The route becomes the destination on the classic scenic routes of the Swiss Travel System. It is the actual hours spent travelling, which hardly ever seem to be enough. Sitting comfortably alongside a window, you become entirely transfixed by the beauty outside. And yet, didn’t we just see the wide expanse of a lake? And now, after the tunnel, the train is passing through a mountain forest, crossing bold bridges over rushing brooks. Mountains tower on the left and right. Each of the following classic scenic routes also offers these characteristics: a change from one region, one culture to another. A contrast in landscapes, colours, climates. Sitting by the windows of the red trains of the Rhaetian Railway, you won’t cease to be mesmerized in Graubünden. This railway doesn’t simply travel through the landscape, it’s actually a part of it. The railway and landscape engage in a practically magical dialogue, as they do here at Lake Bianco at Bernina Pass height. It isn’t without reason that the beautiful route “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula / Bernina landscape” has been entered onto the UNESCO World Heritage list. 9
