In that case, you should probablymove away from your hometown as soon as possible.“Saturday Night Fever” is a gritty drama about a young manwho learns how lousy his community is.The community in question is Bay Ridge: a not-so-niceneighborhood in Brooklyn, right across from Staten Island.The movie follows a few meaningful weeks in the younglife of Tony Monero (John Travolta).Tony is 19, he lives with his parents, and he works at ahardware store.He has nothing going for him. But, boy, can he dance.The only thing that matters to Tony is Friday night with hisidiot friends at the local disco. Tony practices his disco movesand it has paid off. He is the king of the floor and womenthrow themselves at him.The dance scenes in “Saturday Night Fever” haven’t aged aday. Young Travolta still looks amazingly cool.Outside the disco, Tony isn’t doing as well.His home life is miserable. The Moneros are a stereotypical2nd generation Italian family. There’s the eldest son who cando no wrong. There’s Tony who can do no right. And there’sthe daughter. The proposed rail investments in the AmericanJobs Plan will allow more Vermonters an alternate formof public transportation for work and travel. The investmentswill also enhance the state’s transportation resiliency whilereducing our reliance on fossil fuels. My most sincere congratulationsto Amtrak as well as federal, state and communityleaders for today’s resumption of service. In Bay Ridge, young women are valuedso little that they end up degrading themselves. And after theyhave degraded themselves, the young men just shake theirheads and move on to someone else.Some of those young men are Tony’s friends. The filmexplores Tony’s awakening as he slowly realizes that the guyshe hangs out with are racist sexist losers.In the climax, Tony wins the big dance contest but he is farfrom happy about it. It is plain as day that he was only the bestwhite dancer; the Hispanic couple deserved to win but they areeffectively ineligible because of their race. At this point, Tonyknows that he has to leave his family, his friends, and his toxicneighborhood behind.At its core, “Saturday Night Fever” is the anti-“Rocky.”“Rocky” is the feel-good story of an Italian guy from an ethnicneighborhood who grows up to be a decent man and makes itbig. “Saturday Night Fever” is the grim tale of an Italian guyfrom an ethnic neighborhood who is on the road to nowhereuntil he realizes that he has to get out.It must be kept in mind about how there is a much highercost, including financially and also in human terms, associatedwith doing nothing.Bringing about actual change to what has sadly becomeaccepted as being the status quo would also require no longerplacing blame on unhoused individuals and families for theircircumstances and treating them as if they are the problem;rather, people who are living unhoused should be regardedand treated as being part of the solution and, if they are ableand willing to do so, invited to be the primary member of ateam working with them in order to help them become permanentlyhoused.It might not be easy or simple to achieve, but it remainsdoable all the same.Morgan W. Brown previously lived unhoused for manyyears of his life, including twelve years without permanenthousing during the last go around. He has been permanentlyhoused in Central Vermont for nearly twelve years.
