WARRI—DELTA South sen
atorial district of the All Progressives
Congress, APC, Solidarity
Front, has described as unfair, a
newspaper publication disowning
Dr. Alex Ideh and others of the
APC Delta South senatorial
district's publication on the rights
of the Urhobo Ethnic Nationality
to Federal appointments.
Also, the Itsekiri Action Movement
for All Progressives Congress,
IAMFAPC, has lambasted the duo
of Benjamin Eboh and Gabriel
Okandeji, over what it described
as an utter show of disrespect to
prominent leaders of the APC in
the Delta South senatorial district.
Ideh had allegedly said that federal
appointments in the senatorial
district should only come to persons
of the other three ethnic
groups of Ijaw, Itsekiri and Isoko.
APC Solidarity Front, in a statement
by Mr. Awala Gbubemi, said:
"The communique (by Ideh) did
not say that the people of the six
Federal wards in Warri South (part
of Warri urban), who are mainly
Group calls for release of
Nnamdi Kanu
THE IGBO National Move
ment, INM, has followed the
events of the past week and
noted the country's continuous
slide into a pariah state, after the
way it 'abducted' the Leader of
the Indigenous People of Biafra,
IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and
called for his immediate and unconditional
release.
“In a joint statement, signed by
the movement's President and
Legal Adviser, Messrs Anthony
Okolo and Eze Eluchie, respectively,
following the press conference
by Nigeria’s Attorney General
of the Federation and Minister
for Justice, Mr. Abubakar
Malami, on Tuesday, June 29,
2021, during which the ‘international
interception’ of the leader
of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra,
IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu,
was announced, and the press
briefing by Minister of Information
on Thursday, July 1, which provided
updates and further insight
into the mindset of the Federal
Government of Nigeria on that
case, the INM posits that the Nigerian
Federation is supposed to
be operated and governed as a
NUJ calls for Media Trust Fund,
honours Zaura
By Emmanuel Elebeke
ABUJA—THE
Nigeria
Union of Journalists, NUJ,
has called on the Federal Government
to set up a trust fund
for media practitioners, in order
to better their lot.
Chairman, FCT Council of
NUJ, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbeche,
made the call when the union
paid a courtesy visit to the Chairman,
Zaura Energy Limited, Abdulsalam
Zaura.
Ogbeche also called on good
spirited and patriotic Nigerians
to contribute towards raising the
funds, noting that some of the
practicing journalists were already
living in abject poverty, due
to the absence of social welfare
packages.
Meantime, the council conferred
the Peace Ambassador
award on Zaura for his philanthropic
contribution to the poor
in the society.
Presenting the award, the
Council Chairman explained
“The Nigerian State, therefore,
cannot be unmindful of how
negatively it is being perceived
by participating in the unlawful
abduction of a British passport
holder without recourse to legal
avenues to which extradition is
purposed. By operating in manners
unexpected of a territory governed
under democratic precepts,
this government puts itself at par
with pariah states, which consider
illegality as an acceptable modus
operandi in achieving its objectives.
“In view of the multiplicity of
accounts of the manner in which
Mazi Kanu was ‘abducted’, some
of which accounts have led the
British and Kenyan Governments
to forcefully deny their involvement
in any state sponsored acts,
it has become pertinent for the
Presidency to come clean to its
citizens and clarify exactly how
this abduction was carried out in
international territory, outside
jurisdiction of the Nigerian State.
“In view of the above, it is impossible
to expect that the accused
in this case will be accorded
anything remotely resembling a
free, fair and public trial in accordance
with our Criminal Procedure
Act, which limit powers of
arrest and jurisdiction where such
arrests may occur,” the statement
declared.
eral appointments.
"The Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri
jointly produce over 80 percent oil
and gas in Delta State. Therefore,
in our view, it is fair, just and equitable
that one of them should be
appointed into any vacancy meant
for Delta State on Niger Delta
Development Commission,
NDDC, board.
"Is it that all federal appointments
must go to Urhobo, otherwise
hell will be let loose? Don't
the Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri of Delta
South not also deserve appointments,
especially one that deals
with oil and gas production amelioration?
"It is unfortunate that the authors
in their write up decided to
attack the person of Chief Obruche,
a renowned and highly respected
politician in Warri South, who has
always projected the rights of the
Urhobos of Warri South in the
Warri politics in the past 20 years
from DPP, to Labour Party and now
in APC. "
Itsekiri Action Movement For All
Progressives Congress, IAM-
FAPC, in a statement by Awala
Omagbitse, said: "We note the use
of foul and insulting language,
which these two persons used on
our leaders, but we would not descend
to their level to join issues.
that the Council found Zaura
worthy of the award after a close
monitoring of myriads of philanthropic
and humanitarian gestures
he executed in the society
as well as many pursuits of peace
in the country.
He also said the award recipient
was honoured for several
community development project
he single-handed carried out in
Kano state and beyond.
For him, Alh. Zaura has distinguished
himself as an outstanding
leader, grassroots developer
and committed media supporter,
‘‘who is not only a man of affluence
but also of influence saying
that he has dedicated his life
to helping the less privileged
persons in the society.’’
Receiving the award, Zaura,
who was taken unawares by the
presentation, however, thanked
the NUJ for the gesture. He described
journalists as wonderful
people that have continued to
spotlight his activities, saying the
award would spur him to do more
for the society.
