'Dealing with an inconsistent immigration system,'
biggest pain story shared at Auckland Migrant protest
SANDEEP SINGH
Dealing with an inconsistent immigration
system where rules are being changed
almost arbitrarily, without giving any
certainty to a vast number of temporary migrants
in the country, along with the insensitivity of
the bureaucratic system, were some of the main
pain points shared by a large number of migrant
workers protesting in Auckland last weekend.
Hundreds of temporary migrants, mostly
work visa holders, with main grievances of
being in limbo for years, either for sharing
family separation due to closed borders or
languishing in long processing queues of
residency under the Skilled Migrant Category,
had come together on Sunday, July 11 under the
umbrella of Federation of Migrants.
Notably, earlier in April this year, few
prominent migrant unions and networks have
come together to form a Federation of Migrants
(Migrant Workers Association, the Migrant
Rights Network and the Association of New
Kiwis Aotearoa (ANKA) and Migrants NZ)
to increase pressure on the government to
shed the long-demonstrated ambiguity and
indecisiveness within immigration sector.
Since then, many protests have been held at
a number of places in the country, including in
front of parliament a few months ago, where
Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi was cornered
by protesting migrants demanding answers
to their and their family’s precarious visa
situations.
On Sunday, in Auckland, the protest started
with a march from Britomart train station,
which culminated at Aotea Square. It was
followed by passionate speeches from several
speakers and leaders, including Green Party,
MP, Ricardo Menendez.
The Indian Weekender spoke with several
temporary migrant workers who were frustrated
with the Immigration system’s “inaction,”
particularly on the delays in processing queues
for Skilled Migrant Category visas.
“I have been in the country for last six years
hopping from one work visa to another along
with my family,” said Ravinder Kumar, who
had come all the way from Te Puke to be part
of the migrant protest.
“I have submitted Expression of Interest
(EOI) for my wife and me towards the end of
2019 after we were able to have enough points
to be eligible for filing application based on my
work experience,” Ravinder said.
“However, given the current job environment
in the post-Covid phase, we always live-in
perpetual fear of what will happen if my job
situation changes suddenly.”
“Having your residency application in the
processing queue for years is a nightmare as it
"We
have invested
a fortune for our dream
of Kiwi-life and contributed
by working full time and
paying taxes and meeting all visa
requirements by Immigration New
Zealand for many years, and this
should be enough for INZ to
assess our application and
grant residency."
keeps our lives uncertain where we
cannot plan a family or buy a
home as we don’t know if
we will finally be able to
come out of this neverending
uncertainty,”
Ravinder said.
“We have invested a
fortune for our dream of
Kiwi-life and contributed
by working full time and
paying taxes and meeting
all visa requirements by
Immigration New Zealand for
many years, and this should be enough for INZ
to assess our application and grant residency,”
Ravinder said.
Immigration NZ’s website says that currently,
they are assigning applications submitted in
May 2019 to case officers for assessment.
Notably, the government announced a
temporary suspension on submission of
new Expression of Interests in March 2020
following Covid-pandemic, and since then, no
new applications have been filed in the system.
Confused between Bank and Mortgage Advisor?
ADVERTORIAL
Property buying could be a daunting
experience for many first-time buyers
or even seasoned investors. Trust
Mortgage is a reliable and trusted mortgage
service provider which keeps our customers
interests first before anything.
We had years of collective experience in
our team who walk our customers through this
complex but rewarding experience of property
buying by clearing all their confusions at a pace
that suits them.
One of the key confusions that many property
buyer face is choosing between the option of
going directly to banks or seeking services of a
mortgage adviser.
You can go directly to your existing bank,
or any other lender to submit a Home Loan
application. This can only be done with a
bank lender at a branch, over the phone or
online. Additionally, some banks have Mobile
Mortgage Managers who can meet with you. A
benefit of dealing directly with the bank is that
you may get an outcome to your application
earlier than via an advisor, but not necessary
the amount of loan you require to purchase your
dream home.
So why would you need the
services of a Mortgage Advisor?
Mortgage Advisors can save you a lot of time
and money and can meet you during and after
office hours and on weekends as well. Not all
banks have the same lending criteria and whilst
one bank may decline your loan or approve
you with lesser amount then the another may
approve it or may be higher amount for you to
make good choices. Having a mortgage advisor
working for you makes it easier for you as only
need to complete one application and then leave
your advisor to shop around the banks to get
your home loan pre-approval.
Additionally, for the best rates, you really
do need to shop around, again your Mortgage
Advisor will do this for you!
Whilst rates are important, ensuring that
your home loan is structured well can save you
thousands of dollars and get you mortgage free
sooner, a good Mortgage advisor will assist you
with this too!
If you decide to use the services of a
Mortgage Advisor it pays to check out their
credentials and experience to make sure you
have an advisor who is qualified to help you.
Mortgage Advisors are now required by law
to be registered. You can check to see if your
Advisor is registered by going to the Financial
Markets Authority website (FMA) http://
www.business.govt.nz/fsp/app/ui/fsp/record/
searchFsp.do Registered Financial Advisors
are also required to provide all clients with a
disclosure statement covering the following;
Licensing information
• What type of services they can offer?
• What are the fees and charges?
• If they have any conflict of interest ?
• Where to go if something goes wrong.
• How they are regulated
An advisor should also disclose, how they
get paid, and that they are governed by the
Privacy Act which means that your personal
information will only be disclosed to relevant
parties as part of the application process (i.e.
Kiwi-Indian mum cries for help to get MIQ
voucher to grieve for dead brother and unborn child
SANDEEP SINGH
A
Kiwi-Indian mum is devastated to be
not able to secure a place in the MIQ
voucher system to travel urgently for
grieving for her dead brother and her unborn
child.
Hamilton-based Alpana Singh, who is
working full-time, is aghast that the unfair MIQ
voucher booking system is preventing her from
travelling overseas to grieve an unfortunate
death in the family overseas.
Notably, Managed isolation is now booked
out until November, and many experts
are calling out the system as “”unfair and
discriminatory.””
Otago University law professor Andrew
Geddis has criticised the managed isolation
and quarantine (MIQ) booking system as
discriminatory, as it is revealed tech-savvy
people are able to game the system to increase
their chances of booking a room.
Alpana has been trying for weeks to secure a
place in the MIQ system but has no luck yet and
is devastated that she is expected to deal with
this bureaucracy at such a distressful phase of
her life when she has to grieve for her young
brother and the unborn child.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender, Alpana
said, “My only sibling (my 35-year old younger
brother) passed away in India on May 1, 2021.”
The catastrophic news had another
distressful impact on Alpana as within 15
minutes, she experienced an unfortunate
miscarriage and was required to be admitted to
Auckland’sAuckland’s Middlemore hospital.
Alpana’s pain of double tragedy was further
escalated with the scary thoughts about her
old parents living overseas and dealing with
their only son’s unfortunate death in isolation,
necessitating immediate counselling.
“[It] just happened within 15 minutes after
hearing this shocking news, I had my third
miscarrHospital was admitted to Middlemore
hospital. I was traumatised and even sought
help from a counsellor,”” Alpana said with
tears in her voice.
Facing this double tragedy, Alpana first
sought to apply for her old parents’ temporary
visa on humanitarian grounds so that they all
can be together during this distressing time for
the family.
“After a few weeks, I applied to immigration
NZ through my lawyer for my parents’
exemption to travel on humanitarian basis as I
am desperate to meet and comfort my parents,”
Alpana said.
However, Immigration New Zealand declined
the request saying that the applicants do not
meet the criteria to be granted an exception
to the current border closure on the basis of
exceptional humanitarian circumstances.
Now with the only option of travelling
overseas to be with her old parents and grieve
the young death in the family, Alpana tried
booking for MIQ space to make a certain plan
for her travel and back into the country.
“I got my Covid
Vaccination to prepare
a for my visit
to New Delhi
where my old
parents who
have heart
condition,
asthma and
neurological
problems
reside. I am
their only
surviving child.
We need to be
together as a family to
grieve for my brother and my
unborn child.”
“I have been trying desperately to secure
a MIQ voucher online for the 2nd week of
November but have failed again and again,”
Alpana said.
Sharing her frustration on how any available
dates within the MIQ system disappears within
minutes, Alpana said, “Any vacant date (which
magically appears for few seconds after days of
waiting) when clicked, takes me back to the top
of the page so there is no way that I can book
a voucher.”
“I tried calling the MIQ voucher helpline on
Friday to raise the issue again (I had called one
time previously and was told that vacant seats
disappear within seconds) and gave up after
being in the queue for 45 minutes.”
“I am a working lady and cannot afford to sit
in front of a computer 24 by 7 to wait for a MIQ
seat,” Alpana said.
“I see no end to my plight. I am traumatised,
sad and angry that I cannot be there for the two
most important people in my life, my parents.
I am not asking for a voucher to travel for
fun. I have always been a positive person, but
this situation has broken me emotionally and
financially too. I don’t know what to do and
where to go,” Alpana said pleadingly.
The Indian Weekender had reached out to the
MIQ department for a comment on the story.
A managed isolation and quarantine
spokesperson told the Indian Weekender, “All
applications for emergency allocation places
in managed isolation are assessed on a caseby-case
basis, against a set criteria. There is no
guarantee that a person who fits within these
categories will receive an emergency allocation
as it depends on the numbers of applicants and
available places. The reality is there remains a
finite capacity within the MIQ system.”
“There are currently 250 rooms per fortnight
set aside for those who need to travel urgently.
We will review this number over time to ensure
it is sufficient to accommodate travel which is
genuinely urgent while not compromising the
operational safety of our 31 facilities.”
“These decisions are not easy ones to make
and we are sympathetic to the distressing
situations people applying for an emergency
allocation are in. However, we need to balance
each individual application with our critical
work to ensure the safety of all New Zealanders
and the limited available capacity in managed
isolation facilities by sequencing beds as they
become available. MIQ also needs to prioritise
the applications to ensure they reflect the most
urgent and time-critical situations,” the MIQ
spokesperson said.
18,000 essential skills visas
to be extended by one year
IWK BUREAU
Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi
has announced extension of the
duration of some Essential Skills
visas from the current 12-month
period to 24-month period.
This will also impact the
Accredited Employer work visa that
was supposed to start in November
this year, which will now be delayed
till mid next year. The Government
is also streamlining the application
process to provide more certainty
to employers and visa holders while
COVID border restrictions remain in
place.
“We recognise the ongoing labour
demand pressures faced by some
sectors and we want to make the most
of the skills we have in the country.
So the Government is making it
easier for businesses to continue
employing their current migrant
workers,” Minister of Immigration
Kris Faafoi said
From Monday 19 July, the
maximum duration of Essential
Skills visas, for jobs paid below the
median wage, will increase from 12
months to 24 months. The maximum
duration of Essential Skills visas for
jobs paid above the median wage is
already three years.
The application process for
Essential Skills visas will also be
simplified for workers remaining in
their current roles.
Employers won’t be required to
complete a labour market test where
a worker is applying for a visa for
a full time role which the worker
already holds. These applicants also
won’t need to provide medical and
police certificates to Immigration
New Zealand if that information has
been supplied previously.
A labour market test will still be
required where employers are filling
a job vacancy to prove there are no
New Zealanders available before a
migrant worker can be hired. This
is in line with the Government’s
objective to ensure Kiwis are
prioritised for jobs.
“These changes complement the
recent extension we granted for
around 10,000 Working Holiday
and Supplementary Seasonal
Employment visa holders,” Kris
Faafoi said.
“The Government is listening to
business concerns,” said Tourism
Minister, Stuart Nash.
“COVID support previously
rolled out to businesses has
been designed to keep workers
connected to employers and keep
tourism businesses operating while
international borders are closed.
The decision to extend Essential
Skills visas and simplify application
processes is the next step, and will
be welcomed by sectors like tourism
and hospitality where employers are
keen to retain their current migrant
workers,” Stuart Nash said.
The Immigration Minister said
these Essential Skills visa changes
would be temporary measures to
support employers in the unique
COVID-19 situation and were part
of the Government’s ongoing review
of border settings to balance New
Zealand’s economic needs with the
successful COVID health response
that has kept the virus out of our
communities.
Extending Essential Skills visas
to last two years means the new
Accredited Employer Work Visa,
which was due to come into effect on
1 November, will be delayed until the
middle of next year. An update will
be provided as soon as an exact date
is confirmed.
“The Government remains
committed to the Accredited
Employer Work Visa, which
will ensure work visas issued reflect
genuine regional skill shortages and
strengthen labour market testing.
However, we expect most Essential
Skills visa holders will apply for
this two-year visa, meaning the
implementation of the Accredited
Employer Work scheme would not be
viable because of likely low uptake.
“Employers will be kept updated
on any further changes and more
detailed guidance on the new system
ahead of the introduction of the
Accredited Employer Work Visa next
year,” Kris Faafoi said.

Friday, July 16, 2021
The Indian Weekender
'Allocation of MIQ spaces for migrant
workers,' could be one of the fixes for staff
shortage says Restaurant Association chief
PARIDHI BAKSHI
Restaurant Association of New Zealand’s
Chief Executive Officer Marisa Bidois
is proposing to the government that
allocation of some MIQ spaces for migrant
workers for the hospitality industry could be
one possible solution to address the burgeoning
crisis in front of the industry.
Bidois spoke with the Indian Weekender
about the staff-shortage crisis issue, the
government’s response, and suggestions in
some quarters that the industry was not treating
its workers, particularly migrant workers, in
a kind and compassionate manner, therefore
further triggering the exodus of workers from
the industry.
Bidois acknowledged that the industry
could and should do more to give its
workers a long career option and in fact,
suggested that there was a wider recognition
and willingness within the sector to do
more on this.
However, she was absolutely clear that the
staff shortage crisis was real despite suggestions
from many quarters, including the government,
that there were enough locals to work in the
sector. Here are excerpts of the interview with
Maisa Bidois.
IWK: Can you tell us more about the
Lights-out campaign that your Association
has spearheaded?
MB: It is part of the larger campaign called
“Reset”, which is about raising awareness about
the skill shortage in the hospitality industry.
Currently, we are taking few different types of
approaches to the issue, and the lights out were
one of the things we were doing.
It involved hospitality businesses gathering
together to turn their lights out for two minutes
to have an opportunity to talk about the issues
not only with the customers but also to raise
this issue with the government.
IWK: What was the outcome? Did it
manage to make any impact?
MB: We had a very positive response so far.
We are now in touch now with the Immigration
Minister’s office, and we are seeking out
sometimes to catch up with the Minister.
So often the hospitality is at the bottom of the
heap in terms of attention so it really did the job
of raising awareness about the issue it certainly
will solve the problems.
IWK: Do you think that the government
is actually listening?
MB: At this stage, I would say no… they
probably haven’t been listening to what we are
saying. They haven’t understood the challenges
of the business.
However, I am going to give them the benefit
of the doubt because we are being given the
opportunity to be heard. To me an opportunity
to be heard is really important.
Whether we get what we want is a different
thing. I am pragmatic about that, but it is so
important for businesses across the country, and
their concerns are being heard.
IWK: A lot of people say that the hospitality
sector does not pay employees
enough? Is that one of the reasons for
the labour shortage as well?
MB: Right now, we’re in a unique
environment. We have closed borders because
of Covid.
The environment is not what it was a few
years ago, so to a way for hospitality is really
missing the point because right now, it’s not
just hospitality facing the labour shortage but
also other industries who’re struggling with the
same issue.
However, if we look into the long term
strategy in our business, we will definitely
review and assume that people in hospitality as
important career options, and so in order to do
that, we need to constantly listen to the people
who are working within the industry.
IWK: What solutions industry is
proposing to the government to fix the
problem?
MB: One of the few things we have been
proposing is that we think immigration policies
play a crucial role in supporting us through this
difficult time.
One of the things we put on the table we
like to see an automated extension of
the visas that are currently in New
Zealand.
We think instead of having people
re-applying for their visas, that is an
easy way to reassure us that a certain
percentage of labour for hospitality
and for other industries across
the country.
These are great people we have
in our country and are doing great
work for respective industries.
Why not look at it that way and have those
people staying for longer. We also need some
MIQ spaces allocated to the hospitality as
well, those are just a few things, and these
are immediate solutions.
The Mourning
After; no walk
of shame for
NZ Sri Lankan
director
SANDEEP SINGH
Noted stage director Ahi Karunaharan
is coming up with his second show
extolling his Kiwi-Sri Lankan identity
The Mourning After, after having brought first
such show almost a decade ago.
The Mourning After, which explores the
complicated relationship many Sri Lankan New
Zealanders have with their original homes — a
home that most were forced to flee from. Ahi
first wrote the play 13 years ago when he wasn’t
able to return due to the war, and it’s gained
a fresh relevance today as much of South Asia
struggles with the terrible COVID.
Another thing the play looks into is the
problem for many Sri Lankan where their stories
are often conveniently bundled together with
other South Asian nations — The Mourning
After seeks to rectify some of that as a proudly
Sri Lankan story.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender Ahi
Karunaharan said, “If I had a dollar for every
time a white guy called me Indian I could put a
deposit on a three bedroom Sandringham villa.”
"It’s
one of those
strange nations
where time just kind of
moves in a very different
way to the rest of the world,
and that’s the kind of thing
that lends itself to our
way of story-
As a student back in 2007,
Ahi realised the stage was telling"
reflecting the New Zealand he
lived in, where Sri Lankan and other
South Asian stories were being conveniently
bundled together, and their individual voices
muffled as a result.
Instead of blaming people for wilful
ignorance, he decided to focus on what
he could change, and in 2011 brought his
first distinctly Sri Lankan show to the
Wellington stage, The Mourning After.
“I think the voice of the Sri Lankan experience
is very unique and very different as an island
nation. It is isolated from the greater kind of
South and Southeast Asia in the sense that
it’s got its own rhythm, its own pace, its own
nuances, its own style.”
“It’s one of those strange nations where time
just kind of moves in a very different way to the
rest of the world, and that’s the kind of thing
that lends itself to our way of storytelling.”
This first show was an exploration of his own
Sri Lankan identity at a time when the country
was being ravaged by war, and returning home
wasn’t possible.
It’s found new relevance today,
against the backdrop of a global
pandemic.
The Mourning After follows New Zealand
born Shekar, who returns to his father’s
homeland in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri
Lanka, to discover that a tsunami has swept
away the village.
As Shekar sifts through the ruins in search
of answers, what follows is a journey of self
discovery as the buried truths of his past are
revealed.
Karunaharan has moved away from
Bollywood style he explored through last
year’s My Heart Goes Thadak Thadak, using
one solo actor, a band of 4 musicians and nontraditional
narrative storytelling.
“What I want to do is have conversations with
people and have those conversations in different
ways. I’m trying to offer up alternatives that
could really spark the imagination and really
become a memorable time that can really
engage audiences in a new way”
An adaptation of the original work, first
performed by Ahi himself, rising young actor
Jehangir Homavazir carries the role with a
fresh energy and perspective, accompanied by
a trio of deft hands in South Asian music.
“I’m at a point in my career where it’s really
important for me to continue to create stories
for my community, because no one else is
going to do that for us, and by doing so I get
to collaborate and put more South Asian actors
and creatives on our stages.”
While some things might have changed since
Ahi first composed the work a decade ago, the
need for better, more representative art has not.
“I trained as an actor but had to come into
writing and directing for stage because I was
exhausted at the lack of opportunities there was
then, and is still now.
The characters and briefs were painfully
one-dimensional – the roles were mostly
taxi drivers, dairy owners, doctors, mystical
storytellers, gurus and most of the time, a token
character there to tick the diversity box.”
The Mourning After does exactly that as
it takes audiences on a voyage across seas,
personal awakenings, and across cultural lines.
NEW ZEALAND 9
Bhartiya Samaj seniors
celebrates Matariki
IWK BUREAU
Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust, in
collaboration with Roopa Aur Aap
Charitable trust, celebrated the
Maori New Year “Matariki” on Saturday,
July 10, during the Bhartiya Samaj
Seniors meeting at Mount Roskill War
Memorial Hall.
The celebrations commenced with
traditional rituals of all the Bhartiya Samaj
meetings followed by the Chair, Jeet
Suchdev QSM JP, welcoming the members
and wishing each on the occasion of Maori
New Year.
Matariki is the Maori celebration of New
Year, celebrated on the first new moon after
the appearance of the Matariki star.
To celebrate this important festival, a
‘Kapa-Haka’ group from Te Kura Kaupapa
Maori A Rohe o Mangere were invited to
give a few insights about the festival and
its importance.
Speaking to the Indian Weekender,
Jeet Suchdev said, “The group shared
the significance and story of the Matariki
through traditional Maori dances and
songs.”
“Our senior members enjoyed and were
delighted to learn about the traditional
Maori story, the names of the stars and how
each star influences the land and the sea and
the wellbeing,” Mr Suchdev said.
“Towards the end, the group taught a
few dance steps to Senior members on
which they danced enthusiastically. Seniors
were ecstatic to learn the new dance form
of the Maori culture and came forward to
have an enlightening discussion about the
similarities in Indian and Maori culture and
heritage,” Mr Suchdev said.
This was followed by members singing
and dancing to their favourite Bollywood
songs.
Expressing thanks to all performers
and guests on occasion, Roopa Suchdev
said, “We are very grateful to the ‘Kapa-
Haka’ group, our volunteers and beloved
members for making this celebration a
memorable event.”
'Dealing with an inconsistent
immigration system,' biggest pain story
shared at Auckland Migrant protest
• From Page 3
This has further exacerbated the plight of tens of
thousands of temporary work visa holders currently
onshore who meet required points for submitting
EOI and have still chosen not to submit an
application as it requires a lot of money to invest,
and the government is unsure of when to start and
streamline the process.
Varun Deewan, one of the temporary migrant
workers present at the protest, told the Indian
Weekender that he has been in the country for the
last five years and working as a chef with enough
points for EOI and was reluctant to file a new
application.
“Apart from the normal fee required by
Immigration New Zealand, which would be in
thousands of dollars [for him and his wife], there
will be an additional immigration lawyer fees
which is a separate thousand of dollars,” Deewan
said.
“This unsure government can anytime choose
to return money [immigration fee and levy] after
letting us languish in the processing queue for years
and years. But how will we get back immigration
lawyer’s fees,” Deewan said frustratingly.
Many other temporary migrants at the protest
also shared similar sentiments that they are feeling
“suffocated” after having made New Zealand as
their choice for skilled migration destination.
“When we start our migrant journey as a
temporary migrant and seek long term goal of
becoming a permanent resident in the country after
working and contributing in the country’s economy
and society, migrants, in general, need to see long
term certainty and a clear plan around immigration
rules,” Gurdeep, another protesting migrant said.
“But my experience of last four years in New
Zealand has been very confusing, archaic and
uncertain, as I don’t know if the government want
us to come or not,”
“We have come to the country based on the
immigration policy and settings, and in New
Zealand’s case, it is continuously changing,”
Gurdeep said.
Towards the end the organisers of the protest
avowed to plan more such protests in coming
months to demand affirmative action from the
government.
Dinesh
I cannot praise and thank Rachana enough for her guidance and
assistance in helping me be the first time investor in this market at
the time of pandemic. It was totally unbelievable.
The whole process of loan approval and activation was so hassle
free, all I had to do was talk to Rachana about my situation and
preferences, and fill in just a couple of forms. The next thing I know
is that I had a loan approval letter in hand which put me way ahead
in the big queue of property bidders. The next major thing that I
was spellbound about was the competitively best interest rate that
Rachana got me. I so wish I had gone to Rachana for my previous,
first home loan…I would have saved so much.
Ramya
I highly recommend Rachana not just for getting you into the
housing market, but the way she understands your situation,
presents new financial perspectives, guides you
through this whole process and finally saves your
hard earned money for YOU.
Thanks Rachana for helping me.

After 23 years spent in senior
management with major banking
players, Mr Ajay Kumar set out
to deliver something better to Kiwis.
He launched Global Finance in 1999 with one
vision: to help New Zealanders get ahead. That
meant helping get the finance they needed to get
buy property and further their business goals,
but he also wanted to do more. Using his insider
banking knowledge, he set out to support clients
to save on their loans, by avoiding unnecessary
interest and getting mortgage-free faster.
With insurance added to the mix, Global
Finance was onto a winning formula.
Since our beginning, we’ve helped some
customers become mortgage-free in as little as
7 years rather than the standard 30-year term
often offered by banks.
We’ve helped over 7000 families to secure
over $11 billion in home loans and insurance
policies. We have maintained an almost perfect
average star rating of 4.9/5 across over 1500
customer reviews
“When I started this business, I had a vision
to support all New Zealanders, who valued
financial advice, with my banking and insurance
knowledge. I couldn’t understand why there was
so little education and knowledge regarding the
types of financial instruments like mortgages
and insurance that are part of people’s daily life.
I wanted Global Finance customers to know
more and consequently have better financial
can spend more time on the important stuff - like getting to know
you, and walking you through every step.
More lending solutions than anyone else
We’ve got relationships with all the major banks and we’re
totally unbiased (this is more unusual than you might think). And
more options? That adds up to better rates and better solutions.
We don’t charge for our service
In most cases our service is free. We’ve been doing this for
over 12 years and settled over $8 billion in mortgages so yep, our
advisers have seen it all.
Staff-shortage in hospitalityindustry:
Govt needs to act
decisively and show a plan
than making assertions
The government needs to act decisively and show how it plans to fix “staff-shortage” in New
Zealand’s hospitality industry than just making assumptions and assertions.
Among many assertions that the government has made, one is that there are “enough
Kiwis to work,” and another related assertion that does not necessarily come from the government
but appears to be tacitly supported is “provided employers are willing to pay locals nicely.
For quite some time, such bold assumptions have been floating around that there are enough
motivated Kiwis willing to work in different sectors of the New Zealand economy, which remains
unsubstantiated with appropriate data and research.
Notwithstanding such assumptions, often reverberated on social media, businesses, particularly
small businesses, continue to reel under the challenge of dealing with staff-shortage – with the
situation escalating in different sectors at different times.
Currently, New Zealand’s hospitality sector is facing an unprecedented staff shortage forcing
many businesses to downsize operations, winding up operations or reducing the number of hours
of operations to remain viable.
This is, unfortunately, happening at a time when more Kiwis are willing to dine out or takeaway,
thus showing their support to the sector after a disastrous 2020.
Notably, the hospitality sector was the single biggest sector that took the biggest hit during
successive lockdowns for being identified as the biggest threat of mass gathering and potential
spread of the Covid-19 virus, thus more adversely affecting the sector than others.
The government, which is riding high on popularity for its Covid-19 management, has so far not
responded to the sector’s concern with much confidence.
New Zealand’s café and restaurant sector contributes around $12 billion to the economy and
employs more than 100,000 people.
The sector has been facing a shortage of staff for quite some time, increasing its reliance on
migrant labour, including both on holiday visas and those in the country on skilled work visas.
However, the situation has started to worsen after the beginning of the Covid pandemic in March
2020 and the accompanying border closure.
The issue has gained media attention only recently, particularly after the recent open letter written
to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the Restaurant Association’s lights-off campaign last week.
Responding to media probing on the issue, on 6th July, Prime Minister Ardern had said, “I am
aware of those issues, and we as a Cabinet have discussed what can we do in the face of what are
areas of very genuine need.
“We know there’s a lot of pressure, we’re in a situation where it’s hard to bring in labour and also
many are saying they’re hard to find domestically so I hear that.”
“She said the government had already extended visas for people who are untrained and the
government was again considering the possibility.
“Alongside continuing to encourage sectors to try and access and train New Zealand’s domestic
workforce, at the same time we acknowledge in some areas they have done a lot of work and are
still struggling so we’ll have more to say on that in the not-too-distant future,” Ardern said.
The above response is a classic example of a listening, acknowledging, and responding approach
– borrowed from any sales script – designed to demonstrate active listening and empathetic response
on the part of those involved.
Indeed, this is a reasonably accepted demonstration of good communication skills.
However, policymaking and public governance is slightly more than just “good communication
skills.”
It is about remaining ahead of the curve and working with different sector stakeholders in finding
solutions affecting them the most.
Every time a sector cries for the shortage of workforce, an accompanied voice gains traction that
asserts that “importing migrant workers from overseas is not the solution to the problem.”
Indeed, such grandstanding is often contemptuous towards migrant workers who work
exceptionally hard under constantly changing immigration rules in this country to pursue the dream
of Kiwi life.
However, regardless, these kinds of assertions are also accompanied by calls for a complete
“reset” of the sector (we have already heard calls of reset in hospo-sector, immigration sector etc.)
– which, though, sounds moral and intellectual grandstanding – means nothing.
At least, the government has not been able to follow up such grandstanding around “resets” with
a clear and achievable plan so far.
While managing borders and MIQ facilities in a manner to keep New Zealand safe from Covid
is the government’s top priority, it should also be equally committed to find solutions for small
businesses reeling with staff shortage and ensure access to workers.
Despite the popular assumption that some sectors are notoriously aligned towards the migrant
workforce, restaurant owners are not just crying for migrant labours – as anyway they are costlier
to the business as per new immigration rules, which require them to pay an exorbitant $27 p/h.
All they are asking for is access to willing and available workers for their respective business
operations.
If the government thinks there are enough willing local work force, then it has to do little more
handholding and find ways to improve restaurant business’s access to workforce – because the
sector is critically short of workforce.
With many children now getting
With many children now getting
COVID-19 in Fiji and an unfortunate
death of a 15-year-old girl from
COVID, Head of the Vaccination Taskforce,
Doctor Rachel Devi says discussions continue
on which vaccines will be approved for
children.
While speaking on the fijivillage Straight
Talk with Vijay Narayan, Doctor Devi says
children make one-third of our population as
they are looking into this issue with agencies
like the WHO.
Doctor Devi says all efforts should be made
to protect our children and for now all eligible
adults in a household should ensure they get
vaccinated to reduce the risk for the children
living with them.Permanent Secretary for
Health, Doctor James Fong says the 15-yearold
from Colo-I-Suva was declared dead on
arrival by the attending medical officer at the
Raiwaqa Health Centre.
He says this means that she either died at
home or on her way to the health facility.
Her family reported that she had
been feeling unwell for 2 days.
Her symptoms included cough,
shortness of breath and
chest pain.
She was not vaccinated
as she was not in the
target population of
people 18 years and over
that are eligible to receive
the vaccine.
The COVID-19 vaccines are
safe for most people 18 years and older,
including those with pre-existing conditions of
any kind, including auto-immune disorders.
These conditions include: hypertension,
diabetes, asthma, pulmonary, liver and kidney
disease, as well as chronic infections that are
stable and controlled.
The WHO says children and adolescents tend
to have milder disease compared to adults, so
NZ stands by Fiji in difficult times
New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda
Ardern is ready to provide support
to Fiji to contain the widespread
transmission of COVID-19. Ardern has ordered
her Foreign Affairs Minister to liaise with Fiji
in terms of the required assistance.
She says New Zealand is standing by Fiji in
the current difficult times.
“I have advised the foreign Ministry and
Trade to reach again to Fiji and just ask about
specific medical equipment and whether or not
there are needs there that we can supply and
provide for what I know very overburdened
hospitals and health facilities.”
Ardern says she feels for Fiji and the situation
of her people.
She had earlier highlighted that they are
ready to offer support and advice through
their experience, to help in the containment of
COVID-19.
unless they are part of a group at higher risk of
severe COVID-19, it is less urgent to vaccinate
them than older people, those with chronic
health conditions and health workers.
It says more evidence is needed on
the use of the different COVID-19
vaccines in children to be able to
make general recommendations
on vaccinating children against
COVID-19.
WHO's Strategic Advisory Group of
Experts (SAGE) has concluded that the
Pfizer/BionTech vaccine is suitable for use
by people aged 12 years and above.
It says children aged between 12 and 15 years
who are at high risk may be offered this vaccine
alongside other priority groups for vaccination.
Vaccine trials for children are ongoing and
WHO will update its recommendations when
the evidence or epidemiological situation
warrants a change in policy.
Sahaja Yoga: Thoughts, how to slow
Thoughts come and go, come
and go. Many times, thoughts
don’t go away when we want
them to. Have you ever awoken in
the middle of the night?
I’ve heard many people complain
of that. After the usual attempts to
go back to sleep – herbal teas or
perhaps something stronger, sleep
does arrive.
The usual culprit to blame
for the inability to sleep, are
unwanted thoughts.
These thoughts are not only
unwanted, but many times it is
difficult to stop the steady stream of
these thoughts.
The relationship between the nature
of our thoughts and our feelings of
peace is the subject of many different
forums and self-help groups. But is
controlling our thoughts by yet more
thoughts the way to go? Positive
thinking is definitely better than
negative thinking. But not thinking
at all, especially when wanting reach
a state of peace and balance, must be
the answer.
“Be quiet in your mind, quiet in
your senses, and also quiet in your
body. Then, when all these are quiet,
don’t do anything. In that state Truth
will reveal itself to you.” — Kabir
It almost seems ironic that the
truth is revealed without engaging
the brain! But over the years I feel
fortunate to have found out for
myself that this is true, by practicing
meditation. In fact, this is one of the
many benefits of meditation, being
able to control these thoughts.
When practicing Sahaja Yoga
meditation, I am able to reach a state
described as thoughtless awareness.
This is an awareness beyond the
mind, beyond the thoughts. It can be
practiced any time. Yes, I do sit down
to meditate twice a day – morning
and evening.
Also, I love looking at beautiful
things in nature – a flower, a tree, a
the bustling brain and the role of nature
beautiful scene.
It is at these times the thoughts
disappear and I enter into a
profound state of peace
contentedness and
connectedness.
The human mind
is always bombarded
with thoughts. It
builds the ego and it
reacts with it.
Those
who
are conditioned are
frightened people.
These thoughts come from the past
or from the future, but reality is in the
present where we achieve peace.
"Be
quiet in your
mind, quiet in your
senses, and also quiet in
your body. Then, when all
these are quiet, don’t do
anything. In that state
Truth will reveal itself
to you"
The mind creates all
the problems for an
individual or for
the collective.
One has to go
beyond the mind
into thoughtless
awareness, where
there is peace.
Shri Mataji Nirmala
Devi, from “Meta
Modern Era”
When in that state of meditation
our reactions, by way of thoughts,
slow or stop altogether. This state can
be your sanctuary. This sanctuary is
available at any time, when trying to
sleep, when at work, when at home.
The best is out in nature. Nature is
uncomplicated and beautiful and has
its own natural vibration.
I love going to places of beauty in
New Zealand. We are so lucky here.
Please see a photo of a favourite place
near Rotorua where my thoughts
always stop completely and I feel a
connection with nature.
Auckland and in fact throughout
New Zealand, we are never far
from the sea.
The sea has its own beautiful
rhythms and beauty, no matter what
the weather.
Since long, people have sought the
solace of nature because we naturally
find our balance in nature and even
our inspiration.
We naturally respond to
the elements from which we
have been created.
Enjoy looking at nature
without thinking!
Next time you are out in about,
in the bush, by the sea or looking at
something of natural beauty, see if
you can absorb the beauty without
thoughts. And enjoy your meditation.
NEW ZEALAND 15
AAO KABHI HAVELI PE: A locally produced
horror-comedy movie to hit theatres in September
SANDEEP SINGH
Santhosh Tukkapuram, the director and
producer of the upcoming movie Aao
Kabhi haveli pe is excited to release the
film in September and is expecting a favourable
response from the movie-buffs and the Kiwi-
Indian community.
On Monday, July 12, Santosh and the other
Director/producer Madhuri Thota met with
High Commissioner of India Muktesh Pardeshi
along with the entire cast of the movie to share
the film production journey in New Zealand.
The Hindi movie is produced and shot
entirely in New Zealand with local artists.
Speaking with the Indian Weekender,
Santosh said, “This movie is of the horrorcomedy
genre.
"It tells a story of how the eight main
characters of the movie get stuck in a haunted
house and experience funny situations.”
“The movie was launched in December
2020 with regular shooting started in January
this year.”
six months and are now in the post-production
Deputy PM Grant Robertson
calls for 'immigration reset'
RNZ
New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister
Grant Robertson on Tuesday called
for “an immigration reset”, while
outlining a road ahead for the post-Covid
economy.
Robertson, also the Finance Minister, said
parts of the business sector have become too
reliant on continued access to low skilled
labours, and there have been fewer incentives
to increase productivity through investment in
capital and new technologies, reports Xinhua
news agency.
It is the “right time for an immigration reset”,
he said in his speech to the Trans-Tasman
Business Circle.
“Immigration has long contributed socially,
culturally and economically to New Zealand,
and our society is better for it. It can be an
important source of skilled labor and new ideas,
helping to boost innovation and productivity,”
he said.
Robertson said the government wants to
work with businesses as to how they can attract
new workers, whether that is by improving
pay and conditions, being more flexible about
fitting work around childcare obligations or
helping workers fulfil their potential by helping
them access skills and training.
“We will work with industries and businesses
to support the upskilling of our workforce,”
he said, citing a few of the government’s
active labour market policies such as the Free
Apprenticeships program, the reinstatement
of the Training Incentive Allowance, the Flexi
Wage Program, among others.
Talking about the current unbalanced
development, Robertson said,: “Too much
of our economic expansion was based on
unsustainable increases in house prices, and
high levels of population growth. This has
been to the detriment of our economic stability,
creaking infrastructure and levels of wealth
inequality.
“Too many jobs were created in the lowwage
economy and not enough of our firms
are exporting into international markets or
developing new technologies and products at
the global frontier.”
New Zealand’s road ahead includes increasing
productivity through large scale investment in
skills, research and innovation, infrastructure,
building international connections and reforms
of critical underpinnings of productivity such
as planning, water and immigration systems,
he added.
DIY Ghee masks: A moisture
surge for dry skin, and hair
The long-established ghee is a staple
in the Indian kitchen for its laudable
nutritional benefits but is it limited to
households in Asia alone? To give you a basic
scoop, ghee is powdered with vitamins and
antioxidants that improve digestion, functioning
of the immune system, skin and hair health. Try
and consume at least 1-2 tablespoons of ghee
every day on an empty stomach or through the
food you cook.
We’ve seen what the inclusion of clean
beauty products can do to us. While harshchemical-based
products are slowly being
popping off in markets with the emergence of
safe-to-use ingredients, it’s best to keep your
skincare and haircare as fuss-free as you can.
Get your much-needed care from these DIYs
masks.
For dry skin
Ingredients:
• 1/2 tbsp organic ghee
• 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
• A pinch of turmeric (for a natural glow)
Procedure:
Mix both the ingredients and apply the
creamy mixture on cleansed face and neck.
Repeat this twice a week to prevent skin
dryness.
For dark circles
Ingredients:
• 1 tsp ghee
• 1/2 tsp potato juice
Procedure:
Take a cotton swab and dip it into the blended
mixture. Dab it on your under-area and wash it
off after 20 minutes.
For pigmented and dry lips
Ingredients:
• 1 tsp ghee
• 1/2 tsp beetroot juice
• 2 drops jojoba oil
Procedure:
Make the lip mask and use your fingertips to
spread it on your lips. Massage it for 2 mins
so it seeps into your lips keeping it super moist
and soft. Whip this up twice a week for better
results.
For under-nourished hair
Ingredients:
• 2 tbsp ghee
• 1 tbsp coconut milk
• 2 tbsp aloe vera gel
Procedure:
Combine the ingredients and stir them to
form a hair mask. Use the paste to coat your
hair strands and rinse them off with cold water
after 30 minutes.
