Boundary Blues
Constituency changes proposed by the Boundary
Commission as part of a review into the sizes of
parliamentary constituencies have been unveiled and
have attracted a storm of local criticism. The Commission
was tasked with trying to make every constituency within
5% either way of the average number of electors (just
under 73,400) except for a handful of ‘protected’ seats,
such as Anglesey and the Isle of Wight.
Somewhat bizarrely, the proposed new constituency
boundaries for Makerfield excludes the entire town of
Ashton-in-Makerfield, which moves into a newly formed
Leigh South & Atherton constituency. Going in the other
direction from the old Leigh constituency is the west half
of Leigh. The Firs Lane and Plank Lane areas and half of
Leigh town centre will, as proposals stand, be part of the
Makerfield constituency.
Members of the public are encouraged to go online
to www.bcereviews.org.uk/ where they can provide
feedback before the consultation closes on 2 August
2021. People can comment on anything from where
the proposed new boundary lines are to the names of
the constituencies. There will be a further two rounds
of consultation in 2022 and following this entire
consultation process the Commission will look at all the
evidence received and form its final recommendations.
Community Day
Community groups and charities are being urged to
register for a free stall at the Community Day event in
Wigan town centre. A stall is available on Saturday 18th
September for any local community group or charity as
part of Wigan Rotary Club’s Community Day.
Rotary President Rosemary Charles explained, “We are
providing this ‘free of charge’ opportunity for local groups
to raise their profile, make some money, and recruit new
members. Every participating group will be allocated a
frontage on Standishgate or Market Place to erect a table
or gazebo and benefit from this opportunity”.
More details and a booking form for community groups
can be found on Wigan Rotary Clubs website www.
wiganrotary.org.uk or for more information, just call
