Iced Coffee // Frozen Pizza serves 17, michelin-star

courses, prepared by design students from the

University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. The gastronomic

experience includes dishes inspired by Architects,

Product Designers, Fashion Designers, a Graphic

Designer, a Landscape Architect, and a Retail

Merchandiser.

At the beginning of our program, we were all

virtually strangers. Upon arriving at the airport

for our twenty-four hour travel journey, many of

us were meeting for the first time, unsure of what to

expect and unsure of each other. Our study abroad

included an internship with the Italian design firm

Moncada Rangel, an image making course with James

Boyd-Brent, mural work with Carlo Alberto Giardina,

a build experience with Studio Gisto and Francesco

Faccin, and workshops with MADE Academy, directed by

Luca Andreoni and Roberto Clemente.

Working with Luca Andreoni, an Italian photographer

and teacher, our class photographed traces of

American culture that we found throughout Sicily.

Similarities were discovered within daily cultural

experiences, and similarities were also observed

on a personal level. Each project displays Italian

culture seen through the eyes of American students–

–a unique experience while coming out of a global

pandemic and travelling overseas to a new country.

Many Italian locals hadn’t seen or talked with

Americans for over a year, making the experience

that much more memorable. After eight weeks, we have

become regulars at local cafe’s, restaurants, bars,

and stores.

Iced Coffee // Frozen Pizza is a display of finding

traces of America in Italy, home in a new place.

Buon Appetito!

Iced Coffee // Frozen Pizza serve 17 corsi da

stella Michelin, preparati da studenti di design

dell’Università del Minnesota, Twin Cities. L’esperienza

gastronomica include piatti ispirati ad architetti,

product designer, fashion designer, un grafico, un

paesaggista e un commerciante al dettaglio.

All’inizio del nostro programma, eravamo tutti

praticamente degli estranei. All’arrivo all’aeroporto

Andreoni e Roberto Clemente.

Lavorando con Luca Andreoni, fotografo

e insegnante italiano, la nostra classe ha

fotografato tracce della cultura americana

che abbiamo trovato in tutta la Sicilia. Sono

state scoperte somiglianze all’interno delle

esperienze culturali quotidiane e sono state

Dopo otto

settimane, siamo diventati clienti abituali di caffè,

ristoranti, bar e negozi locali.

Iced Coffee // Frozen Pizza è una dimostrazione di

ricerca delle tracce dell’America in Italia, casa in un

posto nuovo.

A collection aiming to study and display

the traffic patterns in the city of Siracusa

at night. Capturing the experience of sitting

and watching traffic in a way that can be

relaxing. The curiosity that drives the mind to

wonder where each vehicle is heading.

Taken using long exposure photography,

the lights move in a blur. The vehicle

is not the subject, but it’s their direction and

journey that is a matter of attention.

Strays, pets

and more...

Morgan mcintrye

A Comparison is made between

the animals in Siricusa and Oritiga

and the animals in the U.S. Maybe

having to do with the pet culture in

both of these places, although it is

clear that Italy did not adopt a pet

culture from the U.S. It is possible

that the U.S. took inspiration from

Italy or Europe as a whole.

Strays, Pets and More...

All over Syracuse and Ortigia, Animals can

be seen wandering around freely. These pictures

show the examples of these animals.

This is an uncommon occurrence in the U.S.,

so this documents the examples in the span

of two months.

Strays, Pets and More...

There are a wide variety of animals

seen throughout Siricusa and Ortigia,

both domestic and stray.

A lot of the animals you see walking around are

well fed. Sometimes they belong to store owners.

In the U.S., as soon as people see a stray dog or

cat they usually call an animal rescue, especially

for dogs since they can be dangerous.

Cats also get called in to shelters, but they are not

usually threatening. There were a fair number of stray

cats around the city. Some of them are strays and

compared to the cats belonging to the store owners

are very thin and sometimes sickly.

being in italy for the postponed

2020 euros was a privilege

that we all got to experience.

as someone who has never

watched a game of soccer in

my life, i found the italians dedication

to their team similar

to my passion for my team at

home- the milwaukee bucks. it

was really easy to adapt to the

crazy environment for the euros,

especially as the bucks are

in the nba finals concurrently. i

got to channel my excitement

for my own team into the italian

national team. after feeling like

sicily is a different planet, this

weekly ritual of watching the

game with hoards of italians became

something familiar for me.

You hope that the struggles you experience in your home country don’t follow you when you

travel...

For me, my mental health struggles manifest themselves as messes that grow around my

living spaces, messes that oftentimes I feel like I have no control over. As I go through my

daily routines and carry out simple tasks such as doing the laundry and cooking, putting my

clothes back and cleaning the dishes become tasks that overwhelm me. By themselves, these

messes are small and rather insignificant, but as they accumulate they become

increasingly difficult to manage.

I took these photos to portray how the messes that grow in my mind as I struggle, are the

very reason why messes begin to appear in my daily life.

6The photos themselves depict the growth of the mess as things become

increasingly confusing in my mind. They show me placing things onto a

desk over time, using more and more objects before returning the others

to their designated places. In the end, this mess isn’t something I am

proud of. Nor is it something that I want to acknowledge. I think one

of the most difficult things to do is admit to yourself and to someone else

that you are struggling. To me, these messes make it obvious. It becomes

increasingly difficult when it becomes apparent that there is no escaping

these mental health issues. Despite choosing to turn my back on the

mess, one day I must face it.
