In every conversation about anew product, new factory set-up or newsupplier agreement, companies must thinkabout how they can create a positiveimpact, environmental and otherwise.The CPOs we interviewed shared astrong conviction that sustainability candeliver top line results. As one said:“Plastic waste can be used for feedstock.Other waste products are just waiting tobe used in other innovative ways.”Creative and innovative approaches arerequired to identify these opportunities.Incentivising suppliersSupply chain transparency is key for thesustainable future of process industries.With consumers increasingly demandingfull transparency for their products,process companies need to take a leadin establishing clear, transparentreporting systems throughout theirmanufacturing and supply chains.It is vital to work with suppliers toadvance a sustainability agenda. Withinchemical industries, sustainability mostlysits within procurement and raw materialsare often 40-50% of a company’s costs.The industry has an opportunity to greatlyinfluence sustainability, from strategy toVermeulen - SQ will bethe next must-haveleadership skilloperations, by holding themselves andsuppliers accountable.Supporting suppliers in this processcan also lead to better and more fruitfulpartnerships, joint R&D projects andtechnology development. One executivesaid: “We trained our suppliers and putjoint objectives in place, especiallyaround reducing plastics, and 40% ofour sustainability objectives will be in thesupplier’s hands by 2030.”Importantly, companies need to lookdeep into their supply chains and not justfocus on their direct suppliers. Theyshould be hands-on with vendors,especially suppliers of minerals.During COVID, process industrycompanies have had to support theirsuppliers even more. Some negotiatedreduced or flexible payment terms toprotect their suppliers’ cash flow. Oneinterviewee noted: “One positiveoutcome is that COVID has strengthenedour communication and relationshipswith our suppliers, which will enablequicker decision-making down the line.”Incentivising executives & teamsMany of the CPOs highlighted that theyare already sourcing sustainableproducts themselves and are willing topay a premium for them. So, most mayalready be internally motivated to meetsustainability targets. Many companieshave linked around 20% of executivepay to sustainability key performanceindicators in recent years and all seesustainability as a key driver for futureexecutive bonus payout.Out of the 29 companies weresearched, 79% have concrete salarytargets in place that are linked tosustainability goals. This could be relatedto their results on waste, water and/orenergy, but increasingly they also includetargets related to people-centricsustainability goals such as diversity,equal pay or the elimination of childlabour throughout their entire value chain.A focus on sustainability can increaseemployee engagement and help leadersto create better, more nimble andresilient teams. The CPOs we spoke torecommended incentivising teammembers by creating a sense of commonownership over sustainability goals.Create a ‘dashboard of tomorrow’ toassess the capabilities within your teamand evaluate who has the skills to adoptresponsible leadership practices. Identifyhigh-potential employees early on andcultivate their responsible leadership skillsets. Finally, do not forget about your‘older’ employees.
