Baker’s Corner
Summer
Fruits Pie
Introduction
Make the most of summers berries with this
delectable pie… perfect with a dollop of fresh
cream!
Ingredients
(serves four)
For the pastry:
225g cold unsalted butter
chopped into small pieces
350g plain flour
50g icing sugar
Pinch of salt
1 large egg yolk
For the filling:
800g of berries such as
strawberries, raspberries,
blackberries, cherries or
blueberries
100g sugar
2tbsp of cornflour
½ tsp cinnamon
1 egg white (for glazing)
1tbsp sugar (for sprinkling)
Top Tips
• If you’re time-starved, feel
free to use pre-made shortcrust
pastry which is generally
as good as homemade, and
certainly easier!
• If you don’t have baking
beans use cooking weights,
dried lentils or rice.
• If you don’t have access to a
food processor simply rub the
butter and flour together until it
is the texture of breadcrumbs.
Method
1. Put the flour,
butter, icing sugar and
salt in a food processor
and blitz into crumbs. Combine
the yolk with 1tbsp cold water,
then add to the processor and
pulse until the dough comes
together. Divide the dough into
two, wrap in clingfilm and chill
in the fridge for at least one
hour or, better still, overnight.
2. Heat oven to 190C/170C
fan/gas mark 5. Roll out one
half of the pastry, then butter
an 8” pie dish and press in the
pastry topped with a sheet
of baking paper and baking
beans. Bake blind for 30 mins.
Remove the paper and beans.

base.
3. Roll out the second batch
of pastry and top the pie with
it, trimming to fit, and using
a fork to seal the edge. Use
a sharp knife to create a few
slits for steam to escape before
brushing with the whisked
egg white before topping with
sugar. Bake for 30-35 minutes
until crust is golden. Leave to
cool as filling will be extremely
hot!

Community News: Panteg Juniors AFC
Presentation
Evening 2021
The build up to the new season has continued for the juniors over the last few weeks.
Target were lucky enough to be able to attend the teams first presentation evening at
Panteg House recently.
The evening was a great success with the players picking up various awards on the
night and everybody having a great evening.
Target are delighted to be sponsoring the junior team again for another year and

How the entertaining, uplifting, genial tone
of Anthony Joshua disguises a darker force
which may yet lead him to even greater

Anthony Joshua, the person,
is charismatic, polite, funny

go around making a living by

“As a kid I grew up wanting to
be powerful and successful,”
begins the WBA, IBF, WBO
and IBO heavyweight boxing
champ, “but I guess that could
have played itself out in many
different ways.
“However this is where I am
and this is what I do, and I
wouldn’t change it for anything.
I’ve got a lot left in me and I’m
excited for the future - they say
when your time is up it’s not
necessarily the power and the
physical ability that goes first,
it’s your bottle.”
AJ’s bottle is well and truly still
intact, despite a challenging
couple of years
in the ring. First,
in June 2019,
there was his
shock defeat to
Andy Ruiz Jnr - the
champ’s first ever
professional defeat.
While the Brit exacted
revenge to win back his
belts in a rematch six months
later, events had shown up a
first chink in his armoury, and
one that a resurgent Tyson
Fury has been desperate to
capitalise on ever since.
“Boxers will go through
these episodes and it just so
happened it was my turn back
when I fought Andy Ruiz,”
says the 31-year-old. “At the
time it was the worst thing
that had ever happened to
me in the ring, but now I look
back on it as a blessing. I have
proved to myself that I have the
mental and physical resilience
to power back from adversity
when people all around you
are questioning if you’ve still
got it. You never know in the
late rounds of a fight when that
learned lesson could help me
through to victory.”
There’s a fair chance those
echoes may come about when
AJ gets his long-awaited
shot at Tyson Fury. It’s the
heavyweight boxing bout the
world has been desperate to
see, although it now seems
that Fury will first have to again
fight mandatory challenger
Deontay Wilder, with Joshua
taking on Ukrainian Alexander
Usyk. Only when those two old
foes are overcome will the fight
everyone has been waiting for

The complete guide to Higher Education student loans.
Tuition Fee Loan - Quite
simply, a loan that covers
tuition fees, so that a student
can move on with the
reassurance that they have
paid for their studies for the
duration of the course.
It is possible to extend this for
an additional year (as many
students may
entertain the idea
of a gap year),
though while
courses, seminars
and trips are
covered, things
like books aren’t.
The loan is paid
directly to the
Higher Education
institution.
Maintenance
Loan - This loan is
designed to cover
living costs and, in
a basic sense, the
expenses related in surviving
day to day. Obviously those
expenses will include private
rent, food, utilities, travel,
clothes, entertainment and
socialising.
It may be possible to apply
for bursaries or grants which
would provide a student
with a financial ‘top-up’. The
approving of these depends on
your financial status and family
household income, as well as
if other siblings have gone into
Higher Education.
Conditions - To apply for
finance the student will need
to be studying at a recognised
publicly-funded university,
college or private institution, on
an approved full-time course.
Funding for a second Higher
Education course is possible,
though is much harder to
come by.
The student will need to be a
UK resident or national, with
settled status and having lived
here for three years previously.
Interest - The extremely low
interest rates on student loans
mean most students choose to
take out both Tuition Fee and
Maintenance loans. They will
not affect your credit rating, nor
adversely impact the chances
of getting a mortgage.
Applying - Loans can be
applied for via the relevant
student body (depending on
where the student resides in
the UK), and those seeking
means-tested support will need
to supply evidence to back up
any figures.
Other funding - It’s
always worth checking
with the university or
college to see if they
provide additional
financial initiatives that
can boost money reserves.
In addition, some charities
occasionally have plans
which can boost financial
buoyancy, while possible
future employers offer
sponsorship schemes.
In summing up, it’s worth
suggesting that the ‘live for
the moment’ nature of student
life decrees that student loans
– and, specifically, the repaying
of them – can be left for further
down the line, but harnessing
financial responsibility
is always important and
managing a student loans is
ultimately a great place to start.

Dog Days
Essential preparation for ensuring that both you and your dog have the happiest start to your

Make-up Hacks
Make the most of your make-up accessories with these ingenious hacks.
• Get natural contouring the easy way -
Find the perfect spot every time for your
blush or bronzer by placing an eyeliner
pencil just below your cheekbone to get
the right angle, and brush above that line.
• Make your own lip gloss - Never throw
away a broken eyeshadow powder again.
Simply mix it with Vaseline for an ‘on the
spot’ lip shine.
• Turn a pencil eyeliner into gel - This may
sound crazy, but if you hold an ordinary
eye pencil in a lighter or candle flame for
one second, let it cool for 15, and you will
end up with a deep, smudgy gel effect.
• Revive dried-up mascara - Don’t bin that
dried-out tube just yet - simply add a few drops of
saline solution for instant va-va-voom.
• Make lipstick last longer - Tired of your lipstick
letting you down? Simply cover your finished lips
with a tissue which you then dust with translucent
powder to set the colour.
• Wing it - If you struggle with steady hands when
applying eye liner,
simply employ the help
of a teaspoon to create
a wonderful wing effect.
Start your eyeliner as
you would for a cat
eye look, pressing the
rounded side of the
spoon against your
eyelid, and move the
spoon outwards to
create your fab flick.
• Cover up dark circles
like a pro - Rather than
follow the crescent line
of your eye bags, draw
a triangle shape with concealer from the edges of
your lashes down to your cheekbone and blend.
• Never have lipstick on your teeth again - Have
gorgeous dark lips and an equally lovely smile by
popping your finger in your mouth after applying
lipstick, close your lips around your finger and pull
it out.
• Curl your lashes in no time at all - Make lash
curling a doddle by heating your curler up with a
gentle blast from your hairdryer.
• Smell like an angel all day long - Quit dousing
yourself in scent, and instead apply to your pulse
points for all-day aroma. These include: behind
your ear, your wrist, base
of throat, inside elbow and
behind your knees.
• Create contours with just
blush - If you’re not ready
for full-on contouring, you
can still enhance your face’s
natural shape by applying
pink blush on cheekbones,
temples and brow bones.
• Conceal those pimples
- Make spots disappear by
applying concealer, topped
by foundation and finished
with a touch of powder.
• Boost your manicure - Forgo the layer of clear
base and instead apply white nail varnish followed
by your colour of choice. You’ll be amazed at how
the colour pops with this simple trick.

Book review by

Hungry by Grace Dent
Hungry is a memoir about food, class and
families and follows the journey of well-known
restaurant critic Grace Dent from her working-class
childhood home in Carlisle to the
multimillion-pound London restaurants that
she reviewed.
Above all, it is an unsentimental but
heart-breaking tribute to the relationship between
Grace Dent and her father, George, as he
slowly slips out of reach into dementia.
In a media career spanning more than two
decades, Dent is best known as a restaurant
critic and the early part of Hungry revisits the
ways in which family life shaped her relationship
with food.
Ex-soldier George teaches her to cook with
Campbell’s tinned soup. If you remember the
eighties then this is a loving tribute to the convenience
food of that era: families having their
tea on their laps watching the television…
which only had a few channels to choose from.
Hungry is, as you’d expect, very, very funny
(“Sadly, Mother’s aim to be posh was thwarted
at every turn by our next-door neighbours,
who were resolutely common”).
There are echoes of Caitlin Moran in
her tales of arriving in the world of
London glossy magazines, where she is
intimidated by sleek girls called Taffeta
Flinty-Wimslow who only eat salad.
It is, however, in the description of
George’s dementia where Dent’s writing
really shines and she describes her
gnawing grief as the disease strips her
father of his memories and personality
as well as the small moments of connection
that offer a way through.
By turns comic, nostalgic and also
incredibly sad, Hungry is an exploration
of how food binds us together:
the meals we take as families, the food
shared with friends, the sneaky chocolate
bars sneaked into school bags. A
book to be devoured.
