36Yes. is not possible without youThank you to our volunteersElizabeth Andrew once said ‘Volunteers donot necessarily have the time; they just havethe heart,” and it is certainly true of the 132volunteers and 49 mentors that put their time,energy and hearts into supporting our clientson their journeys.Increasing the opportunity for positive socialconnections and ongoing community engagementboth inside the wire and for the men rebuilding theirlives on the outside is a critical component of thesuccess of our Navigate Initiative (NI) programme.One of those opportunities is the Writers’ Group atour central city library Tūranga. We talk to some ofthe people involved in this powerful programme.Amy Paulussen had been following Pathway forsome time before she was approached to help withthe Writers’ Group that had recently started withinthe community. It was based on the model alreadyoperating behind the wire and designed to connectmen with a programme they were both familiar withand enjoying upon release.As a full-time English teacher and a writer herself,Amy had never had the capacity to help. But theopportunity to utilise her skills in the writing field tosupport Pathway’s work just once a fortnight was anopportunity she couldn’t pass up.The Writers’ Group is open to the community andwhat started with just a handful of people with aninterest in writing, has now grown to a sizable group.“I don’t think I will ever be able to shake the surpriseI get when some of these men, who can be quitetough and intimidating in appearance, come upwith something that is incredibly beautiful, soft andinsightful about an animal, a friend or even theenvironment,” she says. “It’s an incredible experiencewhen everyone writes and share what they’ve comeup with. Some of them have such a wicked sense ofhumour and come up with stories which make youthink ‘oh my gosh, did that actually happen?’ And italmost always had!” she laughs.A friend of Jane Jones, who runs the group insidethe wire, Jeph Mathias was invited along to seewhat the Writers’ Group was all about. He’s beenattending ever since. “I really enjoy it,” Jeph says.“Just seeing these guys who are really justdiscovering what words can do and how you can usethem, their work is completely brilliant.”Tūranga’s support for the Writers’ Group has playeda critical role in its success in the community, byproviding a safe and engaging space to hold thegroup. Tūranga’s Poppia Marriott has been a fansince day dot. Looking after the group was one ofher first responsibilities in the role she started in2019. “He Hononga, the name of our ground floor,means ‘connection’ and the Writers’ Group is agreat example of how we provide that communityconnection, enabling this amazing group of guys tomaintain that connection with their community in asafe space.”The personal connection has also been powerfulfor Poppia, who had a close family member whojourneyed in and out of prison. “I think if there weremore resources like Pathway, then he could havehad a very different outcome.“I’ve loved seeing the group grow in size andconfidence. Tūranga is huge and that can be quiteintimidating to these men when they first come in,now you can’t avoid the sound of laughter echoingthrough the room and they even come in during theweek now to use the facilities.“Now they exist in this space like anyone else wouldand that’s really cool.”
