I guess because I knew how to skipowder before powder skis showed up.NOW: Something that drives me nuts is thisfrantic, inhuman addiction to a powder day.I can’t stand it, it drives me fricken nuts. It’sjust crazy how people are about powder now.That’s why I love mogul skiing so much—itdoesn’t matter how many people are skiingthe moguls. While it’s wonderful to have thespectacles of the sport—those once-in-alifetimeWarren Miller moments—we need torealize that those are just spectacles. We’reputting a lot of emphasis not on the everydayaspects of the sport, and I think we need torediscover why we ski. We need to understandthe joy of the actual sport itself, not the snowconditions.He’s been in the ski biz for decades, yet instead of fading from skiing’s collective memory, Plakehas stayed relevant by reinventing himself.
