To the generous parishioners of St. Monica,
On behalf of the Blessed Trinity Food Pantry, I would like to
thank you for the generous donation of food and cash at the
Thanksgiving Day Mass. Due to the increased number of people
needing food in November, our previous shipment of food from
Hunger Task Force was nearly depleted. Our cash on hand was at
its lowest point in years. I was planning to cut back considerably
on what we would distribute at our first pantry date in December.
However, the food we collected from the Mass was sufficient to
get us through that week. The check we received later in the
month (awesome!) will keep our cash needs going for two to
three months. On behalf of the people fed through your
generosity, we are so thankful.
Sincerely,
Buck Carter, Blessed Trinity Food Pantry Director
St. Monica Parish Whitefish Bay
We all remember well Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger’s homily given just before the conclave that would elect him
pope. He defined the chief challenge facing the Catholic Church at that time as “a dictatorship of relativism.”
That message cut to the heart of the matter, but it also flew in the face of contemporary secular “wisdom.”
The conventional assumption is this: A rejection of objective truth, a denial of truths that are independent of time,
place, or culture. This is a dismissal, in other words, of exceptionless moral norms, ethical absolutes, or universal
Christian obligations.
On the contrary, the Church claims the right to speak – in the middle of the public square – against the exploitation
of the weak, the denial of just wages, violence in the family, the neglect of the elderly and the young, hatred, unjust
discrimination, going to war for unjust or insufficiently just reasons, or waging a just war unjustly, ignoring the afflicted, the poor, the
helpless, the unborn, and those who have nowhere (and maybe no country) to lay their heads.
We should not be surprised by the Church’s conviction that she and her members are bound to bring transcendent values into the public
square. A healthy balance between religious expression and religious freedom is a major part of our national story. What would the
civil rights movement have been, for example, without the Black Church? Numerous similar examples abound throughout history.
These are a few of the thoughts along the lines of which Cardinal Ratzinger gave that final homily in St. Peter’s before becoming
Benedict XVI. I happened to be there, close to the front, and I will never forget it. I sat there, a seminarian, wondering which of the
men across the aisle from me would become only the second pope I would have ever known.
On his way in from the city, Ratzinger made his way back to the sacristy where he would vest to concelebrate the conclave’s opening
Mass as Dean of the College of Cardinals. Our entire seminary was present, and he stopped to chat with us, give us his blessing, and
ask for our prayers.
During that Mass he said: “To have a clear faith, according to the faith of the Church, is often mistaken, sometimes willfully, as
fundamentalism.”
“Relativism, that is to say allowing oneself to be carried away, here and there, by any wind of doctrine, is proposed as the only attitude
suited to modern times.”
And then he spoke the words that were seized upon and reported by the global press: “What’s being constructed is a dictatorship of
relativism which recognizes nothing as definitive, and regards oneself and one’s own desires as the final measure.”
“Freedom,” he insisted, “is not the absence of any restraint on our behavior, but the capacity to become the kind of person God calls us
to be!”
Why Did Jesus Get Baptized?
Peggy Hynes Porter, Director of Child Ministry and 9th/10th Grade Youth Program
Last Sunday our Church celebrated the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Many of our catechists provided lessons
focusing on the Sacrament of Baptism and St. John the Baptist. As I was copying some fun St. John the Baptist
worksheets for some classes, I had a flashback. Suddenly, I remembered posing the following question as a
teenager: “Why did Jesus get baptized when He was God and without sin?”
Back “in the day,” books such as “Catholicism for Dummies” were unavailable to us when these sorts of questions
popped in our young brains. Therefore, I posed the question to my mom, a nun I admired, and a church history
book my parents had on the bookshelves of our den.
This is what I discovered on that quest for an answer….One thing I had not considered was Jesus did not receive the same baptism that
we go through today. Back in Jesus’ day, John the Baptist was calling people to join a new community in which their faith would be
renewed through repentance and a change of heart.
Remember, Jesus had not died on the cross yet, so the saving and redemptive part of today’s sacrament was not possible for the people
of Jesus’ time. John the Baptist was offering a baptism that was more of an entrance rite. By submitting Himself to Baptism, Jesus was
showing us He was embracing His humanity and identifying with sinners.
Next time you witness a baptism, notice there are two parts to the rite – first, the coming into the community and, the later addition, the
remission of sins.
When Jesus came to John to be baptized, even John protested by saying: “I need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to
me?” Jesus replied, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” (Matthew 3:14-15)
So, to answer the initial question I posed as a teen: Jesus voluntarily submitted Himself to Baptism to show publicly that He was
leaving His family and community to accept His Father’s plan to save the human race and begin His ministry. What a powerful
moment Scripture shares with us at the conclusion of the Baptism of Our Lord… “And a voice came from the heavens saying, ‘This is
my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.’ ” (Matthew 3:17)

DEVELOPMENT & STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT
St. Monica School Open House
On Sunday, January 29 th from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., our
“Exemplary Recognition” St. Monica School community will be
holding its annual Open House event. This is a terrific
opportunity to tour our school, meet with school staff and
families, view our students’ outstanding work, and witness
firsthand our school community’s commitment to providing the
very finest in Catholic education. As we prepare for the launch of
Catholic Schools Week, please join in the celebration of our
special role as a Catholic school and the many ways in which St.
Monica School prepares students to make a positive and lasting
difference in the world. And please feel free to bring an interested
friend or prospective family!
If you have any questions or would like additional information,
please contact Tom Mlada, Director of Development &
Stewardship, at (332-3660 ext. 123) or tmlada@st-monica.org.
KADA Youth Group
KADA is an optional, informal youth group that meets to
hang out and talk about issues relating to faith. Anyone in
grades 9-12 is invited and you can bring friends if you want -
you don't need to belong to St. Monica or believe in God to
attend. Everyone is welcome! We will meet every other week
in the Upper Room at St. Monica’s from 7:30-9:30pm. On
Thursdays. Weeks that KADA is not meeting, students are
welcome to organize their own social events (i.e. ice skating,
movie nights, etc.) that are, like all KADA events, open to
everyone. These social events, while publicized through St.
Monica, are not official St. Monica events - mostly because
Jackie doesn't have time to be at all of them. :) Parents are
welcome to join to provide supervision if they wish. Join the
“St. Monica’s KADA” group on Facebook for information
about social events! Contact Jackie Lesperance (964-8780,
ext. 124) with any questions.
I offer my congratulations to the parishioners of
St. Monica Parish for achieving your 2011
Catholic Stewardship Appeal goal of $115,000.00.
St. Monica Parish raised $151,567.00 to help
support important ministries and programs of the
Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
The spirit of giving, in His name, is alive and well in the minds
and heart of you who responded so generously to the call to share
your blessing with others. This strong expression of faith and
unity is to be celebrated.
The achievement of your goal during these challenging times is a
tremendous accomplishment and one for which you should be
extremely proud. Please accept this certificate (at the entrance of
church) of recognition with my deepest gratitude and heartfelt
thanks for a job well done. God bless you.
