rising above the San Luis Valley is framed with the
blue peaks of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range.
During the summer, park rangers organize a number
of nature walks and interpretive programs exploring
the dunes’ geology, history and wildlife. For a more
challenging walk, head into the dune field itself. Whether
hiking, sliding, exploring in a dunes wheelchair — or
simply playing — the Great Sand Dunes are a unique
area for all to enjoy.
The visitors center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The center offers
an inspiring film presentation, interactive exhibits,
bookstore, first aid room and back porch with viewing
scope.
A number of camping sites, ranging from car and
RV areas to primitive backpacking sites on and off the
dune field, are available.
