28Yes. to employment opportunitiesOak Tree DevanningOur social enterprise Oak Tree has beenproviding a fast and reliable containerdevanning/loading service across Canterburysince 2002. But it’s the gateway the companyoffers to those with barriers to employmentthat makes this story such a powerful one, withprofits generated by Oak Tree going directlytowards funding the life changing work ofPathway Trust.Tight margins have always been a challenge within thecontainer devanning sector however, Covid has pulledthe purse strings tighter than ever, with a shortageof vessels and increased freight costs slowing downincoming containers.While this has made for a challenging 2020-2021,it has also forced us to think outside the shippingcontainer! A key focus in the latter half of the financialyear has been diversifying our capabilities within thelabour hire arena.The fruits of this out-of-the-box thinking is alreadyevident in the new contracts Oak Tree has secured forthe 2021-2022 financial year.We’re proud to be able to say that over the past13 months, we have helped 12 staff with barriersto employment move into permanent part time orpermanent full time employment, either by directlyplacing them in a role or providing the support andpreparation to get them ready to take the next step.One of our staff had the added challenge of sharedcare parenting. We were able to support him togain his Forklift Operator Certificate and AP (MPIaccredited persons certificate), which gave him theability to work casually around his changing familystructure. Enabling him to support his family throughemployment gave him confidence and he has sincebeen able to work through mediation to renegotiatethe makeup of his custody arrangement. He’s now ina position to go full time and we have an employerinterested in taking him on in this capacity. This isjust one of the wins that drives what we do.Barriers to employment can range from health -both physical and mental, to literacy and learningdisabilities, to criminal convictions, long-termunemployment and even family, such as careresponsibilities for children.Ravensdown has used Oak Tree for casual labour fora number of years and recently this has extendedfrom devanning to areas such as traffic management.“We have received great service, with people turningup on time and keen to get to work,” Manager,Customer Services Graham Hensaw says. “Theycome to us with great skill sets in areas such ascommon sense and the ability to follow instructions.We’re able to leave them to get on with work in theknowledge they will follow safety procedures and getthe job done. We’ve had great service from Sandraand the team, so we’re really happy.”2021-2022 outlook: In October Jamie Dale joinedus as Operations Coordinator. By alleviating someof the pressure points, we have been able to look atthe bigger picture and focus on our operations. As aresult, I am feeling very optimistic about the future.We’re proud to be supporting those with barriersto employment, while providing a loyal and gratefullabour pool, with wraparound support systemsthat these businesses wouldn’t get with traditionalemployment.
