name” & finally fail
miserably, shutting down their businesses, going bankrupt
sometimes.

INTRODUCTION
Introduction
So, When one of the original founder brother Dick
McDonald asked Ray Kroc the new owner of McDonald’s
Business that why he did not just steal or copy the whole
business system including process, quality & everything they
shown him during the kitchen tour at their restaurant & open
his own restaurant?
Ray Kroc replied with a smile & surprise answer of
which even the original founders were not aware & did not
bother much for it’s protection.
He told Dick that their business is not just the speedy
& efficient system of fast food serving but the glorious
powerful name McDonald’s…Which sound like America --a
whole BIG Powerful Country.
The McDonald brethren did not bother to protect their
famous restaurant chain’s Brand Name with Trademark &
Word Mark, which was first acquired by Ray Kroc & they lost
it.
And armored with this powerful name Ray Kroc was
able to build an empire which is now one of the top ten most
valuable U.S. brands based on company value, with its brand
value of 143.8 billion U.S. dollars in year 2020. (Source :

THE POWER OF
NAME
THE POWER OF NAME
{1}
The Name alone has enormous power in
an overcommunicated society.
“Brand Positioning” has been considered as the best strategy
in Marketing & brand development for last 40 years or so.
The concept was first introduced by Marketing
Strategy geniuses duo- Al Ries & Jack Trout in early 1980s.
Since then it has been a guiding principle for Marketers, Big
Advertising Agencies & Business Owners.
In their famous book
with same name: POSITIONING-
The battle for your Mind” they
elaborate further that-in this
overcommunicated society
with humongous noise from
advertisers everywhere .
The most important marketing
decision you can make is
What to name your Brand
( Product / Company or both).
Positioning your brand in powerful
way has been a herculean task &
very few seem to know the art to
overcome this big hurdle.

THE POWER OF NAME
The Power of Name
You see, how much ad content in the form of Adverts
on TV, FM Radio, Social Media & across internet you are
consuming.
Every player is out in the market to gamble
whatever is in his pocket to win the hearts & get heard by the
potential customers. Most of them cluelessly waste their
money on advertising & marketing & get nothing & return to
their bunkers empty handed.
And this is so overwhelming that now people don’t
bother to these ads, until something come out of the blue
which catches their attention in first attempt.

The Power of Name
Name is the Point of Contact Between the
Message & Customer’s Mind.
A good & interesting name will invoke positive feeling &
interest which will lead to generate a favorable perception in
the mind of prospective customer; while a bad or improper
name will start a chain reaction that only serves to confirm
your initial unfavorable opinion for the brand.
Why, So? Because - “

4. Peculiar Words
Although name that resembles your business is a
good choice to draw the attention of your target audience, yet
many businesses around the world do opt with unique words
that are not inevitably associated directly to their business line
or the profession or product or services.
This tactic works nicely in the minds of the customers
and keeps them guessing – why the company has such a
strange name?
For instance – OLA, SYSKA,OYO, ZUARI, Apple and Amazon
that do not resemble their business arena.
Few more such Indian Brands are :

THE RULES OF
NAMING PROCESS
THE RULES OF NAMING
PROCESS
{3}
You can’t have a Business without a Business Name.
Nor You should have a casual or disputed Name.
But the process of choosing the perfect business name that
is both catchy and communicates what your business is
about; is by no means easy.
Many Businesses have failed in the past largely due to a
name that just didn’t work, so it’s important to get this right.
Choosing a good business name is very important if
it’s going to be successful and it’s key to differentiating you
from your competitors.
Customers associate a business name with the value it
provides to them.
Legal Angle to Consider
Before you start for picking up the perfect business name,
you should have a clear idea of what type of business entity
structure you are going to have from legal standpoint.
This is important because rules regarding name registration
vary depending on the structure of your business.
CATCHY BRAND & DOMAIN NAMES | © CHANDRASHEKHAR SINGH 15
THE RULES OF NAMING
PROCESS
The Naming Process
If your business is a company i.e. Limited (listed or
unlisted), Private Limited, OPC-One Person Company or
LLP-Limited Liability Partnership you need to register the
business name with respective ROC- Registrar of
Companies of your city & then GST Dept.
In case of Sole proprietor or Partnership firm, you
need to register your business name with GST Dept .
Another obvious thing to do while naming your
business is to check if the name is already in use.
Technically speaking, unless a business name in India is
registered as a trademark, it can be used by multiple
entities.
You may have seen may eateries on with the name of
any famous one only many Highways of India like Gulshan
Dhaba on Delhi-Agra Highway( NH-2).

The Naming Process
Points to remember while
Naming your Business (Rules)
As narrated earlier, the main purpose of a Business or
Product name should be to communicate what services you
are offering while being easy to remember and unique, if
possible.
Here are a few useful tips to keep in mind:
1. Be descriptive but not too general or vague
2. Use related words in a creative way. ...
3. Keep it simple. ...
4. Don't copy your competitors. ...
5. Avoid using your own name. ...
6. Choose a name that's scalable. ...
7. Use your industry or Product Keywords
8. Wrong Spellings
9. Use Acronyms
1 0. Make sure you have a related domain,
preferably a dot com
1. Be descriptive but not too general or vague
Don’t choose a name that is too vague or too
meaningful. Generic names, like – Meena Tiffin Service, is
not only boring but also not easy to remember. Moreover, it
doesn’t stand out from other providers.
CATCHY BRAND & DOMAIN NAMES | © CHANDRASHEKHAR SINGH
17
THE RULES OF NAMING
PROCESS
The Naming Process
Now consider the name Corporate Kitchen, PhotoBucket or
Canva – these are descriptive enough, not boring, and not
something you’re not likely to forget.
2. Use related words in a creative way
Don’t be tempted to stuff many keywords into your
business name you are in love with. Using plain keywords like
General Motors doesn’t work anymore.
But often, choosing a somewhat modified version of
related keywords works very well, provided it expresses what
your business or product is all about.
A good way to create catchy, memorable business
names is to use alternate versions of common words related
to the service you’re offering.
For example, the name Pet-Pooja (पेट-पूजा) can be a good &
catchy name for a Restaurant.
*(Pet/ पेट- Hindi word for Stomach)
3. Keep it Simple [Easy to Pronounce & Remember]
Don’t choose a name that is too long or complicated.
Remember that your business name needs to be appealing to
your customers. It should sound pleasant, familiar and
conjure up positive emotions whenever they hear it not the
reverse.
CATCHY BRAND & DOMAIN NAMES | © CHANDRASHEKHAR SINGH 18
THE RULES OF NAMING
PROCESS
The Naming Process
It also needs to be easy to pronounce and remember.
Consider the name Echelon – it’s not only hard to pronounce
for a common man, but it’s downright obscure. Whenever
you need to explain your business name, it’s probably not a
good sign.
It’s okay to be a bit clever, but don’t overdo yourself.
The name is a play on the word Attention – Attention of
Prospective Customer
Other examples include Digg (dig), Flickr (flicker) and
Compaq (compact).
4. Don’t Copy Your Competitors
Avoid choosing a name too similar to other businesses in
your industry. It can mean appearing to be a counterfeit,
unoriginal & unethical which is not good for your brand
image.
It can also mean potential customers confuse your
business with your competition making it more difficult to
get repeat work & a total wastage of money if you spend
handsome amount on advertising which will surely benefit
to the Competitor also.
5. Avoid using your own name
Unless you as a person are an established brand being a well
awarded & Acclaimed Social or Political Leader,
Sportsperson, Speaker, Trainer, Coach or some kind of film
or Social Media celebrity or Solo Practitioner Professional
like a Doctor, CA or Lawyer avoid using your own name.
CATCHY BRAND & DOMAIN NAMES | © CHANDRASHEKHAR SINGH
19
THE RULES OF NAMING
PROCESS
The Naming Process
Your name doesn’t communicate anything about your
business and won’t mean much to potential customers. This
may even cause problems if you ever want to sell your
business in future or even if you wish to expand.
There are some rare examples however where
integrating the owner’s name or Surname within the brand
name can work well. Examples are – Tybros ( Tyagi Brother),
Chansons (Chandgiram & Sons) Automattic (named after its
founder Matt) and Ford Motors (Henry Ford).
6. Choose a name that’s scalable
Pick a name that can allow future expansion or new product /
service category addition to your business.
Say, Today if you sell just books, you might one day
plan to sell stationery products or accessories too. If your
service is based in a certain town or city, after few years you
might extend to other cities. So, select a broad name that can
encompass your future growth.
7. Use your industry or Product Keywords
Some business giants keep their names that directly give an
idea about their business. Such business names easily make
a place in the viewers’ mind. For instance – Burger King,
Shuttl, Pizza Hut

8. Use ACRONYM
There is a practice of making use of several words to name a
creative business name and then using the acronym to form
the business name..
TCS (Tata Consultancy Services),
ESPN (Entertainment and Sports Programming Network),
and
FCUK (French Connection United Kingdom)
are some popular examples that use acronyms to form their
creative company names.
