4 Advertising & Newsdesk: (046) 624-4356 Find us on Facebook 24 June 2021 TALK OF THE TOW NClassics at Castle curtain fallsFinal performance of popular series that has brought so much enjoyment, goes off with a bangROB KNOWLESIt has been 14 years since thefirst Classic at the Castle wasperformed and Sunday June20 saw the 50th and finalconcert in the series.Impresario Sue Gordon andher team, including herhusband Neville, daughterJessica, along with other friends,have allowed Port Alfred awindow into the classical musicscene usually only afforded inthe bigger cities.For 14 years, residents of thearea, as well as farther afield,have descended on theRichmond House Music Roomto listen to and enjoy themusical talent that has gracedits small stage.Before the concert began,Jessica Gordon, unable toattend the concert due to thecloseness of her pregnancy duedate,instead made a videowhere various artists fromaround the world and who hadperformed at the Classics paidtribute to Sue.Artists from Italy, the US,South America and morelocally in SA thanked her for herh o s p i t a l i t y.Each also said that theywould enjoy playing here againand that Port Alfred was ahighlight of their overseas trips.This final concert wasperformed by David Bester onthe violin and JF Viljoen on thepiano.The pair of very talentedmusicians performed severalworks for piano and violinincluding the Sonata for violinand piano in C major, opus 45,by Edvard Grieg. Best known forhis work, the Peer Gynt Suiteand folk music of the period,the three sonatas represented aview into the development ofthe composer and werebrilliantly interpreted by Besterand Viljoen, who seemed veryat home with the composition.Next, the pair played Fratr esby Estonian composer ArvoPärt, a very technical andchallenging piece of music forboth musicians and theiraudience.Challenging in the sense it isa technical piece written inPä r t ’s unique own musicallanguage, earning him theepithet as a “natural composer”.Having been supressedunder the Soviet system, Pärtspent years away fromperformances and thendeveloped his owncompositional language forwhich he is known.Fratr es, from 1977, evokesstillness in the listener eventhough the violin playsfuriously, so much so thatsmoke could have ignited fromthe strings.Difficult, but ultimatelyrewarding, the piece was justright for the afternoon’sperformance.After an interval, Bester andViljoen returned with ArthurFe d e r ’s Sonata for violin andpiano.Feder, who studied atStellenbosch, is a true 21stcentury composer.His film scores, jazzcompositions, mixed media andother works show him to be aforce to be reckoned with in theFINE MUSICIANS: Performing at the 50th and final Classics at the Castle on Sunday, pianist JF Viljoen, left, and violinist DavidBester, gave the audience their best, playing a series of pieces by Grieg, Pärt, Feder and Piazzolla Picture: ROB KNOWLESmusic world. With influencesfrom Debussy and Prokofiev,Fe d e r ’s Sonata fitted into theprogramme perfectly.Finally, the pair playedOblivion and Café by AstorPiazzolla, a piece that broughtto mind art deco, straight linesin the architecture and a typicalfeel of the early 20th century.Brilliantly played, it broughtthe audience to its feetdemanding and encore. Thisbrought the Classics at theCastle series to a sad, but fittingend.CRIMEB R I E FSSATURDAY 26 JUNEDelicious steak supplied byBathurst Butchery and grilledby them to perfection!WEDNESDAY 30 JUNE 2021On Friday June 18 at8.28am theMultiSecurity controlroom received a callfrom the owner of aproperty reporting inHards Street that guestsat the establishmenthad suffered aburglary. The visitorsreported they wereasleep in theircamping van withoutswitching on thealarm. On waking theynoticed that they hadbeen burgled, and anundisclosed amount ofcash stolen out of abag along with wooland knitting needles.Response officersfound the wool and theknitting needles in thebushes. Later theowner asked to cancelSAPS attending as theguests wanted to leavePort Alfred.At 12.52pm inSeptember Street,Station Hill, water wasreported running at aproperty as copperpipes had been stolen.However, arepresentative of theproperty owner did notwant to open a casewith the SAPS.At 2.28pm theMultiSecurity controlroom received analarm from a premisesin St Andrews Road.The client reportedsomeone wearing agrey hoodie andtekkies had stolen a tapon site but did notwant the SAPSi nvo l ve d .At 11.31pm theMultiSecurity controlDistinctiveBy TIMBER TOWNroom received a callfrom a client inCampbell Streetreporting noises on theroof from the shop nextdoor. The responseofficer reported thatsomeone was on theroof and the SAPS wasinformed. Checkingthe cameras theintruder was observedrunning acrossCauseway Road to themunicipal toiletsopposite FNB. At11.48pm, the SAPSarrived and patrolledthe area, but no onewas found. A roofsheet on the shoppremises had beenremoved but no entryhad been gained.On Saturday June 19at 2.24am, theMultiSecurity controlKitchensŖŖŖŖŖroom received analarm from a premisesin Albany Road. Theresponse officerreported there hadbeen a break-in at thepremises. The thiefhad gained entrythrough the bathroomwindow with noburglar bars. Cutlery, akettle and a microwavehad been stolen andfound outside thepremises. A case wasopened with the SAPS.At 5.06am a manphoned reporting thathis son was staying at afriend’s house inMuller Drive that hadhad a break-in. It wasreported that threecellphones had beenstolen and the burglarshad forced open thedoor. A case wasopened with the SAPS.Then, at 6.14am awoman phonedreporting that they hada break-in at apremises in HardsStreet, and requestedSAPS. TheMultiSecurity controlroom was informedthat a laptop wasstolen and that theburglar had gainedentry into the house bylifting the door hook. Acase was opened withthe SAPS.On Monday June 21at 2.55pm, a break-inwas reported in WestBeach Drive. Theresponse officerreported that criminalshad removed theplanks by the garagedoor and used ahomemade hook tohook items. It wasuncertain what hadbeen stolen but itdidn’t appear they hadgained entry into thegarage. A case wasopened with the SAPS.At 5.40pm, aWhatsApp messagereported a break-in at apremises in AlbanyRoad that hadoccurred during thenight. Only food hadbeen stolen and nocase was opened.Also, at 5.33pm, apanic alarm wasreceived from a flat inFreshwater Road. Thecriminal had gainedentrance by bendingthe bathroom windowwhere no burglar bars.A fishing rod and waterboots had been stolenand the SAPS was notinformed.Sky Alarms respondedto a panic signal at aproperty in CampbellStreet on June 13, andfound a drunk mantrespassing. Theyremoved him from thep r o p e r t y.Sky responded to abreak-in in NicoMalan Drive inBathurst on June 14,scaring off the burglarswho had gained entrythrough a security gateand sliding door. Thekey holder and SAPSwere notified. Noproperty was stolen.A theft in Biscay Roadon June 16 resulted ina suspect with thestolen property laterbeing spotted andapprehended by a Skyresponse officer onpatrol. The ownerdeclined to open acase.Also on June 16, Skywas asked to attend toharassment ofcustomers at Wimpyby vagrants. They hadbeen asked to leave bythe manger but laterreturned. Sky removedthem from thepremises.Sky also removed adrunk man trespassingat a home inAtherstone Road.
