First through the door was Torquay
United’s commanding defender Kyle
Cameron, fresh from a frustrating
play-off final in which he had two
legitimate-looking goals ruled out
as Hartlepool went on to secure
promotion to the EFL.
Cameron was born and raised in
Northumberland and played alongside
fellow Geordie Cal Roberts in the
youth ranks at Newcastle United.
He had to get over the disappointment
of being released by his boyhood club
in 2018 and made the brave move
down to Torquay, who had just been
relegated to the National League South,
in a bid to kick-start his senior career.
Cameron hit the ground running
at Plainmoor, quickly earning an
extension to his contract as Gulls boss
Gary Johnson hailed him ‘one of the
best centre-halves I’ve worked with’.
And he barely missed a kick as Torquay
secured an immediate return to the
National League and established
themselves back in the top tier, often
filling in as skipper in the absence of
Asa Hall.

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Frank
Vincent soon followed Cameron,
signing for us in early July.
And Ian Burchnall believes Vincent,
who has had loan spells in the EFL with
Scunthorpe and Walsall as well as a
promotion-winning stint with Torquay
alongside Cameron, will prove an
excellent addition to our midfield.
“Frank can play either as a holding
midfielder or as a number eight,” he
said. “He covers ground well, he’s leftfooted
and a good passer of the ball.
“He suits the way we want to play and
has been given a good education in
that style at Bournemouth.”
Vincent has spent the early part of
pre-season rehabilitating from injury
but is making positive progress.

Taylor
We paid an undisclosed fee
to secure the services of
Chesterfield wing-back Joel
Taylor.
The 25-year-old Stoke City
academy graduate, who joined
the Spireites from Chester
last summer, is described by
Burchnall as a player who can
‘offer a threat one-against-one.’
The head coach added: “Joel’s
pace in the wide areas and
his ability to attack in those
moments is really important.
“We have to look at the whole
package, including his age and
potential. He’s got the capacity
to develop his game further
and we feel we can help him do
that in this environment.”
