Four counts of murder filed against suspect
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
A 35-year-old man from Franklin County has been charged with
murdering four people in West Jefferson last month.
On June 14, West Jefferson Police Chief Christopher Floyd announced
at a press conference that four counts of murder have been
filed with Madison County Municipal Court against John Paul
“J.P.” Steckel. Additional charges will be requested in a grand jury
hearing.
The Columbus Division of Police arrested Steckel approximately
two weeks ago on unrelated charges stemming from a probation violation.
He has been in the Franklin
County Jail since that time. He has
an extensive criminal history.
“It’s extensive to the point that he
had a parole officer with Franklin
County, as well as state and federal
parole officers,” Floyd said.
“His name came to us in the first
day as a possible suspect,” the chief
continued.
Video footage from residential and
business surveillance cameras allowed
investigators to piece together
a timeline for the crime and positively
identify the suspect, he added.
John Paul Steckel of
Franklin County has been
charged with four counts
of murder in the killing of
four people in West Jefferson
on May 24.
As for motive, Floyd said robbery
is a possibility. He noted that the suspect
and the victims all knew one another.
The crime was perpetrated on May
24. The West Jefferson Police Department
received a 911 call of a
male with a possible gunshot wound
lying at the rear of 127 Jackson St. Upon arriving at the scene, officers
found one male lying outside the entry door of the home and
two males and one female inside the home. All four had suffered
gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were: Andrew Thomas Swindall, 45, of West Jefferson;
Shawn A. Wright, 45, of London; Jamie Danielle Lavender, 30,
of Springfield; and Leon Billy Daniels, 38, of London.
West Jefferson Police conducted the investigation with assistance
from the Madison County and Franklin County sheriff’s offices,
the Madison County Prosecutor’s Office, and the Ohio Bureau
of Criminal Identification and Investigation.
Madison County Sheriff John Swaney.
“This was a lot of teamwork and
a lot of hard work done by all the
agencies,” Floyd said. “All these
agencies came together and worked
amazingly hand-in-hand.”
Floyd said the last murder in
West Jefferson was approximately
“Things like this don’t normally
happen in nice, small towns like West Jefferson, but obviously
they can,” he said.
West Jefferson, but obviously
they can.”
Mayor Ray Justice offered condolences
to the families and friends
of the victims, saying they have
“endured under this hardship too
long.”
Floyd said the next step involves
pulling together the entire
case file to present to Madison
County Prosecutor Nicholas Adkins
who will review it and present charges to a special
grand jury.
Madison-Plains returning to ballot on Nov. 2
Madison-Plains Local Schools is going
back to voters with a renewal request for its
1.25 percent earned income tax levy.
The issue will appear on the Nov. 2 general
election ballot. The current levy expires
at the end of 2023. If passed, the levy would
generate an estimated $2.3 million per year
for the school district. Fluctuations in earnings
could mean minor changes to that
amount.
The issue first appeared on the May 4
ballot, coming up short of approval by 3.9
percent.
“The request is being sought to help stabilize
district finances,” said Superintendent
Chad Eisler. “We have worked hard to
control expenses while enhancing the service
we provide. We have evidence that
things are heading in a positive direction,
and we want to keep it moving that way.
“Stabilizing district finances will help us
to be able to engage in some longer-term
planning which will be beneficial for the
learning opportunities we will be able to deliver
to our students.”
On June 15, the school board passed the
first of two resolutions required to place the
levy request on the ballot. The second resolution
will be on the board’s agenda at its
next meeting. The length of the levy term
will be in that resolution.
In other action, the board approved two
overnight field trips. The high school’s FFA
officers will attend Ohio FFA camp. The
high school’s boys’ basketball team will
travel to Marietta for a team camp.
The school board’s next regularly scheduled
meeting is July 20 at 7 p.m. in the district
meeting room.

Participation up 26 percent for bicycle tour
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
After putting on an event that attracts hundreds of participants,
it can be fun and enlightening to go through the statistics.
Jim Pozy, treasurer of the Friends of Madison County Parks &
Trails (FMCPT), did just that following the 18th Annual Strawberry
Festival Bicycle Tour held on June 12. FMCPT, an all-volunteer
group that maintains the bike trail in Madison County, hosts
the event.
Arguably the most exciting stat from this year’s tour was the
number of participants—277 compared to 220 in 2019. (The event
was not held last year due to the pandemic.) That’s a 26 percent increase.
“Riders noticed the increase, as well. They said, ‘We felt cramped
up, and we wanted to get out.’ So, of course, some of that increase
can certainly be attributed to people having a post-COVID-19 event
to enjoy,” Pozy said.
One of the biggest events FMCPT hosts each year, the tour offers
21-, 44-, 66-, and 100-mile routes, break stops stocked with refreshments,
and plenty of volunteer support. The routes wind through
Madison, Clark, Fayette, and Greene counties.
Participants come from all over, and that’s where some more interesting
numbers come into play. Pozy went through the registrants
list and calculated that 27 percent of this year’s riders hailed
from Columbus proper, while 7 percent were from Pickerington, 6
percent were from Hilliard, and similar numbers from some of the
other Columbus suburbs. He noted that 7 percent of the riders were
from London.
“We also had people from Dayton and Beavercreek, Cincinnati,
Marysville, and far and wide,” Pozy reported. “And we had four riders
from out of state—one from Illinois, one from Pennsylvania, another
from Michigan, and one from Maryland.”
Of those who rode, 40 percent were female and 60 percent were
male. The breakdown of how many people rode each of the route
options presented a bit of a surprise.
“We had even more people doing the 100-mile route than we did
the 21. That didn’t use to be the stat, but the 100 is becoming more
Jim Pozy, treasurer of the Friends of Madison County Parks & Trails, points bicycle tour participants to resources
at the shelter house at the Prairie Grass trailhead behind the Madison County Senior Center.
popular,” Pozy said.
Here’s this year’s breakdown: 21 miles,
14 percent; 44 miles, 30 percent; 66 miles,
38 percent; and 100 miles, 18 percent.
Another exciting number is $9,000. The
tour raised just shy of that amount, all of
which goes back into the trail for maintenance,
improvements, and beautification.
The Strawberry Festival tour and the Ride
with the Ox tour, held on Labor Day in conjunction
with West Jefferson’s Ox Roast, are
two of FMCPT’s main fundraisers.
And here’s one last number to share: 25. At least that many
FMCPT members, friends, and supporters volunteered at the event.
They worked three to 12 hours each, some starting at 5:30 in the
morning, setting up in the dark, to allow riders to get an early start
to beat the heat.
“It takes a lot of people to run this thing successfully,” Pozy said.
“And they did it all with a smile because we love the trail ourselves.
It’s a good cause—to raise money for the trail. People were pretty
jazzed about working.”
All of this adds up to something that can’t be quantified with
hard numbers—buzz.
“We got so many positive comments on the ride this year,” said
Dr. Gregg Alexander, FMCPT president. “People get that warm,
friendly, good-time buzz, then next year they are telling their
friends and bringing more people with them. I’m optimistically inclined
that we won’t see a drop-off in participation next year, that
we will see an increase again.”
Grandview residents Eric Mialky and his three daughters, (from
left) Emma, Clare, and Anna, were among the record number of
participants in this year’s London Strawberry Festival Bicycle Tour.

WJ Schools: In-person only and masks optional
By Linda Dillman
Facial coverings are now optional in all areas of the
Staff Writer
Norwood and middle/high school campuses. However,
When classes resume for Jefferson Local students
unvaccinated people over the age of 12 and children between
the ages of 2 and 11 are encouraged to wear facial
later this summer, it will be under a full, in-person instruction
and continuity-of-service plan recently approved
by the school board.
coverings while indoors.
A fully vaccinated person does not have to quarantine
if exposed to COVID-19 if they are symptom-free,
“We will not have remote instruction this year. It will
all be in-person,” said Superintendent William Mullett
but unvaccinated people must quarantine for no less
during the June 14 board meeting.
than 10 days if exposed to the virus.
Board President Melissa Adams said she is very
Jefferson Local will continue to coordinate with the
happy to have the district back to more normal operations
without a mask requirement, which she said was
health department to provide vaccinations to staff and
students. Safety protocols for social distancing regarding
classroom occupancy will be implemented.
a struggle during the 2020-21 school year.
“I’m very happy to see masks are optional,” she said.
According to the plan, “The district will take a common-sense
approach in regards to scheduling large
The document, as approved by the board, is a tool for
the community to use in learning about the district’s
group gatherings with consideration given to the event,
It also affords the district the opportunity to receive
plan’s implementation which is subject to modification
based on changing circumstances.
The district developed summer lessons to help bridge
According to the plan, the school district will follow
the learning gap caused by the pandemic and to reduce
Madison County Public Health’s guidelines and recommendations
to maintain the health and safety of stu-
the summer learning gap and will continue the one-toone
Chromebook program for each student.
dents, educators, and staff.
Two students per seat will be allowed on buses, and
MP hires new school leaders
siblings/children from the same household will be seated together.
Contract tracing protocols apply if a student tests positive after riding
the school bus.
The plan will be reviewed no less than every six months with the
first review occurring in late November/early December 2021. The
plan will be updated as needed through Sept. 30, 2024, as needs
change in the district.
The school board also approved raising the substitute bus driver
pay to $17 per hour and defined the position as on an as-needed
basis for regular routes, supplemental routes, and field trips.
“Seventeen dollars seems to be a pretty fair wage for a sub
driver,” said Bob Hiss, director of facilities and transportation.
Hiss researched the substitute bus driver pay scales of surrounding
districts before making his recommendation.
Madison-Plains Local Schools will start next school
year with two new administrators.
On June 15, the school board approved the hiring of
Kyle Huffman as the new junior high/senior high school
principal and Matthew Welsh as the district’s athletic
director.
Huffman comes to Madison-Plains with 16 years of
experience as the high school principal at Triad Local
Schools. He also taught social studies at Triad for seven
years.
“We are excited to have Mr. Huffman join our team,”
said Superintendent Chad Eisler. “He is a veteran administrator,
and his knowledge and experience in leading
a building will be a benefit to our staff and our
students. He is a student-centered and compassionate
leader who puts the needs of the students at the center
of his decisions.”
Huffman earned his bachelor’s degree in education
and master’s degree in educational leadership from
Wright State University.
“I am excited to bring my experience to Madison-
Plains and help support the district in its goal to enhance
student achievement,” said Huffman who
replaces Ann Boerger.
Welsh, the new athletic director, is new to the education
field. After more than 20 years in the corporate
world, he felt he was not working in an area where his
focus was as strong as it could be. He went back to
school to earn a master’s degree in athletic administration
at Ohio University.
While his position at Madison-Plains will be his first
job in education, he has completed internships at some
large high schools and is ready to accept the challenge
of being a full-time athletic director.
“Matthew Welsh comes highly recommended to us
by those with whom he has worked during his internships,
by his graduate school colleagues, and by his professors,”
Eisler said. “These people spoke about
Matthew’s passion, enthusiasm, diligence, and what a
fantastic person he is. We are very pleased to bring him
on board and have him begin working with our coaches
Chad Eisler (left), Madison-Plains Local Schools superintendent,
and Anthoula Xenikis (right), school board
president, welcome Matthew Welsh (second from left),
the district’s new athletic director, and Kyle Huffman,
the district’s new junior high/senior high principal.
and athletes.”
In addition to his master’s degree in athletic administration,
Welsh has a master’s degree in business administration
from Ohio Dominican University and a
bachelor’s degree in health and physical education/athletic
training from Kent State University.
“I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I’m super excited
to be a part of this school district and to start
building relationships with this community, the teachers,
the coaches, but most importantly the kids.”
Welsh replaces Brandon Wright.
In other personnel news, the district hired Dan Mc-
Culloch as its next instrumental and vocal music
teacher/lead band director. McCulloch comes to Madison-Plains
from Ridgemont Local Schools where he has
spent the last four years as director of bands. Prior to
his time at Ridgemont, McCulloch taught at Vanlue
Local Schools and Willard City Schools. He is a graduate
of The Ohio State University where he earned his
bachelor’s degree in music education. He replaces Renee
Hostetler.
Village considers food truck permit process
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Last year, Mount Sterling saw an uptick
in food trucks operating in the village due to
the pandemic. As a result, village leaders
are considering creation of a permit process,
map of eligible locations, a list of times the
trucks are permitted to operate, and rules
of conduct.
Currently, the village does not require a
permit or fee, asking instead for a donation
from anyone setting up a mobile food unit.
By instituting fees and rules, the village
could better control when and where food
trucks set up, preventing infringement on
other food establishments in town.
A first reading on the proposed legislation
was held at the June 14 council meeting.
The proposal calls for a $40 fee for a
one-day permit and a $75 fee for a permit
good for up to three days. The village’s
building, planning, and zoning department
would issue the permit.
The proposal also calls for the village to
Candidates sought for Soil
and Water District board
Any resident 18 years of age or older who
resides in Madison County can seek election
to the county’s Soil and Water Conservation
District (SWCD) board of supervisors. Names
can be placed on the ballot in two ways.
Candidates can be nominated by the
SWCD nominating committee. This committee
works throughout the year looking for
candidates who are interested in the conservation
and protection of natural resources in
the county.
Alternatively, interested individuals may
call SWCD at (740) 852-4003 to arrange to
pick up nomination petition forms. Potential
candidates must secure at least 10 signatures
from residents and/or landowners from
Village needs
grocery store
When is the village of Mount Sterling
going to get a store so the citizens can get
fruit and vegetables? Also, we have had no
dentist in the village for over 10 years. The
Chamber of Commerce and the village council
need to do something about this. Parks
and festivals are fine, but lets get a store in
the village of Mount Sterling.
district by the close of business on July 15.
Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements
and deadline will be listed on
the ballot for the special election. The election
period runs Aug. 19-Sept. 17. The annual
banquet is set for Aug. 19 at the
Soil and water conservation districts, located
in all 88 Ohio counties, are legal subdivisions
of state government that provide
natural resource management assistance to
county landowners and other units of local
government. The district is funded by the
Madison County commissioners. Funding
from the Ohio Department of Agriculture
supplements the county funds. A five-member
board of county residents governs the
district. Board members serve staggered
issue a map designating locations in village
right-of-ways, public parks, and other properties
where street vendors can set up. Approved
permits would be on a first-come,
first-served basis. Special accommodations
and rules also are proposed for public events
and special events. The proposal covers procedures
for setting up on private property,
as well.
Anyone who violates the rules would be
charged with a second-degree misdemeanor
and possibly subjected to a fine of $300 per
day, impound of their street vending unit,
and/or revocation of their permit, if the legislation
is enacted.
Council passed the proposed ordinance
on first reading with a vote of 5-1.
Council member Becky Martin cast the
lone “no” vote. She expressed two concerns,
both involving where permit fee revenues
go. She said earlier discussions about the
matter included the idea that permit fees
would go into the parks and recreation fund.
That provision was not included in the proposed
legislation. Council member Andy
Drake proposed to amend the legislation to
include the provision; the amendment
passed 6-0.
Martin, who is active with the Mount
Sterling Chamber of Commerce and the
merchants Market Crew, said she also
thinks non-profit groups who hold events in
the village that involve food trucks should
receive the permit fees as part of their
fundraising efforts. No amendment was proposed
at the June 14 meeting to cover this
provision.
Two more readings of the legislation are
scheduled at upcoming council meetings.
New stops signs on New
The Ohio Department of Transportation
is replacing the bridge over U.S. Route 62 in
Mount Sterling. Work began March 15 and
is scheduled to wrap up at the end of September.
Since work began, residents have
reported increased traffic moving at high
rates of speed, especially on New and High
Streets which motorists are using as cutthroughs.
To help slow down the traffic, the street
committee recently installed three four-way
stop signs on New Street. They are permanent
additions that will remain in place
even after the bridge project is complete.
“It’s a hope that we can get those under
control without doing any more improvements
to New Street. We don’t really want
to do that, but at the same time, if we have
to, we will look at both New and High
again,” said Drake, street committee chair.
Council member David Timmons said he
has already noticed a positive difference.
Drake replied, “I think it’s helped. It’s
not an A, slam dunk, No. 1 solution because
we still have cut-through traffic, but it’s not
bad either. It’s a good start.”
Residents of High Street have expressed
interest in alternate ways to reduce speed
on their street. They might come before
council to talk about their ideas, Drake
added.
The next street committee meeting is set
for July 7 at 8 a.m. at town hall and is open
to the public.

Taking three-pronged approach to beautification
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Beautification is the aim with three separate
efforts taking place in the village of
Mount Sterling.
New to the lineup is a community beautification
committee, a group affiliated with
village council’s nuisance and abatement
committee.
“We had a couple of residents that expressed
a lot of interest in beautifying our
community—planting more perennials, possibly
trees, weed-eating, doing some light landscaping,”
said Becky Martin, a council
member and chair of the nuisance and abatement
committee. “I’m happy to report that
the group is off the ground and working.”
Participants are performing tasks on a
volunteer basis and securing donations of
plants and supplies.
The nuisance and abatement committee
also has resumed its “Award-Winning Yard”
contest. Once a month, members of the committee
drive around the village, choose
three yards for recognition, and place signs
in those yards.
The third way in which community leaders
are encouraging residents to spruce up
their properties is the 2nd Annual Beautiful
Yard contest, sponsored by the Mount Sterling
Chamber of Commerce. As opposed to
the village’s monthly yard contest, this contest
is a one-time event and requires nominations.
The contest is open to residents within
the village limits, Burr Oaks, and McClimansville.
Anyone can nominate their own
yard or another person’s yard. Nominations
can be emailed to mtsterlingcoc@gmail.com
or dropped off on paper to Courtney Bricker
at town hall. Nominations must include: the
name of the person making the nomination,
the address of the yard being nominated
and the owner’s name, if known, and a brief
description of the yard. Photos are optional.
Judging will take place on July 2. Winners
will be announced at the parade on
July 4. (Note: The new start time for the parade
is 10 a.m. Lineup is at 9 a.m. at the
Mount Sterling Community Center.)
Prizes will be awarded in Chamber
Bucks, redeemable only at businesses of
Chamber members: $100, first place; $75,
second place; $50, third place.
Upcoming events
• Movie nights—The village’s May movie
night was cancelled due to bad weather. The
parks and recreation committee hopes to
reschedule the event for July, making for
two movie nights in July. The date of the
second night is yet to be determined.
The village will show “Jungle Book 2” on
June 26. Mount Sterling Public Library’s
bookmobile will be on site. The selection for
July 31 is “Tom & Jerry.” The movies are • Car shows—Steve Cooper, owner of the
shown on the village’s inflatable big screen Dairy Freeze, 85 N. London St., will hold a
at Mason Park.
retro car show on June 26 and a full-throttle
• Food & Flea—Food trucks and flea market
vendors set up at Mason Park the first 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Village council granted
car show on Aug. 21. Both events will run
Sunday of each month. The July event has Cooper’s request that Church Street be
been cancelled because it lands on July 4. closed from London to Market streets during
the shows.
Food & Flea will resume on Aug. 1.
Free plane rides for kids
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Youths ages 8 to 17 have an opportunity
to get a bird’s eye view of London and the
surrounding area at the Young Eagles Rally
set for June 26 at Madison County Airport.
Chapter 9 of the Experimental Aircraft
Association (EAA) is offering free airplane
rides. Pre-registration is available at
https://chapters.eaa.org/eaa9/young-eagles.
Time slots are 9 to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to
noon. Walk-ups are welcome, as well. A parent
must be on hand to sign off on paperwork.
Rides typically last 15 to 20 minutes and
run from London to Springfield to South
Charleston before heading back to London
where the planes fly over downtown London,
the London City Schools campus, and
the grounds of the Farm Science Review before
landing back at the airport.
“During the flight, kids may get the
chance to handle the controls,” said Darren
Schehl, EAA 9 president.
Founded in 1992, the purpose of the
Young Eagles program is to give youths the
chance to fly in a general aviation airplane,
educate them about careers in aviation, and
generally inspire them when it comes to the
world of aviation.
To date, EAA 9 has provided rides to
8,498 children. Nationwide, EAA has flown
more than 2 million youths. The all-volunteer
group is made up of professional and
private pilots.
“One of our members has done over 1,200
rides himself and another has done 1,000,”
said Schehl, who has been a licensed pilot
since 1992. “One day, I gave 30 kids a ride.
Of the 30, 20 had never been off the ground
ever in any kind of airplane.”
EAA 9 usually holds six Young Eagles
rallies each year—two each at the Madison
County Airport and two each at Bolton
Field and the Ohio State University Airport
in Columbus. This year’s rallies at the OSU
Airport are on hold due to the university’s
current policies regarding COVID-19.
The last time the chapter held a rally at
the Madison County Airport, they brought
five planes with them. Depending on the
turnout, they take one to three youths up at
a time. Following the June 26 event in London,
the group’s next rally is set for July 10
at Bolton Field.
program.
more than 1,000 free rides to youths ages 8 to 17 through the Young Eagles Rally program.
Bernard is now taking flying lessons at the Ohio State University Airport in Columbus
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Get ready for more than 160 Cobras to
slither into London on June 26. Rather than
hiss, these Cobras rumble and roar.
After a year away due to COVID-19, the
Ohio Cobra Club will return to London on
June 26 for its annual show. The event,
which takes place in conjunction with the
London Strawberry Festival, attracts
Shelby Cobra car enthusiasts from around
the country.
“We’re glad to be back. We look forward
to a successful show,” said Pam Beck, club
vice president.
Show participants will make a grand entrance
with a Cobra parade. The Madison
County Sheriff’s Office will escort the group
for 10 miles from the Speedway Truck Stop
near the southwest corner of I-70’s Exit 79
to the show grounds on North Main Street
in front of the county courthouse. The cars
will arrive shortly after 9 a.m. and stay
until approximately 3 p.m.
The show features 1960s-era Shelby
Cobra Roadster, Daytona Coupe, and Ford
GT40 replicas and originals. Several car-related
vendors will be on site in what the
club calls Gasoline Alley.
Besides the chance to get up-close looks
at beautiful, powerful cars, visitors have the
opportunity to go for a ride in one. Charity
rides are $10 each with all proceeds going to
the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). Ride
hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Since its founding in 2001, the club has
donated $1.7 million to CFF which raises
awareness and funding for research to fight
cystic fibrosis, an uncurable disease that
makes it difficult to breathe.
The club raises money for the cause
through the charity rides, t-shirt sales, and
Queen’s two-year reign comes to end
“All our dreams can come true if we have
the courage to pursue them.”–Walt Disney
Two years ago, I had just graduated high
school ready to take on the world headfirst,
but I knew I couldn’t leave the festival
queen life just yet. I went out of my comfort
zone and competed for the London Strawberry
pageant and I won! The experience of
being crowned queen is something I’ll never
forget. Representing a larger festival had always
been a dream of mine, and I accomplished
it one step at a time. It was
extremely tiring as this was like no other
pageant I had competed in. The requirements
were more intense, as well as the
competition. I doubted myself along the entire
journey. I didn’t think I was capable of
being crowned queen, but deep down I believed
in myself.
I am very thankful that London has
given me the opportunity to travel and represent
our festival all across Ohio and parts
of West Virginia. Along my journey, I was
able to meet so many wonderful young
women that have impacted my life and my
future. Thank you, ladies. Another big
thank-you to my grandparents for taking
me everywhere, pulling the float, redecorating
it and, most of all, dealing with my
grumpiness. You guys are the best! Oh, and
I can’t forget about Holly and Kevin Stockham
for doing everything they can for the
queens’ program and so much more.
Being a queen is much more than wearing
sparkly crowns and dresses. It’s about
representing your community with pride
and passion. Along that journey, you learn
so much about other communities, and you
learn to love Ohio a little more with each
festival or event you attend.
Over the past two years, I have experienced
hands-on how festival life has impacted
my day-to day-life. For example: I
was recently hired at the Pickaway County
Sheriffs Office in the Corrections Division
as an officer. As part of the hiring process, I
had a panel interview (which also is part of
the pageant). I felt extremely comfortable
and confident going into that interview because
I had seen it before. I truly believe if
it wasn’t for being apart of such a wonderful
program, I wouldn’t be who I am today.
Hailie Anderson is the outgoing London
Strawberry Festival queen. She will help to
crown the new queen on June 26 following
the parade.
My name is Hailie Anderson, the 2019
London Strawberry queen and the longest
reigning queen in London’s history.

London Strawberry Festival
Duffey will lead parade as ‘21 grand marshal
The London Strawberry Festival committee
has selected Arlene Duffey as the
2021 parade grand marshal.
Arlene is a lifelong resident of London
where she raised her sons, Joshua and
Jason. She has six grandchildren—Max,
Gavin, Addy, Hayden, Levi, and Cole.
Arlene recently retired after serving 37
years as the 4-H office associate and 35
years as the London city council clerk. Retiring
was a big decision, she said, however,
after spending time at home during the pandemic,
she realized it was time to retire and
spend more time with family. She is enjoying
walks with her family, flower gardening,
travel, and other leisure pursuits. She is
looking forward to taking up bicycling and
exploring many of the bike trails she has
been hearing so much about.
Some of her favorite travel locations are
located in Florida. Another favorite destination
is Colorado Springs.
Arlene was interviewed for the council
clerk position by Russ Walls and Art Hamilton.
Over the years, she worked with 14
council presidents, numerous council members,
and three council location changes.
She is the city’s longest serving council
clerk.
When asked about her favorite memories
as clerk, Arlene laughed as she related the
time a discussion about cat leashes drew one
of the largest crowds to a council meeting.
Her experience with the 4-H program
spanned 37 years. She worked with eight 4-
H educators, several agricultural educators,
and numerous interns and part-time associates.
She was actively involved in the operations
of the office and program through
many transitions in leadership and technology.
Even with the changes, she could be
counted on to assist associates and families
with finding the information they needed.
Arlene assisted with Cloverbud Day
Camp and 4-H Camp, including serving as
chaperone for the rollerblading and bicycling
workshops. She was an integral part
of Rally Night, Discovery Night, the county
fair, and the county 4-H banquet. No one
ever doubted Arlene would be there to lend
a hand and organize events.
Arlene said she views the London Strawberry
Festival as a chance to come together
with friends for a great social event.
Fun facts about strawberries
• Strawberries are the only fruit with
seeds on the outside. A berry’s seeds are on
the inside. Since their seeds are on the outside,
strawberries aren’t true berries, like
blueberries or grapes.
• Each seed is considered by botanists to
be its own separate fruit.
• The average strawberry has 200 seeds.
• Most strawberry plants reproduce from
runners even though the seeds can grow
into plants.
• Strawberries are from the rose family.
Arlene Duffey, shown here with two of her grandsons, Max and Gavin Duffey, is grand
marshal of the 2021 London Strawberry Festival Parade.
