The UK is the world’s eighth largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity and third in Europe<br />
behind Germany and France. GDP currently stands at $2.3tr. The economy was devastated by the two World<br />
�����������������������������������������������������������������<br />
during the 1980’s under Prime Minister Thatcher who broke the unions and ushered in free market reforms<br />
that helped the UK to become a dominant presence in Europe. The second period came about in conjunction<br />
with the rise of New Labour, starting in 1997 with Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown, where market<br />
liberalisation was extended.<br />
GDP grew consistently for 15 years including 2.7% growth in 2006 and 3.1% growth in 2007. However the<br />
economy came to a standstill between April and May of 2008. This was compounded by the services sector,<br />
the backbone of the economy, growing just 0.2%. 2009 saw a 4.9% decline in the economy, while 2010<br />
marked a return to positive growth at 1.3%. Unemployment was at 7.8% in 2010 and under a moderate<br />
scenario, unemployment may reach 3.2 million in 2011.<br />
There are also fears that the economy faces a double dip recession, and if so national debt could rise to<br />
£2.3tr – compared to the government’s prediction of £1.5tr by 2013/14. To combat the effects of the global<br />
downturn, the Brown government introduced a number of measures, including tax cuts, nationalising parts<br />
of the banking system and suspending public sector borrowing. The Coalition government in 2010 initiated<br />

the Middle East as many wealthy Arabs extended their stay in the UK instead of holidaying in their usual<br />
Historically wealth resided with the landed aristocracy in the UK. More recently wealth has become<br />
destinations, closer to home.<br />

with assets of over £1m are more likely to attribute their wealth to the sale of a business. Wealthy foreigners<br />
living in the UK for at least 7 years will pay an additional tax of £30,000 a year should they wish to maintain<br />
their special tax privileges as non-domiciles. This could potentially lead to an exodus of foreign wealth.<br />
Additionally, in 2010 tax rates increased to 50% of incomes over £150,000. There has been considerable<br />
change in the demographics of wealthy individuals in the last decade with a large increase in the number of<br />

women, entrepreneurs, young wealth and foreign wealth – for example London now boasts more foreign-<br />
born billionaires than any other city. Traditionally women have become wealthy through inheritance or<br />

income earners are women. London has arguably emerged as the centre for international wealth. This is<br />
down to historically benign tax regulations, good schooling, a strong property market and its reputation as<br />

by tourism spend. More recently the wealthy have been seen to take a more considered approach to luxury,<br />
valuing fewer but better quality items. The cost of a luxury lifestyle in London went up considerably in 2011,<br />

healthy tourism sector. The UK can claim both modern and heritage luxury goods manufacturers as their<br />
own - Burberry, Dunhill, Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen are all British, as are retailers Harrods,<br />
Harvey Nichols & Selfridges.<br />
Iconic hotels The Ritz, The Savoy, The Dorchester and Claridge’s, cement London’s importance in luxury<br />
hospitality. As do more modern models like Quintessentially’s concierge services or private members<br />
clubs like Soho House. The UK was once a key manufacturer of luxury automobiles, famous for brands<br />
such as Jaguar, Rover, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Aston Martin. But with the majority now owned by foreign<br />
conglomerates, few brands now manufacture in the UK and the strength of the industry has become diluted.<br />
