Fastforwardtwentysixyearsandaftermany944’s,

whenIboughtmyfirst911.A19803.0SC non-sport,finishedinsilverwithblackandblue‘chess-board’pasha
halfleathertrim.Ironicalyitwasalsopovertyspec,but
thepurityofthissingle-mirrormodeladdedtoits
charm.Itwasevenbereftofrearseatbeltsandsidere-
peaterindicators(theywouldn’tbecomestandarduntil
the1981modelyear).Furtheritwascompletelyoriginal
andunmolested.Neverfittedwithanalarm,never
adornedwithaprivateplateandcompletewithitsoriginalPanasonicstereoradiocassette.Nowireshanging
underthedasheither.
Orderednew from GlenHendersonPorscheinGlasgow
byalocalbutcher,hewouldcover55,000milesinKSJ
740W inthesixyearsofhisownership.Thecarwas
thensoldbyEdinburghdealerKennyDunntoanengineerbythenameofAndrew
from Torphichen,WestLothian,in1987.
IbecameKSJ’scustodianinNovember2007havingrespondedtoanadinPorschePost,thePorscheClubOf
GreatBritain’sexcelentmagazine.Adealfor£6,600
wasagreedandIwassettocolectthecarafew days
later.
Andrew hadownedthecarfortwentyyearsandcoveredamere20,000milesinhisownership,maintaining
ithimself.Maintenanceofnoteincludedtheheart
transplantoftheoriginal180bhpengineforaslightly
later204bhpunit,renderingthecaranon-matching
numbersexample.Suchimportancewasn’tplacedon
originalityinthosedays.
Havingdreamtoftheday,andImeandreamt,both
duringsleepanddaydreaming,Ipicturedinmymind
thatitwouldbeabeautifulsunnyspringorsummer’s
day.Theelectricsunroofwouldbe open,thefrontwindowsdowninordertohearthatgloriousflatsixreach
6,500rpm againandagainasIfeltthe‘G-force’push
mebackinmyseatasIhadasachild,RayBan’son,
andeverythingwouldberightintheworld.
Therealitywassomewhatdifferent.Andrew hadcollectedmefrom

WearrivedatAndrew’shousewheremy911wassatina
hugedoublegarage,theplacewhereithadcaled
homefortwentyyears.Andrew ranthroughsomeof
themoreimportantquirksofthecar(alofwhichI
knew,suchwasmyfanaticalresearchonthemodel
overtheyears).KindlyhealsoincludedseveralvolumesoforiginalPorscheworkshopmanualswhichhe
hadboughtfrom thefactoryuponpurchasebackin‘87.
Itwasawildwintersnight,afarfarawaydayfrom my
anticipatedblissfulsunnyday.It’sfairtosaythatI’m
evertheoptimist,evenwiththeweather,especialy
comingfrom Scotland.
Therainandthesleetblew sidewaysanditwasbitterly
cold.Tomydistainthewindow wipershadoutlived
theirusefulnessseveralyearsprior,theheadlamps
wereonecandlepoweratbestandtheinteriorwindowscloudedup.Dangerouslyso.
ButIwashappy.Blissfulyhappy.Thedayhadfinaly
arrivedwhenIownedmyown911.Andyoucouldn’tget
thesmileoffmyface.Irememberedasakidbabysitting
formycousinsandcleaningmyUncles911(s),usualy
onaSaturdaynight.AfterthewhiteSC hewentonto
buy(new)NSX210Y,asilverSC Targa,whichwaslater
boughtbyHowardWalker,thenEditorofMotormaga-
zineinthe80’s.LateralyheboughtB900HSC,a3.2
CarreraCoupe(alsofeaturedinthisbook-now owned
bymygoodfriendMartinJohn).Bothwerepurchased
from GlenHendersoninEdinburgh.TheTargafrom
GeorgeStreetandtheCoupefrom theirthennew
showroom inColintonRoad.
IkeptKSJ740W foraboutthreeyearsbeforeanew
businessventurenecessitatedthesale.
DuringmytimeIhadthecookiecuttersrefurbished,
thebodyworkresprayed,new bumperbelows,new
frontliprubber,new headlampsandfournew Pireli
P6000’sfittedplusthecarwasservicedrigorously
everythreemonths.
I’ladmitthatKSJ740W istheonethatgotaway.AndI
don’tmeanthatinafinancialregardconsideringthe
pricesaircooled911scommandnow,(althoughIdo
smartabitwhenIseethecurrentprices).Thiscarhas
leftaholeinmyheartwhichhasneverbeenfiled.As
