FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS - SAMUEL SAKYIAMAH DAMPARE 2
Biography
SAMUEL SAKYIAMAH DAMPARE
Mr. Samuel Sakyiamah Dampare was born at
Kwamakwa, near Asabi in the Eastern Region of
Ghana on the 31st of May 1933, to Opanyin Kofi Sakyi
and Madam Sarah Ama Mirekua who have both
passed.
Young S.S. Dampare started his primary education at
Asabi. At age six, his father decided to take him to
Anyinam to continue his education, while he
arranged for him to stay with his cousin, Mr Alexander
Hezekiah Sakyiamah. After one year in Anyinam, Mr.
A.H Sakyiamah was transferred to Nsawam to
continue his duty tour with Société Commerciale de
l'Ouest Africain (SCOA). S.S. went with him, and
continued his education, briefly at Nsawam St. Pauls
School, and then he transferred to the Presbyterian
School to continue in Class 2 in 1940. He therefore
did his full education in Nsawam Presbyterian Junior
and Senior Schools from 1940 to 1948, where he
successfully completed Standard 7 and obtained his
Middle School Leaving Certificate.
Having completed Middle School, he decided to
seek for employment while considering his lifelong
career options. He chose to work with the Ghana
Postal Agency at the time, and so sat for the
competitive examination for the job. He passed, and
got selected and appointed at Akuse, and was
posted to Senchi Ferry as a Postal Agent Assistant.
He became an assistant to Mr Adjei from Anum, who
was then old and due for pension, and so it appeared
S.S. was sent there ostensibly to understudy him and
takeover after his retirement. But he found out later
that the salary was not attractive so he left the Post
Office for better employment opportunities and
found one in the Ministry of Agriculture in 1952.
Mr. Dampare worked with the Ministry of Agriculture
from 1952 to 1955 and was once again selected for
another competitive examination and awarded a
scholarship to further his education at Kwadaso
Agricultural Training Centre. While there, he obtained
a second scholarship to study Agriculture at the
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology
(KNUST). These scholarships at Kwadaso
Agricultural Training Centre and KNUST lasted for
3 years, and on completion of both courses, he
was appointed an Agricultural Assistant and
posted to Asamankese to train Field Assistants
who had qualified to become Field Assistants
Grades One and Two. S.S also briefly took over
the spraying of capsids which had become a
serious menace to farmers in his jurisdiction.
and animal husbandry.
He held a number of managerial positions in the
Greater Accra Region of Ghana until he retired.
Mr S.S Dampare married Gladys Ama Serwaa
from Oyoko while serving as the Regional
Agricultural Officer for the Young Farmers
League in Ashanti Region.
He had eleven children, but lost one in 1966,
and so is survived by ten sons and daughters,
thirty-two grandchildren and seven great
grandchildren.
After this assignment, Mr. Dampare was
transferred to Bunso Agricultural Training School
as an Instructor. In his time with the Ministry of
Agriculture, he had the opportunity to do further
studies in Agriculture in Egypt in 1969, and also at
the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture
(IITA) in Ibadan, Nigeria.
On return he worked for the Ministry of Agriculture
helping farmers to increase productivity in crops

we love you still, in our

Rest In Peace Paapa
And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write,
Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from
henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from
their labours; and their works do follow them
- Revelation 14:13 -
From all your ten children in different parts of the world
our tribute begins with the precious words “Paapa, Thank
you”.
Thank you for being the instrument that God used to give
us our lives and existence. Today we honour your passing
by recalling the wonderful memories that you created with
us in your lifetime.
From our early years, what we remember is the love that
you gave us unconditionally. You loved your children and
you showed a keen interest in our growth and
development. As a firm believer in education, you always
encouraged us to go to school regularly and never miss a
day away from school. We remember those times when
our school report cards would arrive and you would
question why we were not the top person in our class. You
taught us to aim high and always strive to be the best.
As a committed Presbyterian Christian, you encouraged
us to attend church regularly and took us to church from
an early age. You taught us the importance of prayer and
reading the Bible and prayed with us whenever you had
the opportunity.
Your favourite Bible verses were Psalm 6, Psalm 35 and
Psalm 91. We learnt about spiritual warfare at an early age
and you gave us the tools we needed to fight for our
physical and spiritual survival on this earth.
We recall the times when your voice reverberated around
the house while you sang hymns to the Lord. You did your
best to set an example of faith for your children to follow.
You had a great sense of humour and we will miss your
dramatic stories that made us laugh so very often. You
were a gifted agriculturalist so we had the opportunity to
learn about poultry farming and food cultivation when we

made some farming trips with you to many villages. When
you returned from your treks in the rural areas you always
brought home gifts from friends, farmers and chiefs who
appreciated the great achievements you helped them
make to their farming and animal husbandry.
Things were not always easy at home as with many
families in this world but your wisdom, support and
encouragement always kept us going. When times were
very hard or when there was conflict, you taught us the
power of apologising and the need to forgive and forget
the past. In fact, your last words to us included asking for
forgiveness from your children. This humility you
demonstrated to God will remain in our hearts forever and
has taught us that it is important for the healing process of
children when parents ask for forgiveness. This is rare in
this world and we humbly salute you for that.
Because of your kindness and generosity, we developed
an extended family from your many friends who treated us
in many cases as their own children. You dedicated
yourself to your work and made sure your family was
always well-provided for. You did your very best with every
day that God gave you on this earth. We are confident that
your faith in God has opened a door in heaven where you
will spend eternity.
In the words of Pam brown “Dads are most ordinary men
turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story-tellers, and
singers of song.”
We will always miss you Paapa.
May you rest forever in the peace of God.

“Those we love don’t go away they
walk beside us every day unseen,
unheard, but always near, still loved,
still missed and very dear”
-Alex Maclean-
And so, it is, or was, for Mr Samuel
Sakyiamah Dampare, Paapa, as we all
came to know and call him, just as our
wives and husbands did. A man of many
parts, we would like to refer to him, well
and truly so.
A most welcoming Gentleman:- That is
the first impression you get of Mr
Dampare, in our days of foray into his
household, when we each were pursuing
our agenda of winning a daughter or son.
Unlike other fathers who will not take
kindly to you stepping into his home with
amorous intentions, he on the contrary
was welcoming and engaging.
He would acknowledge greetings from
you alright, and grant you space, only to
go and quiz his wife on which of the
children the lady or gentleman was
looking for. He then would do his
background checks and sized you up in
equal measure in his own time, and once
he had his information, he will engage you
in a long chat when he next meets you.
He was a remarkable person, had such a
beautiful soul and down to earth
personality. Seldom was he angry.
He was a simple person but not a
simpleton, who loved and appreciated
everyone. For those of us who got to
sojourn in his home at various times in our
lives, there never was a distinction
between his children and his in-laws. He treated
one and all on equal terms.
The conversationalist:- Ooh yes, that’s him! You
had to mentally prepare for a long and invigorating
conversation anytime you visited his home. Each
one of us have had our marathon sessions which
he likes to premise on the Gold Coast days.
He starts by saying “Kan nu”, to wit in the days of
yore- and then it is followed by a history session on
the prowess of the Convention Peoples Party
(CPP)- and the good old pre-independence days.
Paapa engages and picks your mind, relating all of
this to what is happening in the contemporary
times, drawing parallels and generally providing
lessons learnt.
And did we say he was, and remained a staunch
member of the CPP? - Yes, he did! He always
referred to riding his motor bike from Nsawam to
the Old Polo Grounds on Independence Day to
observe his favourite Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declare
Ghana’s independence.
Then there were his personal life stories also, of
not wearing shoes to school in Nsawam, and the
first time he wore a pair of shoes was his
Confirmation Day! The types of Presbyterian
discipline regimes he endured under his stewards,
his stunts at the Post Office when Mail Order was
very much in vogue, and Royal Mail used to deliver
packages promptly to Nsawam via train. He
relished all of these times and said them with glee.
The Consummate Professiona:l- he narrated
many a story which could fill several manuscripts.
From his school days in Kwadaso to KNUST,
spanning Bunso, Cairo, Ibadan, Oyarifa, Sege and
Tema. That was where the discipline instilled in him
was brought to bear, and he insisted on being early
at work, working diligently without having to look
over your shoulder, training and coaching his

students as well as colleagues, and delegating in time to
ensure succession. These were such admirable traits he kept
espousing that we ended up adopting them sub-consciously.
Paapa remained a well-groomed gentleman, very sharp and
knowledgeable always, and enjoyed good humour. For all the
good food he provided us, he never ate much, but did take
time to enjoy whatever he was taking at a given time. He
made friends easily, and retained them far and wide, always
striving to stay in touch till the end.
And in his twilight years, anytime you wanted to take leave of
him after a visit, you only had to start saying “Paapa, y3 b3 y3
na y3n a sr3 kwan” and midway, he will retort “Oy3” without
one ever completing the parting statement. It became his
stock in trade and so we also repeated the statement to keep
hearing him say “Oy3”.
As we said early on, he was a man of many parts, and
impacted everyone in a unique way with lasting memories.
Towards the end, he went through the pain of sickness and ill
health with remarkable and majestic equanimity. Today, his
journey on earth is done, and we say adieu Paapa, as we
celebrate your well lived life, with gratitude for providing us
with our life partners. May the heavens receive you gently as
you arrive, and do continue to smile down on us as we
endeavour to journey through life.

"And God shall wipe away all tears
from their eyes; and there shall be no
more death, neither sorrow, nor crying,
neither shall there be any more pain:
for the former things are passed away."
- Revelation 21:4 -
Chris and I belonged to a youth group ‘End
Time Ministry’ in our teenage years where
we actively served the Lord in Ghana.
Members were called end-timers for short.
Almost all the End Timers including myself
visited Chris’s home frequently, on some
occasions more than once a day. I got to
know Paapa then, although from a distance.
One could feel the warmth and love within
the family, Maame (RIP), Paapa, Sister
Charlotte, Kay, Vida, and Regina, they made
us feel very much at home. (e.g., they knew
all our names and would talk to us as though
they have always known us.) I did not need
much convincing from Chris when he
proposed to me; I had felt the love and
warmth in the family.
Although we got married away from our
families in Ghana, Paapa always encouraged
us when we spoke on the phone. Paapa
loved his grandchildren, always enquiring
about their welfare and achievements in
school.
The love and care Paapa and Maame (RIP)
showed when the children lived with them in
Ghana was simply incredible, I am eternally
grateful.
Whenever I visited Ghana, Paapa would
insist I stayed with them. He would say ‘this is
your home’, just loving and making me feel part
of the family.
It was a pleasure to have known Paapa a bit
more closely during his short stay with us in
2011, especially his passionate conversations
and his favourite dishes. Thank you Paapa for
all you did for us, for showing us the
importance of family unity and love.
You will forever be in our hearts.
Tribute from Mrs. Diana Dampare
With a heavy heart I write this tribute for not
only such a wonderful man but my father in-law.
Paapa as we affectionately call him was a very
kind Father in-law and was always delighted to
be around his family.
You could always hold a passionate
conversation with him, and despite the
distance between Paapa and a majority of his
grandchildren, he showed great interest in their
welfare and wellbeing. In 2011, I had the
pleasure of Paapa staying with my family and I,
although it was for a short period only, his visit
was so delightful.
With great thanks to Paapa, I was always made
to feel a part of the family and this was because
there was never a time where he did not treat
me as if I was one of his own.
Paapa thank you for everything you have done for
your family, till we meet again, rest in eternal peace.

GRANDCHILDREN Pt. 1
We have gained an ancestor. In the wee
hours of 2nd April 2021, we got a call about
his final flight from earth. We were filled
with many emotions, and remember sitting
in the confusion and grief, and then reality,
for a whole day. Having lost a grandparent
earlier in our infancy, honestly, we didn’t
know how we were going to take this at this
age, but we are equally grateful for the
experience of sending him off to a place of
peace.
We had the opportunity to see him in
person in January this year, before some of
us left Ghana. There was a strange peace
around him. We joked with him about his
white hair, and that ours was coming in
because of stress. He laughed and grinned
through pain. Having been blessed not to
have witnessed a lot of personal proximity
to death across life, this has been an
interesting and very trying time.
Rest In Peace Silver Fox
When we think of grandpa, we remember
how humorous, witty and clever he was.
Most of our childhood memories with him
are tinged with traces of humour and
laughter. Memories of how he used to tell
us funny stories about his own childhood
and school days still comes to mind. Paapa
as he is affectionately called, had a knack
for being disciplined with love. We loved
how we could move seamlessly from
talking about religion, death, beliefs, food
to making up ridiculous hymns and songs.
He knew people. He met with people. He
was curious yet allowed his soft heart to
explore.
He was so IMPERFECT but he was
committed to noticing his flaws and using
that as an example to set us straight. His
whole humanity is revered, even if he
struggled to accept different parts. He
LIVED. He LOVED. To us, that is divinity.
Grandpa, thank you for being strong. Thank you for
being who you were to us. Thank you for raising a
family of intelligent, witty and generous people.
Your lineage is one you are leaving in good stead,
and with connections that transcend time.
From the bottom of this well aching sorrow, we
would like to call this back up to the extended
family to stay in touch, cherish each other, forgive
each other and hold on to every human fibre that
clings you to family. Love one another.
We shall always cherish our time with you Paapa,
and happy to have served you too. Thank you for
all the encouragement, those timely pieces of
advice, for being the father some of us never had.
Perfection doesn’t exist. People do. We love you
fierce man. Until we meet again Silver Fox…

We called you Paapa because you were more like a father
than a grandfather to us. Even those of us who grew up
oceans away from you knew there would always be a place
for us in your home. Some of us had the privilege of living
with you in Ghana as children and, during those years, you
and Maame cared for us with such devotion we were never in
any doubt of your love for us.
Paapa, it is so hard to believe you are gone but we trust it was
time for God to call you home and this will be our comfort
whenever we find ourselves missing your warm smile or your
kind voice. You showed us through your actions what it
means to be dutiful, humble and compassionate. Your good
works and wise words are the precious legacy you leave
behind and wherever we may be in the world we will never
forget you, your blood runs through our veins and your
presence will remain with us always.
Rest in peace dear Paapa, we pray you will watch over us as
we do our best to make you proud.

NEPHEWS AND NIECES
Rest In Peace Uncle
Our Uncle, Samuel Sakyiamah Dampare (Uncle Joe) was especially blessed from heaven and
sent to us here on earth, but must now return. Uncle trained all of us as a family unit, with love
and discipline. He trained us in humility and obedience.
Our Uncle always told us not to be unruly in life. (M3ny3 rough wo abrabo mu). Uncle always
shared peaceful thoughts and ideas with us. One statement he always made each day was that
“hard work doesn’t kill but poverty kills” therefore we should always work hard if we want to
make it in life. With this he helped and offered us job opportunities in the Ministry of Agriculture.
He shared jokes with us too, and liked to share with us some good and sincere love. He was a
real definition of an Uncle.
Why did you leave us so soon, Uncle? How do you expect us to cope with all the hardship in this
world? He taught us to love, care, share, honesty, peace and above all self– respect. You are part
of our success and wellbeing today.
It is very difficult to accept that you are gone because whenever we wake up we feel your
presence. We are very much devastated because you left us suddenly. We will forever miss you
because you’ve left us with fond memories.
Uncle may the Almighty Lord keep you in his bosom.
Till we meet again, we say, Uncle nantew yiye!!

Rest In Peace Uncle Joe
He was very hard working, accommodating
and respectful, expressed gratitude freely
and a peace maker. If there is anything we
learnt from you, Uncle Joe, we learnt to love
and care, give and share, peace and
harmony. Hmmm, you were all any family
could ever have wanted.
We lived happily together until aging and
ailment challenged and brought you down till
you took your last breath. It was a painful
shock because we believed you were going
to make good progress towards recovery.
We prayed and did everything humanly
possible but the Lord called you to Glory.
Give thanks in all circumstances, for this
is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you
- 1 Thessalonians 5:18 -
A mighty tree has fallen, what can we say?
What have we got to say? And what have we
got to talk about? Our Father, brother, son,
uncle, grandfather, our all in all, Samuel
Sakyiamah Dampare (Uncle Joe) has passed,
indeed a mighty tree has fallen.
We can hardly find words appropriate to
express our emotions. Samuel Sakyiamah
Dampare, whose mortal remains lies before
us this day was our - everything, he loved
and cared for us.
He gave his family all he could, much above
our expectations. He offered job
opportunities to his nieces and nephews in
the Ministry of Agriculture.
You may not be with us now but you will
forever remain in our hearts till we meet
again.
Your beloved sister Mrs. Christiana Odamea
Shewan who is now alone as your sole
surviving sibling can’t hold the pain of your
loss, and bids you farewell saying may God
keep you safe in his bosom till we meet
again. We all say;
Uncle Joe, Damirifa Due, Due ne Amenehunu
He was all we had, he taught us to be God
fearing. He was our defacto Head of family.
His loving care and advice, with these he
established a happy home and lived faithfully
with mutual respect, love and understanding
for everyone.

We write this tribute with so much pain in our
hearts as the remains of our dear brother
Opanyin Samuel Sakyiamah Dampare lies in
state this morning. Available records show that
Opanyin Dampare who was born on 31st May,
1933 was baptized on 16th August, 1942 by Rev.
R. W. Owusu at Presbyterian Church of Ghana at
Nsawam.
He was confirmed at age seventeen, specifically
on 24th August, 1947 by Rev. Koramoah also at
Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Nsawam.
Mr. Dampare joined the then Tema North
Presbyterian Church of Ghana, now Trinity
Congregation on 13th August, 1974. Papa
Dampare belonged to the David group in the
Men’s Fellowship and as a Monday-born, did not
hesitate to donate generously to shore up the
taking of the group’s Mini-harvests. Such persons
who will go at every length to support the Church
are rare and we are lost for words for how
painfully we will miss him.
Papa Dampare all can testify, will normally come
to Church before the start of the First Service
even though he will attend the Second service.
He will sit quietly and wait even as First Service
worshippers file out, before he joins the Second
Service. We also know that he will normally pass
through the Accounts Office when he goes to
collect his pension, accompanied by his
grand-daughter- Nora Rogers and insist that he
pays his tithes before going home. He also made
time to attend funeral services of bereaved
members, even though far advanced in age.
Papa Dampare qualified for an award when the
Church celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2019, in
the category of the aged, who by their
unflinching support for the growth and personal
devotion to win souls to Christ. For the past few
years, Papa Dampare had become bed-ridden and
the Ministers used to go and administer Holy
Communion to him on regular basis.
In our moments of grief, we agree and share the
thoughts of the Prophet Isaiah 57: 2- which says –
“those who live good lives find peace and rest in
death.”
Papa, may the good Lord you faithfully served grant
you a blissful rest till the last Trumpet shall sound.
Amen

JESUS STILL LEAD ON
1.
Jesus still lead on,
Till our rest be won
And although the way be cheerless,
We will follow, calm and fearless;
Guide us by thy hand,
To our fatherland!
2.
If the way be drear,
If the foe be near. Let not
faithless fears o’ertake us
Let not faith and hope forsake us,
For through many a foe
To our Home we go.
3.
When we seek relief,
From a long-felt grief.
When oppressed by new temptations,
Lord increase and perfect
Patience, Show us that bright shore
Where we weep no more.
PRESBY HYMN 16
JEHOVAH FATHER, MIGHTY GOD
1.
Jehovah Father, Mighty God,
In you we have our lives,
With all our soul and flesh and mind,
Your gracious call we hear,
Our hearts rejoice in you.

A loving Father, is our God,
So heed His gracious call,
And let us praise His Holy Name,
Before His presence well,
Have everlasting peace.

THE LORD GOD IS MY SHEPHERD
1.
The Lord God is my Shepherd,
In Him I nothing lack.
He feeds me, and He helps me,
He guides me through this life.
My soul he saved, from sin and hell,
He leads me on the way to Heav’n.
2.
He sets His eyes upon me,
When in death’s vale I walk.
Then shall I fear no evil,
For God is with me still.
Your rod and staff they comfort me,
You’ll give your servant joy always.
3.
Jehovah spreads a banquet,
A table he has set.
Before my foes, He’ll bless me,
Great Honor he shall give.
Goodness and mercy shall be mine,
Eternal joy I’ll have in Him.
PRESBY HYMN 462
BLESSED, MERCIFUL JEHOVAH
1.
Blessed, merciful, Jehovah,
Lord, my sin, You have forgiv’n.
Now I’m filled with joy eternal,
Now I’m satisfied in faith.
O my soul, give thanks with praises,
Great is God’s blessings we have.
Merciful, He loved, redeemed me,
Evil dungeon saved me from.
2.
I no longer dread the judgement,
For the Lord suffered for me.
Precious Blood Christ Jesus has shed,
My sin He has washed away.
Debt I owe my Lord is heavy,
So much more I cannot bear.
But for Jesus Christ who saved me,
Hell shall be my home always.

PRESBY HYMN 263
THOU GRACIOUS HOLY SPIRIT
1.
Thou gracious Holy Spirit
Come Lord and dwell in me.
My first birth is flesh and blood,
Grant me new birth, I pray.
God Holy Spirit Lord,
From God the Father and Son,
The Holy Trinity share,
We praise Thy Holy Name.
2.
Come make Thy home in our hearts,
Unworthy though we are.
Help us to see our sinful lives,
And sanctify us Lord.
Come Lord and cleanse our hearts,
From lustful flesh and evil,
Come heal our souls and dwell us,
Make us Lord pure within.
PRESBY HYMN 518
HOLD THOU MY HANDS, DEAR JESUS
1.
Hold Thou my hands, dear Jesus,
Lead Thou me on.
Be with me always, throughout,
Depart not, Lord.
This life I cannot travel.
Fearful it is.
If You will not go with me,
I’ll neither go.
2.
My faint heart strengthen, Jesus,
In You abide.
In joy and in all sorrow,
This heart make still. Grant me abiding peace,
Peace from You Lord.
When raging storms are o’er me,
Be near me, Lord.
PRESBY HYMN 610
WAIT, MY SOUL, AND TARRY
1.
Wait, my soul, and tarry,
Tarry with God!
He will help you carry,
Carry every load.
Why fret and fear?
When the morn is near?
With the passing winter,
Spring shall soon appear.
When fierce storms distress,
In every ill,
God will surely bless you,
Be still my soul.
2.
Wait, my soul, and tarry,
Tarry with God!
He will help you carry,
Carry every load.
When all things fail,
God will still prevail.
He can safely lead you,
Through dark vale you trod.
Lord God eternal,
Leads to the goal.
Christ, forever Faithful,
Saves you, my soul.
3.
Wait, my soul, and tarry,
Tarry with God!
He will help you carry,
Carry every load.
When life shall cease,
God will grant release. Out of
sorrow, lead me,
Into blessed peace;
When through afflictions,
Thy way, I’ve trod.
Joy eternal follows,
Faithful is God.

PRESBY HYMN 494
WHERE IS JESUS, MY BELOVED?
1.
Where is Jesus, my beloved?
Where is my best friend who loves?
My beloved, I long for You,
I shall run and search for You.
2.
My heart loves and seeks for Jesus,
Come my Lord and cleanse my sin.
Where is Jesus, whom I love much?
Always I shall search for Him.
3.
Here I cry much in my struggles,
Where would I find Jesus Christ?
I shall seek Him, till I find Him,
I shall have joy in His sight.
PRESBY HYMN 805
FAREWELL, LOVED ONE
1.
Farewell, loved one,
You have been called by God.
He welcomes you back Home.
Here we do mourn,
Your death is hard to bear,
But we have hope in God.
We weep not like those who have no hope,
In patience and in hope we say now,
Farewell, loved one.
2.
Farewell, loved one,
The Lord our God Himself,
He calls you to return.
He sent you here,
His work in you is done,
The time has come to leave.
We bid you farewell on the journey,
None can restrain you, God has called you.

That though the radiance
which was once so bright
be now forever taken
from my sight. Though
nothing can bring back
the hour of splendour in
the grass, glory in the
flower. We will grieve not,
rather find strength in
what remains behind
