Volvo Cars introduces refreshed
S90 and V90 models, plus mild-hybrid
powertrains across entire line-up
Volvo Cars reveals refreshed
versions of the S90 saloon and V90
estate, including a refined exterior
design and a brand-new, state-ofthe-art
sound system by Bowers &
Wilkins.
In a broader portfolio upgrade,
the company’s 48-volt mildhybrid
powertrain options are now
available on every Volvo model,
further boosting the company’s
electrified offer.
In terms of exterior design, Volvo
designers have introduced a number
of refinements on both the front and
rear of the S90 and V90, including
new foglights, a new spoiler design
and a new lower front bumper.
On the V90, the most striking
feature is a brand-new rear light
design, including full LEDpowered
signature lighting and a
sequential turn indicator. A range
of new exterior colours and wheel
options further improve options for
personalisation.
Inside, a comprehensively
upgraded Bowers & Wilkins audio
system introduces an even better
in-car sound experience, thanks to
new features such as an upgraded
amplifier, automatic vehicle noise
cancellation and a new setting that
mimics the sound of your favourite
jazz club.
Another new feature inside is an
Advanced Air Cleaner with a PM
2.5 particle sensor. First developed
for the Chinese market and now
rolled out globally, it allows drivers
to monitor interior air quality via
the centre screen. If desired, the
Advanced Air Cleaner can clean the
cabin air of almost all tiny particles
within a few minutes.
Both the new Bowers & Wilkins
audio system and the Advanced
Air Cleaner technology are now
available on all 90 and 60 series
models based on the Scalable
Product Architecture (SPA)
platform.
All models in the 90 and 60
series now also come with double
USB-C charging points in the rear,
replacing the 12-volt outlet. The
wireless charging functionality for
smartphones, first introduced on
the XC40 compact SUV, is now also
available on most variants in the 90
and 60 series.
In terms of interior materials, the
exclusive tailored wool blend seats
introduced on the XC90 last year
are now also available on all 90 and
60 models, while there is also a
leather-free interior option for the
top trim levels.
Elsewhere in its model range,
Volvo Cars is significantly
expanding the number of its 48-volt
mild-hybrid powertrain options,
making these engines available on
every single Volvo model.
Introduced on the XC90 and
XC60 SUVs last year, the mild
hybrids are now also available on all
other 90 and 60 series cars, as well
as on the XC40. The mild-hybrid
powertrain options on the V90
Cross Country represent the first
electrified variants in the history of
the Cross Country range.
Volvo Cars’ mild hybrids offer
drivers up to 15 per cent fuel
savings and emission reductions
in real-world driving. The brakeby-wire
system interacts with the
energy recovery system and reduces
fuel consumption and emissions by
recovering kinetic energy under
braking.
Together with the Recharge car
line of plug-in hybrids and fully
electric cars, this means there is
now an electrified Volvo model for
everyone.

Fiat Talento named Medium Van of the Year
at Great British Fleet Awards
The new Fiat Professional Talento
– the brand’s supremely versatile and
dependable workmate – has been
named Medium Van of the Year at
the prestigious Great British Fleet
Awards 2020.
The model took the title at a glitzy
ceremony in London after an expert
panel of Fleet World Group editors
put it through its paces alongside a
full field of competitors.
They chose New Talento as their
winner after being impressed by its
winning combination of cuttingedge
technology, design appeal,
lower emissions, improved driving
dynamics and reduced SMR costs.
Van Fleet World Editor, Dan
Gilkes, said: “Last year’s update to
the Fiat Professional Talento was
not simply a tweak of the engine
management or the addition of
improved exhaust aftertreatment,
but a wholesale change beneath the
bonnet.
“It now offers lower emissions,
reduced fuel consumption and a
cut in service and maintenance
costs. There’s also increased
equipment and a simplified line-up
for customers. A cosmetic facelift
completes what, under the skin, was
a major driveline overhaul.
“A familiar appearance hides a
major update, with an improved
driving experience and lower
emissions, along with the potential
for improved productivity.”
Receiving the award, Richard
Chamberlain, Director of Fiat
Professional UK, said: “We are
absolutely thrilled to see the new
Talento recognised by the fleet
industry for this hotly-contested
award.
“It’s really pleasing that a panel of
expert judges agree with our own
assessment that the new Talento
ticks all the boxes for anyone in the
market for a medium-sized van.”
Updated for 2020, the new
Fiat Professional Talento has
been updated with a range of new
features designed to make it even
more practical, productive and
user-friendly for tradespeople and
businesses everywhere.
This includes the introduction of
the new 2.0-litre EcoJet engine with
Start & Stop technology, enhanced
styling, and new infotainment
options, including DAB radio with
Bluetooth and a 7-inch Touch-Radio
Nav, which is Apple CarPlay ready
and Android AutoTM compatible.
Available with a full range of body
types (low roof and high roof van,
crew cab and platform cab), the
Talento MY20 comes in a choice of
two lengths, two heights and two
different wheelbases. By combining
these elements, the renewed model
can be tailored to meet all needs
for light transport, from 5.2 to 8.6
cubic meters and with a gross vehicle
weight from 2.80 to 3.05 tons and a
payload that can reach 1,258kg.
In addition to all this, by opening
the “CargoPlus” partition situated
under the passenger seats,
professionals can carry objects
measuring up to 3.75m in length
(4.15m for the long wheelbase trim
level). The extraordinary flexibility
is also guaranteed by the loading
height of just 552mm and the sliding
door width of 1,030mm. The load
volume of 5.2 cubic metres in the
short wheelbase trim, 6 cubic metres
in the long wheelbase trim and a
generous 8.6 cubic metres in the
long wheelbase and high roof trim
means that the Talento MY20, even
in the short wheelbase trim, can
carry three Euro pallets.

The new Caddy: more digital, connected,
efficient and charismatic than ever before
The switch to the MQB platform
is visible in the new Caddy’s more
dynamic- looking proportions.
The designers utilised the exciting
technical opportunity presented
by the MQB platform to create a
completely redesigned vehicle body
– one that is more charismatic than
ever. With the cw value reduced
from 0.33 to 0.30, the Caddy sets
a new benchmark for this type of
vehicle. In terms of engineering and
specification, the exterior of the
Caddy has a number of new features.
These include as options the electric
closing aids for the sliding doors and
tailgate, plus a panoramic sunroof
– with an especially large glass area
of 1.4 m2 above both the first and
second rows of seats. Also new: up
to 18-inch alloy wheels and – fitted
as standard in the top versions – new
LED headlights and LED rear lights.
The new Caddy will again launch
as the Cargo (panel van with enclosed
superstructure), an estate (with
passenger compartment windows)
and in various different passenger car
variants (MPVs). The nomenclature
of the passenger car lines has been
reconfigured: the base model will
in future be the ‘Caddy’; above that
follows the ‘Life’ specification and
finally the premium ‘Style’ line. In
fact, All of the models are even better
equipped than the corresponding
previous one.
Inside, the fifth generation of the
all-rounder impresses with new hightech
solutions and appreciably more
space. The long version – the Caddy
Maxi – now, for example, provides
room for up to two Euro pallets, which
can optionally be loaded sideways in
the middle and back or sideways in the
middle and lengthways in the back.
The indicator and control elements
have been completely redesigned: the
interactive interfaces to driver and
front- seat passenger are formed by
the new Digital Cockpit (optionally
fully digital instruments) and the
radio and infotainment systems
(between 6.5 and 10 inches in size).
The fusion of Digital Cockpit and top
10-inch navigation system creates a
new digital landscape
of indicators and
controls: the
‘Innovision
Cockpit’. Via an online connectivity
unit (OCU) with integrated eSIM
the infotainment systems are able
to access the mobile online services
and functions of ‘Volkswagen We’,
meaning the new Caddy is ‘always
connected’.
Another new feature in the Caddy:
digital buttons for light, sight, audio
and menu functions. The rotary
switch for light has served its time,
with the front array of buttons for
Light & Sight to the left of the steering
wheel now taking over its role. Various
items of the central control system’s
menu can be reached very quickly and
easily via the direct access buttons.
In addition, LED interior lights,
ergonomic seats and a power supply
for external 230V devices enhance
life on board. Another new feature is
a roof vent for better climate control
and faster stationary ventilation in the
back.
Six of the 19 driver assistance
systems on the Caddy are completely
new. They include Travel Assist,
which, for the first time in a
Volkswagen commercial vehicle,
facilitates assisted driving across
the full speed range. In connection
with Travel Assist, the Caddy’s
redesigned multifunction steering
wheel is also equipped with capacitive
sensors. These sensors ensure precise
detection of even a lightly touching
hand, thus avoiding any false alarms.
Now also in the new Caddy: Trailer
Assist, familiar from the Crafter,
for significantly easier reverse
manoeuvring and Side Assist inclusive
of Rear Traffic Alert. The existing
assistance systems in the Caddy have
been significantly expanded and
updated with new functions.

Hybrid technology arrives in
the Fiat City Car line-up
The Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda will
be the first FCA models to adopt the
group’s new hybrid technology. The
new 500 Mild Hybrid and Panda Mild
Hybrid will make hybrid technology
accessible to all, arriving in UK
showrooms from February and March
2020 respectively.
Both models provide all the benefits
of efficient, compact, lightweight and
accessible hybrid driving. For the last
120 years, Fiat has been a pioneer
in technology and an innovator
in mobility. Now, it looks to more
sustainable mobility.
2020 marks a new milestone in the
history of Fiat. The electrification of
the brand will begin with the launch
of the new mild hybrid versions of
the Fiat 500 and the Panda and will
continue with the start of production
of the new 500 in its spiritual home
of Turin. This model will be 100
per cent electric and will therefore
play a key role in the FCA e-Mobility
strategy.
The 500 and Panda will be available
with a new petrol mild hybrid engine
that combines the latest 3-cylinder
FireFly 1.0-litre engine family with
a 12-volt BSG electric motor and a
lithium battery that delivers 70hp
(51kW).
Compared to the outgoing
1.2-litre 69hp petrol engine, the
mild hybrid version improves fuel
efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions
on the road by up to 30 per cent
without impeding performance. It
also ensures a very high standard
of driving comfort thanks to the
BSG system, allowing for a quiet,
vibration-free restart of the internal
combustion engine in Stop&Start
mode.
The new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder
engine has a peak power output
of 70hp (51kW) at 6,000rpm and
peak torque of 92Nm at 3,500rpm.
The cylinder head has two valves
per cylinder and a single camshaft
with continuous variable valve
timing (the timing is chain-driven).
The structure includes a compact
combustion chamber, high-tumble
intake ducts and external Exhaust
Gas Recirculation (EGR), providing
a remarkably high compression ratio
(12:1), which translates into better
thermal efficiency. The crankcase,
developed in collaboration with
Teksid, is made of high-pressure diecast
aluminium alloy with cast-iron
cylinder liners, to reduce start-up
times and contain the weight of the
engine to just 77kg. Additionally,
friction is reduced using a crank
mechanism with a bore/stroke
ratio of 1.24 and a connecting rod/
crank device with a 10mm offset to
maximise efficiency.
The BSG system is mounted
directly on the engine and is
operated by the belt that also
drives the auxiliaries. The system
recovers energy during braking and
deceleration, stores it in a lithium
battery with a capacity of 11Ah,
and uses it, at a maximum power
of 3,600W, to restart the engine
in Stop&Start mode and to assist it
during acceleration.
This technology allows the internal
combustion engine to switch off by
shifting into neutral, even at speeds
below 18mph. The dashboard, which
displays information on the hybrid
system, prompts the driver when to
shift.
The mild hybrid propulsion unit
used in the Panda and 500 receives
a 6-gear manual transmission
(transverse gearbox, front-wheel
drive), aimed at improving fuel
economy in out-of-town driving,
thanks to new low-friction bearings
and gaskets and the use of a specific
high-efficiency lubricant. The new
system also involves lowering the
entire power unit 45mm so the car
behaves better on the road thanks to
the lower centre of gravity.

Toyota Proace and Proace City take double
honours in the first What Car? Van Awards
When it comes to all-round realworld
usability, Toyota has the
best small and medium vans on the
market, according to What Car?
which has today named Proace and
Proace City as “best for practicality”
class winners its first van awards.
It’s a comprehensive success for
the models, which cover the most
competitive segments in the market.
Going beyond a capacious load space
and high payload, both offer an
ingenious Smart Cargo system which
extends carrying capacity for longer
items through the bulkhead with a
folding passenger seat mechanism.
Smart Cargo is provided as standard
on all new Proace vans and is
available as an option or standard,
according to equipment grade, on
Proace City.
Commenting on the award for
Proace, Steve Huntingford, What
Car? Editor, said: “Our judges
selected the Proace because the
practical nature of a van extends
beyond the vehicle’s simple shell.”
Toyota Proace City
Toyota Proace
He added that practicality
“goes beyond the load space,”
drawing attention to the lay-out of
the “comfortable” cabin and the
availability of “clever tech” options
that can help reduce driver fatigue
and take some of the stress out of
driving.
Turning to Proace City,
Huntingford said: “This van can
carry almost 4m3, with payloads up
to 1,000kg… and it has the longest
load length of any vehicle in its class.
Further upticks follow because you
can have your vehicle in a variety
of sizes, with standard or long
wheelbase options.”
Stuart Ferma, General Manager
Toyota and Lexus Fleet Sales, said:
“Proace and Proace City are central
to the scope and appeal of our Toyota
Professional LCV range, so it is very
rewarding to see their designed-in
practicality being rewarded by What
Car? Together these models cover
a wide span of business customer
needs, answering not just the
requirements for carrying capability,
but for being safe, efficient,
comfortable and reliable, too.”

BMW 3 Series range expands to include
four plug-in hybrid models
driving dynamics.
The instant power delivery of the
electric motor is immediately obvious
and contributes to the cars’ highly
evolving drive. The lithium-ion highvoltage
batteries feature the latest cell
technology that promotes high energy
content and enables the new 3 Series
plug-in hybrid models to run on
electrical power for a maximum range
of between 34 to 36 miles (WLTP)
free of local emissions.
BMW is increasing customer choice
when it comes to plug-in hybrid drives
in the premium mid-range segment.
The electrified BMW 3 Series line
up will be expanded over the coming
months from the one model currently
available to a total of four.
Following the successful launch of
the new BMW 330e Saloon, the new
BMW 330e Touring will be available
from summer 2020. To complete the
four-model line-up, both models will
be offered from the summer with the
intelligent all-wheel drive system,
BMW xDrive, as well as rear-wheel
drive.
The latest-generation BMW
eDrive technology offers
considerable efficiencies. The
Saloon’s combined fuel consumption
ranges from 176-201mpg with
combined power consumption
at 15.0-14.8kWh/100km and
CO2 emissions of 37-32g/km.
The Touring returns a combined
fuel consumption from 176mpg,
combined power consumption from
15.7 kWh/100km and combined
CO2 emissions from 39g/km. All
figures are provisional.
The hybrid powertrain not only
increases efficiency and electrically
powered range for all 3 Series plugin
hybrid models, it also enhances
The latest battery cell
technology and high-voltage
storage
The plug-in hybrid models in
the new BMW 3 Series owe their
increased electric range to the latest
advances in battery cell technology.
Their lithium-ion batteries, designed
specifically for each model and
manufactured by the BMW Group,
have a gross energy content of 12.0
kWh and a capacity of 34 Ah.
The battery cells, produced
according to BMW Group
specifications, have an exceptionally
high storage capacity and extensive
energy supply. The electrical energy
stored in the high-voltage battery
is also used to supply the vehicle
electrical system. This means that a
generator powered by the combustion
engine is no longer necessary, thereby
further increasing the efficiency of the
system. A 40-litre fuel tank ensures
a combined range that is suitable for
long-distance travel, highlighting
the capabilities of the plug-in hybrid
models as touring vehicles.
Brake-energy recuperation
provides highly efficient battery
charging on the move. With a BMW
i Wallbox, these charging operations
16 Small Business Fleet Management
can be completed within 2.4 hours
up to 80 per cent of its total capacity
and 3.4 hours to achieve full capacity.
The high-voltage battery can also be
charged at conventional household
sockets, using the standard charging
cable.
Using this method, the completely
discharged battery can absorb 80 per
cent of its total capacity within 4.2
hours while 5.7 hours is the estimated
period required for a 100% recharge.
The plug-in hybrid system of
the new BMW 330e Touring also
comprises a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder
petrol engine with BMW TwinPower
Turbo Technology and an output of
184hp, along with an electric motor
integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic
transmission, which generates a peak
output of 113hp. The total system
output of 252hp can be increased
by an additional 40hp for up to 10
seconds to deliver a total of 292hp
under especially high loads - all
helping to maintain the 3 Series’
sporting heritage. This standard
XtraBoost is available in SPORT
mode, which can be activated by
the driving experience switch. The
maximum system torque of the plugin
hybrid drive in the new BMW 330e
Touring is 420Nm.
XtraBoost is also available during
kickdown manoeuvres and after
shifting the selector switch to the M/S
position. The sporting characteristics
of the new BMW 330e Touring are
further underlined by model-specific
drive-sound tuning, a direct yet
precise accelerator pedal curve and
a specific shift programme as part of
the 8-speed Steptronic transmission
that includes brake downshifts.
The new BMW 330e Touring
can accelerate from 0-62mph in
6.1 seconds (provisional figure)
and its maximum speed is 136mph
(provisional figure). In Hybrid mode
the new BMW 330e Touring can
reach up to 68mph when running on
electric power alone. The combustion
engine only switches on at higher
speeds or when there are high load
requirements.
When the Electric mode is
activated with the eDrive button,
the vehicle can reach speeds up to
87mph drawing on the power of its
eDrive alone. Thanks to state-of-theart
cell technology, the lithium-ion
high-voltage battery in the new BMW
330e Touring has an electrically
powered range of 34 miles
(provisional figure*).
BMW eDrive in combination
with BMW xDrive
Two all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid
versions of the BMW 3 Series will
also launch alongside the BMW 330e
Touring. Featuring the same plug-in
hybrid system as the corresponding
rear-wheel drive models, the new
BMW 330e xDrive Saloon returns
a combined fuel consumption
from 166mpg, combined power
consumption: from 16.7 kWh/100
km and combined CO2 emissions
from 38g/km (provisional figures)
and in the new BMW 330e xDrive
Touring combined fuel consumption
is from 156mpg, combined power
consumption from 17.8 kWh/100
km and combined CO2 emissions of
42g/km (provisional figures). Power
delivery from the electric motor
and engine is combined with power
transmission to all four wheels.
Via an electronically controlled
multi-disc clutch, the intelligent
all-wheel-drive system distributes
power from the engine and electric
motor between the front and rear
wheels as required. Combined with
DSC (Dynamic Stability Control),
Small Business Fleet Management 17
the system adapts the distribution
of drive torque within a fraction of a
second to ensure maximum traction
and driving stability in all road and
weather conditions. It also supports
the sporting handling of the Saloon
and Touring models with plug-in
hybrid drive.
The new BMW 330e xDrive Saloon
accelerates from standstill to 62mph
in 5.8 seconds, reaching a top speed
of 139mph (provisional figures). The
new BMW 330e xDrive Touring
completes the standard sprint in 6.2
seconds, achieving a maximum speed
of 133mph (provisional figures).
With an electric range of 36 miles
(provisional figure) for the Saloon and
34 miles (provisional figure) for the
Touring model, the all-wheel-drive
plug-in hybrid variants of the new
BMW 3 Series can utilise electric
power alone to handle most day-today
driving such as commuting or
travelling within urban environments
New plug-in hybrid Touring
models
This is the first time the advantages
of an electrified drive system will be
available in BMW Touring models.
Touring models with plug-in hybrid
drive offer the same level of interior
comfort and five-seat versatility as the
conventionally powered cars. Thanks
to the space-saving arrangement of
the high-voltage battery under the
rear seat, the 330e Touring’s luggage
compartment is only marginally
smaller than in the combustion
version; by folding down the rear
40:20 split backrest, storage space
can be extended to up to 1,420 litres.
High level of standard
equipment, includes auxiliary
air conditioning
All plug-in hybrid models in the
new BMW 3 Series are fitted as
standard with active pedestrian
protection. When running on
electric power at speeds of up to
19mph, an unmistakeable sound
designed specifically for electrified
BMW models is generated to alert
other road users to the approaching
car without impairing the acoustic
comfort of vehicle occupants.
The standard equipment of the
BMW 3 Series models with electric
drive also includes 3-zone automatic
air conditioning and auxiliary
air conditioning. At low outdoor
18 Small Business Fleet Management
temperatures, the interior can also be
conveniently heated prior to setting
off, even if the battery charge status
is low. The preconditioning function
also enables the interior to be cooled
at high outside temperatures. The
interior can be pre-conditioned
remotely via BMW Connected using a
smartphone.
The BMW 3 Series plug-in hybrid
models standard equipment also
includes an automatic anti-dazzle
interior mirror alongside anti-dazzle
folding exterior mirrors and Parking
Assistant which combines a rear
view camera with automated parking
functionality, including reversing
assistant. BMW Live Cockpit
ConnectedDrive, which includes full
voice control in the form of BMW’s
Intelligent Personal Assistant in
addition to the latest generation
BMW Operating System 7.0, includes
full navigation, Remote Services,
Apple CarPlay and Connected Music
as standard.
Virtually the entire range of
optional equipment features for
the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and
the new BMW 3 Series Touring
is available for the plug-in hybrid.
Within the popular M Sport Plus
package, this includes the Adaptive
M suspension featuring Variable
Sports Steering and the M sports
braking system, as well as innovative
driver assistance systems to optimise
comfort and safety, such as Driving
Assistant Professional.
Parking Assistant Plus also includes
the BMW Drive Recorder technology
which allows the front, rear and
side-facing cameras to act as event
recorders and save files of up to 40
seconds of footage directly to the
central information display. Films
can be saved either via a manual or
automatic activation and then be
easily downloaded directly to a USB
from within the vehicle. Another
optional equipment feature is a tow
hitch with electrically swivelling ball
head. From summer 2020 onwards,
the permissible towing capacity for
all plug-in hybrid models in the new
BMW 3 Series will be 1500kg.
Hybrid-specific digital
services from BMW
Connected
New BMW Connected digital
services will be available for the
market launch of the new 3 Series
plug-in hybrid models, to make
charging the high-voltage battery
en-route even more attractive and
convenient. When selecting a public
charging station, the navigation
system also provides the driver with
a list of recommended nearby hotels,
restaurants, cafés, tourist attractions
and cultural institutions. Chargingstation
availability can also be
checked using the vehicle display and
operating system. The driver receives
the information along with a forecast
of the occupancy status of the public
charging station at the time of arrival.
With active route guidance, the
anticipatory hybrid drive ensures that
the use of available electric energy is
efficiently spread over the distance
of your trip. The driver doesn’t
need to do anything as the function
analyses the route ahead and decides
automatically where to drive with the
combustion engine or solely electric,
offering the overall ability to enhance
driving in urban areas on pure
electric.
Comprehensive powertrain
versatility
With its strategic ‘Power of Choice’
approach, the BMW Group meets
the individual mobility needs of its
customers all over the world. A broad
spectrum of drive technologies,
including highly efficient petrol and
diesel engines, pure electric drive
and plug-in hybrid systems, results
in a diverse model offering that is
tailored to a wide range of individual
preferences and legislation.
This year, BMW will continue to
build on its long-standing success
in the area of electrically powered
vehicles.
By the end of last year, the
company had already sold half a
million vehicles with purely electric
or plug-in hybrid drive systems
worldwide and this year, BMW
Group will further expand its range
of electrified vehicles. By the end
of 2021, the BMW Group aims to
have more than one million vehicles
with electrified drive systems on the
road. A quarter of the vehicles sold
by the BMW Group in Europe will
be electrified by 2021: this share will
increase to a third by 2025 and to
half by 2030. The BMW Group plans
to expand its range to include 25
electrified models by 2023.

More powerful engine adds muscle to the
mighty Toyota Hilux
When it comes to a pick-up that’s
right for the job, looking the part
simply isn’t enough: you need muscle
to match the looks. The new Toyota
Hilux is strengthening its appeal
with a new, more powerful 2.8-litre
engine that maintains its reputation
as one of the most competitive and
capable models in its segment.
The new engine leads a series
of technical, dynamic, styling and
equipment upgrades for the worldfamous
“go-anywhere” Hilux.
It powers new top-of-the-range
Invincible X and (in addition to the
current 2.4 unit) Invincible Double
22 Small Business Fleet Management
Cab models and is available with
a choice of automatic or manual
transmission.
The DOHC 16-valve 2,755cc
turbodiesel unit generates
201bhp/150kW at 3,400rpm.
Maximum torque is 500Nm
with a six-speed automatic
transmission, available between
1,600 and 2,800rpm. With manual
transmission, the figure is 420Nm,
delivered between 1,400 and
3,400rpm.
There’s a significant improvement
in performance compared to Hilux’s
established 2.4-litre unit, with
0-62mph acceleration reduced by 2.1
seconds to 10.7 seconds (automatic
version). Despite the engine’s larger
capacity and higher output, there is
only a modest difference in fuel and
emissions efficiency: official WLTP
combined cycle data shows 28.5
– 30.0mpg and 246 – 259g/km
with automatic transmission; 31.3 –
33.2mpg and 224 – 236g/km with
manual transmission.
New Hilux maintains its one-tonne
payload capacity and the ability
to tow (braked) loads of up to 3.5
tonnes.
The key to this strong balance of
performance and efficiency is design
and engineering details throughout
the engine’s construction. These
include an optimised combustion
chamber shape, pistons and piston
rings, a DLC (diamond-like carbon)
coating on the piston rings and
slowing of the combustion gas flow to
reduce cooling losses.
There is also a two-stage oil
pump that can change the oil
pressure as required, reducing the
pump driving force when the engine
is cold or operating under light loads
and the friction caused by early
piston warm-up.
The exhaust gas recirculation
section of the intake manifold is
designed to suppress variation in the
gas and intake efficiency has been
improved by dispensing with the
swirl control valve. Further measures
have adjusted catalyst capacity and
performance to ensure compliance
with Euro 6d emissions regulations.
The engine is quieter, too, with
less vibration thanks to detailed
adjustment to the shape of the intake
manifold and the catalytic converter’s
insulator.
New Hilux continues to offer
the option of the successful
148bhp/110kW 2.4-litre
turbodiesel unit fitted with a fuel
and emissions-reducing stop-start
system (excepting the entry level
Active grade).
The new Toyota Hilux is available

The Unity Automotive story started back in
1985 at Cross Roads Garage near Stratford-
Upon-Avon.
Over the last 30 years Cross Roads has
become one of the most successful Subaru
and Isuzu dealers in the UK, winning virtually
every manufacturers award possible.
In 2010 having won a total of 25 awards,
including the Prestigious AM and Motor
Trader Award, it was decided that the time
was right to expand under the new name -
Unity Automotive.
In the summer of 2012, Carstins of Balsall

and more recently we have added Heritage
of Leicester and our newest location based
in Oxford.
Unity Automotive is now able to offer a
wide range of vehicles across our 8 brands
but still retains those important values
that our first dealership was built on. We
genuinely look forward welcoming you to

All-new Ford Puma crowned What Car?
Car of the Year 2020
The all-new Ford Puma is car of
the year according to renowned
motoring magazine and website
What Car?.
Unveiled last year and now on sale,
the new Ford Puma combines mildhybrid
fuel efficiency, best-in-class
luggage space and advanced driver
assistance technologies in a stylish
crossover.
Steve Huntingford, What Car?
editor, said: “As a small SUV, the
Ford Puma competes in one of the
fastest-growing sectors of the car
market. And crucially, it excels in
all the areas that are important to
buyers, according to our research.
Thanks to its sharp handling, gutsy
engine and clever mild hybrid
technology, the Puma offers a mix
and fun and frugality not previously
seen. Plus, it’s very well priced
and equipped, and as practical
as it is stylish. In short, it’s truly
outstanding.”
The consumer magazine and
website, attracting over 1.95
million monthly users, chose the
well-equipped Puma ST-Line X
Mild Hybrid 1.0 EcoBoost 155PS,
priced at £23,645, as their best
recommended model.
On receiving the award, Roelant
de Waard, vice president, Ford
of Europe Marketing, Sales and
Service, said: “It’s a great honour for
the Ford Puma to be named as What
Car?’s Car of the Year 2020. We’re
all excited to see the return of the
Puma name on a stylish and dynamic
crossover that reflects today’s
customer aspirations. Puma blends
practicality with performance and
fuel-efficiency with its choice of a
1.0-litre, 125PS or 155PS hybrid
options.
“To receive such high praise from
industry experts like What Car?
kicks off the year to a great start.
This is Ford’s sixth What Car? Car
of the Year win, and we are thankful
for the continued support.”
What Car? also named the Ford
Galaxy as best MPV in its price.

Mercedes-Benz Vans adds new Mercedes
Pro Connect services to Sprinter, Vito and
eVito models
Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd
has enhanced the capabilities of its
class-leading connectivity system,
Mercedes PRO connect, with the
addition of two new services –
Remote Access and Digital Drivers’
Log.
Remote Vehicle Access means
that a driver assigned to a vehicle
can lock and unlock the vehicle
and operate the optional auxiliary
heater (if fitted) from anywhere in
the world. This allows packages
to be dropped off to the load
compartment, for example, even if
the driver is not with the vehicle. In
addition, the driver is able to set the
vehicles’ optional auxiliary heater.
If the keys are locked in the vehicle,
they can also now be retrieved more
easily. It also offers improved antitheft
protection, as unlocked vehicle
doors are noticed, flagged on the
system, and can be remotely locked
again.
Digital Driver’s Log enables
journey logs to be generated into
an exportable PDF file that can be
kept for company records, or can
be used to assist vehicle managers
or administrators in calculating
personal versus business mileage
and a complete record of all
journeys. This enables more efficient
working procedures, as tedious and
error-prone manual entries in a
journey log are no longer necessary.
Since the introduction of
Mercedes PRO connect with the
latest generation of the Sprinter
in June 2018, Mercedes-Benz
Vans has connected 9,500 new
Sprinter vehicles in the UK, giving
customers greater security, safety
and efficiency benefits.
Mercedes PRO connect constantly
updates itself, giving customers new
features and benefits up to every six
months. In 2019, Mercedes-Benz
Vans added Drive Style monitoring
and electric mobility services to
Mercedes PRO connect. Further
new features to the system in the
past six months also included realtime
variable servicing monitoring,
parking time monitor and additional
geo-fence options.
Steve Bridge, Managing Director,
Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd,
said: “We are committed to
enhancing the value our connected
vehicle services that we offer to
our customers to help keep their
businesses moving. We don’t want
to introduce gimmicks; we truly
believe that these digital services
will add genuine value to the van
community and provide small ways
to give them one less thing to think
about. As is always the case too, we
welcome feedback from van drivers
and operators about their use of
Mercedes PRO connect and any
ideas of what they would like to see
developed, so that we can continue
to provide the most innovative
solution for this hard working
community.”
Mercedes-Benz Vans is offering
these new digital services for all
vehicles activated after 13.01.2020.
All Mercedes PRO connect services
including the newly released
‘Remote Access’ and ‘Digital
Drivers Log’ are now included free
of charge, for three years. Mercedes-
Benz Vans is also working on an
update to remotely retrofit the
software to previously connected
vehicles, to allow all eligible
customers to benefit from these
exciting updates, which should be
available by the end of Q1 2020.

“The first truly great car of the decade” –
New Toyota GR Yaris triumphs again as
Autocar's Best Hot Hatch of 2020
Another week and another top
honour for the new Toyota GR Yaris,
which has seen off all competition to
take top spot in Autocar magazine’s
annual test to find Britain’s Best
Affordable Driver’s Car.
Not only did the new pure rally-bred
machine see off all its market rivals,
it went on to outperform the latest
exotic supercars from Lamborghini,
Porsche and Aston Martin to claim
third place in the overall Best Driver’s
Car rankings, just five points off
taking top spot.
Given the results, it’s not surprising
that Autocar declares GR Yaris to be
“the first truly great car of the decade.”
The achievement follows up the Hot
Hatch of the Year title the Toyota
earned from Car magazine just
last week.
In the affordable driver’s car test
programme, the GR Yaris Circuit
Pack was ranked first by five out of
the six road test team judges, with
the sixth placing it second to seal an
emphatic win.
In appraising the car’s special
qualities, Autocar explains how
the car revealed “hidden depths
of driver appeal, the likes of which
haven’t been seen in a hot hatchback
in a generation.” Among the judges,
Andrew Frankel declares the GR Yaris
to be “the most dynamically capable
car ever offered for sale at this kind
of money.”
The achievement is a reward for the
development team behind GR Yaris,
including Toyota Gazoo Racing, its
World Rally Championship partner
Tommi Mäkinen Racing and a test
team line-up of top WRC drivers.
Their efforts have delivered a rally
homologation special for the road
that’s available from just less than
£30,000 and with competitive
purchase offers for customers keen
to secure one of the hottest new
prospects on the market.
GR Yaris uses the world’s most
powerful three-cylinder engine,
turbocharged to produce 257bhp –
power enough to move the car from
rest to 62mph in 5.5 seconds. It’s
built on a dedicated chassis and uses
Toyota’s new purpose-designed GR-
Four all wheel drive system, adjustable
for different front/rear drive balance to
suit the conditions, from road to track
to special stage. The Circuit Pack
version, as tested by Autocar, includes
GR-tuned suspension, front and rear
Torsen limited-slip differentials,
lightweight forged BBS alloys and
Michelin Pilot 4S performance tyres.

Toyota Corolla gains new
features and specifications
for 2021
Toyota’s British-built, all-hybrid
range of Corolla Hybrid Hatchback
and Touring Sports models is primed
for 2021 with a series of equipment
and style upgrades.
For the Icon grade – entry
point to the Corolla line-up – the
specification now includes a new
seven-inch colour multi-information
display in the driver’s instrument
binnacle, while both Icon and Icon
Tech versions are fitted with new
LED front fog lights. These features
are now standard across the full
Corolla range.
Design models present a new-look
cabin with a new black cloth seat
upholstery and a textured chrome
trim line running through the
dashboard and door panels. There’s
a new material for the door panel
inserts and centre console trim, plus
cool blue ambient lighting in the
doors, front cup holders and centre
console tray.
The Design grade comes with
new-design 10-spoke 17-inch alloy
wheels.
There are four new colour
choices for the optional bi-tone
finish for the GR Sport and Excel
Hatchback models: Denim Blue,
Manhattan Grey, Obsidian Blue and
Pure White, each combine with a
black roof, pillars and door mirror
housings. Obsidian Blue also joins
the list of Corolla monotone paint
finishes.
All Corolla Hatchback, Touring
Sports and Saloon models gain an
EV drive indicator in the driver’s
instrument binnacle, showing
when the car is running on electric
power alone, with zero emissions
and fuel consumption. The MyT
connected car app and multimedia
has additional functions, including
stolen vehicle tracking, remote
status check which confirms if the
lights are off, the windows closed
and the doors locked, and eCare
remote “health check” which alerts
the owner to any malfunction
warnings that require attention.

Hat trick for the Alfa Romeo Giulia
Quadrifoglio at What Car? Car of the Year
Awards 2020
The Alfa Romeo Giulia
Quadrifoglio has taken home the
accolades of Performance Car of
the Year for the third year in a row
at the annual What Car? Car of the
Year Awards 2020. The four-leafclover
has once again proved to be a
lucky charm, as the Giulia fought off
tough competition across all price
points to top the category.
Judged by the expert team at
What Car?, the Alfa Romeo Giulia
Quadrifoglio won them over with its
combination of class-leading driving
dynamics, characterful engine and
its unexpected versatility which
makes it ideal as a daily driver.
Steve Huntingford, What Car?
Editor praised the Alfa Romeo
Giulia Quadrifoglio saying: “For the
third year in a row, the Alfa Romeo
Giulia Quadrifoglio is What Car?'s
performance car of the year, and
for very good reason. A big part of
its appeal is a twin-turbocharged
2.9-litre V6 that has more than a
dash of Ferrari DNA. However,
despite it directing 503bhp to the
rear wheels alone, this isn’t some
scary monster of a car. Traction is
fantastic, whatever the weather. And
while the Giulia can be persuaded
to wag its tail when you put it in
race mode, this is something to
be enjoyed rather than wary of,
given the speed and precision of
the steering. As a bonus, when the
standard adaptive suspension is in
its most compliant setting, the ride
is supple enough for long journeys
to pass by comfortably, making the
Giulia a performance car you can
use every day.”
The Alfa Romeo Giulia
Quadrifoglio is powered by a 510hp,
600Nm Bi-Turbo V6 petrol engine,
which allows it to reach a top speed
of 176mph, while reaching 62mph
from zero in just 3.9 seconds.
Arnaud Leclerc, managing
director FCA UK, commented:
“Picking up this award for the third
year in a row is real testament to
work that went into creating the
Giulia Quadrifoglio, as it continues
to stand the test of time as a true
performance car.”.

Sprinter retains Large Van of the Year
honour at Great British Fleet Awards
The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has
retained the Large Van of the Year
honour at the Great British Fleet
Awards, held 30 January 2020 in
London.
Dan Gilkes, Van Fleet World
Editor and one of the judges for the
Great British Fleet Awards, said:
“While several players in the heavy
van market have raised their game in
the last 12 months, none has taken
the sector further forward than
Mercedes’ Sprinter. Front-wheel
drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel
drive, manual, automatic, high
powered or fleet stalwart, Sprinter
continues to offer a model to suit
every application.
“Even in its largest form, the
big Mercedes is easy to drive, as
a local delivery vehicle or a longdistance
hauler. It also continues
to return commendably frugal fuel
figures, helping to keep total cost of
ownership low.
"As mentioned last year, the biggest
step that Mercedes has taken with
Sprinter is in the cab, where the
MBUX interface leads the way in
easy to operate driver assistance
technology. Factor in a growing
number of Mercedes PRO telematic
and fleet management solutions and
the Sprinter easily retains our Best
Large Van award.”
Steve Bridge, Managing
Director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK,
commented: “When we say that we
keep businesses moving, we mean
it; to retain Large Van of the Year
thanks to Mercedes PRO connect
really does highlight that we have the
right products and services to support
fleet owners and drivers and ensure
that we do exactly that; help keep
their business moving.”
Since its launch in 1995, the
Sprinter has defined and re-defined a
whole segment numerous times. It has
notched a succession of technological
‘firsts’ including the ESP stability
system, Crosswind Assist, the Euro
VI emissions standard, COLLISION
PREVENTION ASSIST, Blind Spot
Assist and Lane Keeping Assist,
and collected more than 85 industry
awards.
