GETTING TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA

WHERE: Roxborough, PA

This first project investigated the basic techniques

of photography and camera operation. The class

explored the camera’s functions and controls. This

series of photos explored exposure, focus, proper

settings and depth of field of places around the

Roxborough neighborhood.

THE WORLD AROUND YOU

WHERE: Roxborough, PA and Reading, PA

With the intention to explore the surroundings,

Rachel chose to photograph her room in

Philadelphia, and also her family, pets, and

her favorite places in Reading. Doing this, she

captured a sense of place through photographs.

LANDSCAPES

WHERE: Wissahickon Park, PA

For this assignment, Rachel had to choose a place

of interest for landscape pictures. She always goes

hiking on the Wissahickon Trail, but never brought

her DSLR along before. Taking some things closeup

and far away, she focused on shapes and the

built environment that’s in the nature along the

trail.

PEOPLE & PORTRAITS

WHERE: Reading, PA

Portraiture challenges the photographer both

aesthetically and technically. In this project,

Rachel photographed her grandmother and sister.

For her sister, she explored different angles,

poses, and lighting to capture unique pictures

that are distinctive from a snapshot of a person.

LOW LIGHT & NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY

WHERE: Roxborough, PA

Night time photography was something that

Rachel always struggled with, the pictures that

she wanted never turned out how she envisioned

them. With proper settings, she was able to

capture low light and night time photos using

manual mode, a higher ISO setting, and choosing

a slow shutter speed.

ABSTRACTION

WHERE: Roxborough, PA

A photograph can be both a literal transcription

of subjects well as a nonrepresentational

abstraction. In this project, Rachel explored

both with a detailed eye on commonly found

objects in the Roxborough neighborhood.

FINAL PROJECT

WHERE: Roxborough, PA

The final project for the Digital Photography

class was open-ended, so Rachel idea was to

photograph the different kinds of birds that visit

her window bird feeder at different times of the

day. To do this, she set her camera on the TV

setting mode to capture fast movement. She also

used a tripod that was set up inside the window

and two lenses, a 18-55 mm lens and a 75-300 mm

lens.

Rachel decided to photograph the birds because

earlier in 2021 she bought a suction cupped bird

feeder that she put on the outside of her secondstory

window. Since then she’s been watching the

birds eat whenever they came by. They brought

her so much joy throughout the day while she sat

at her desk doing online classes.

She had been wanting to photograph them but

put it off because the tiny birds get scared easily

when they see any movement inside. As a result

of this, she has learned that patience is key with

bird photography.
